Marcy was super excited because the first day of school was in just three weeks. “I can’t wait to see my friends again,” she told her mom. “It will be here sooner than you think,” laughed her mom, “but we have lots to do before school starts.” Marcy’s mom made a long list of things they needed to do before school started. On the list was an appointment for Marcy to see the eye doctor. “Most of what you learn is through your eyes, Marcy, so you need an eye exam,” she said. “I’m a little bit scared,” said Marcy “What does an eye doctor do?” “Don’t worry, Sweetie,” her mom reassured her. “The eye doctor will just check your eyes to make sure you can see your best. Good eyesight will help you learn and have fun in school.” When they arrived at the doctor’s office, Marcy and her mom took a seat in the waiting room. “Look at all those glasses in the case, Mom! Do you think I’ll get to choose a pair?” exclaimed Marcy. Her mom said she might if the doctor said she needed glasses to see well. Marcy’s name was called, and she and her mother went to meet the doctor. “Hi Marcy. I’m Dr. Thomas. I’m so happy you came to your appointment today. I’m going to do a few tests and I’ll check your eyes to make sure they’re healthy and ready for you to do your best in school.” “This is a Snellen chart,” explained Dr. Thomas. “It helps me figure out how well you can see things from far away. Can you read that last line?” “I think so, Dr. Thomas,” said Marcy. Then she read the last line perfectly! Then the doctor shined a light into Marcy’s eyes so he could see how they looked on the inside. “For you to see your best, your eyes need to work together. Now I’m going to cover each eye with this paddle to find out how well your eyes work together,” said Dr. Thomas. Next, Dr. Thomas did a test to make sure Marcy could see colors clearly. Then, he put drops into Marcy’s eyes to make them dilate, so he could get an even better look inside them. Finally, Dr. Thomas put Marcy in front of a machine that puffed a little bit of air into her eye. “This kind of tickles,” she giggled. Marcy decided the puff test was her favorite! When he finished his exam, Dr. Thomas said, “The eye exam shows that you’re just a bit farsighted. That means you have some trouble seeing things close up.” “I’m going to write you a prescription for glasses. Then, you can pick out a pair to help you see better when you’re in the classroom.” Marcy and her mom thanked Dr. Thomas and headed to the eye glass case. Marcy was so excited when she finally chose a pair of pink frames. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled. “Mom!” she exclaimed. “These are so cool. I can’t wait to wear them to school!” On Marcy’s first day of school, she looked forward to showing off her new glasses. She knew they looked great, and she was especially happy that they would help her to learn and to have fun in school. The End To learn more about your eyes, visit SeeMuchMore.com.
