Not a cloud in the sky. About 2:00 in the afternoon. We were arriving to the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Richmond, Indiana. There were dogs everywhere. They were jumping off docks into a pool, pulling carts full of blocks, bounding over jumps and scurrying up “A” frames…and there was one running wild through a field. Yes, running wild! traded for a mechanical one that runs on a rail, in an oval track. This was where the modern day racing of Greyhounds and Whippets began. This provided a great way to witness the speed of these dogs, but it removed the agility needed for spectacular turns the dogs do when chasing live prey. We owe the modern day lure coursing to a California man by the name of Lyle Gillette. In As we rolled the early into the 1970’s he fairgrounds devised the t h a t p o r t a b l e afternoon, we pulley system saw what used today. appeared to All he used be a shepherd was a white running loose bag, a few in a field. pulleys, string, Odd thing From Left to Right: was no one Shannon Coleman with Ryder, Wayne Cavanaugh – the head and a small engine. For the past several years lure coursing Coursing is an ancient sport, one for meets have been held by the American royalty and sighthounds dating back to Sighthound Field Association (ASFA), the 4000 B.C. In more recent times, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the 1800’s, dogs were used for hunting by United Kennel Club (UKC); but the being set loose in a field where they events were still only for sighthounds. would flush out rabbits and other small That is until May 2010 when the UKC animals. In the 1920’s the live hare was introduced a coursing title for all breeds – the Coursing Aptitude Test (CA). To earn the UKC’s CA title any breed of dog must run and pass 3 different courses, at 3 different meets, under 2 different judges. The courses are the same courses the sighthounds use. In order to pass the course the dog must complete the run with passion and without disruption. We got several strange looks as we ventured out into the field to the starting area. We really didn’t know what to expect, I mean the courses are on average between 500 and 1000 yards long -can a Toy Poodle run that far? No sooner did the Huntmaster say “Tally -Ho” than our poodle shot out like a rocket! While he was running the course I was holding the other poodle and she was screaming to get at the lure…she was an addict before she ever started! When the boy returned and pounced on the lure growling and tugging at it, the Huntmaster walked over and handed us our first lure coursing blue ribbon. We passed! Two more times and we will have CA titles. We are happy to report that both of our poodles made history that weekend. They both had 3 qualifying runs, at 3 meets, under 2 judges and earned their CA titles. They are the first toy breed and the first poodles, of any size, to earn the CA title. Our next step is the CAX title (Coursing Aptitude Excellent). Once you earn the CA title you can immediately start working toward your CAX. The CAX title requires 12 more passes. CA GRCH Rochar N’ Argenta’s Viper AKA Wave Ryder Owned by Balynda Brown and Shannon Coleman Photo taken by Richard Hunter for Hunter’s Run Action Photography At each meet the course is laid out and run by at least 3 people – the judge, the Huntmaster, and the lure operator. You will find the judge on a ladder in the field which gives the best view of the entire course. The Huntmaster stands at the beginning of the course, near where each participant will release their dog. He starts each course with the call “Tally-Ho!” Participants are not allowed to release their dog until the call has been made. The lure operator runs the lure on the course. He/she must keep the lure in front of the dog and at a good speed and distance from the dog to keep them focused on the lure. Flashback: We are back in the hot sun, in the field, in Richmond, Indiana. The dog we saw running was a shepherd. There were Cane Corso’s and Jack Russell’s and American Hairless Terriers and Berger Picards and Rat Terriers and Standard Poodles and … you get the picture. They were all there to try lure coursing! So I look over at my friend and say, “We ought to try it…” Yes, we do own terriers but that is not the breed we wanted to try, after all terriers would take right to it. We wanted to try our 2 silver Toy Poodles…..yes Toy Poodles. Page 2 From the President’s Pen By Eleni Stevens Premier has come and gone – and not a single brag on our Yahoo group! I hope they will all be in the newsletter. Anybody have any ideas that could make our Yahoo group a little more active and maybe more useful to our members? Anything you would like to see UPBA doing that is not getting done? What do you expect from your club? Are we measuring up? Comments and/or suggestions could be posted on the list, directed to individual board members or we can possibly set up a poll with some alternatives and ask everybody to vote. much benefit to all of us and our judges. We’ve received a suggestion that we use some drawings for our primary illustrations and then use a few real life pictures for “backup”. This might make things a lot easier. I have a lot of difficulty getting good pictures of whole dogs, not to mention specific parts! Gloria has a line on somebody who might do this for us and will let us know what she finds out. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. We have two great UPBA events coming up – obedience, rallyo, and our annual specialty. Please refer to pages 11 -12 for the flyers.
