0 Student Success Startup Weekend at LCC West The Small Business Development Center at LCC, in collaboration with the Technical Careers Division, the LCC Foundation and LEAP hosted a second annual Startup Weekend: Maker Edition event at West Campus. This event brought together a diverse mix of people and skills to work on creative problem solving while developing an entrepreneurial culture at the college and in the community. Approximately 70% of participants were LCC students, other participants included MSU students and community members. Participants worked through the weekend using West Campus’s electronics labs, CAD systems, 3D printers, metal working areas, woodworking tools and technical assistance. They shared ideas, formed teams, designed products, built prototypes and launched businesses—all in 48 hours. On Sunday afternoon, Dr. Knight welcomed Mayor Bernero who toured the building and spoke briefly to the entire group. The five teams presented their product prototypes. Many students expressed that this was a great experience. It was an exciting and productive event with a track record of fostering successful, job-creating startup companies. Performing Arts starts the fall with a Sold-Out Opening Night Performing Arts, opened the Fall season with a Dart Auditorium performance by our own Faculty Jazz Quartet (Dennis Therrian, Jon Gewirtz, Ed Fedewa, Mike Daniels). The same weekend in the Black Box, Never Swim Alone began a four-performance run. Deb Keller directed a three-person student cast in this intense, modern satire. Reviewer Tom Helma wrote in the City Pulse: “….the equivalent of what one might see in professional theater” and the sold-out opening night audience agreed with a standing ovation. 1 College Night at CCRESA College Night at CCRESA participants included 188 students and 145 parents from the six high schools in Clinton County, Laingsburg, and homeschooling. Two LCC Financial Aid workshops were taught by LCC’s Jim Owens that attracted high numbers and positive feedback. Michigan Peer Support Specialist Graduation LCC hosted the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Certification Ceremony at West Campus. Janet Marion, Director of Human Services in Health and Human Services Division, spoke to the students and their families about their accomplishment and future academic goals. The 81 graduates who have taken the course through the State of Michigan were awarded college credit for Human Services course HUSE 295. These graduates are now eligible to go into the workforce as a trained peer specialist. Since the program’s inception in 2006 the program has awarded 1,463 certificates. The program has broadened to include veterans with 171 graduates thus far. This educational opportunity has also expanded to prisons and Washtenaw County’s Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility which had the first group of graduates. The second group is being trained in a facility in northern Michigan. Students Win Scholarships for Scholarly Work At the annual state Radiologic Technology meeting in September, LCC radiography student Morgan Lange was awarded a Michigan Society of Radiologic Technologists (MSRT) scholarship of $500. Morgan is a second year student who will graduate next spring. The Phi Theta Kappa organization has awarded nursing student Michael Klein the 2015 Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship for $2,500 is awarded to twenty students each year. The scholarship recognizes the outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments of students enrolled in registered nursing, respiratory care or emergency medical services associate degree programs. LCC’s Veterans Resource Center-A Path for Students for Success A donation of $3,000 was given to the Veterans Resource Center to provide loans to veteran students to help cover some of their bills until their VA GI Bill money was dispersed. They returned the loan to LCC once they had received funding. This circle of giving will continue to allow veterans to attend LCC with less financial burden at the start of the semester. 2 Mr. Phil Kline, a Korean War Veteran and longtime LCC Student Veteran Association supporter, has generously donated a pool table and accessories to the Veteran Resource Center. 10 LCC student veterans along with 10 MSU veterans were invited by the Safari Club International and Dunn Creek Outfitters to participate in Skeet Shoot and Pheasant Hunt in Laingsburg. This event gave veterans a chance to interact, bond, and take home some pheasants for dinner! Imbed Principles and Practices of Inclusivity and Diversity LUCERO Program recognized as Example of Excelencia Excelencia in Education recognized LCC’s LUCERO Program for being at the forefront in improving higher educational achievement for Latino/a students. For 10 years Excelencia in Education has offered Examples of Excelencia, the only evidence based national initiative to identify and publicize programs that improve Latino Student Success. LCC’s Program profile was shared with post-secondary institutions from across the county. LCC has already received several calls on how they can replicate LUCERO. International Author, Speaker, & Career Educator Ruby Payne Visits LCC In October, internationally renowned author Ruby Payne was the featured speaker for the college’s Experience #starpower Speakers’ Series. Payne’s novel A Framework for Understanding Poverty provided the background for her presentation in which she spoke on the importance of communicating, educating and working with people of different mental models. Payne was entertaining, interesting and captivating with stories of how she conducted her research, the task of fitting in with different socio-economic classes, and how leaders in higher education play an integral role in a student’s development and success. Her visit reminded faculty and staff to be mindful when passing judgements on students and to be thoughtful and innovative in our approaches to what and how we teach them.
