Together they make up a vast destination where nature reigns supreme and the environment is a source of inspiration. COte-NOrd (ManicOuagan and Duplessis) © Pietro Canali v Côte-Nord is vast, wild and spectacular. Made up of the tourist regions of Manicouagan and Duplessis, it extends from Tadoussac to Blanc-Sablon and from the north shore of the St. Lawrence northward, to where the boreal forest gives way to the taiga. Out at sea and from the shore, up to 13 species of whales can be observed in this region. Côte-Nord is a land of extremes, from the Saguenay Fjord to the canyons of Anticosti Island, not to mention the mysterious monoliths of the Mingan Archipelago. © Marc Loiselle Gaspésie Gaspésie is a land of contrasts. While 25 of the highest peaks in Québec are found in the interior of this vast peninsula, the Gaspé coast is surrounded by unique beaches and unforgettable views. Not only is this region home to legendary Percé Rock, but it also boasts four national parks, world-renowned salmon rivers, a rich history and a multitude of talented chefs, artists and artisans. Bas-Saint-Laurent Bas-Saint-Laurent is a rich blend of coastal, rural and forest scenery. The influence of the sea and land can be felt throughout this region, both in the architecture of the houses and on the menus of the region’s many fine restaurants. In addition, islands, lakes and rivers offer both hard and soft adventure opportunities. 2 © Ron Garnett/Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine © Pietro Canali Îles de la Madeleine A green archipelago surrounded by white-sand beaches and red cliffs, the windswept Îles de la Madeleine exert a magnetic attraction. Located in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Islands are ideal for wind and sea sports. Fish and seafood abound in local restaurants, including the renowned Island lobster. The natural beauty of the archipelago also inspires the many talented local artisans who create unique works of art for you to take home. Using our maps, design your own itinerary that suits your tastes and time frame. The Whale ROute The Gaspésie TOur The Gaspésie TOur The Whale ROute © Marc Loiselle The Gaspésie Tour is a legendary scenic route that loops around the huge Gaspé Peninsula. For those who appreciate the sea, contrasting landscapes and sea breezes, we offer a spectacular seaside drive that begins in the region of Bas-Saint-Laurent: Route 132 will take you to Land’s End, from the Kamouraska region to Gaspé via famous Percé Rock. The Whale Route follows Route 138 from Tadoussac to the end of the road in Natashquan. From there, continue your journey aboard an authentic supply ship that will take you from village to village all the way to Blanc-Sablon. Stop at various designated sites along the Whale Route to observe whales from the shore or participate in whale-watching cruises. In addition, two renowned research centres open their doors to visitors who want to learn more about these giants of the sea. Îles de la Madeleine Îles de la Madeleine © Sébastien Larose 4 © Jean-Sébastien Cloutier Anticosti Island Shaped like an elongated fish hook, the Îles de la Madeleine archipelago stretches across a distance of 65 km (40 mi.). The Islands can easily be explored during a series of day trips from your lodging site. However, the fun begins even before you set foot on the archipelago: whether you opt for a cruise departing from Montréal or Chandler (Gaspésie), or take the ferry from Prince Edward Island, your trip to the Islands is sure to be a memorable experience! Whether you are an expert or novice, you will find specialized companies that offer you a safe and memorable experience. A WORLD OF ADVENTURE AND RELAXATION The history of the maritime regions of Québec is preserved in historic sites and heritage buildings. Lighthouses, traditional buildings associated with the cod fishery, museums and legends bear witness to a past that forged our present. Even the cliffs, such as those at Miguasha and in Côte-Nord, keep fabulous secrets that take visitors back in time some 380 million years! © Éric Marchand/L'île imagin'air © Pietro Canali © Daniel Mallard/Sépaq © Steve Deschênes/Sépaq Québec maritime is covered by a vast network of trails that offer opportunities for recreational walks or longer hikes. National park trails, the International Appalachian Trail, the National Trail in Bas-Saint-Laurent and many others will take you to breathtaking views, in the forest, on mountains or along the shore. 10 © Jardins des glaciers de Baie-Comeau 10/3/11 Whether you are adventurous or just want to relax and unwind, why not try wind sports: surfing, kiting, land sailing and kite surfing are just some of the possibilities. The sea as well as lagoons and lakes are great places to harness the power of the wind. You will soon be hooked! © Pilar Macias/Tourisme Bas-Saint-Laurent MAQUETTE_BrochureQM_Été 2011_EN_v1:Layout 1 Explore the regions of Québec maritime by bike in national parks and on the Route Verte cycling trail, which is particularly well established in Bas-Saint-Laurent. The rotation of its light is still driven by means of the original clockwork mechanism controlled by weights and cables, making it the only non-automated lighthouse in the province.
