First Friday is always a great time in
Multnomah Village, but this May 2,
two great events are going to be worth
checking out. The MAC Youth Arts
Show from 5-7pm will be a great family
event (pages 3 & 20). Then for the
grown-ups we are having a storytelling event Truth Be Told
(page 21). We hope you’ll join us!
Thanks to grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council
and the Oregon Arts Commission, we are developing final
design and business plans for the Arts Cottages. This summer
we’ll begin developing MAC’s woodworking cottage with
support from four local woodworking/turning/carving groups.
And we’ve welcomed Print Arts Northwest as our newest
tenant. More to come in the fall!

Family Classes
Family classes are designed for parents, guardians and children to interact and participate together. Our philosophy is to
honor the child’s creative impulses—focusing on process, rather than product. Visual art classes provide instruction in the use
of art materials and techniques, encouraging each child’s individual style of visual expression. We recommend both adult and child
wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Clean-up is part of all MAC Youth Art classes.

simply give your grandchildren (or parents!) the stories they should know, this is
the class for you. Mix techniques from the literary and storytelling traditions to
find a true story, share it with others in person, and get it down on paper.

upheaval, grief, stress or transition, writing can be a vehicle for change while it
also becomes art, something separate from us, touching and assisting others in the
process. Whether you have written all your life or never written before, you can
transform difficult life struggles into wonderful stories, poems, creative vignettes
or memoir.

Creating Velocity Ages 18 & Up
Imagine sitting at the airport on the hood of your car, watching a plane take
off and feeling the fast and faster moving air against your cheek, hair, and eyes.
That’s velocity, and fine pieces of prose and poetry can create this same effect.

while observing the physics of it as well. All genres. Some experience recommended.

A carefully placed intimate detail, shift of verbal tense, or a different point of view can

your rewriting. Watch how strong, particular choices can strengthen any writing, and
bring these techniques back to your own work. For prose writers.

“We see achievement as purposeful and monolithic, like the sculpting of a massive tree
trunk that has first to be brought from the forest and then shaped by long labor to assert the artist’s
vision, rather than something crafted from odds and ends, like a patchwork quilt, and lovingly
used to warm different nights and bodies.” —Mary Catherine Bateson

Inclusion Services for People
with Special Needs
Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of
1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP & R) provides
accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs,
so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in
programs offered citywide.
How it Works
1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and
then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.
2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a
PP&R site, or online at www.PortlandParks.org. When
registering, let the person know that you will need
accommodations in order to participate in the activity
(online, check the box.)
3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at
503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through
Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with
a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be
determined whether an assistant will be needed on the
first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future
assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion
staff will work with the instructor on how to support you
and your individual needs.
Important Details
A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and
services, but the basic structure of the program remains
the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be
flexible and creative. Participants need to register for activities
that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided
for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through
age 12.
If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call
503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days
(Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion
Services staff will do their best to accommodate each
participant.
