SCHOOL HYMN
1.
We build our school on Thee, O Lord;
To Thee we bring our common need;
The loving heart, the helpful word,
The tender thought, the kindly deed;
With these we pray Thy Spirit may
Enrich and bless our school alway.
2.
We work together in Thy sight,
We live together in Thy love;
Guide Thou our faltering steps aright,
And lift our thoughts to Heaven above.
Dear Lord, we pray Thy Spirit may
Be present in our school alway.
3.
Hold Thou each hand, to keep it just;
Touch Thou our lips, and make them pure;
If Thou art with us, Lord, we must
Be faithful friends and comrades sure.
Dear Lord, we pray Thy Spirit may
Be present in our school alway.
4.
We change, but Thou art still the same;
The same good Master, Teacher, Friend.
We change, but Lord, we bear Thy name;
To journey with it to the end;
And so we pray Thy Spirit may
Be present in our school alway.

Spiritual, Civic and Moral Education
It has always been our emphasis to develop students holistically and to
instil in them high moral values as well as an altruistic personality in the
spirit of Christian faith. Moral values were introduced to, and developed in,
our students through school life and the school culture. Various activities
were organized, such as assembly talks, ICAC anti-crime and anti-corruption
workshops, “e-time” on-line reading programme jointly organized by ICAC,
Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, Commission On Youth and
HK Writers Association, and talks on stress management and time
management conducted by the school social workers. A series of sex
education sessions was also arranged by the school social workers for the
junior form students and a talk on sexual harassment was given to F.1 by
the Forest Union. The Big Brother Big Sister Project provided leadership

training to the senior form students who then formed a support group for
the junior form students. The F.1 Orientation Day was held in late August
to facilitate the adaptation of the F.1 students. For Form 1 and Form 2
students, moral education was reinforced through a development
programme organized by the Team of Health Service for the Youth. Apart
from these activities, moral and value education was done in the form
teacher period as well as incorporated into the curricula, especially those of
Chinese Language, Civic Education and Religious Studies.
Spiritual education was complemented by a strong emphasis
on Christian education, including the daily assembly, Religious Studies
lessons and Christian Fellowship programmes. We were grateful to
Mr. Thomas Chow, the chaplain, for coming regularly to preach at our
morning assembly and for supporting our religious activities. The College
also followed the tradition of celebrating Christmas at St. John’s Cathedral
on 22 December 2004 with Rev. Ip Kam Fai as the preacher. Our Ascension
Day Service was held at the Cathedral on 25 May 2005. We thank Rev. Hung
Fan Hon for delivering the sermon. Apart from these regular services, this
year, a series of activities was organized in the religious week from 3 to
7 April 2006, (including hymn-sharing, book exhibitions, faith sharing on
campus) and an evangelistic meeting held on 4 April 2006. We were
grateful that Mr. Cheung Kin Ting, the renowned movie director, came as
our guest in the evangelistic meeting to share his life and spiritual
experience. In addition, the Christian fellowship, bible study groups and
morning prayer meetings were held to provide our students with a learning
and growing environment according to biblical principles. There was
testimony sharing of Christian students at assembly and the audience was
impressed by the Christian students’ faith and witnesses.
The aim of civic education is to foster students with an attitude
of caring about one’s fellow human beings and make a positive difference
in their lives. To achieve this objective, we have participated in
many meaningful activities with external organizations such as the
Youth Committee on Anti-Smoking to promote a smoking-free
environment, the Ronald McDonald House to raise funds to help sick
children and their families, the Consumer Culture Study Award VII, the
UNICEF Ambassador Scheme, the voluntary community work organized by
the office of Hon. Alan Leong Kah-Kit SC and an intensive study of poverty
which includes inviting guest speakers from World Vision and Society for
Community Organization. Internally, the Current Affairs Club has also
organized many varied activities to arouse civic awareness. These activities
include a forum on the topic of gender equality, a survey about universal
suffrage, a news quiz competition, a news reporting competition and the
CAC days. Most of the activities held were well received by students. In
particular, the CAC days received much praise for their excellent
organization and art work and the enthusiastic participation of the
students.

Extra-curricular Activities and Enrichment Programmes
Extra-curricular activities have always been an important component of
students’ education in this school. These activities not only allow students
to join programmes of their own choice, but also enable them to learn about
leadership and teamwork, as well as undergo gratifying and rewarding
experiences. A list of extra-curricular activities offered is given in Table 1.
Different types of programmes were organized for our students to
suit their individual needs. For example, different leadership programmes,
such as the Harvard Model Congress Asia in September 2005 and the
Singapore Leadership Convention in June 2006, were offered to students
of different forms. Study tours and student exchange programmes to
different places, including mainland China, Singapore, Australia and the UK,
were offered to our Form 2 to Form 6 students.
To further broaden students’ horizons, expeditionary programmes
were offered. The first one was a nine-day programme to Xinjiang in
July 2006 for 16 Form 4-6 students. The second one was an eleven-day
Outward Bound Training Programme in Sabah, Malaysia, for 16 Form 6
students during the Easter Holidays.
In order to allow our students to engage themselves in meaningful
activities, we took the initiative to organize the Student Activity Week from
26 November to 4 December 2005. Lessons were suspended for Form 1 to
Form 4 students so that they could take part in different activities: Form 1
Life Education Camp, Form 2 Guangzhou Putonghua Camp, Form 3 Study
Trip to Nansha and Form 4 Outward Bound Training Programme.
Thanks to our alumni at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the
Residential Learning Programme continued this year. Fifteen Form 6
students spent 5 days in February 2006 at the CUHK enjoying the life of
real university students. In addition, they received the warmest welcome
from our alumni there. It has again proven to be a most rewarding journey
for the participants and the feedback was most encouraging.
Apart from all the above programmes, we tried to further enhance
our junior form students’ development by implementing “Enrichment
Programmes” for all Form 1 to Form 3 students. All junior form students
were required to undertake “one musical instrument, one sport and
one community service”. With funding from the College, students were
required to learn a musical instrument and to participate in at least one
community service. For sports, Form 1 students were introduced to track
and field events on the Athletic Activities Day and Form 2 and Form 3
students had the opportunity to try out various sports including archery,
bowling, canoeing, lawn bowls, golf, horseback riding, rowing and
ice-skating.
In relation to sports, our annual Sports Day was held on 15 and
17 November 2005 at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground. We were honoured to
have Ms. Malina Ngai Man Ling, Hong Kong record holder for discus and shot

put, to present prizes to our students. Our Swimming Gala was held on
6 October 2005 at Victoria Park Swimming Pool. We invited teachers
from the High School Attached To Tsinghua University to present prizes
to our students.
To allow students to make better use of their summer vacation,
we arranged a Summer Sports Training Programme for all students.
This year, activities included basketball, fencing, squash, swimming, yoga,
dance(hip hop/jazz), taekwondo and table tennis. There was also special
training for several of our school teams, which was open to selected new
Form 1 students from our own primary schools.
The year 2005/06 was an extremely busy but also exciting year for
the music enthusiasts in our school. The primary objective of our music
education programme is to preserve our fine musical tradition, expose our
students to the artistic-musical world outside and instil in them a lifelong
passion for music. The Music Department was actively involved in all four of
the 90th Anniversary celebrations. In particular, the Messiah Concert held
on 28 December 2005 was a grand musical reunion of 9 alumni vocal
soloists and more than 300 alumni and students in the combined choir and
orchestra.
In the 2006 Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the Senior Mixed Voice
Choir, Treble Choir, Harmonica Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble earned
2 Firsts, 2 Seconds and 2 Thirds in the group events, while students
continued to achieve outstanding results, including 13 Firsts, 26 Seconds,
and 31 Thirds in individual events.
Opportunities for external performances abound for all school music
teams. The Wind Band played at the opening ceremony of Sports Day and
the 90th Anniversary Dinner, while the Harmonica Ensemble performed at
the 2005 Michaelmas Fair in St. John’s Cathedral.
The 90th Anniversary Extravaganza held at AsiaWorld-Expo on 8 July
2006 was not the conclusion of an eventful year, but the beginning of
a busy summer for some of the school teams. The Treble Choir participated
in the 2006 Hong Kong International Youth and Children’s Choir Festival and
earned a coveted Gold Award in the Youth Choir - under 16 category.
In July, 46 members of the Concert Choir took part in the famed
Europa Cantat in Mainz, Germany, attending workshops and performing
in exchange concerts and in churches. Sixteen members of the Harmonica
Orchestra went to Taipei in August to compete in the 2006 Asia Pacific
Harmonica Festival, obtaining impressive results in the solo, duet and
ensemble classes.
Student Union
During the year, one of the Student Union’s main contributions was
their assistance in organizing the 90th Anniversary celebration activities.
We were most impressed by their wholehearted efforts in the promotion,
ticket-selling and also reception processes.

To enhance our students’ campus life and facilitate classroom learning,
the Student Union organized the second-hand book selling, C.E days, as well
as various fun-filled activities like the Karaoke competition, Christmas Ball,
and the SPCC Challenge. All were warmly received by their schoolmates.
Being a student body safeguarding students’ interests, the Student
Union has not forgotten their vital role as a bridge between various school
communities. Through organizing various interclub activities, such as the
C.E. days, the publicity training course, as well as the multicultural
Valentine’s Day, they have reinforced unity among clubs and societies.
They have also organized interschool activities such as the F.5 and F.7
inter-school oral practice, the Avant Garde Interschool Karaoke competition
and the leadership training camp, aiming to bring together their fellow
schoolmates and students from other schools so that they can learn from
each other.
One of the Student Union’s main initiatives this year was the Campus
Webcast which provides schoolmates with a channel to express their
opinions, be aware of the latest happenings, and most important of all, to
show care and concern for the school. They also kept further developing
the Junior Board programme to help build up a team of committed and
responsible members for the Student Union in the future.

Achievements in Extra-curricular Activities
Our students continued to excel at the Schools Music Festival
and Schools Speech Festival. We were also proud to see continuous
improvement in the field of sports with several teams being in the top three
positions in inter-school tournaments. We wish to congratulate the winners
as well as all those who have participated in and supported our sportsmen
and sportswomen in these events. It was most gratifying to see many of
our students winning awards and excelling in various inter-school
competitions. The trophies and honour won are the fruits of high morale
among our students, commitment of teachers and participants and
generous funding from the College. “For a list of student achievements,
please refer to our new publication — The Achievers.”
Campus Improvement
Under the School Improvement Programme, the 2/F covered
playground has been converted into 3 new classrooms and the new annex
rising next to the basketball court will provide new special rooms for
computer-assisted learning, language, small group teaching, as well as
– 15 –

a new staff room and multi-purpose room. These facilities will be in full
operation in October 2006.
A schematic design for the redevelopment of the Macdonnell Road
primary school site is in progress. The existing building will be demolished
and an extension block for the secondary school campus, the Li Chong Yuet
Ming Building will be constructed. The construction period is scheduled from
2008 to 2011 after the primary school is relocated to the new premises in
Wong Chuk Hang. Improvement works within the existing secondary school
campus are planned to be carried out concurrently provided that normal
school activities will not be jeopardized, and are scheduled to be completed
by 2013.
In order to provide sufficient facilities for teaching and normal school
activities, the EMB has approved the College use of 26 Kennedy Road as
a decanting site during the secondary school redevelopment from 2008
to 2013.
Involvement of Parents and Alumni
Apart from an unprecedented level of involvement in the preparations
for the 90th Anniversary Celebrations, our parents and alumni have
continued to strengthen their close ties with the school and show their full
support to our effort to provide quality education to our students. For a
report on their activities, please refer to Table 2 and Table 3.
Donations for Charitable Causes and Fund-raising Campaign
Being a Christian school, we have always attached great importance to
caring and sharing. On 30 September 2005, 100 staff and students
donated blood to the Hong Kong Red Cross Society. On the Dress Casual
Day on 30 September 2005, we raised a total of $54,300.20 for The
Community Chest. Twice in the year, we collected donations from our staff
and students of the secondary schools to be distributed to the following
charitable organizations:
Oxfam, the Sheng Kung Hui Diocesan Welfare Council, St. John’s
Cathedral, the Spastic Association of Hong Kong, the H.K. Anti-Cancer
Society, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Association, the Hong Kong Tuberculosis,
Chest and Heart Diseases Association, St. James’ Settlement, the
Hong Kong Red Cross, the Salvation Army, St. John Ambulance Association
and Brigade, the Society for the Relief of Disabled Children, the
Children’s Cancer Foundation, Unicef and Friends of the Earth.
To raise funds for The Council of St. Paul’s Co-educational College
Charitable Trust, we organized our sixth annual walkathon at The Peak on
6 November 2005. With the enthusiastic support of parents, staff,
alumni and students, we raised a total of $2,279,620.
The Extravaganza, held on 7 July 2006 at the AsiaWorld-Expo, raised
$5,014,799 for the Landmark Fundraising Campaign. By the end of
August 2006, we were pleased to have reached the $256,688,881 mark.

Primary Schools
MacDonnell Road Primary School
2005-2006 was an exciting and busy year for all students, staff
members and parents. The whole academic year was occupied by the
celebratory activities for the School’s 90th Anniversary and the merging
tasks of the two Primary Schools.
Besides working hard on the series of celebratory activities throughout
this academic year, our curriculum and co-curricular activities were not put
aside. Our students’ studies and inter-school competitions continued to
bear fruit. The efforts of students, parents and teachers were rewarded
with the ever fruitful awards and prizes from Hong Kong Schools Sports
Federation, Speech Festival, Music Festival, Mathematics Olympiad, etc.
The awards/prizes obtained by our Swimming Team, Rugby Team, Senior
Choir, Junior Choir, Percussion Band, Mathematics Olympiad Team and
individual students proved that St. Paul’s Co-educational (MacDonnell Road)
Primary School has provided high quality all-round education to nurture our
young generation.
Our School was extremely lucky to have a team of dedicated staff and
a party of committed parents. Both groups worked extra hard this year to
enhance the merging of two Primary Schools. Their efforts helped to mark
this milestone in the history of the School.
Kennedy Road Primary School
Over the past year, teachers from different panels have had regular
meetings on developing an innovative curriculum and implementing new
strategies in extra-curricular activities. The school held various kinds of
seminars and workshops for its teaching staff and students to prepare
them for the merging of the two primary schools in September 2006.
This year, we put our main emphasis on the enhancement of the
language of Chinese and Putonghua. Due to our success in implementing
“Multiple Intelligences” in primary classrooms, our students’ talents in both
intellectual and interpersonal aspects were explored and further developed.
Many students continued to excel in various kinds of inter-school
competitions, obtaining outstanding results in the Hong Kong Schools
Speech and Music Festivals, winning awards of “The Outstanding Youth of
Hong Kong” and “The Outstanding Student of Hong Kong”. One of our
students won the top prize in “The Project Talent Search” competition.
In sports, two students obtained “The Outstanding Primary School’s
Male Athlete Award (Urban)” and “The Outstanding Primary School’s Table
Tennis Player Award (Hong Kong & Kowloon District)” respectively.
Furthermore, one student represented Sheng Kung Hui primary schools of
Hong Kong to join the National Olympiad Mathematics Competition held in
Qingdao and attained excellent results.

In addition, our science teachers were awarded the prestigious
“Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence” in Science Education Key
Learning Area due to their distinguished teaching strategies and
enthusiasm in Science Education. In the past year, our science teachers
have conducted workshops for local and overseas educators while our
English teachers shared their teaching experience with teachers from other
local schools.
90th Anniversary Celebrations
This year marked the 90th Anniversary of St. Paul’s Co-educational
College and to plan and execute the celebrations, an organizing committee
comprised of the Supervisor of the College, the Principal of the College,
staff and committee members of the Parent-Teacher Associations of the
three schools, as well as committee members of the Alumni Association,
was set up in May 2004. The theme for the anniversary was “To Serve,
To Excel” and a series of four events was held to commemorate the occasion.
The first event was the Fun Fair held on 25 and 26 September. We
were honoured to have Professor Arthur Li, Secretary of Education and
Manpower as well as our alumnus, as our guest of honour. In a break with
tradition, the Fun Fair was held on all three campuses and it featured game
stalls, food stalls, exhibitions and performances and was very well attended.
The theme for our Messiah Concert, the second event, was “Christ the
King”. It was held on 28 December in the Concert Hall of the Cultural Centre.
The concert encompassed highlights from Handel’s Messiah and was
performed by over 300 alumni and student singers who were accompanied
by our school orchestra. The Concert was followed five nights later with our
Celebration Dinner hosted by the Alumni Association on 2 January. This was
a resounding success and there were over 180 tables in the Grand Hall of
the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The final celebratory event was The Extravaganza, a fundraising
activity to support our Landmark Fund-raising Campaign, held on 7 July at
the AsiaWorld-Expo. Students and staff of the three schools performed on
stage in a variety of performances together with several notable alumni in
front of an audience of more than 6,000 people. Over HK$5 million was
raised through this event.
Putting together these four events called for the combined efforts of
the staff, students and parents of the three schools as well as our alumni.
The dedication and enthusiasm that all exhibited clearly shows that the
St. Paul’s spirit is very much alive and we would like to thank those
concerned for helping us make our 90th Anniversary Celebrations a success.

The Way Forward
1.
Holistic, developmental and experiential learning in the four dimensions
of Leadership and Community Service; Language and Culture;
Humanities, Science and Mathematics; Aesthetic and Creativity
We strongly believe that the acquisition of a global perspective is
essential in today’s world. We have therefore initiated several
programmes as the first steps in instilling a world-view in our students.
Our international student exchange programme has grown from
strength to strength. Starting with a one-week exchange programme
for our Form 6 students with The High School Attached to Tsinghua
University, Beijing in 2004, we have now formed relationships with nine
reputable schools in seven cities in Australia, Canada, Mainland China,
Singapore and the U.S. We have also extended the programme to our
Forms 2, 3 and 4 for periods ranging from one week to five weeks. In
addition to this, each term-break and summer holiday period, we offer
a host of overseas study trips with varying themes such as community
service in Xinjiang, China, adventure in Sabah, Malaysia and English
Enhancement Trip and English Literary Trip in England. We started to
offer language hors’doeuvre, or language lessons in Arabic and Spanish,
and not only will we continue to do so in the coming year, we will also
start an advanced class in Spanish. We hosted our first international
conference when we invited overseas students from ten schools in
eight cities for the Student Science Conference in April. We will
continue to hold such thematic conferences each year and plans are
for us to hold an international music conference in 2006/2007. For the
coming year, we will extend our Student Activities Week to our Form 6
students, giving them the opportunity to attend lectures, workshops,
seminars and to experience life in local tertiary institutions or to be
attached to companies either in Hong Kong or Mainland China.
2.
Planning and preparation for the Senior Secondary Curriculum
The Academic Committee has worked out a preliminary New
Senior Secondary curriculum framework including the possible
combination and choices of subjects, learning hours of each subject
and timetabling arrangement.
In the coming year, it is hoped that this first cohort of Form One
NSS students will be taught the junior curriculum which would prepare
them to start learning the NSS curriculum a year earlier in Form Three
in 2008/09.
The work on designing and developing the NSS Liberal Studies has
started and will continue in the coming year with the foundation built
from Civic Education and other related subjects.

3.
Merging of the two primary schools and integration with the secondary
school in the “One-school / Through-train” spirit
The past academic year was an eventful one with the
ground-breaking ceremony of the new primary school campus in
Wong Chuk Hang, renaming of the two merged primary schools as
St Paul’s Co-educational College Primary School (SPCCPS) and
appointment of Ms Lydia Lee Tuen Yee as the new Headmistress of
SPCCPS.
Under the Task Force on merging and integrating of the secondary
and primary schools chaired by the Principal of the College, and
working in the spirit of “One-school”, a tailor-made seamless
curriculum suited to the high standard and level of capability of our
students with enrichment, extension and enhancement learning
throughout the primary and secondary school years is being
developed. It is aimed that our primary students will complete their
primary curriculum within five years and a new Primary Six curriculum
will be designed and planned for use in two years’ time.
4.
Comprehensive School Review
Analysis of the Stakeholders’ Surveys of teachers, students and
parents conducted this year has drawn our attention to two issues of
concern requiring follow-up action in the coming year for improvement.
Students are of the view that they would benefit more and would
be better motivated and happier in learning with appropriate praise and
encouragement from the teachers. Workshops in understanding the
value and technique in giving praise and encouragement will be
organized in the coming year for teachers.
In order to encourage and promote a more thinking and enquiry
learning approach in students, teachers are encouraged to build
into their lesson plans the space and time for students to think and
ask questions.
5.
Enhancement of teacher professional development
This was the first year when the three-year appraisal cycle began
and the new teacher appraisal, development and promotion system
was in use. Teachers responded enthusiastically to the new system and
eight teachers applied for re-grading and promotion under the
new system. Teachers and subject department heads are strongly
encouraged to make good use of the funding on professional
development on an individual basis and on a department/subject basis.
6.
Academic counselling for F.6 students - a new task for 2006/07
All F.6 students will be assigned an academic counsellor who is
his/her subject teacher to offer more personal and timely academic
advice/counsel on the academic progress of the student throughout
the two years of AL study.

Appreciation
The past academic year was a most fruitful and eventful one for
SPCC. It saw us celebrating our 90th Anniversary, breaking ground at
the new primary school campus in Wong Chuk Hang, effecting the
merging of the renamed St Paul’s Co-educational College Primary
School, appointing Ms Lydia Lee as its first Headmistress, and
launching many new programmes such as the Student Activities Week,
to name just a few of the highlights.
Many people have contributed generously to our school in our
zealous strive to provide quality education to our students and to break
new ground in the history of SPCC and education in Hong Kong. I would
like to thank our council members, the Education and Manpower Bureau,
our parents, alumni and friends for their advice and support. In particular,
I would like to thank Professor Tam Sheung Wai, our Council Chairman,
the Chief Justice, the Honorable Andrew Li, our Council Vice-chairman,
and Dr Michael Mak, our Supervisor for their unfailing trust and support.
Our school’s greatest asset is a group of devoted, competent and
caring staff whose dedication and professionalism have made St Paul’s
a learning organization and a caring home to all who have the fortune
to learn and work here. We take pride in our school and shall
continue to develop individuals who have high moral values, who are
compassionate and aware of the need for interdependence as a global
citizen, and who are willing to serve the community and contribute to
the well-being of our society.
