B ETHLEHEM, PA — Amy Hollander, the president and CEO of the National Museum of Industrial History welcomed about 50 members and guests for an exclusive preview tour in June. The Smithsonian affiliate museum will open to the public on August 6th during Bethlehem’s 10-day Musikfest celebration. Located in a 100-year-old industrial building that was once the electrical repair shop of Bethlehem Steel, the museum celebrates the history of America’s industrial past and looks ahead to the future. A number of exhibit items were first displayed as the latest in technology during the United States’ 1876 Centennial Exposition, held in Philadelphia, and are on loan from the Smithsonian Museum. The Museum is housed in the renovated and repurposed Bethlehem Steel Electrical Machine Shop. Members pose beneath a life-size mural of steelworkers taking a lunch break high above a city street. The I-beam cast at Bethlehem Steel revolutionized construction, making tall skyscrapers possible. Amy Hollander and others led tours throughout the museum among displays that are still being assembled. Robert Avitabile, the Alvin H. Butz project manager responsible for the transformation of the building, said he had been involved in phases of the construction since 2005. The board of directors of the museum instructed the design and construction team to consider the building itself an CREW LV President Pam Morris introduced the program artifact and to approach construction in a way to highlight the bones of building. Original walls, trusses and building systems are on display. He credited contractors for the pride they took throughout the job, realizing that their work would forever be visible to visitors. Amy noted that all indus- tries are comprised of people, machinery and resources. Great care was taken in the preparation of interactive and stationary displays that have been crafted to tell the local and national story of industries that shaped the country and spurred America’s growth to become a global power.
