The Apple/Samsung dispute, Windows 8, Gears of War and the BT block of pirate sites are all being discussed by over 1 in 10 of the population. With the great majority of the UK not having heard about the new Deus Ex video game, or the FA Cup match to be streamed on Facebook, these stories fall down the list. But bear in mind the relatively low proportion who are aware (the same goes for Deus Ex and BlackBerry’s music service announcement). Windows 8, unveiled as a reinvention of the OS optimised for touchscreen, also receives similar interest and will no doubt increase further in the run up to its actual release in 2012. Despite considerable awareness, Big Brother stands out more as being something over half of those aware couldn’t care less about. It ranks #19th in our all-time excitement list (see later in report). The unveiling of Windows 8 OS remains high in our list, only falling behind Big Brother (which will have an established fan-base following from previous series and driven by relatively high awareness). n/a (excitement not asked) Yahoo! put up for sale 20 20 5% 1% 3% 3% 15% 5% 4% 3% 17% 12% 11% 2% 31% 35% 32% 28% 32% 46% 51% 64% Very excited 1% 3% <1% 5% 2% Somewhat excited 5% 6% 3% 15% 7% 1% 1% Not at all excited 6% 7% 5% 14% 5% 5% 3% 4% Couldn’t care less 4% 5% 3% 4% 5% 3% 1% 6% Unfamiliar 84% 80% 88% 61% 81% 91% 94% 90% Very excited 2% 2% 2% 8% 2% 1% <1% 1% Somewhat excited 5% 8% 3% 7% 8% 5% 3% 3% Not at all excited 13% 17% 9% 16% 14% 14% 12% 8% Couldn’t care less 6% 8% 4% 5% 4% 8% 8% 5% Unfamiliar 74% 64% 84% 64% 72% 73% 77% 84% Very excited 2% 4% <1% 8% 3% <1% Somewhat excited 5% 7% 3% 9% 12% 2% <1% Not at all excited 6% 8% 4% 14% 9% 4% 4% Couldn’t care less 3% 2% 3% 2% 5% 3% 1% 1% Unfamiliar 85% 79% 90% 68% 71% 91% 94% 99% Google buy M 13% 20% 14% 27% 26% HP software Very excited 5% 4% 6% Somewhat excited 9% 10% 9% Not at all excited 12% 12% 12% Couldn’t care less 31% 32% 30% Unfamiliar 43% 43% 44% Very excited 2% 2% 1% 7% 2% <1% Somewhat excited 5% 7% 3% 10% 8% 2% 3% 1% Not at all excited 9% 14% 5% 15% 10% 10% 7% 5% Couldn’t care less 6% 8% 3% 3% 3% 8% 8% 6% Unfamiliar 78% 69% 88% 64% 77% 80% 81% 88% Star Wars BD n/a (excitement not asked) Very excited 2% 4% <1% 5% 4% Somewhat excited 4% 6% 1% 7% 6% Not at all excited 11% 15% 7% 16% 14% Couldn’t care less 7% 10% 4% 1% 6% Unfamiliar 76% 65% 87% 71% 70% Very excited Somewhat excited Not at all excited Couldn’t care less Unfamiliar Windows 8 OS S. With such a significant shift in focus, it will be interesting to see how consumer perceptions towards the brand change as HP hardware gradually disappears from our stores. Mar-11 Sep-11 26 Harris Brand Buzz A focus on… Commentary 20% 16% % ahead of the game Perceptions of Yahoo! as a brand have fallen slightly during this year Yahoo! has found itself struggling in recent times. The dismissal of their CEO and subsequent announcement that the company is up for sale has emphasised this and resultantly seen perceptions of the brand as ahead of the game fall slightly in recent months. Press releases have very much stated Yahoo! are looking to strategically review their business and reposition themselves for future growth.
