But I soon realized that – with the best of engineering principles and cutting-edge technologies – UCR would provide the best foundation for my future aspirations. And it has indeed. INVALUABLE MENTORSHIP I express my deepest admiration and gratitude to my advisor, Dr. Victor G J Rodgers. Dr. Rodgers’ deep insight to solve biological problems from an engineering perspective provided me the foundation to rationally design solutions. His patience, guidance, and invaluable mentorship, from the start to the end of my Ph.D. program, fostered my success as I juggled research, work, and community service. 19:1 DIVYA SAIN MAJOR BIOENGINEERING FROM VISHAKAPATNAM, INDIA EDUCATION S.N.D.T. WOMEN’S UNIVERSITY A DIVERSE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY I have been fortunate to perform cutting-edge research in cross-disciplinary fields ranging from vascular hemodynamics to engineering and materials science. The results of these research topics have culminated in high impact publications. I am proud to be part of such a diverse scientific community. BEYOND ACADEMICS In my first year at UCR, I was a part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s initiative, WIRED. I went to many famous companies and firms in Southern California and interviewed the top officials to understand how science, technology and business can work hand-in-hand. STUDY IN SUNNY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WHAT UC RIVERSIDE HAS TAUGHT ME I chose UCR because of the Department of Bioengineering and the interdisciplinary research opportunity here. Of course, college rankings are something international students first refer to, but I also liked that the university is in Southern California -- with perfect weather throughout the year! UCR has taught me so much more through the small things we do every day. UCR made me push my abilities to the maximum. It made me stronger, made me realize what I want, gave me new friends and contacts, and showed me what it means to go global for a traditional Indian girl. - Sandeep Dhall, Orissa, India - Bioengineering - Akhila Jyothy Denduluri, Andhra Pradesh, India Bioengineering STUDENT TO FACULTY RATIO Work closely with an award-winning faculty! UC Riverside professors rank 6 th in the nation for the most significant awards and recognition. (Washington Monthly, 2014) go.ucr.edu/network MAJOR GENOMICS AND BIOINFORMATICS FROM NEW DELHI, INDIA EDUCATION UTTAR PRADESH TECHNICAL UNIV. PRESTIGIOUS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AWARD AN INTERDISCIPLINARY DOCTORATE I was chosen as a recipient for the Guru Gobind Singh Fellowship award – a $30,000 award that is given every year to one student (in any field of research) among all the UC campuses. The Chancellor, the Graduate Dean, and the UCR trustees gathered at the Chancellor’s residence and lauded us for our efforts. I decided to attend UCR because of the interdisciplinary doctorate program offered by the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS). With its various centers like the Center for Plant Cell Biology and Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, CNAS boasts many pioneers in the field of Botany and Life Sciences. NEVER AN OUTSIDER AN ACTIVE LIFE UCR is a school that welcomes students from all backgrounds. I see people who are eager to learn about Indian culture and are equally excited to introduce their own culture to me. I believe being exposed to an ethnically and culturally diverse environment broadens your mindset and makes you a better human being. I have been involved in community service ever since my high school years with the Rotaract Club and continue to do the same here at UCR. In addition I am a volunteer at the Art of Living Foundation, which promotes better living through yoga and meditation. 98 % OF FACULTY WITH PH.D. OR EQUIVALENT
