A bus pass for an elderly gentleman to receive life-sustaining dialysis treatments. No matter the need, Consumers Energy’s PeopleCare program continues to provide critical interventions for families throughout Michigan. Last year, nearly 10,000 families were served through PeopleCare, which is administered by the Salvation Army in Michigan. As many Michigan families struggle to make ends meet, Consumers Energy and the Salvation Army are asking those with resources to “Please lend a hand to those in need” through the PeopleCare program. That appeal is featured in the utility’s Newsline being received this month by 2.9 million customers. Consumers Energy and the Salvation Army created PeopleCare to provide help to individuals and families. PeopleCare helps families throughout Michigan, providing food, shelter, clothing, and emergency aid. The Salvation Army determines eligibility for energy bill credits and other help and distributes the aid. Consumers Energy customers and employees contributed more than $870,000 for PeopleCare in 2009. In addition, Consumers Energy provided $1.5 million in energy bill credits last year. The utility is also providing $1.5 million in bill credits in 2010. Consumers Energy customers can support PeopleCare’s work of helping families and individuals by a variety of payment methods. Customers may donate $3 a month or make a one-time donation of $5 by checking one of the boxes at the top of their July bill. If they’d like to contribute a different amount, they can fill out the form in Newsline and return it with the special PeopleCare envelope enclosed with their July bill. Donations also may be made online at www.usc. salvationarmy.org/peoplecare. Other contributions may be sent to PeopleCare, Consumers Energy, Lansing, MI 48937-0001. Since it was established in 1983, PeopleCare has helped 380,000 households in Michigan. Consumers Energy employees and customers have donated nearly $14.5 million to support PeopleCare and the utility has contributed $28.4 million in energy bill credits for total support of $42.9 million. Prescription drug savings card available (Submitted by United Way of the Lakeshore) A partnership between United Way of the Lakeshore and FamilWize has resulted in prescription drug savings of more than $114,829 for residents of Muskegon, Oceana and Newaygo counties. More than $105,300 of that savings is in Muskegon County. The savings totals are through May, 2010. The free FamilyWize drug discount card is distributed by United Way of the Lakeshore. The FamilyWize card lowers the cost of medicine by an average of 30 percent or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. The card acts as a coupon that can be used every time a prescription is filled. Residents simply present a FamilyWize card at a local pharmacy to get the savings. “No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent, or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions,” said Christine Robere, president of United Way of the Lakeshore. “That’s why we’ve partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription discount cards to everyone in the Lakeshore area.” “The FamilyWize card provides immediate savings on prescription medicines with no paperwork or forms to fill out,” said Suzanne Press, coordinator of the Muskegon County Emergency Needs Committee. The cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance. They can even be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare. The card is free, with unlimited use, and is accepted at 95 percent of pharmacies nationwide. No enrollment or personal information is needed. Nearly 1,000 United Ways in all 50 states have helped to save more than $100 million on prescriptions in their communities. FamilyWize cards can be found locally at many pharmacies, including K-Mart and Wal-Mart. For more information, or to get a card, call United Way of the Lakeshore at 1-877-722-31234. People with internet access can go to www. unitedwaylakeshore.org or to www.FamilyWize.org to print a card, look up drug prices and obtain a list of participating pharmacies.• Page 8 • July 2010 • Fruitport Area News
