Today my class started the Place Value chapter. I will learn to use place value
to read, write, and compare whole numbers and decimals. I will also learn to
solve problems using the four-step problem-solving plan. Below are my
vocabulary words for this chapter.

Vocabulary
annex: To place a zero to the right of a decimal without changing a number’s value.
5.1 = 5.10
0.13 = thirteen hundredths
equivalent decimals: decimals that have the
same value

standard form: the usual or common way to write a number using digits
one million, two hundred fifty thousand, four hundred twenty-six
is 1,250,426 in standard form.

At-Home Activity
Materials: number cube, paper, pencil
• Draw nine horizontal lines next to
each other on a piece of paper.
Each horizontal line should be about
one inch in length.
• Roll the number cube and fill in
any one of the lines with the
digit represented by the number cub
e.
• Continue rolling until all the lines
are filled.
• Beginning at the far right of the
lines, add commas between
each set of three digits.
• What number is represented?
• Repeat the process a few more tim
es. Compare and order the
numbers as you create them.

While driving in the car, find
numbers on signs. State how
many digits are in each
number. For example, a
speed limit sign that says 35
will have two digits. A stateroute sign that says 161 will
have three digits.
