Today, he is a beacon of charitable light in the St. Louis community, thanks to the 220 philanthropic initiatives funded over the last 10 years through the Seeser Family Fund, a donor advised fund administered by the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. When Jim, his wife Judy, and son Adrian considered formalizing their charitable activities, they initially wanted to create a foundation, but found it to be complicated and expensive. “We needed lawyers, a board of directors, and special tax returns,” Jim said. “Frankly, I wanted as much money as possible to be directed to good works, not to supporting our charitable-giving apparatus.” A flexible and personalized approach to giving That’s when Jim was referred to the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. “This organization does 90 percent of what an independent foundation could do, at a fraction of the cost,” he said. “They set up an approach designed specifically for me and my family, and they continue to be a resource for us as we contribute to causes and activities we’re passionate about.” Over the years, Jim has supported the Central Institute for the Deaf, which is dear to his heart, as both of his parents were deaf. “I look for three things when considering a gift to a nonprofit,” said Jim. “First, I need to understand the organization and its mission; then I must be convinced that the gift will make a difference; and finally, I want to contribute to groups where I can be personally involved.” Seeser Family Fund holy redeemer parochial school My wife and I appreciate being able to make our own planned gifts to the fund established by my father, and we look forward to using the resources of the Foundation to reinforce the concept of conscientious philanthropy to our young daughters. - Adrian Seeser Jim also gives his son discretion to make recommendations on charitable initiatives that are meaningful to him. “He and his family will eventually take control of the fund,” said Jim. “It’s important that he understands the process and the responsibilities, and the people at the Community Foundation have helped both of us.” Most importantly, Jim loves the sense of satisfaction he derives from his philanthropic activities. One cause seems to energize him like no other – his support of the FIRST® robotics competition. This initiative not only teaches young people science and technology applications, but also helps them approach the challenge like a business. They create budgets, raise money, and set deadlines. KEVIN CARROLL ELEMENT “It shows them the joys of pursuing a goal and watching it reach fruition. Their enthusiasm is contagious!” said Jim. “For me, it mirrors my sense of satisfaction when I see the wonderful things we’ve helped fund through the Community Foundation. There’s nothing like it!” JIM SEESER SUBSTANCE Arnold W. & Hazel A. Funded by the Kresge Foundation and currently in its initial stages, the resulting programming will serve as a catalyst for community sustainability. INVESTL inveSTL is dedicated to supporting the development of great neighborhoods in the St. Louis region. Founded by young community development professionals leading neighborhood revitalization, the charitable fund accepts donations and makes grants that are intended to strengthen communities. The Community Foundation serves on the organization’s steering committee, provides backbone financial support, co-chairs Scholarship Central, the regional portal where students can access private scholarship and loan resources, and administers the St. Louis Graduates Scholarship program. home works! Home Works!, The Teacher Home Visit Program, began as a pilot project of Community Foundation donor Karen Kalish to support families and schools as they work together to improve the educational experience of children. Now in dozens of schools across the region, Home Works! provides the training and skills needed to help teachers raise their students’ grades by getting to know and engaging the families of their students. The Foundation provides strategic counsel, financial services, and the nonprofit umbrella needed by Home Works! to achieve its mission. Cardinals Care REDBIRD ROOKIE SCHOLARS fund “We rely on the expertise of the Community Foundation to run our scholarship program and shepherd our student recipients.” - Keith Brooks, Youth Baseball Commissioner, Cardinals Care cityarchriver 2015 Walter Metcalfe (photo opposite), Senior Counsel at Bryan Cave LLP, and other St. Louisans partnered with the National Park Service and the City of St. Louis to form CityArchRiver 2015 and bring increased vitality to the Gateway Arch, the iconic landmark that anchors the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the St. Louis skyline. With a mission to connect, invigorate, and expand the park’s grounds and museums, the organization’s projects will begin by closing Memorial Drive and covering the interstate highway with a new, dramatic park that will allow visitors to walk from the city’s Old Courthouse to the Arch grounds and riverfront on one continuous greenway. The Community Foundation serves as the back office and administrator for CityArchRiver 2015. WALTER METCALFE ELEMENT A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO For nearly 100 years, the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation has been helping individuals, families, and businesses put their charitable dollars to work for organizations and causes they care about the most. We are a resource not only for donors, but also for nonprofits seeking assistance in achieving their mission. It is this long tradition of being a philanthropic and community partner that has been the cornerstone of the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. Saint Louis is my home. It frames my family’s memories. I love this community. That’s why it is an honor to lead the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. Since assuming this role in January, I have become acquainted with many of you, our diverse and dedicated group of donors, advisors, and community supporters. I’ve also enjoyed the privilege of getting to know the numerous nonprofits serving our community and seeing firsthand the impact they have on the lives of so many. This year, the board of directors took important steps to strengthen the Foundation’s future impact. We started the year with a new President and CEO, Amelia Bond. After a national search, it was clear that the ideal candidate to take our Foundation to the next level was someone in our own backyard – a person with extensive experience in building relationships and growing assets. Amelia hit the ground running. We are confident that her passion and enthusiasm for our Foundation and our community will produce huge dividends in years to come. Thank you, Laurna C. Godwin With a new CEO at the helm, the board felt it was an opportune time to examine where the Foundation is and, more importantly, where we should go. We rededicated ourselves to our mission – to increase the impact of charitable giving now and forever, which is why we have also embraced our new motto, “Giving for Good.” We want to inspire people to give for the good of our community and do so for years to come. We also outlined our core values: collaboration, community leadership, exemplary service, stewardship, and expertise. Last, but most importantly, we set a bold goal – one that calls for growing our community grantmaking on behalf of our donors to $100 million in 15 years! This goal is necessary because the need in our community is so great. We hope you will join us as we work to achieve our goal and to prepare for our second century of service. A strong and vibrant future awaits not only the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation, but also our community. Community foundations are the fastest growing form of organized philanthropy and play a catalytic role in the communities they serve. During fiscal 2012, we invested a total of $17 million in programs and scholarships on behalf of our donors. Eighty percent of these contributions stayed right here in the Saint Louis region. Our goal is to help our donors direct $100 million annually in grants into our community by 2027. Thanks to our donors, we received more than $27 million in new gifts this fiscal year and more than $125 million in new assets over the last five years. Currently, we have a total of $200 million in assets and administer more than 400 funds. Our mission is to make giving easy by creating good chemistry with our donors, nonprofits, and professional advisors. We assess our donors’ goals and offer them personalized solutions – whether we are providing strategic-giving advice or offering tax-advantaged insights. Donors are able to continue working with their trusted professional advisors and have the flexibility to determine the degree of public visibility for their gifts. Together, we create enduring change in the Saint Louis region. At-risk children have a better start; remarkable Saint Louis institutions, like the zoo, the art museum, and the symphony, receive generous gifts; and countless specialized organizations enjoy vital support. We also work with other funding partners to offer scholarships and bring national grant dollars to Saint Louis that strengthen our neighborhoods. We help connect people to the most promising strategies and resources available to tackle community problems. That’s what it means to be your community foundation. Before closing, I want to thank our board of directors – especially Board Chair Laurna Godwin – for their unwavering support. I want to also recognize the Foundation’s talented staff. Each of them has been an invaluable resource for me over the past year. I appreciate their drive, dedication, and devotion to our donors, the Foundation, and our mission. Finally, thank you for your continued generosity, support, and commitment to making our community a better place today and for generations to come. Until next year, Amelia A.J.
