Welcome
to the Leech Lake area
However the waters of Leech Lake came to be, one thing is sure: today
Leech Lake is still the land of stories. As more and more people discover
this beautiful area as an ideal tourism spot, their adventures turn into
stories that are told over and over. Leech Lake, one of Minnesota’s
largest, is surrounded by many smaller lakes and located in the heart
of the Chippewa National Forest. Although fishing continues to be one
of the most popular activities, visitors find this area holds a stunning
array of experiences, activities and opportunity.
Whether people visit for a day, a weekend, a week, or even longer,
they leave with a treasury of tales. You will too, when you visit us and indulge
in whatever your spirit desires. Fish for muskie, bass, walleye, northern pike, jumbo perch, and
crappies on Leech Lake or smaller lakes. Enjoy a sunbath along miles of unspoiled, natural shoreline. Golf on
one of our beautiful courses, offering a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Hike, bike, snowmobile, ski, ATV, or horseback
ride across a wealth of trails that make you feel as though you’re the first to discover them. Hunt waterfowl as millions
of migrating ducks and geese pass through our thousands of acres of lakes and rivers. Take to the Aspen forest, thick
woodlands, and open fields to hunt for grouse and deer. Relax in the small-town friendliness and explore our many quaint
stores that offer unusual gifts and merchandise. Discover other points of interest, such as the Museum of Natural History,
Cass County Historical Society, Sugar Point Battle Monument and Itasca State Park.
Families come to the Leech Lake area to learn, explore and have fun together. Couples come for romantic getaways, and
individuals can find quiet solitude. Whatever you seek, come to the Leech Lake area and explore the possibilities.

Ojibwe legend of Leech Lake
Many moons before any Ojibwe can remember, when the only people
across this land were a woman and her daughter, an evil spirit came
down and captured the maiden. He carried her away to a great dry
plain, left her there, and returned to live in his own wigwam of solid rock.
Confined to this place of loneliness and destitution, the maiden was
visited by an emissary of Hiawatha - the Supreme Deity of the Indians.
He gave her a peculiar black rock and told her to make it into a spear.
Then he showed her where to strike it against the rocks of the great dry
plain.
The maiden did as the Great Spirit had instructed, and at once a great
soaring of water gushed out and flowed rapidly over the plain. It began
to fill in all the vast space, and as it did, the maiden climbed higher and
higher up the rocks until she reached the top. When the waters ceased
to rise, the evil spirit was imprisoned some distance away in another
part of the big rock, surrounded by water and compelled to remain
there for all time.
One day, the Indian maiden escaped in a canoe which floated out to
her from shore. The land on which she climbed was Bear Island, and the
waters are how Leech Lake was formed.

Fishing -
Spring, Summer and Fall
Minnesota’s
Paul Bunyan GeoTour
Fishing in the Leech Lake
area offers a variety that can
please anyone interested in
fishing and enjoying a day on
the water. Area lakes suit every
desire from small to large. Choose
the serene, quiet waters of a small,
hidden lake or the excitement of the wide
open waters for your fishing indulgence. In
2014, the Leech Lake area is excited to host the
6th Annual Leech Lake Walleye Tournament on May
31st-June 1st. This tournament has set a tradition of
always being held the weekend after Memorial Day.
Bird Watching and Wildflowers
The Paul Bunyan State Trail, named for the legendary large
logger, is arguably Minnesota’s favorite paved trail for hiking,
biking, inline skating, snowmobiling and now geocaching.
What is geocaching? A free outdoor treasure hunt where
players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a
smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online.
Specifically, the meaning of the word geocaching refers to GEO
for geography, and CACHING, the process of hiding a cache.
A cache is term used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for
concealing and preserving provisions.
This rapidly growing high-tech sport is for those who
love technology, nature and adventure. Participants
navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then
attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that
location.
It’s a great family activity that provides excitement, exercise,
and fresh air. All ages and levels of mobility can enjoy it. With
over 1 million caches hidden around the world are often hidden
at places you never knew existed or wouldn’t have
discovered otherwise. Including geocaching in your
vacation plans provides an opportunity to explore the
area beyond the typical ‘tourist’ perspective.
Along with budding trees and blossoming wildflowers,
you can see hundreds of different songbirds, waterfowl
and other birds in their natural habitat. The Leech Lake
area has one of the largest bald eagle populations in the
state and is truly a birdwatcher’s dream.
Sailing and Skiing
Leech Lake area is a haven of sunny days,
spectacular sunsets and nights filled with the songs
of nature. Take an afternoon for sailing, skiing or
swimming in the crystal blue waters. The Leech Lake
Regatta has become an area tradition. This summer
will be the 43rd Annual and the colorful sailboats
are sights you won’t want to miss.

the woods — perfect for hiking, biking

Chippewa National Forest or Paul Bunyan
and Heartland Trails.
Snow shoe, hike, and enjoy the
vast expanses of wilderness and the
continuous beauty of the area. Winter

Fourth of July
The Fourth of July
celebration in Walker
invokes feelings of nostalgia
and patriotism beginning with a
traditional small town parade and
ending with late evening fireworks.
The parade begins at 2:00 p.m. and
is led through downtown Walker by
the Grand Marshal who is chosen by
the community to be recognized for
his or her dedication and contribution
to the area. American Legion and
Veteran floats are predominant in the
parade with reminders of who we are
as a nation and from where we have
come. The pride and respect of the
spectators is always inspiring as they
stand to salute Veterans and honor the
American flag.
After the parade there is an annual
fish fry in the city park and activities
for all ages by the lake. Families enjoy
food, games, and dancing to local
bands as they wait for the fireworks to
begin at dusk.
Each blast of fireworks lighting
up the sky is complemented by the
colorful display reflecting on the water
of Leech Lake. The ooh’s and aah’s
resonate clearly from both the crowd
on shore and spectators in their boats.
The focus of the day is family and
community. Visitors to the area feel like
Walker is home by the end of the night.

Cass County Historical Society Museum & Pioneer School
The Cass County Museum invites you to visit us and learn about the settlement of our county. One of the largest
exhibits of Ojibwe articles in Northern Minnesota will provide history and insight to the original inhabitants of the
county. Other exhibits include those on fur trade, lumbering, transportation and the early pioneers. Our pioneer
Huset School was built in 1912 and is furnished with period furniture. This is a “hands-on” exhibit and provides a
country school experience.
Our research center is open daily to genealogists and researchers for a fee. We offer an obituary file and microfilmed
county newspapers from 1894 to present, hundreds of family and individual histories, numerous city and village
histories, thousands of photographs and assistance if needed.
Hours: Open Seasonally
