Summary: As the research has not taken place it is hard to say exactly how it will unfold. It is however important that this kind of context-specific knowledge and experiences be captured through further participatory research into the men and women of sXe and their coping strategies to their unusual lifestyle choice and cultural violence. This will be sought through the lens of cultural and political geography. Bibliography/References: ▪ Barlett, (2006)."Study Rock's Clean, Mean Movement". Definition: Straight Edge (also written as "sXe") is a movement spawned within the hardcore scene in the '80s. Its followers have made a commitment to abstain from drug taking, excessive drinking (or complete abstinence), caffeine, promiscuous sex, and are usually vegetarian or vegan. Many are involved in peaceful environmental activism and sXe is wholly different to other types of Punk. Male and female SXE also express their activism in different ways even though the gender roles appear to overlap within SXE. Exploring the core values of SXE the applicant will use research to find a correlation between respect for self and respect for the environment. ▪ My position in relation to the research. This research wants to analyse the preconceived ideas of what a Punk is by government and society. By investigating sXe who are also part of the Punk movement, the research will bring to light that as a lifestyle choice sXe shows empathy for the environment, respect for women by sXe men and involves self-governance. I have been sXe for 32 years. I personally believe that sXe is an example to youth how to live free of substance abuse and show empathy to the environment. People have always judged me as a Punk yet I have never used drugs or tobacco and alcohol free from 1980-1995. Now I rarely drink and I am a vegan. Research Questions: The aim is to research the clean living aspect of SXE within a Cultural Geography and Politics context and finally ask why male and female sXe behave in such away that shows a different subcultural resistance from other forms of Punk and society in general. Part of that will involve the applicant to hypothesize did sXe attract environmental activists or did it turn those joining the subculture of sXe into environmental activists? ▪ ▪ ▪ Why did sXe break away from Punk? Was sXe an environmental movement? How and why does cultural violence affect sXe? Comparable studies & Theoretical context: Key informers: ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ John Robb Vivienne Westwood Johan Gultang Straight Edge punks via social networking sites and interviews pto sXe was a movement that created strategies to create a new world and new ways to live counter to the norms in society. Meanwhile the establishment wanted to preserve the old by strategizing cultural violence against the Punk movement (Mitchell 2000). This will be analyzed by researching and downloading Parliament sittings 1977-1990 in which Punk is discussed and contacting the MPs who made negative statements to see their view point in 2012. While there is little existing research considering the linkages between sXe, clean living as an environmental movement and the cultural violence imposed on Punk by society and government, there is a wealth of literature on gender roles, cultural geography/politics and the genre of sXe.
