Balby Carr Community Academy, a member of the outstanding Wakefield City Academies
Trust (WCAT), is a popular and successful academy, which is committed to meeting the needs
and developing the skills of all students and staff. As part of WCAT we have access to all the
resources that have seen 3 successive Outstanding Judgements from Ofsted for Wakefield City
Academy. The Trust’s aim is to create significant capacity to deliver powerful school to school

Balby Carr offers you a wide variety of courses so you can choose the combination of subjects
that is right for you. We provide an extensive enrichment and visits programme of activities and
events designed to prepare you for the challenges of your course, student life and ultimately the
world of work.
Our aim is to ensure we achieve excellence by putting students first and to enable every student
to achieve success and be happy in terms of achievement, physical and emotional development.
We aim to provide our young adults with new experiences to support them to become confident,
happy and successful participants in the societies in which they will enter after Balby Carr.
We encourage our students to show initiative and enterprise and to play an active role in the life
of the Academy and the community. We are a family and have high expectations of our students
and the adults that will work with you.

There are several options for you to consider at the end of your GCSE studies. As in all good
decision-making, you will research all the realistic options open to you before deciding where to
go and what to do.
LEVEL 3
(Advanced Level)
These are two year courses which are modular. At the end of Year 12 the modules lead to AS
qualifications which can be used as ‘stand alone’ qualifications. However, most students progress
to Year 13 in their advanced courses to complete A2 modules. When combined, AS and A2
modules lead to a full Advanced Level qualification. With the Advanced Level qualifications you
can move on to Higher Education. We recommend that you have achieved at least 6 GCSE passes
at Grade C or above. This should include the recommended entry requirements in the subject
you wish to study, or a similar subject if you have not studied the subject at GCSE. You should
also have achieved a good standard in English and Mathematics (Grade C or above) at GCSE.

(Vocational BTECs)
These are more vocational qualifications that are equivalent in value to A levels. They are assessed
through a portfolio of work and do not include external exams. They are graded Distinction*
to Pass and are equivalent to A Levels at A*-E and are studied over two years. Level 3 BTEC
qualifications attract UCAS points in the same way as A Levels and support progression to a
range of university courses. We recommend that you have achieved at least 6 GCSE passes at
Grade C or equivalent. This should include the recommended entry requirements in the subjects
you wish to study, or a similar subject if you have not studied the subject at GCSE. You should
also have achieved a good standard in English and/or Mathematics (Grade C or above) at GCSE.
We know students progress at different rates and we are always prepared to discuss the right
pathway for each individual. We are a very supportive Sixth Form and we never give up on our
students.
LEVEL 2
(Intermediate Level)
These are vocational courses that you would complete in one year. You would usually need to
have gained some GCSE’s but no specific grades or subjects. You would be working at GCSE
Levels A*– C on these courses. They are suitable for students who have not yet attained 6 or
more A*- C grades at GCSE at the end of year 11. Most people progress to advanced courses
after completing these programmes.
A range of Level 2 and 3 courses are on offer. Specific course details are provided to give you an
idea of what each course entails.

ASDAN Qualification
Students studying this course will use the experiences and skills from their Graduate Programme to
work towards this qualification. It is a very useful qualification which enables you to show evidence
of your skills and responsibilities during your time in the Sixth Form in the form of a portfolio.
The Level 3 qualification is the equivalent to 70 UCAS points (10 marks from a grade C at A2).
General Studies
General Studies is a full A Level qualification, delivered in just one year. It is an inter-disciplinary
subject looking at topics across subject boundaries. Many students choose to study this subject in
Year 13 in order to obtain further qualifications/points and to secure their chosen Post 18 pathway.
National Citizen Service
The National Citizen Service works closely with the Sixth Form to provide our students with the
opportunity to become involved in their rewarding programme. You could be one of thousands
of young people who take part in the National Citizenship Service gaining valuable skills and
experience in leadership, communication and teamwork while performing valuable volunteering
work in the local community.
*Please note that although we anticipate that most courses will run, occasionally if courses are
undersubscribed, we are not able to run them. If this is the case for any course you will be
informed towards the beginning of the Summer Term.

The Graduate Programme:
The Graduate Programme aims to set a broad and challenging goal, enabling you to leave as a well
rounded and educated individual. The qualities, responsibilities and achievements that you can
obtain, will enhance your capacity for employability or selection for Higher Education. It covers

My Sixth Form life at Balby Carr was fairly challenging at first due to the
amount of work which was given to me but I was always ensured that the
teaching staff would support me throughout the two years and they did just
that. With the support of not only my teachers but also my peers, I enjoyed
the two years which I spent there and it also helped me to acquire certain
skills which have helped me to move on to further education.

Social Enterprise Element:
Another element of the graduate programme is social enterprise, this focuses on how you can
use your creativity to give something back. You can choose to organise an activity an event or
create a product that raises money for a charity, commit to regularly working for a charity as a
volunteer or to support a project that raises money for a charity.
In the past students have organised events such as a Christmas disco for Year 7-9 students, a rowa-thon for Children in Need and run charity stalls at our summer or winter fayres and assisted
in Balby Library.

At Balby Academy of Sport we pride ourselves on offering a diverse and varied programme of
study, aimed at developing students both academically and as athletes. If you are considering
a career in the world of sport, then, Balby Academy of Sport is the place for you. We offer a
fantastic range level 3 qualifications alongside individualised training programmes for our athletes,
which lead to a number of exit routes on completion, for example university or scholarship
routes overseas. We are one of the most innovative and fastest growing Academies that offers an
outstanding opportunity for sixth form students to realise their sporting potential, while achieving
an excellent education.
We are nationally recognised by OFSTED and the Youth Sport Trust for our excellent academic
reputation and our amazing sporting achievements. As a result of our continued outstanding
success, students have helped deliver seminars at the Sports College Conference to schools and
colleges across the UK.
The Academy of Sport has grown from having only 9 students in 2007 to having 136 students
studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching & Fitness) alongside
receiving high quality coaching and the chance to represent their academy all over the UK.
With an outstanding record of 100% pass rate, whether students choose to progress into higher
education, undertake a scholarship, or find a career in the sport and leisure industry, choosing
one of our Academy routes may possibly be the best decision a student can make.
Academy students are allocated specialised individual timetables, which incorporate their chosen
Academy’s tasks and duties, as well as their educational studies. The training our students receive
within their chosen Academy will enable them to develop individual technical skills and overall
performance, through our high quality coaches and programmes of study. Students have numerous
opportunities to represent the Academy in National and Regional fixtures and coaching events.

Balby Academy of Sport
All students within the Academy have the option to study either BTEC Sport level 3 Extended
Diploma or As/A level courses that are delivered by fully qualified, committed and innovative
staff.
Alongside academic study, each individual Academy has a dedicated team of highly skilled coaches
and managers that will ensure students receive the best possible opportunities within their
chosen Academy.
The organisation of everything is brilliant, we have our academic
lessons timetabled around our chosen sporting academy which
means we get the best of both worlds. We get to take part in the
sport we love as well as attending high quality lessons. The staff are
really supportive, we really are like one big family.

The BMX Academy
After investing in its own state of the art new
international BMX track, Balby Academy of Sport
is proud to be the country’s first BMX Academy.
The national standard track is regarded as one
of the best in the country and was individually
designed by our resident BMX coach Kelvin Batey.
Students will receive expert BMX coaching from
one of the top BMX riders in the UK.
This academy is attracting interest from all over
the UK and Europe. These students will also complete the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport,
alongside their specialised coaching and race events.
One of our Ex BMX Academy students has gone on to be selected for the Great British BMX
development squad, which is an unbelievable achievement, having only been riding for a few
years.

The Girls Football Academy
The Girl’s Football Academy are continuing to grow in numbers as well as in achievements. The
Girls Football Academy now have a unique partnership with Doncaster Belles, where they play in
a Super League reserves League for the Belles, as well as in the college leagues for Balby Academy
of Sport, which no other college team in the area does. We have a large number of trophies and
an array of titles under our belt, including being in National Cup Finals for the 4 years. We are
looking for students who can contribute to our already outstanding successes.
The academy is growing every year; we now have 26 girls on our programme all studying either
the BTEC Extended Diploma and/or A levels. This Academy offers the highest quality facilities
coaching, and conditioning to help our students reach the best physical condition to deal with
playing in the newly formed British Colleges Elite League which includes Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea,
Lincoln, Birmingham and Filton.
Several of our Girl’s football academy students are currently completing scholarships programmes
overseas, after completing their studies with us. One of our students has also been lucky enough
to be scouted to represent England in the under 19 squad in which she recently played in the
European Cup in Norway. This is an unbelievable achievement, one which we are extremely
proud and supportive of.
The Boys Football Academy
The Boys Football Academy has made great progress and continues to go from strength to
strength, with several outstanding accomplishments already achieved in only their 6th year of
existence. The squad won the ECFA Regional League and the British Colleges Regional League.
They have won the National under 19 Cup as well as the Home International Tournament. They
are also the current holders of the South Yorkshire Cup. The Boys Football Academy also made
it through to the English Colleges Cup final, played at Macclesfield Town FC, beating some of the
best teams in the UK.
Our continued success has ensured that we have had a fantastic uptake of students from all over
South Yorkshire. We have a dedicated team of very highly qualified coaching staff working with
the players to develop their technical and tactical skills, the psychology and emotional aspects
of the game as well as fully supporting their academic studies. We currently have 45 students all
studying the BTEC Extended Diploma as well as additional A levels. We are looking for boys who
have the drive and determination to achieve great things both on and off the football pitch.

The Golf Academy
The Golf Academy is a partnership between Balby Academy of Sport and Retford Golf Club. It
enables young talented Golfers the chance to unlock their potential by developing their Golfing
ability to the highest level. In the Golf Academy, students will receive weekly Golf coaching,
delivered by Craig Morris PGA professional at Retford Golf Club, as well as competitions all
over the UK. Each member of the Golf Academy receives physiological, psychological and
biomechanical support that all top Golfers need to reach their potential. The Golf Academy is
one our most successfully academies, having had some fantastic team and individual achievements
since its birth, including: Doncaster Schools (Waterfront GC), Bassetlaw Schools (Retford GC),
South Yorkshire Schools (Hickleton GC), Schools (Low Laithes GC), English Schools Team
Championships (Woodhall Spa GC), National runners up (count back) after coming equal 1st.
The Sports Medicine Academy
The Sports Medicine Academy is currently in its 3rd year, being introduced in to the Academy
structure from September 2012. This Academy is the first of its kind in Yorkshire and has
developed a partnership with Barnsley Football Club.
The Golf Academy currently has 16 students who are all completing the BTEC Extended Diploma
in Sport or A levels. One of our previous Golfers was selected to represent England in Women’s
Golf, and is now currently studying in America as part of a Golf scholarship programme. Many
of our previous Golf Academy students having progressed to be professional Golfers, which is

The Sports Medicine Academy students also complete the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport as
well as A level Biology if eligible. Built in to their academic timetable are a number of qualifications
related to sports therapy, physiotherapy, sports rehabilitation and sports massage. These students
undertake a 2 year work experience placement, working directly with our very own Sports
Therapist, gaining hands on experience in the treatment and management of athletes and their
injuries. We currently have 7 students within the Sports Medicine Academy, travelling from
all over South Yorkshire to continue their studies and widen their experience in the hope of
gaining a place at University to pursue a career in the sports therapy field. We are looking for
students with the same positive attitude and motivation to succeed in such a demanding and
rewarding Academy. A must for any student aspiring to achieve a career in sports therapy or
physiotherapy.

The Boxing Academy
Balby Academy of Sport has teamed up with the nationally respected Tom Hill Boxing Club to
offer one of the country’s first ever official Boxing Academies. The course is fully supported by
the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) and offers high quality boxing coaching along with top
class educational support. All of the boxing coaches work alongside top ABA senior coaches such
as Tom Gilbert and Ben Stewart.
The course has had a phenomenal uptake of students from all over South Yorkshire, who are
keen and dedicated to improve their boxing skills and techniques and to gain a BTEC qualification.
No previous boxing experience is needed to be part of this Academy, as a full individual tailored
package will be designed regardless of experience. The Boxing Academy is affiliated as its very
own boxing club which is open to the community. This club is extremely successful, currently
preparing several boxers for their first competition as a result the fantastic opportunity to have
our own affiliated boxing club on site, and being able to work with the ABA our Boxing Academy
continues to grow and build on previous successes. Several of our boxers help out during the club
nights as well as assisting in local primary schools and at Disability sporting events.
It doesn’t feel like we are in a regular sixth form, we are like
a big family with lots of ‘parents’ who want the very best for us,
both academically and practically through our chosen sport.
I have experienced so many wonderful opportunities that I know
I just would not get at another college. So far, I have thoroughly
enjoyed my time at Balby Academy of Sport and will really miss
it when it’s time to fly the nest.

16-19 Bursary
The aim of this funding is designed to help
support students who face the greatest
barriers to continuing in post 16 education.
Balby Carr annually receives a sum of money to
distribute to students through this bursary.

The Bursary Fund has 2 elements:
Tier 1: Vulnerability Award:
This group are young people in care or carers, they will be in receipt of income support or
they are disabled young people in receipt of Employment Support Allowance who also receive a
Disability Living Allowance, these students will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year.
The student’s attendance must be 95% or above and they must be making positive progress.
The Coaching and Teaching Academy
Now in its 6th successful year, the Coaching and Teaching Academy continues to develop and
recognise the outstanding young coaches and teachers that we have in and around Doncaster.
The aim of this Academy is to provide aspiring leaders with an exciting and diverse range of
coaching experiences to ensure that every individual goes on to fulfil their potential, whether
it be in sports coaching, teaching, managing or leadership. This Academy is proud to have an
unrivalled reputation throughout Yorkshire; cemented by the students exceptional commitment
and dedication to providing excellent coaching sessions in secondary schools, primary schools,
local community clubs and at local and regional competitions. The Academy is an integral part
of Balby Carr and local primary schools, receiving several prestigious awards for outstanding
commitment.
Students will follow a structured timetable, receiving a minimum of ten hours of coaching time
per week to refine their skills, in addition to attending courses and receiving mentoring from
Academy staff. The Coaching and Teaching Academy is proud to offer a unique opportunity
for students to become exceptional sports leaders and coaches. This unique Academy attracts
students who aspire to be sports coaches or PE teachers of the future, and provides them with
the opportunity to develop skills necessary to thrive in these fields of employment.
Tier 2: Discretionary Award:
We will use our discretion to make awards to students in ways that best fit the needs and
circumstances of our students. This funding will be targeted towards those students who face
financial barriers to participation, such as the costs of transport, opportunities, visits, books and
equipment. Students will be eligible to apply for this if their parents’ total household income is
under £31,000. In addition to this, a student’s attendance must be 95% or above and they must
have a positive progress and behaviour record. Students that fit into Tier 2 will be able to apply
each term.
Academic Support,Target Setting and Reporting
Our philosophy is that each student is an individual and their unique nature is valued and developed.
We have high expectations of all our students and whatever their personal goal our staff at Balby
Carr will help them become the best they can be in their chosen pathway.
It is essential that students are set challenging, individual targets in line with their prior achievements.
Students are carefully monitored by their teachers at all times during their Sixth Form experience
and there will be review points for all our students where they will receive feedback on progress.
Recommendations, action and support will be provided as appropriate during individual reviews.

Sound careers guidance is essential if the goals of our students are to be realised. We therefore
provide careers lessons to support careers development:
All students are assigned to an Academic
Mentor. The Sixth Form Mentors are all
experienced teachers with a commitment to
post 16 Education. There is the opportunity
for daily contact with Mentors who will
oversee your time in the Sixth Form and
deliver a programme of study during Aspire
time.
Help and advice is available whenever you require it. In particular, close contact is maintained
with Mrs Trout, Careers & Work Related Learning Manager, who provides support to students
during the two years in the Sixth Form. Further individual consultations with Sixth Form Mentors
are given on applications to Higher Education and employment.
The College has close links with many universities including Sheffield Hallam and York, and
through the ‘Next Steps’ project delivered by York University, students have the opportunity to
be involved in a range of workshops, activities and residentials that will support their application.
Visits, speakers and conferences are all arranged at various times to give students access to the
detailed information they require. There will be advice on choosing courses, institutions, finance
and general post 18 information. The Sixth Form careers room is well stocked with prospectuses
and all the information you require.
Work Shadowing is encouraged for Lower Sixth A Level students, particularly during holidays.
Mock interviews are available on request to all students, prior to a formal external interview.
Sixth Form Academic Mentors are trained in the UCAS application process. Specialist advice
on Cambridge and Oxford University, Vocational Degrees like Medicine, Law and Engineering,
Physiotherapy and bursaries are made available.
The staff involved are experienced across the whole spectrum of possibilities available to you
after the Sixth Form. Support is particularly focussed at the crucial time when AS and A2 results
are announced.

All students are required to sign a Sixth Form Learner Agreement which focuses on making the
most of their opportunities.
Great care is taken to follow the progress of each individual student. Any problems will initially be
taken up with the student concerned. Parents/guardians will be contacted should the need arise
and they are, of course, always encouraged to contact us should they themselves have cause for
concern.
Initial target setting is reviewed with Mentors throughout Year 12. By September, Year 13
students are ready to write their final personal statements which provide an excellent foundation
for UCAS and job applications.
A formal pastoral programme is also followed by each student as part of their Aspire Programme.
All students benefit from study and team building skills on entry to the Sixth Form, life skills such
as cooking, ironing, financial literacy as well as reading and revision techniques help prepare for
examinations.
Independent Study Facilities
We have extended the study facilities in the Sixth Form, we have a dedicated Sixth Form Learning
Centre and an additional study centre in main school, as well as facilities in the 1966 Suite,
Technology and Business Studies.
Independent study is an essential element within the Sixth Form. It is expected that you will take
responsibility to organise your study time and meet deadlines. Progress will be monitored every
half term, with targets being set to ensure you strive towards your potential.
The School Careers Library is open throughout the school day and may be used by students at all
times. It contains an extensive range of information about careers and higher education. A wide
range of reference books together with University and College prospectuses can be accessed.

Balby Carr Sixth form is brilliant – you learn something new from every
experience. My GCSE grades have enabled me to have the chance to aspire to
be a teacher. The confidence I have gained from hosting the radio station has
helped me be more sociable around the academy in addition to focusing upon my

I have never experienced anything like this before. My friends who have gone to
other sixth forms now wish they had come here! There are so many opportunities
for us to grow and develop into young successful adults, it really is a great place
to be.
The facilities in the Sixth Form Centre are fantastic,
we have access to our own computer suite, which
includes computers, Ipads and laptops. We have our
own café area which provides nutritional snacks and
main meals throughout the day.

The Football Academy have always been really successful, and from a young
age I knew I wanted to be a part of that. The facilities are fantastic and it’s

We pride ourselves at Balby Carr in giving each one of our students individualised, first rate
advice and guidance for their next steps after Sixth Form study. Balby Carr Post 16 students
once again recorded excellent results at A2 in 2014. For the fourth successive year 100% of our
students that applied to university secured a place. However, other students have been successful
in securing a number of vocational progression routes due to the nature of the courses studied
at Post 16.

• Chloe Ewens: received A level results A*AB and is now studying Law at Sheffield University.
• Richard Winter: achieved A level results ABC and is currently studying Economics and Finance
at York University.
• Igor Tyminski: achieved a level results A*ABB has gone on to study Philosophy & Politics at

in BTEC level 3 Sport. Seven of these Academy students have secured scholarships in America
and Canada:

These ranged from the Next Steps York scheme to a
Summer School for Economics in London. They enabled
me to attend Economics workshops throughout my time
at Balby Carr, which assisted in my preparation for my
application to university.

The staff were fantastic and really cared about all of us as

I really enjoyed my time in the Sixth Form mainly because you
can do the courses you want. You can’t expect to do well
when studying A-level’s from attending lessons but if you put

me to feel at home.

Throughout my time at Balby Carr I enjoyed my school life but
the Sixth Form was such an amazing journey for me. I obtained
the support I required from my teachers to get the grades I
needed to get into my chosen university. I did feel as though
we were one big happy family. I was quite sad to leave and I
loved the whole experience.
No other Academy offers the same educational package as
Balby Academy of Sport. I was able to develop my knowledge
and understanding in all areas of Sports Therapy and
rehabilitation which has put me head and shoulders above
other students my age when applying for University. It was an
amazing experience, one that I would recommend to anyone.
