BorgWarner BERU Systems is one of the leading
global manufacturers of Diesel cold starting technology and ignition technology for the automotive
industry. Furthermore, the company provides
Auxiliary Heater and sensor solutions for enhanced
comfort and safety in numerous engine and vehicle
applications – e.g. sensors for applications in engines as well as in the drive chain and exhaust-gas
lines. We are guided by over 100 years of technological experience and our will to innovate. The
integration of electronics strengthens our position
as a technology leader.
Our modern technologies are instrumental in lowering
fuel consumption, reducing emissions and impro-
ving performance. We have placed great value on
active environmental protection during production
for many years (since 1999, we have an environmental management system certified to ISO 14001).
Of course all our products comply with the high
standards of quality that you can expect from us.
BorgWarner BERU Systems GmbH is a business
unit of BorgWarner Inc. (NYSE: BWA). BorgWarner,
based in in Auburn Hills, Michigan, is a global technology leader in the field of high-tech components
and systems for the powertrain. The company
operates manufacturing and technical facilities at
57 locations in 19 countries.

Product Divisions
Each of our divisions steadily pursues the goal of
attaining and maintaining globally leading positions.
Diesel Cold Start Technology
Ignition Technology
BorgWarner BERU Systems in its core-business
sector is one of the globally leading manufacturers of
Glow Plugs and Diesel Cold Start Systems and
counts almost all automotive and engine manufacturers
across the globe to its customers. One example
illustrates our innovative capability: the Pressure
Sensor Glow Plug PSG. BERU Systems is the first
and only manufacturer delivering this completely new
glow plug technology for series vehicles, and the
technology is being installed in more and more
vehicles. The sensor integrated in the heating rod of
the glow plug measures the pressure in the combustion chamber and reports this to the engine control
electronics. The optimized combustion ensures a
lower level of emissions. The Pressure Sensor Glow
Plug has already won numerous innovation awards.
BorgWarner BERU Systems is also one of Europe´s
four leading suppliers in the field of ignition technology
for gasoline engines.
The ignition coil range covers every technology from block ignition coils and distributor coils through
to the latest plug shaft ignition coils and connector
ignition coils. The latest development from the BERU
systems engineers is an ignition system in which
each spark plug has not just one but two ignition
coils, each working alternately. This doubles the
number of charges and thus also the number of
ignition sparks, while ignition delay is correspondingly
reduced. If necessary a single spark can be extended
to any length without dropout. Another product for
the future is Ecoflash, the high frequency ignition
system. Compared to conventional systems this
patented technology generates an extended corona
discharge inside the combustion chamber - which
means that even very lean fuel mixes will ignite
reliably.

As a development partner in the automotive industry, the company is ideally positioned in the auxiliary
heater sector. Our product portfolio includes solutions
for all vehicle types including electrical and hybrid
vehicles. The most important product the PTC Auxiliary Heaters (Positive Temperature Coefficient).
The high voltage PTC auxiliary interior heater makes
this possible even on electric and hybrid vehicles.
The wide range of BERU products also includes a
multitude of sensors.

Research & Development
The greatest challenge facing the automotive industry is a significant reduction of fuel
consumption and of the associated CO2 emissions. Solving this task requires a holistic
approach. BERU Systems as the technology leader in the sector has the declared aim
of playing a significant role in achieving this objective with its products. The employees
in Research & Development are working on innovative solutions for future mobility.

Less Emissions
The BERU Systems high-temperature sensor (HTS) with platinum
shunt resistor is distinguished by a short response time and high
mechanical stability, operates within a measurement range from
-40 to 1,000°C and can be fitted in almost any installation position
thanks to the closed design – at insertion depths from 25 to 70 mm
and bending angle from 0 to 120°.
BERU Systems makes diesel clean: Our technologies optimize combustion and thereby reduce emissions. The innovative Pressure Sensor
Glow Plug (PSG) instantly detects the pressure in the combustion
chamber. The Instant Start System (ISS) regulates the glow time and
voltage of every glow plug separately – ensuring a dependable, rapid
start and a continuously optimized combustion process. World class
BERU reliability included. For more information, please contact

Ignition Technology:
High-Frequency Ignition “Ecoflash”
Unlike traditional engine ignition systems that rely
on heat to initiate combustion, the patented highfrequency ignition technology generates a highenergy electrostatic field inside the combustion
chamber. That greatly improves combustion efficiency
and speed and consistently ignites the leanest air-fuel
6
mixtures. Furthermore, the system electronically
controls various characteristics of the combustion
cycle, further reducing emissions, improving efficiency
and increasing engine power. Thus High-Frequency
Ignition has the potential to revolutionize ignition
technology. BERU Systems uses the industrialization
of this technology to enhance its competence in
ignition technology and allow it to assume a position
of global leadership. BERU Systems ignition experts
assume that the high-frequency ignition system will
be ready for mass production within a few years.
Diesel Cold Start Technology:
Innovations for a New Combustion Process
The BERU Pressure Sensor Glow Plug (PSG) has
been installed for many years as standard in many
vehicle models. Emissions can be reduced by direct
control of the combustion process, which also contributes to compliance with future limits set for particles
and NOX . A Ceramic Glow Plug also developed by
BERU Systems has also been put into series production. They operate reliably under high loads, reach
the required temperatures even more quickly through
external heaters and achieve maximum temperatures
of 1,250 °C. In this way, fuel-saving functions such
as the automatic start/stop feature are optimally
supported. The engine demonstrates an improved
starting behaviour, and the level of emissions is
reduced.
Auxiliary Heater and Sensors
Environment and Safety
One characteristic for hybrid vehicles, and particularly
for electrical vehicles, is the low level of emitted heat
– and at lower temperatures it is often insufficient to
heat the vehicle interior and to de-ice the wind shield.
In order to reduce the safety risk and to provide a
pleasant temperature for the vehicle occupants,
BERU Systems has developed a new PTC generation:
the High-Voltage-PTC Auxiliary Heater with
electronic control in co-operation with a large
German car manufacturer.
It is installed instead of the water heat exchanger
and the conventional PTC Auxiliary Heater and
connected to the high-voltage vehicle electrical
system. It has a heat output of 3,000 watt. The
high-voltage connection posed a particular challenge
during development. The solution from BERU
Systems: special HV-PTC elements in conjunction
with the newly developed electronics.
