Bibliography Introduction Fire Extinguisher: A portable device that discharges a jet of water, foam, gas, or other material to put out a fire Fire Extinguishers provide a fast and easy way of dealing with a small fire in emergencies. Simple Machines: A basic mechanical advice for applying force (Like inclined planes, pulleys and wheel and axles) History ● 1723 (Ambrose Godfrey) - The first fire extinguisher was patented ● 1818 (William Manby) - The modern version of the fire extinguisher was invented ● 1866 (Francois Carlier) - Invented a fire extinguisher with a cylindrical container with a mixture of water and bicarbonate soda and another container with sulfuric acid. When mixed together, the mixture bubbles and forces the water out. ● 1912 - The carbon tetrachloride (CTC) extinguisher was invented (used in automobiles). ● 1923 (Kornel Szilvay) - Patented and invented the first soda-acid fire extinguisher ● 1940s (Germany) - Invented the liquid chlorobromomethane (CBM) extinguisher for aircrafts, however, was only used up to the 1970s. They are used in Academic settings, Hotels/Motels, and the Environment ● Fire extinguishers are used 15,000 times each year in schools, colleges, and dormitories. ● About 3,900 fires occur each year in hotels and motels. These damages result in $76 million in property loss ● They are important in protecting the environment by controlling fires at very early stages Fire Extinguishers provide many benefits in avoiding issues that can result from fires. Usage ● A fire extinguisher works like a spray can. ● Excludes oxygen so that combustion can no longer continue. ● Has to extinguish the whole fire as soon as possible, so it produces a powerful spray of water/foam/powder to do so. Some might produce carbon dioxide, a heavy gas that prevents burning. ● The extinguishing substance, like water for example, is put under high pressure inside the extinguisher, and the pressure forces the substance (or the water) out of the nozzle. How it Works: 1. The Handle, or Discharge Lever, is pressed. 2. The Valve in the Extinguisher opens. The release valve admits the gas inside the bottle to the space above the water. 3. The Gas Escapes. The gas then pushes down on the water, which is driven up the Siphon Tube to a hose connected to the nozzle. 4. The water (or foam) comes out of the Nozzle and extinguishes the Fire.
