He carried her away to a great dry plain, left her there, and returned to live in his own wigwam of solid rock. Confined to this place of loneliness and destitution, the maiden was visited by an emissary of Hiawatha - the Supreme Deity of the Indians. He gave her a peculiar black rock and told her to make it into a spear. Then he showed her where to strike it against the rocks of the great dry plain. The maiden did as the Great Spirit had instructed, and at once a great soaring of water gushed out and flowed rapidly over the plain. It began to fill in all the vast space, and as it did, the maiden climbed higher and higher up the rocks until she reached the top. When the waters ceased to rise, the evil spirit was imprisoned some distance away in another part of the big rock, surrounded by water and compelled to remain there for all time. One day, the Indian maiden escaped in a canoe which floated out to her from shore. The land on which she climbed was Bear Island, and the waters are how Leech Lake was formed. This tournament has set a tradition of always being held the weekend after Memorial Day. Bird Watching and Wildflowers The Paul Bunyan State Trail, named for the legendary large logger, is arguably Minnesota’s favorite paved trail for hiking, biking, inline skating, snowmobiling and now geocaching. What is geocaching? A free outdoor treasure hunt where players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online. Specifically, the meaning of the word geocaching refers to GEO for geography, and CACHING, the process of hiding a cache. A cache is term used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions. This rapidly growing high-tech sport is for those who love technology, nature and adventure. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. It’s a great family activity that provides excitement, exercise, and fresh air. All ages and levels of mobility can enjoy it. With over 1 million caches hidden around the world are often hidden at places you never knew existed or wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Including geocaching in your vacation plans provides an opportunity to explore the area beyond the typical ‘tourist’ perspective. Along with budding trees and blossoming wildflowers, you can see hundreds of different songbirds, waterfowl and other birds in their natural habitat. The Leech Lake area has one of the largest bald eagle populations in the state and is truly a birdwatcher’s dream. Sailing and Skiing Leech Lake area is a haven of sunny days, spectacular sunsets and nights filled with the songs of nature. One of the largest exhibits of Ojibwe articles in Northern Minnesota will provide history and insight to the original inhabitants of the county. Other exhibits include those on fur trade, lumbering, transportation and the early pioneers. Our pioneer Huset School was built in 1912 and is furnished with period furniture. This is a “hands-on” exhibit and provides a country school experience. Our research center is open daily to genealogists and researchers for a fee. We offer an obituary file and microfilmed county newspapers from 1894 to present, hundreds of family and individual histories, numerous city and village histories, thousands of photographs and assistance if needed.
