Clark Street Suite 750 Chicago, IL 60602 Phone: 312.263.3049 Fax: 312.263.6120 www.jaschicago.org JASC-12007_2012AnnualReport_111512.indd 1-2 11/19/12 1:25 PM Our mission is to create and promote Japanese and American friendships. We do this through business, social, educational and cultural activities. We are the only organization in Chicago that touches all of these areas in American and Japanese relationships. The Japan America Society of Chicago is a nonprofit association made up of individuals and corporations interested in United States-Japan business, cultural, political and social relations. Founded in 1930 to foster mutual goodwill and friendship between the people of Japan and the United States, the Society enjoys a total membership of over 150 American and Japanese corporations and over 600 individuals throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Society sponsors over 50 public affairs and cultural programs annually, including business luncheons, evening lectures, cultural events and social/networking opportunities. All members receive discounts on program registration and invitations to special member-only events. The Society also has a Young Professionals Committee that organizes various evening lectures and social outings throughout the year for members in their twenties and thirties. In addition, the Society offers more than six levels of Japanese and English language courses. For membership information and other inquiries, visit www.jaschicago.org or contact the Society office. I will leave Chicago shortly for a new assignment in Tokyo. While the responsibilities of my new post are quite exciting, I will miss Chicago and my many friends at the Japan America Society of Chicago. When I arrived here last October, I was deeply touched by the very warm welcome from the Society. This city felt like home, thanks to your friendship. My stay here has been much too short, but I am delighted that so much has been achieved for Japan in Chicago. With your advice and support, I was able to carry out my work. You have my sincerest appreciation. It has been a tremendous pleasure to work closely with all of you. The Society plays a most important role bringing Japan and Chicago together. I am deeply impressed that it promotes such a strong network of people who are involved in business and cultural exchange between Japan and the U.S. I know the Society will continue to achieve great success in the years to come. I wish to thank the Honorable Michael Moskow, Chairman of the JASC, Senator Adllai Stevenson, Chairman Emeritus, President J.D. Bindenagel, former President Edward Grant, Executive Vice President Robert Karr, Executive Director Mitsukuni Baba, as well as the officers and members, for your dedication and friendship. F R O M T H E C H A I R M A N This past year, our 81st anniversary year, was another year of progress for the Society. And while we recognize the many challenges in the economy, we are cautiously optimistic for this coming year. Our programs enjoyed another excellent year. With more than 40 programs and events covering business, public affairs, culture, education and the social side, our members engaged us in a most robust fashion. From Ambassador Rust M. Deming on the impact of March 11 on U.S.-Japan relations and the challenges ahead, to Masaaki Kanno discussing forecasts for the economies of Japan and the United States in 2013, to our always popular Annual Sake Tasting, we strived to further our mission of friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. I was also quite pleased by our continued membership growth, adding companies such as Nippon Sharyo USA, Inc., Baker & McKenzie LLP and PNC Bank, among many other wonderful companies and individuals. We are here to serve the public and our members as they are our lifeblood. I thank all our members, new and continuing, corporate and individual, for your support. Kaoriko and I will always cherish our time in Chicago, and our close relationship with JASC. You have our very best wishes for the future. I continue to be quite pleased with the development of our board, and greatly appreciate all of their many contributions to the Society. We continue to enjoy excellent classes of incoming board members; terrific individuals, great talents and highly engaged with Japan and the Society. I thank all of our directors and governors for their service. With heartfelt regards, We remain committed to providing both our membership and the public at large with a wide variety of quality programs and events. Our financial affairs are in order. With a dedicated and energized board, loyal members, and the continuing key support of the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago and others, we are pleased to embark on the Society’s new year. Okamura Yoshifumi Consul General of Japan at Chicago Thank all of you for your support of the Society. The Society’s future is bright and I look forward to working with you. Sincerely, Michael H. Moskow Chairman JASC-12007_2012AnnualReport_111512.indd 5-6 11/19/12 1:25 PM L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T September 30, 2012 Dear Society Members, As the new Japan America Society of Chicago President, I am pleased to report to you on the progress of your Society as we complete our 81st anniversary celebration year. I thank you and friends of the Society for the great support this past year. The purpose of the Japan America Society of Chicago is to create and promote friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. Throughout the year, business, public affairs, social, educational and cultural programming contribute to greater Japanese-American understanding and friendship. Your support of the Society furthers our important mission. Two key, essential elements of our success are membership and development. Numerous member companies and individual members have provided direct financial support to our Society this past year, including many as event or program sponsors or contributors. We thank each one of you. We also depend upon our individual and corporate members and thank you all so much. In recognition of this support, we dedicate the back of this annual report to list our annual program underwriters, sponsors of individual programs, corporate members and donors. I invite you to please note the organizations and individuals that have supported our Society. Their support, along with others, is so vital to our Society and we thank them deeply. Thank you again to all that have supported us so well. I am very excited about our new year. We very much look forward to working with you and serving you going forward. Sincerely, The Honorable J.D. Bindenagel President Of course, programming is the core of our activities in pursuit of our mission. Once again, we had a year of exciting and interesting programs, events and classes. Some of the speakers and programs that are representative of the full year’s slate include Ambassador Rust Deming, Johns Hopkins University Adjunct Professor in Japan Studies, whose keynote speech at the annual meeting was on, “The Impact of March 11 on U.S.-Japan Relations and the Challenges Ahead,” and Masaaki Kanno, Managing Director & Head of Economic Research at J.P. Morgan (Japan), who spoke on, "Japan and the U.S. Economic Forecast for 2013," which included his insights on the innovation revolution that is changing the economies of Japan and the U.S. These are just some examples of our many great programs from this past year. Please do see the wide range of programs listed in the back of this annual report. Programming, membership and development continue to be the cornerstones and the engines of our Society and give us the stability of the these three legs of the stool. We congratulate and thank these three committees, and all that contributed to their successes, for their great efforts and results on behalf of the Society. I also wish to specially recognize and thank some of the organizations that we work with continuously to develop, publicize and deliver our programming and other services to our members. The Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, JETRO, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chicago, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, among others, are great partners to the Society. On behalf of our members, I can assure these key partners that we will be mutually supportive and cooperative and assist them wherever we can. Finally, we have great Directors and Governors and an exceptional staff. I am particularly grateful to The Honorable Michael Moskow, our Chairman, The Honorable Yoshifumi Okamura, Consul General of Japan at Chicago, our Honorary Chairman and to Senator Adlai Stevenson, our Chairman Emeritus. Their wisdom and counsel is invaluable. We will miss Yoshifumi Okamura, but thank him for his service to the Society and wish him well in his new role. I would also like to thank my counterparts Takeo Aoyama and Bob Karr who currently serve as Executive Vice Presidents. Both Takeo and Bob provide distinguished and valued service to the Society. I thank them and all of our Directors, Officers and Governors for their great service, efforts and results in advancing our purpose. I would like to give special thanks to the committee co-chairs who also give generously of their time and talents to the Society. Our staff Mitsukuni Baba, Executive Director, Erika Kono and Satoko Ogi, quietly go about their work, producing great programs and services for our members, day in and day out. I personally thank them for their devotion and skill. While our Society continues to achieve our mission, we still face many challenges. To maintain our steady financial footing and continue our robust programming, we have much hard work ahead of us. The worldwide economic crisis caused many to struggle and presented with uncertainties for the future. I am confident with the strong support we have that we will continue on the path to success that we are on at the Society. Nevertheless, we will have to continue to deliver excellent programs and great member value in a financially careful fashion. We intend to do that. At the same time, I ask for your continuing input, participation and support. With that, we look forward to a highly productive year, providing great value to you, our members.
