Newport offers charter boats, launching and moorage facilities, and boat and equipment rentals. Crabbing and clamming are popular activities. The historic bayfront has restaurants, shopping, art galleries, a unique museum, and a waxworks. On the south side of the bay, the Oregon Coast Aquarium showcases the beauty and diversity of sea life along the Oregon coast. Nearby, the Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center has marine displays created by Oregon State University scientists. Newport’s Seafood and Wine Festival is a popular event in late February. The city also stages a Fourth of July fireworks show. Head, Beverly Beach State Park’s creekside campground is one of the state’s largest. Some campsites and the park’s day-use area are just steps away from miles of ocean beach. You can get up-to-date information by calling 1-800-551-6949 or visiting www.oregonstateparks.org. Discovery Season From October 1–April 30, you can rent a full, electric, or tent site for less. At most state parks, including Beverly Beach, you can get $4 off summer rates. A yurt is a domed tent with structural support, a wood floor, and a lockable wooden door. It has lights, heating, and beds with vinyl-covered mattresses. A bunk bed sleeps three and a futon couch sleeps two. A fire ring, picnic table, and paved parking are right outside. Up to two pets (cats and/or dogs only) are allowed in the pet-friendly facilities. A Learning Environment Learn about bats, raccoons, beavers, and salmon from our interpretive programs and nature trail displays. Live evening presentations and Junior Ranger activities are offered Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can also learn about the relationship between healthy streams and salmon migrations by following the Spencer Creek Nature Trail. Watch the creek empty into the ocean along this short trail leading under a highway bridge from the park’s creekside day-use area. More to See 63400-8211 (2/13) Depoe Bay, north of Cape Foulweather, has boating facilities, a charter boat fleet, and a spouting horn, which emits a geyser-like spray when ocean waves surge into the tunneled rock formations.
