2014 Annual Report - NJTL of Indianapolis
2014 Annual Report Learn to Play, Play to Learn MISSION NJTL of Indianapolis seeks to develop the character of young people from all backgrounds through tennis, life skills, educational enrichment, and healthy living choices. VISION Through the game of tennis, young people are educated and empowered to become successful citizens their entire lives. VALUES NJTL of Indianapolis programs support our core values including: Honesty and integrity Sportsmanship Teamwork Healthy lifestyles Reading and education Family involvement Volunteers, partners and community MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The last year has been tremendously exciting for me personally and for all of us who are committed to the important work of NJTL of Indianapolis. I am honored to be a part of this remarkable organization and have been privileged to see first-hand the impact it has had on enhancing the lives of youth through the powerful combination of tennis, life skills, educational enrichment and healthy living choices. Thanks to your generosity, NJTL of Indianapolis has influenced over 50,000 Indianapolis youth since our inception in 1973. We’re making an impact and we’re empowering these youth to become successful citizens their entire lives. In 2014, we supported more than 1,000 children, and 46% of our Summer Program participants received a partial or full scholarship. Because of our generous donors, we are able to provide financial assistance to anyone in need. This year we were able to bring back Friday Match Days and participant t-shirts, as well as increase the number of participants in our Jack Bradshaw Program and expand our fundraising strategy. Our significant accomplishments this year were made possible by the leadership and generous support of our Board members, together with the hard work and enduring commitment of our staff. Thank you for your collaboration in our important work. NJTL of Indianapolis is committed to continuing this work so that more kids have the chance to succeed on the court, in the classroom and in life. Sincerely, Alli Stitle SAVE THE DATES April 18, 2015 - Glow Tennis May 17, 2015 - Walking for Dreams May 22, 2015 - Carb Night Burger Bash June 19, 2015 - Rally Day November 14, 2015 - Night at the Net NIGHT AT THE NET On October 11, 2014, NJTL of Indianapolis held its annual gala, Night at the Net, at The Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. The FUN was taken to a new level in 2014, with the FUNdraiser featuring food stations, a DJ and a table tennis tournament. Congrats to Barth Raman for winning the inaugural tournament and to B.J. Brinkerhoff for placing second. George DeVoe and NJTL’s Board President Jake Bradley presented the inaugural NJTL of Indianapolis Chuck DeVoe Award to Steve Mackell, Program Director. This award acknowledges those individuals with a record of excellence and unique service to NJTL of Indianapolis. The award is presented to a volunteer, instructor, staff member, or player who exhibits wholehearted commitment and devotion to NJTL of Indianapolis over a significant period of time. The award is given both to reward those accomplishments and to inspire others to similar service. 964 Indianapolis youth participated in the 6-week summer program at 11 public parks and school locations in Marion County. 370 youth participated in the fall and winter sessions. Besides plenty of food and beverage, those attending enjoyed a silent auction showcasing a wide range of items that included dining, jewelry, hotel packages, and area attractions. The live auction featured a Pacer’s jersey signed by David West, a high speed IndyCar 2-seater ride at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and a one-week stay in a Florida condo. Night at the Net raised over $20,000 for NJTL of Indianapolis. WALKING FOR DREAMS For the past seven years, NJTL has organized a team to participate in Walking for Dreams on the Downtown Canal. The event continues to grow and we hope that 2015 is the most successful year yet. On May 18th, a total of 23 walkers raised $5,020. These dollars help keep program costs low so that we are able to make a positive impact on youth of all backgrounds within Central Indiana. Mark your calendar to join us on Sunday, May 17, 2015! WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN On August 14, 2014, NJTL of Indianapolis hosted a VIP Experience for the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised over $4,500. Guests enjoyed a boxed meal and complimentary beverages on the coach bus. The tournament experience included excellent seats in the loge section on Center Court and a private air-conditioned hospitality tent. The event was made possible by Tag Birge and Andrew Held, with additional support provided by Ludo Aaron, Ron Mencias of The Payne & Mencias Group at Merrill Lynch, Drew Hamilton of BlackRock and David Symmes of Crown Liquors. Stay tuned for details for the 2015 experience...you won’t want to miss the excitement! INDIANA FEVER Several NJTL participants stood alongside WNBA Indiana Fever players on July 12, 2014, during the pregame national anthem. NJTL of Indianapolis was introduced as part of the pregame show to build community awareness. Carb Night Burger Bash NJTL of Indianapolis received $3,462 from proceeds from Curt Cavin’s Carb Night Burger Bash at 96th Street Steakburgers on May 23, 2014. Thank you, Curt Cavin and 96th Street Steakburgers! NJTL LIFE SKILLS instruction helps children learn specific skills and valuable life lessons. Some important skills that are taught include being a team player and dealing with peer pressure. Children were asked to take a pre- and post-test this summer to show the effectiveness of the curriculum. TOURNAMENTS were held at the end of the summer for NJTL participants of all ability levels. 181 children participated. Winners were recognized and given a medal for their achievement. 5-2-1-0 Countdown to Health In partnership with WFYI Public Media, we utilized the “5-2-1-0 Countdown to Health” wellness program for the first time in 2014. This initiative encourages children to make simple, everyday choices that establish good habits in nutrition and fitness - key components for a lifetime of good health. 16TH ANNUAL NATIONAL ARTHUR ASHE ESSAY CONTEST was a large part of our summer program. Participants were asked to answer the question, “Arthur Ashe used his time and skills to impact others - how have you used your time and skills learned through tennis and educational programming to impact the lives of those around you?” 60 NJTL of Indianapolis participants submitted essays. NJTL of Indianapolis congratulates its USTA/Midwest Section winner (of a possible 10), Gabby Blamey! LOVE TO READ promotes co-founder Arthur Ashe’s idea, “For every hour spent on the playing field, two should be spent with a book.” 87 children participated in NJTL’s summer reading contest, completing an amazing 107,190 pages. 116 children received a book donated by The Children’s Museum Guild at Rally Day. 5-2-1-0 Countdown to Health uses the following model: “5” - Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. “2” - Aim for recreational screen time of 2 hours or less each day. “1” - Get 1 hour or more of physical activity a day. “0” - Drink 0 sugary beverages (more water/lowfat milk).
