The programming promise remains focused on the
music, with presenters who also guarantee the music
programming, such as Francis Zégut who has been
presenting Pop-Rock Station by Zégut every evening
for more than 10 years. Lastly, all of the events
organised or sponsored by the station are currently
musically oriented: showcases, concerts and

On 26 and 27 March 2015, RTL 2 celebrated its
20th birthday with two days of special programming
(Backstage reported) – a nod to the 2.8 million
daily listeners, an all-time record in the station’s
history. Determined to organise a birthday party
for its listeners that is worthy of its ambitions, the
radio station did not stop there. “In 2000, when
RTL 2 celebrated its 5th birthday, it organised five
private concerts,” explains Tristan Jurgensen,
General Manager of RTL Group’s French music
radio stations, Fun Radio and RTL 2. “Fifteen years
later, the latest addition to RTL Group’s French radio
stations is all grown up. Now, at the age of 20, we
can aim much higher.”

Best ratings in 20 years
Today, RTL 2 is making the most of its musical
positioning and the authentic and high-quality image
it has earned from the public. As can be seen in the
latest ratings – with 2,830,000 daily listeners and
a 3.2 per cent audience share – RTL 2 beat all of
its ratings records in January. “Thanks to the great
events we organised, the musical partnerships
we’ve forged, the communication channels we’ve
developed and the quality of the programmes we’ve
aired, RTL 2 now reaches more listeners every
second of every day than it has over the last 20 years
of radio polling,” Tristan Jurgensen explains. “What
a great gift the listeners have given us in helping us
kick off the year of our 20th birthday. Now it’s up to us
to give something back to them... times 20.”

developed a unique and exclusive approach to
musical events by focusing on intimate and rare
moments between artists and listeners,” Tristan
Jurgensen says. “Private concerts, interviews, and
offering every month the opportunity to a different
Pop-Rock artist to take over the editing of
our Website as an ‘editor-in-chief’ are all unique
opportunities to bolster links between listeners,
artists and the station.”
On 26 March 2015, RTL 2 celebrated its birthday at a party
broadcast live in the presence of artists representative of the
station, including Raphael (left) and Jean-Louis Aubert

When asked about the station’s future prospects,
the former general manager of digital subsidiary
RTL Net naturally mentioned digital and the
recent overhaul of the RTL2.fr site as part of the
‘Renaissance’ project. Big sister RTL Radio went
through the same process last year. “As a medium,
radio has always managed to adapt to every era and
to the public’s new habits. This is still the case today
since the station is particularly well suited to mobile
consumption – car radios, smartphones, music
players – and associated habits: listening to the
radio while using a computer or tablet, consumption
via car radio and screens or televisions. The future
of RTL 2 is taking this approach: our entire digital
offering is being revamped.”

Generally speaking, RTL 2 is a station in good health
and, at the ripe old age of 20, is more solid than
its direct rivals. It is the leader among music radio
stations for young adults, outpacing the three other
French networks in this group (RFM, Chérie FM
and Virgin Radio – editor’s note). “The French love
RTL 2 and they demand it. This is a major asset that
will drive the station forward for the next 20 years,”
Tristan Jurgensen concludes.

In March 2015, the station’s website has been
revamped with a highly visual Pop-Rock music
culture approach, such as a magazine and
facilitated mobile consumption. The site features
‘responsive design’ that adapts automatically to all
screens. The RTL 2 apps will also be revamped
shortly. Like the new RTL.fr site, the ‘enhanced
live’ approach, with real-time feeds from social
networks, has been retained and the content of
radio programmes has been enhanced with custom
content about pop-rock artists and events. “The key
challenge in this repositioning is the consumption
of RTL 2 in digital format, which currently accounts
for nearly 10 per cent of its daily audience. This
proportion should double over the next 12 months
and will definitely reach 35 per cent within three
or four years,” Tristan Jurgensen says. “Proof that
these developments are highly strategic for the
brand.”
In February 2015, to celebrate the 20th birthday of RTL 2, Charlie Winston gave a Concert Très Très Privé live on air
and in public at the Grand Studio in RTL headquarters in Rue Bayard in Paris

BACKGROUND
In March 1994, Compagnie Luxembourgeoise de Télédiffusion (CLT) informed the CSA (French Media
Authority) that it would like to fully take over M 40 – a network of music radio stations in which it already
held a 30 per cent stake. In January 1995, despite CSA’s refusal on the grounds of radio pluralism
(the company already owned RTL Radio and Fun Radio), CLT renamed M 40 after its big sister: RTL 1.
After a complaint of competitor Europe 1 which found the name “RTL 1” too close to their own, the new
name, RTL 2, was authorised by the CSA on 6 March 1995.
Originally, RTL 2’s programming was music targeting 25-34-year-olds (‘young adults’).
The audience share in this target in 1995 was 2.6 per cent. At that time, RTL 2 was the most musical station
in France in terms of the number of music titles aired and helped young talent by allocating 20 per cent of
its broadcasting to new songs.

TÉLÉVIE CHALLENGE 2015:
€60,000 FOR CANCER AND LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH
RTL Group
On 27 March 2015, employees at RTL Group’s
Corporate Centre in Luxembourg got on their
bikes to take up the traditional Télévie Challenge
– a collaborative ‘spinning’ marathon organised
by the company to raise donations towards
cancer and leukaemia research. After eight
hours of non-stop pedalling on their bikes, the
athletic charity fundraisers had notched up the
impressive total of €60,000.
Luxembourg – 30 March 2015
RTL Group employees all together for the 11th Télévie Challenge
The eleventh edition of this great non-stop sporting event lasted
from 12:00 to 20:00. The first eager participant was Elmar Heggen,
Chief Financial Officer and Head of the RTL Group Corporate
Centre, who encouraged the cyclists to keep those wheels of charity
turning. All afternoon and into the evening, participants took turns to
work up a sweat for this worthy cause. RTL Group’s 34 teams and
230 participating employees also received welcome help from 150
external participants, including Luxembourg Minister for Sustainable
Development and Infrastructure François Bausch and cross-country
champion Pol Mellina.

The suspense reached its climax
when Elmar Heggen stepped up
to announce the result of the fundraising initiative, in the presence of
Carol Bragança-Kayser, the outgoing
Télévie Coordinator in Luxembourg,
and Dr Marc Diederich from the Cancer
Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular
Biology (LBMCC) at LuxembourgKirchberg Hospital. Through their
efforts, the cyclists clocked up 8,929
kilometres (308 km more than in
2014), a distance which the company
converted into a total of €44,645
(€5 per km) and generously rounded up
The Fitness Centre in Luxembourg during the Télévie Challenge 2015
to €60,000. Presiding over the exciting
finale to this year’s Télévie Challenge
was the journalist and RTL Télé & Radio Lëtzebuerg Presenter
Philippe Dondelinger. A cheque for the final amount was then
presented in front of the counter displaying the grand total. In actual
fact, the sum raised by the cyclists was increased by contributions
made by the sponsoring teams Elco, Travel Pro/Sales-Lentz and
Pâtisserie Schumacher, totalling €1,405, €1,280 and €1,395
(€5 per km) respectively. The full amount raised will be transferred, in
the name of Télévie, to the National Scientific Research Fund (FNRS)
to support medical research into cancer, with the main focus on battling
leukaemia.

TÉLÉVIE IN A NUTSHELL
Télévie is a large-scale fund-raising
initiative launched in 1989 by
RTL Belgium to benefit the F.R.S.–
FNRS by supporting research into
cancer, and leukaemia in particular.
RTL Lëtzebuerg first joined in back
in 2002.
For years now, tens of thousands
of people have become involved
by raising money for cancer and
leukaemia research. In 2014, the
whole Télévie operation netted
a record amount of €9,027,731
in Belgium and Luxembourg.
The combined grand total raised
over the past 26 years exceeds
€140,000,000, enabling numerous
research grants to be awarded.
Since 2005, RTL Group has
organised its own sporting event
to raise funds for a worthy cause,
the Télévie Challenge. Since the
launch of this charity cycling event,
more than 95,000 kilometres have
been completed. The total distance
covered converted into a total of
540,000, with all the proceeds going
to the National Scientific Research
Fund (FNRS).
The next leg of the adventure will take place on 25 April 2015, in the
form of the second Télévie Challenge on Tour, which will see cyclists
riding a 180-km course through Luxembourg. Last year’s edition of
this event raised an impressive additional €13,000. The sum raised
this year will be added to donations collected by other initiatives held
around the country to benefit Télévie. Cheques for the amounts raised
will be presented the same day on the gala evening show closing
this year’s Télévie. The show will be broadcast live on RTL Télé
Lëtzebuerg.

The National Scientific Research Fund (FNRS) and RTL Lëtzebuerg have

assignment on 1 April 2015.

Everyone – without exception – is looking for love. And yet, it is never
easy to find and for some people it is more complicated than for others.
Narrated by actress Michèle Laroque, Mon Partenaire particulier
follows men and women who are claiming their right to love. These
particular singles, each of whom has a physical or mental handicap,
have decided to go in search of their soulmates.
Julie, an amazing thirty-something, has been playing
the harp since she was a child. She was diagnosed
with Williams syndrome, a rare genetic disorder,
when she was 12 years old
Mon Partenaire particulier is an adaptation of the UK format
The Undateables. Nominated for the BAFTA Television Award in 2014,
The Undateables was the subject of a case study at the Edinburgh
Festival, where it won the most innovative TV programme award. The
first episode attracted three million viewers. The Undateables remains
one of the most watched shows on Channel 4, with an audience share
of 11.1 per cent between 19:00 and 22:00 on Tuesdays. The channel
decided to immediately order season five and season six based on the
success of the recently completed season four. The programme led
to a constructive debate on the perception of disabilities in the United
Kingdom. During its run it has so far managed not only to win over the
public, but also its initial detractors.

NEW HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE
UFA Fiction
On 1 April 2015, the UFA Fiction production
of Nackt unter Wölfen premiered in Germany
on Das Erste. M6 will be showing the film
(L’enfant de Buchenwald) on 8 April in prime
time. This interpretation of the novel has
also been sold to Belgium, the Netherlands,
Luxembourg, Poland, Lithuania and Austria.
Germany – 1 April 2015
Nackt unter Wölfen
Nackt unter Wölfen is the remake of
the well-known German Democratic
Republic novel of the same name
written by Bruno Apitz, published
in 1958. Its focus is on the last
days of the Second World War and
the liberation of the Buchenwald
concentration camp. The novel
was reissued in 2012; the reissue
included an extensive epilogue and
additional documents that take a
critical look at the story of the novel’s
creation and effects. The premiere in
Germany was watched by 5.45 million
viewers of the total audience share
(17.3 per cent).
Nico Hofmann, Managing Director of UFA Fiction: “I am extremely
proud of the fact that there has been so much interest from abroad in
this unusual and outstanding made-for-TV movie, especially in view of
the fact that we are telling the story as historically accurate as possible,
and have attempted to address the issue in a responsible way – we
view this as another step towards emotionally approaching the question
of German guilt in a manner that makes it possible to grieve honestly.
We owe this to the victims.”

Bernard Majani, Head of Acquisitions, Groupe M6: “We intend
to broadcast the film within the scope of the 70th anniversary of the
liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp. We were struck by
the actors’ outstanding performances and the production quality and
impressed by the moving story. We therefore decided to make an
exception and to show a German-language TV film in prime time.”
