The current SMART website will remain active until 1 Apr then it will be retired. However, it is important to know the new website will continue to use www.smartrving.org rather than the temporary one www.smartrving2.org. The new website is fully operational and we hope you have had the opportunity to access it. We are glad to report all Regional websites are active and 75% of the chapters now have the new website. You are able to enter your SMART member number and a password to enter the “Member” area. From there, you can access your profile and review your member info and update it, if necessary. Much time and effort have been expended by Webmaster Jack Fritz and his team Jeff Stephens, Paul Rider, and Donald Hollis along with the Hq staff Phyllis and Melissa and they all deserve our thanks. The new website has resulted in a state of the art website with many dynamic features which continue to evolve. If you have any questions or recommendations, please contact your chapter website delegate or the SMART webmaster Jack Fritz at jack.fritz99@gmail.com Welcome and Congratulations to the following New Members and Their Sponsors (For Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb)) SMART # 14172 14173 14177 14178 14179 14180 14181 14182 14183 14184 14185 14187 14190 14191 14194 14195 14196 14197 14198 14199 14200 14201 (NEW MEMBER NAME) Billy Mitchell (Rosita) Lavern Blount (Gale) Charles Larsen (Lynn) Lynn Larsen (Charles) Stephen Quesnel (Ann) Robert Zeller Michael Howell (Jo Ann) Roy Melton Robert John McKean (Sandra) Jeannette Thompson (Timothy) Tom Lonze (Marilee) Marille Lonze (Tom) Herbert Morgan (Jennifer) Jennifer Morgan (Herbert) Louis Boros (Holly) Holly Boros (Louis) Rick Letterman (Judy) Judy Letterman (Rick) Dean Proctor Laura Copsey (Paul) Gary Wilde (Randa) Randa Wilde (Gary) (CITY, STATE) Abbeville, SC Crestview, FL Rapid River, MI Rapid River, MI Evans, GA Pensacola, FL South Portland, ME Jacksonville, NC Port Charlotte, FL Green Cove Springs, FL Prescott Valley, AZ Prescott Valley, AZ Panama City, FL Panama City, FL Brevard, NC Brevard, NC Salinas, CA Salinas, CA San Antonio, TX Elk Grove, CA Mukwonago, WI Mukwonago, WI (RECRUITER) K Johnston G Blount J Horton B Roberge J Rixmann J Stephens T Thompson K Roberge K Roberge J Collier P Copsey J Katin J Katin 3 SMART # 14202 14203 14204 14207 14208 14209 14210 14211 14213 14214 14215 14224 14227 14228 14229 14230 14231 14233 14235 14236 14238 14239 14240 14241 14242 14243 14244 14245 14246 14247 14248 14249 14250 14251 14252 14253 14254 14255 14256 14257 14258 14259 14260 14261 14262 (NEW MEMBER NAME) Frank Valenza (Peggy) Carol Deisering (Leon) Connie Hunter Dennis Groebe (Carol) Walter Padgett (Kathy) Kathy Padgett (Walter) Nancy Hudak (Stephen) Lee Naugle (Barbara) Gerry Caron (Kathleen) David Weber (Louise) James Miller Thomas Suggs (Janice) Ronald Langfitt Edward Woodward (Joy) William Schoonover Ron Preuit (Marilyn) Marilyn Preuit (Ron) Jerry Martin Jackie Corbett (Tom) Tom Corbett (Jackie) Dennis Bowen (Yvonne) Yvonne Bowen (Dennis) Gene Jones (Lee) Edward Crosby (Marie) David Moser (Reba) Reba Moser (David) Douglas Letsinger (Kathy) Kathy Letsinger (Doug) Larry Kelly Tony Adams (Linda) Linda Adams (Tony) Shawn Waller (Tami) Tami Waller (Shawn) Cothran Duncan Scott Siler (Lois) Gary Underwood (Mary) Mary Underwood (Gary) Barry Wynott (Donna) Donna Wynott (Barry) Larry Senglaub (Kaye) John Kriletich (Jan) Jan Kriletich (John) Donnie Reed (Sue) Jerry Mueller (Sachiko) Sachiko Mueller (Jerry) (CITY, STATE) Titusville, FL Vail, AZ Luna Pier, MI Fairhope, AL Opelousas, LA Opelousas, LA Beavercreek, OH Chandler, OK San Antonio, TX Glenwood, IA Tijeras, NM Lugoff, SC Wichita, KS Parrish, FL Morrow, LA Harpers Ferry, WV Harpers Ferry, WV Adel, GA Mineral Bluff, GA Mineral Bluff, GA New Iberia, LA New Iberia, LA San Antonio, TX Taylorsville, MS Prairieville, LA Prairieville, LA Monroe, LA Monroe, LA Gillette, WY Washington, NC Washington, NC Bogalusa, LA Bogalusa, LA Cleveland, GA Yakima, WA Hoover, AL Hoover, AL Dayton, NV Dayton, NV Laughlin, NV Pensacola, FL Pensacola, FL Sherwood, AR Vacaville, CA Vacaville, CA (RECRUITER) R Fortune L Deisering A Heyob C Kuzma Pearcy/Leblanc Pearcy/Leblanc S Hudak C Hundley J Maust Trailer Life 12950J Anderson K Hardman L Collins J Stephens L Finkle A Haynes A Haynes J Stubbs R Meyer R Meyer J Katin P Hill C Christen C Christen R Engel R Meyer R Meyer Welcome again to all our new members of SMART (If you have any questions please contact Melissa 0r Phyllis at HQ) smart@smartrving.org 4 5 Don’t want to travel alone, join the Amana River Caravan to Amana for the National Muster….. Call HQ to reserve. Road to Amana River Adventure Caravan John Steinbauer, Wagon Master While I’m sure everyone aware this caravan will be run in conjunction with the 2016 National, I would appreciate it if you would take a fresh look at the itinerary and consider joining us on this great adventure. You will see the caravan arrives in Amana on 15 Sep which is early enough to do some sightseeing to places not offered by the National. We will be assigned to a site at the Amana National campground and will not have to move to another for the National. If it’s been awhile since you were on a caravan, or maybe never been on one, this is an excellent opportunity to support the caravan program and have a good time too. During the three caravans Kathy and I have led, caravan members have left the caravan temporarily to attend weddings, the births of grandchildren and other important family events. We are very flexible and will work with you to make the schedule feasible. It does not matter what type of unit you have to camp..we have room for all types from pop-ups to the big motor homes. If your personal situation won’t allow you to sign-up for this caravan, please continue to support the caravan program by signing up for one of the others. Please continue to publicize our caravans through your fellow SMART members, or friends who are eligible to join SMART. Our caravans are significantly less expensive than the commercial ones and you get to enjoy the camaraderie we can only enjoy as veterans along with our families. For example, the Winnebago Outdoor Adventures is running a similar caravan for 40 days versus our 37 for $6300 less a 10% discount if you are a Winnebago Club member… ours is $3700! http://wgoadventures.com/events/great-river-road-caravan-2016/ As you may know, caravans are one of the important revenue sources for SMART and we need to run as many as possible to insure the future financial viability of SMART. Thanks for carefully considering joining us on this great adventure. 7 Road to Amana River Adventure Caravan 29 Aug -18 Sep (19-25 Sep S*M*A*R*T National) 26 Sep-12 Oct (depart) Wagon Masters: Kathy and John Steinbauer, kjsteinbauer@comcast.net 210-386-9018 (John Cell) 210-386-9024 (Kathy Cell) Assistant Wagon Masters: Jean and Paul Rider, afchap@gmail.com 903-574-1217 (Paul cell) and 903-5740824 (Jean cell) Cost: $3700 two person; $2800 one person; $1000 each additional person Deposits and Payments: $280 upon application; 50% by six months prior to start; Full Payment: three months prior to start Number of Days: 37 nights; Caravan Limit: 18 RVs plus WM and AWM; 1065 mile caravan in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri staying at nine RV parks. We will be staying at the Amana RV Park and Event Center, location of the 2016 S*M*A*R*T National. After the National, the caravan will resume on 26 Sep and continue seeing the sights via Galena, IL, Davenport, IA, Hannibal, and St Louis, MO where the caravan will terminate and depart on 12 Oct. Traveling thru Alberta Canada we stop at Lake Louise and the Jasper Ice Fields. Than on to the start of the Alaska Highway at Dawson Creek, BC. Laird Hot Springs is a must for most people to stop and take a dip in the Beautiful pools. In Alaska we stop at Skagway, Tok, Valdez, Homer Spit, Seward, Denali, Fairbanks , Anchorage, and Chicken. The return trip is thru Dawson City, Yukon and British Columbia with stops at Istuk, Steward/Hyder and Hinton BC. We travel to the Bear Watch, Salmon Glacier and the KASN First Nation Clan Houses. Just ask the person what year that story comes from! I have found the roads better in Canada and Alaska than in the lower 48. Ackerman Winery is proud to have the distinct honor of being the oldest operating winery in the state of Iowa. It all started in the basement of the South Amana home of Harry and Louisa Ackerman in 1956. They produced one hundred gallons each of Concord Grape and Rhubarb. In 1974, their son Les Ackerman along with his wife Linda took over operations and carried on the wine-making tradition for over 40 years – producing 15,000+ gallons of wine annually and expanding the wine list from two to over twenty different styles of wine. In 2001, the Ackerman’s moved their Winery from near their home in South Amana to main Amana. Three Amana men decided to revive the art that had not been practiced in the Amana Colonies for years - the art of brewing beer. Carroll F. Zuber and brothers James and Dennis Roemig dreamed of building a small brewery to produce small batches of hand brewed beer reminiscent of Europe's finest. To brew the best they needed the best, so they called on one of America's premier brewers, Joseph Pickett Sr., who helped in the brewery design, in the development of the beers, Millstream Lager and the robust, Schild Brau. Later, Millstream brewers, developed the zesty Millstream Wheat Beer. In 1985 Millstream Brewing Co. opened its doors - the first brewery to operate in Amana since 1884. So the Millstream Brewery was born and so it has come to be recognized as the home of quality brews of rewarding taste. The Story Continues in 2000 with the sale of the brewery to Chris Priebe, Tom and Teresa Albert. Chris is naturally handy and keeps the brewery in tip-top shape. Chris also is a trained brewer from the Siebel Institute of Brewing Technology and has brought many years of brewing experience to Millstream. Teresa is an excellent people person and handles all the sales and marketing. Tom is our warehouse and production manager. He is the "glue" that binds the place together. It takes a good team to run a good brewery! These owners are committed to continually making quality brews, one batch at a time. With a current count of 33 national awards and 1 international award, Millstream speaks of some of the finest beer made in the Midwest today. The brewers have introduced many different styles of beer to Millstream Brewery and with the passing of the higher alcohol law change in spring of 2010, many more styles will be coming out! The Brewery hopes to be able to reach out to local consumers in new and exciting ways. 11 SMART, Inc and iGive Almost everyone has heard of the iGive donation program where SMART receives donations when purchases are made at more than 1700 on-line stores. We are only starting to generate funds for our Club and believe the potential is great, especially if members, their friends, and families also participate! This article will provide guidance to sign-up for iGive and designate SMART, Inc as your designated charity and also designate another charity to receive donations through the Amazon Smile program. First to join the iGive donation progam and designate SMART, Inc go to http://www.igive.com/HzLexrD All you need to do is fill in the information and follow the directions to download the iGive button on your laptop or desktop computer. We have found this process does not always work well on Android smart phones, Iphones, nor tablets. However, you can get an iGive “App” for your phone and it does seem to work fine. When you shop on-line, click the iGive button on your desktop which will take you to your iGive website page. From there you can identify companies selling items you want to buy and also make companies your favorites by clicking the icon to add a store to your favorite's list so you'll easily be able to visit them once you login to your personal iGive page. If you shop with companies other than Amazon/ Amazon Prime you will receive an e-mail from iGive letting you know a donation has been made to SMART, Inc. Purchases made on Amazon/Amazon Prime will not generate an e-mail to you confirming the purchase and amount. You cannot designate SMART, Inc on Amazon Smile because they require organizations to be a 501 (C) 3 and we are a 501 (C) 19 non-profit organization. iGive does not have this requirement but acknowledges Amazon as a valid organization for donations and SMART receives a donation. Additional information can be found at http://support.igive.com/kb/a115/how-igive-works.aspx If you run into problems, you may contact Paul Rider afchap@gmail.com or John Steinbauer at kjsteinbauer@comcast.net for assistance or iGive Technical Support by clicking here. There were 7 rigs attending our January Muster at Sugar Mill RV Park in Ochlocknee, GA; Cosi and Kathy Baccomo, Winston and Joyce Posey, Keith and Colleen Hardman, Denny and Nancy Sloan, Holly and Lou Boros, Tom and Janice Suggs and lastly Curt and Audrey Crowe. Cosi and Winston with their lovely wives Kathy and Joyce were our superb hosts! The food was nothing short of great as we all ate well and watched our waist lines stretch outward slightly. Cosi was our main Chef and should receive an A+!!!! Our dinner out was at the Seminole Wind Buffet where we enjoyed down home cooking and several varieties of cooked shrimp, fish, BBQ, chicken and stuffed crab. Cosi provided many door prizes at our meals which we all enjoyed and had many laughs over. Our weather was cold, windy and at times there was some liquid sunshine, especially the Friday that we departed. “Noah” would’ve had fun with his ark. Most of us sat around a nice campfire by the Posey’s rig on those evenings that were cold and windy. Winston was an excellent fire marshal………… Our two new couples Lou and Holly Boros and Tom and Janice Suggs are really down home folks. The Suggs enjoyed themselves with us so much that Tom and Janice joined SMART and our Chapter during the Muster. Holly and Lou Boros are relatively new members and Holly is a qualified firearms Instructor and participates in competition shooting. She would like to give a talk to our ladies about self-defense issues which we men probably could use a refresher in also. Please join us at our next at Muster Brickyard Plantation RV Park, Monday, 14 Mar-Friday , 18 Mar 2016 in Americus, GA. See our website for more details. The Buccaneers have been hard at work, along with our co-hosts, the South Florida Gold Coasters, in preparing for the 2016 SE Region Muster. Scheduled for 27 April – 2 May at Tropical Palms RV Resort, Kissimmee FL, it promises to be a real fun time in a fantastic area with loads of stuff to do and things to see. Kissimmee is adjacent to Disney and Universal Studios, Sea World, and all of their activities and we have secured 3 days prior to and 3 days following the muster at the muster rate for our members. All sites are full hook-ups, both 30 and 50 amp service, with cable and WiFi. We have several meals included, entertainment by ‘Sounds of Time’, a scheduled golf tournament, and two tours – Wild Florida, Orlando’s only air boat and Gator Park experience; and a tour of the Museum of Military History followed by dinner and a show at Capone’s, reminiscent of Chicago in the 1930s. Check out the information on the new SMART website and come join us. Deadline for the MAY TRAVELER will be April 20th. (Chapter News) SMART E-NEWS will just be for HQ and BOD info to members 13 The South Florida Gold Coasters chapter held its first muster for 2016 in February at the Sunshine Travel RV Park in Vero Beach, FL. This muster is our annual Valentine Day celebration which lasts for 5 days. In addition to attending the Valentines dance, which is hosted by the RV Park, we also did plenty of sightseeing around the surrounding area. While visiting these fabulous sites, we also managed to find many (far too many) places to enjoy the fine dining facilities the area has to offer. Some of the places of interest that we visited were: The Hallstrom House, named after the original settler, and served as a Swedish pineapple plantation, supported by immigrants. This is a beautifully restored brick home that has a colorful history in itself, and is located on the outskirts of Vero Beach. During its glory days, it was very big in the pineapple industry, but then a deep freeze wiped out the trees, and today it is relegated to a learning center. In addition to the Hallstrom House, we visited McKee Botanical Garden, where we enjoyed the garden sights and sounds, but also had the pleasure of viewing a display of some very expensive classic cars. Just to make sure that we stayed busy, we visited the old train depot in downtown Vero where we had a private tour, and history lesson, of the depot. This was provided by a retired train engineer. In addition to the discussion of the trains in Vero, he also gave a great overview of the impact that the train had on the growth, and impact on the agriculture in the Indian River County. This was very informative and enjoyed by all. After all this, we had a very good lunch at Grumpy Burger. This was a different type burger than what you’d get at McDonalds or Wendy’s. They also had other kinds of sandwiches and salads on the menu. Then for something different, we went out to eat one evening at Squid Lips Seafood restaurant. The seating is over the water, and the meal and drinks were enjoyed by all. We would then retire to the club house where a game of your choice could be played. During one of the days, we had a learning session on the updates of the SMART web site. This was a refresher course for those that were not aware of the changes, or had not had a chance to visit the new pages. In the upcoming months, we plan on attending a pre-planning session, 01 - 06 April, in preparation for the SE Regional Muster that is scheduled for 27 April – 2 May. Both of these meetings will be held at Tropical Palms in Kissimmee, FL. If you are looking for a great vacation, which is loaded with fun for all, you should plan on attending. For more information, please check out the SE Region bulletin board. The deadline for registering for this event is 1 March. After the SE Regional, our next muster activity is scheduled to be held in October, and includes our Halloween activities. This is held in Port ST. Lucie, FL. The dates will be published on the Chapter and SMART web pages. We are looking forward to another great year of SMART activities, and look forward to seeing our many friends, and making new ones. Please contact merle.dodge@gmail.com for additional information. Merle Dodge—President of Gold Coasters 14 The FLORIDA SUNSHINE FEBRUARY MUSTER was held at the Lake City RV Resort in Lake City, FL. With 54 people in attendance, our hosts for the Muster, Lana and Jim Jenkins and Steve & Sarah Colt provided great food, lots of fun games, camaraderie and an hilarious evening of “The Not So Newly Wed Game” ! In addition to all the fun, we also had the pleasure of welcoming 10 new members to our Chapter. Union Camp Union attacks Confederate forces march into battle Undoubtedly the highlight of our Muster was attending the Re-enactment of the only major Civil War battle in Florida, the Battle of Olustee. In February 1864 the South was successful in repelling the Union forces during this battle that took place over a period of several hours. Union casualties were 203 killed, 1,152 wounded, and 506 missing, a total of 1,861 men. Confederate losses were lower: 93 killed, 847 wounded, and 6 missing, a total of 946 casualties in all. Watching the battle from the sidelines At the Olustee Parade we ran into President Lincoln Battle over – South prevails A side trip to nearby Stephen Foster State Park Our April Muster will be held April 6-10, 2016 at the Cedar Keys RV Resort in Cedar Keys, Fl. 15 SOUTH CENTRAL REGION Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Panhandle, Louisiana, Mississippi Tennessee REGIONAL DIRECTOR: Denny Olvany olvanydna@gmail.com 601-819-0450 Rocky Top and Ohio Valley SMART Chapters Our chapters have been sort of dormant over the winter months. We don’t have the luxury of living close and getting together once the camping season ceases. It would be nice if we could though. Some of our members have had been a little under the weather. Terilu Christen had heart surgery during December, 2015. She and Craig are in their new home in Crossville, Tn. I’m sure that Craig was busy, but took great care of Terilu. Marlene Thomas has a terrible back issue. She and Glen were in Big Cypress, Fla. Marlene was having severe pain in her legs. After several tests and medications, she had a slipped disc in her lower back. She and Glen returned to Crossville, expecting to have surgery, but when she saw her doctor, she found out that surgery could not be done without trying Physical Therapy and some injections. She has been in terrible pain. Please keep her and Glen in your prayers. Linda Fowler, part of our Ohio Valley chapter, had a bad auto accident recently. It totaled the car and left Linda feeling pretty banged up. Her husband, Ray, is playing nurse trying to make her feel better. We wish them all a speedy recovery. Looks like several of our husbands have taken on the role of caregiver. Sometimes it is important that our roles change in life. It is not the way we planned it, but it does happen. It is that way with new members. When they join, they are excited and yet apprehensive about this new group they are going to meet. It is important that when a new member joins a chapter that they are made to feel welcome. A phone call from the President of the chapter, an email to welcome them, and always being available to answer their questions. If your chapter is like ours and cannot get together over the winter months, an email is the next best thing to being there. So, connect, stay in touch and make it fun. Wayne and Linda Ballard have been in Pensacola, Fl for the winter. The weather has been nasty until just the past few days. Finally, better weather, sunshine, and good temperatures. Steve and Nancy Hudak, Rocky Top and Ohio Valley Chapter members, are also in the Panhandle area of Florida. They attended many Mardi Gras parades and have enjoyed their time here. We’ve heard that John and Martha Averitt, Rocky Top Chapter members, are in the area also, but haven’t seen them. Well Spring is not too far away. Get out your pressure washers, dust mops and dust rags and get your rig shining. We are about to hit the roads of this great country of ours, the United States of America. The SMART Arkansas Diamonds opened the 2016 season with our first meeting of the year this week in Bella Vista, Arkansas. A poll was taken and so far the chapter has 4 rigs going to the SC Regional to be held at the end of April, with a hope of a couple more. Our Web page coordinator, Sandy Pearcy, filled us in on our new website, in conjunction with the new SMART National Website. We are thrilled to be part of this new means of showing our support of SMART! Afterwards, the chapter treated its members to a Pizza Dinner and it was delicious! Our next meeting in March will be a Dutch treat luncheon at the EGG & I Restaurant, in Rogers, Arkansas. Membership recruiting is for all of SMART, and not just STAR Chapter Members, but we all know that only a few actually do the work. This is just a fact of life, and is true in all organizations around this Great Nation. Some members have worked hard in the past, and I say Thank You, for your recruiting efforts. All SMART Members are eligible to become STAR members by recruiting five or more new persons into joining SMART. What I am asking all to do is, EXPOSE SMART at your RV, Park area, overnight Walmart parking area, craft show or anyplace you can get information out and get the Veterans interest. Make it a personal goal to get at least one new member to join SMART National and your local Chapter. Some have already achieved this goal and are continuing recruiting. To them a very Special Thanks. Safe Travels, Roger A. Meyer - STAR President 18 FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S DESK THE LIFE OF THE POOR? One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip? “It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked. “Oh yeah,” said the son. “So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. “We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. “We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. “We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.” Moral: Love, Unity, Care, Satisfaction is richer than any comfort money gives. It is a place for members and those interested in joining S*M*A*R*T to share comments, photos, and videos of their camping adventures and to provide info for prospective S*M*A*R*T members. It is an ideal place for S*M*A*R*T Chapters to post muster photos and information about their chapter and see the latest SMART Traveler and E-News. One must have a Facebook account and be accepted as a member to view and post. Members of the group can add their Facebook friends but an Administrator (John Steinbauer or Paul Rider) must approve. It is a closed Group which means only members can view posts. As a service to Group members, "personal" RV related "for sale" items may be posted on the wall. The Group is authorized by SMART HQ, however, the views and comments by individual members do not represent those of HQ SMART. Do You Use Your S*M*A*R*T Timeshare? John Steinbauer, National 2nd Vice President Do you own a commercial timeshare or ever been to one their presentations to receive a “free” gift card? If so, you are aware of the benefits of being able to travel and stay in “far away” places all over the USA. A “Time-Share” owner also enjoys using a central reservation system. When you think about it, SMART offers a similar service since we are able to attend National, Regional, and chapter musters all over the country whether we are a member of the chapter or not. Your “Time-Share” is what you travel in and instead of belonging to a commercial company with yearly maintenance fees, your SMART membership is all you need. All SMART members and those eligible to join are welcome to attend chapter musters as guests without any obligation. At last count we have over 70 chapter musters plus Regional’s and the National scheduled. Activities include seminars, sightseeing, hiking, riding bikes, playing both indoor and outdoor games, dining out, and having pot luck dinners. We like having a good time together and enjoying the camaraderie no other group knows. Using the new SMART website, it is easy to locate a muster along your travels by chapter, Region or by date. Just go to http://www.smartrving2.org/core/event.php to contact the host or muster master to make the arrangements. ..it’s that easy.
