A Message from Ken and Lisa Marks
Co-founders of the Hannibal History Museum
We welcome you to the second annual Big River Steampunk Festival!
When we first began to envision a new history museum celebrating Hannibal’s remarkable 200-year history in 2010, we
could never have imagined the enthusiasm and support we
would receive from both local Hannibalians and from guests
all around the world. Putting together the museum has
been a labor of love, not only for us, but for the hundreds
of volunteers who have donated countless hours to help us
bring our vision to fruition.
The same now holds true for the Big River Steampunk
Festival. We made the mistake of mentioning to other
downtown merchants the idea of a new festival held over
Labor Day weekend and how we thought Steampunk might
be a good fit for downtown Hannibal; they immediately
encouraged us to launch the new event and set us on this
amazing journey…just eighteen months ago! In that time,
we have reached tens of thousands of people on social media, attracted hundreds of volunteers and enthusiasts who
wish to help, and added an unbelievably big project to our
already bourgeoning personal schedule.
We love Steampunk – its blend of history, science and art,
the way it brings people from all socioeconomic groups, all
age groups, all areas around the world together for shared
merriment. But more importantly, we are excited to celebrate the history of Hannibal, Missouri as a major center of
commerce during the Industrial Revolution, an overachieving
small town that became wealthy and prosperous and was the
epitome of The Gilded Age of America. Mark Twain, the
patron saint of Hannibal, was friends with Tesla and Edison
and loved inventors and tinkerers, even had his own creations patented…Hannibal is the embodiment of all that is
considered Steampunk.
Thank you for being a part of our dream – we hope you
enjoy the Festival!

AN OVERVIEW
Welcome to the 2015 Big River Steampunk Festival! This festival has been
produced by the board and staff of the Hannibal History Museum Foundation, a federally-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, as a benefit to
sustain the Hannibal History Museum. It’s also a great way to celebrate the
history of Hannibal, Missouri, a town that became a main hub of commerce
during the Industrial Revolution and was the epitome of The Gilded Age, a
term coined by none other than Hannibal’s own Mark Twain!
The Big River Steampunk Festival has three main areas of activity:
Main Street: Free entertainment will be provided throughout the weekend
on the Main Street Stage, located at the northeast corner of Main and Bird
Streets. This is where the Costume Contests will be held daily at Noon. You
will find great food and beverages here, plus you may purchase tickets and
ask questions at the Big River Ticket and Information Booth located in this
area. On Main Street, enjoy Nerf Dueling, Tea Dueling, Ballroom Dancing,
and the Cake Walk Promenade. Be sure to visit the Creative Exchange at
205 N. Main Street where tinkerers may engage in Make-N-Takes and
creative Steampunk seminars and workshops.
The Great Midway: Located in Kiwanis Park on the riverfront, here you
will find vendors from around the country selling their Steampunk wares.
Free entertainment is provided throughout the day on The Great Midway
Stage. Food and beverages are served here, and you may also purchase tickets and ask questions at the Big River Ticket and Information Booth.
Exposition Circle: The circular layout of Nipper Park is where you will find
the Victorian Oddities and Divination Tent, the Big River Circus Sideshow,
the Mad Scientist’s Imaginarium and the Big River Airship Village as well as
great food and beverages. This will also be the setting for the launching of
the Hot Air Balloon Rides, Croquet Tournament and Picnic Basket Auction.
There are several other “off-site” locations for events such as the Time
Traveler’s Ball and Tea with Queen Victoria, please see the Map and Schedule of Events for more information.
While a majority of the events at the Big River Steampunk Festival are
free, there are various Premium Events that do require you to purchase a
ticket for admission. Please see the “Schedule of Events” for more information.
And finally, be sure to frequent the wonderful shops, restaurants, watering
holes and museums in historic downtown Hannibal – many have sponsored
the Big River Steampunk Festival and all will be open throughout the
Festival weekend. Please thank them for their support!
Please direct any questions you may have to the Big River Ticket and
Information Booths located at Main Street and The Great Midway in
Kiwanis Park.

Meet Robert Snow, Author, "Looking for
Carroll Beckwith"
at the mark twain museum, 120 north main
Doors open at 6:00pm, Discussion at 6:30pm (1 hour)
$15.00 per person (includes nibbles & beverages)
James Carroll Beckwith, born in Hannibal, Missouri on September 23,
1852, was an American landscape, portrait and genre painter whose
Impressionist style led to his recognition in the late nineteenth
century as a prominent figure in American art. Robert L. Snow,
Commander of the Homicide Branch for the Indianapolis Police
Department (now retired) never told his fellow officers that, under
hypnosis, a clinical psychologist regressed him to a vivid past life.
How could he tell them that he, a leading Indiana detective, once
lived as nineteenth century artist Carroll Beckwith? After two years
of painstaking investigation, Detective Snow now believes that he has
uncovered evidence that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that
reincarnation is possible -- something no one else has been able to
accomplish before him. Hear Detective Snow's amazing story at the
Mark Twain Museum Gallery, 120 North Main Street -- copies of his
book, “Looking for Carroll Beckwith”, may be purchased and autographed during this special event.

after your fellow duelist. The

Cake Walk Promenade
On Main Street
Saturday and Sunday at 4:00pm
The origins of the Cake Walk are thought to have been developed
on plantations in the South during Sunday afternoon get-togethers. Mimicking those in the "Big House", dancers would prance and
promenade in comic fashion in a "chalkline walk" or "walk around"
to entertain one another, with the prize of a delicious cake being
given to one lucky couple. The "walk" eventually made its way into
pop culture and became wildly popular, particularly at the same time
that Ragtime music gained in popularity toward the turn of the 20th
century. A revival of this Victorian artform will be presented on
Hannibal's historic Main Street at the Big River Steampunk Festival
-- practice your moves and strut your stuff, you might just "Take
the Cake"!
