PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID NASHVILLE TN PERMIT NO. 642 Do You Know the State of Your Home’s Electrical Health? While enjoying electric TVs, radios and other appliances, homeowners may forget they can cause shocks and fires. Things wear out, including electrical wiring, and codes continually change as improved materials and safety features become available. In 1990, bad plugs, cords, switches, and outlets caused about 13,000 home fires and nearly 200 deaths. Most electrical fires and injuries can be prevented. Homeowners should take the time to have their electrical systems inspected and learn about electrical safety. Your home is not only one of your largest financial investments, but it’s the place of safety you provide your family. Take a little time to give your home a checkup! The holidays likely bring additional computers, televisions and sound systems into your home. Be sure to follow electrical safety tips to keep you and your home safe from electrical hazards this fall and winter. Hiller wants all of its customers to have a HAPPY and safe holiday season in their homes. • Check electric cords often for damage. Have damaged cords repaired right away. Worn cords can cause shock, short circuit or fire. • Do not overload electric outlets with too many items plugged in at once. • Water and electricity do not mix. Do not operate electric appliances such as radios or hair dryers near a bathtub or sink full of water. • Unplug any appliance that emits sparks or that does not work properly. • Always unplug an appliance before cleaning or repairing it. • Remember that a turned-off appliance is still connected to electricity until it is unplugged. 615.292.6110 | 931.648.4222 | 270.843.6606 | 865.602.7707 | 931.372.2833 | www.happyhiller.com Inside This Issue Boost Your Immunity | Stay Healthy This Fall and Winter Don’t Leave the Leaves | Don’t Ignore Fallen Leaves Check Chimneys | Blocked Chimneys Can Cause Trapped Fumes Regulate The Humidity | Improving Your Home’s Air Quality Prepare Your Pipes | Get Your Plumbing Ready for Winter Happy Hiller Club | Save with Yearly Tune Ups from Hiller As Good as My Word By Jimmy Hiller Another fall has come around! Falling leaves may look pretty and be fun to play in, but they can cause damage to your house. Clean out your gutters once the leaves have all fallen to remove all of the debris. This isn’t really a plumbing problem, but frozen or clogged gutters can cause a myriad of problems. If water doesn’t flow properly through the drain spout, eventually, gutters will need replacing. In addition, the trim around the gutters can rot, causing gutters to fall or be unstable. Homeowners should also be diligent about raking leaves on the grass areas; while they are good mulch in the garden, leaves left over the winter will damage the lawn. They can also get into the streets and into sewers. When it snows, melting snow has nowhere to go and ends up flooding streets or backing into houses. Boost Your Immunity Stay Healthy This Fall and Winter Get Out More Don’t Starve a Cold ■ One theory is that social people take better care of themselves— getting enough sleep and eating well. ■ Your body needs energy to fight infection. If you cut back on calories, your body may not be able to mount an immune response. Flu viruses can live 8 to 12 hours on paper or cloth, 24 to 48 on nonporous places like doorknobs and knobs, and up to 72 hours on wet surfaces, like towels and faucets. Your best defense? Wash your hands, especially after touching these cold- and flu-friendly surfaces: Get Some Shut Eye ■ People who log less than seven hours of sleep per night are about three times more likely to catch a cold after being exposed to the rhinovirus than those who snooze eight hours or more. Get Moving ■ In one study, only 30% of women age 55-plus who walked or cycled moderately for 45 minutes, five days per week, came down with a cold, compared to nearly half of the women who only attended stretching sessions once a week. • ATM, elevator and photocopier buttons • Doorknobs • Faucets • Gym equipment • Shopping cart handles • Kids’ toys • Money • Computer keyboards • Remote controls Regulating the Humidity Improves the Air Quality Having the humidity level in your house adjusted just right is a great way to improve the overall indoor air quality. Air that is too dry can cause your skin to crack and itch and can even intensify allergy and cold symptoms. Also, properly humidified air allows air purification systems to work more effectively, helping them to do their job and improve the overall quality of the air circulating throughout your home. You’ll also benefit because air without excess humidity will inhibit the spread of certain allergens. Mold won’t be able to grow and spread without high levels of humidity, and dust mites also can’t survive when humidity levels in your home are below 50%. Safety Detectors Use the change of seasons as a reminder to test your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check Chimneys Before Enjoying a Roaring Fire Chimneys can become blocked when debris and large objects fall inside from overhanging trees and fallen leaves. Unless you inspect your chimney regularly, you may not be aware that you have a blockage issue. The blockage prevents gases and fumes produced by the chimney from escaping through the top and instead releasing those fumes into your house. It is possible for carbon monoxide fumes to cause sickness or even death. As Good As My Word | Prepare Your Pipes continued from front page "Service tech was very helpful and took the time to educate me about the problem and repair solutions" -- C.S., Spring Hill Following these tips will get your home’s plumbing system ready for the cold winter ahead. And, as long as you’re in the mood for a plumbing check, go around your home and check everything else: ■ Look under all of the sinks and check for leaks and drips. Check to see if sinks are draining at a proper speed. ■ Make sure the toilets are operating properly; a slowly running toilet can waste an enormous amount of water and can usually be fixed for the cost of a new gasket. ■ Make sure all of the faucets in the kitchen, bathrooms and basement are not leaking or dripping – this includes the water spout and the hot/cold handles. ■ Check the connectors to the washing machine in the laundry – these are typically rubber hoses and they wear out from time to time. ■ Check under the kitchen sink to make sure there is no leakage of the disposer and its connection to the dishwasher. ■ Find your water main – just in case there is a major leak or a burst pipe, knowing how to shut the water off quickly will minimize any damage.
