Urban Skillz Urban Skillz programmes are arts-based workshop-oriented courses that enable young adults to achieve an accredited award, perhaps for the first time, and to achieve a final outcome they can feel proud of, whether that be a live performance, recorded track or music video. The ability to learn and be creative is naturally present within young adults, however, due to a number of factors many become disengaged from education and feel they are unable to achieve. Urban Skillz focuses on the needs and interests of the learner, beginning wherever they feel most comfortable, at their depth, and gradually building from there. Rather than sitting passively in a classroom or exam hall, young adults undertake highly practical activities, interspersed with games and discussions, helping them reflect creatively on their own skills, strengths, weaknesses and preconceptions. Having gained new insight about themselves and others, the young adults keep a record of their learning in an individual portfolio, using creative mediums, such as: photos, multimedia recordings, and ratings on pictorial scales. Embedded into Urban Skillz is the ASDAN Expressive Arts Award for which participants can earn up to 6 credits, 1 every 10 hours. Urban Skillz tutors build courses of up to 60 hours, delivering these programmes and ensuring each participant achieves the highest award they are capable of achieving. Urban Skillz: Theatre Urban Skillz: Theatre is a dynamic programme that introduces young people to acting as a form of self-expression. This drama programme challenges young people’s perceptions about life, enables them to understand their own emotions better, and helps them grow in confidence. Through a series of engaging workshops, young people work towards a variety of creative outcomes, culminating in the creation of a short film, music video (drama sequence) or live performance. Key skills developed through Urban Skillz Theatre: • Imagery and Character Development – Participants will be introduced to the medium of theatre using live performance, contemporary television shows and music videos to stimulate ideas and generate discussion. Through numerous games, role plays and improvisations characters are created and developed encouraging participants to push themselves beyond their comfort zones increasing their confidence and self esteem. • Writing and Interaction with other Actors – Places and faces from our past provide interesting stimulus to look at ways of telling stories. The group will learn how people interact with each other, and how Status, Emotions and Moods can be explored through theatre. They will generate plots and scripts that build naturally into a final performance piece. • Final Performance – Drama can be thought provoking and challenge people to consider a different perspective.
