Spring 2011 - South Shore Hospital
VO LU M E 16 • S P R I N G 2 011 News for Donors & Supporters We Get By With A Lot of Help From our Friends Thomas J. McCarthy Where would we be without our Friends? Aristotle said, “True friendship is one soul in two bodies.” But, in the case of South Shore Hospital, it is better said as “one mission with thousands of Friends.” Members of the Friends of South Shore Hospital raise funds for new equipment. They support nursing education and help run community programs. They are a social network who advise the Hospital and serve as ambassadors. These men and women who proudly serve as members of the Friends of South Shore Hospital exemplify the “caring” part of our mission. They are a diverse bunch who connect to the Hospital in varied ways: as parents of premature babies; as cancer patients who offer guidance on how to improve the treatment experience for others; as young professionals who want to give back to their neighbors. While their initial motivation is unique, their passion and commitment is united. They are our Friends. I have a favor to ask you…. will you join the Friends of South Shore Hospital? If you are reading this newsletter it means you likely already support or are at least curious about our cause. Your annual membership of $25, together with thousands of others, can make a difference. You can choose a specific area to support, get great discounts at our fun events or just get the satisfaction of knowing you have helped others. You can join easily online at southshorehospital.org/friends, or by sending a check marked “Friends Membership” in the envelope enclosed in this newsletter. I Thomas J. McCarthy Chairman of the Board, South Shore Hospital Charitable Foundation Managing Partner, KAF Financial Advisors Tondorf Family Honored in Cancer Center The Tondorf Family, Woody, Colleen, T.J. and Woody visited the Cancer Center to unveil a plaque dedicated in their honor in the Cancer Center’s Quiet Room. The indoor, familyfriendly fun walk at South Shore Plaza raises funds for Hospice of the South Shore. Over the last 20 years, the Walk has grown to raise more than $250,000 a year to help patients facing cancer, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and other life-limiting illnesses. Hospice of the South Shore serves nearly 500 patients and their families each year. Please consider taking a step toward helping families find peace and closure, as a loved one faces the end of his or her life. For more information on this year’s event or how you can help, contact Heather Dwyer at (781) 624-8094 or heather_dwyer@sshosp.org. I at Sign up online events ital.org/ p s o h e r o h s h t u so One of the easiest ways to get involved in the Walk for Hospice is to form or join a team. A team could be any size–from a handful of family members, neighbors, or a large group of co-workers. As a Walk for Hospice team member, you will have the opportunity to spend the morning with friends, family, or co-workers, while working towards the common goal of raising much-needed funds to support Hospice care on the South Shore. I Great News for Donors Who Want Their Retirement Plans to Help Patient Care Extension of the Charitable IRA Rollover: The charitable IRA rollover, which allows taxpayers who are 70 ½ or older to make tax-free transfers of up to $l00,000 per year from a Traditional IRA or Roth IRA directly to South Shore Hospital, was originally effective for 2006 and 2007 and then twice extended through 2009. However, it was allowed to expire on January 1, 2010 and had not been available until now. The law extends the charitable IRA rollover for two years, retroactive to January 1, 2010 (that is, through 2011). Donors may also count their gift toward fulfilling their required minimum distribution for 2010. What great news for donors who wish to donate part of their IRA to South Shore Hospital. Readers who wish to make a donation or have questions should call Donna Driscoll, Gift Planning Officer at (781) 624-8142 or email at Donna_Driscoll@sshosp.org I Learn More… southshorehospital.org or (781) 624-8600 s o u t h s h o re h o s p i t a l . o r g South Shore Women's Business Network names South Shore Hospital a Signature Charity One of our region’s premier business organizations has named South Shore Hospital one of its choice charities for its 20th anniversary celebration – “Moving Forward, Giving Back.” To honor its members’ passion for community service, they will support our tiniest patients at the Friends of Growing Families Stroller Stroll later this year. “TEAM SSWBN” will stroll proudly while raising urgently needed funds for infant/pediatric services at South Shore Hospital. “For our 20th anniversary, we wanted to pool our efforts as a network and give back to our South Shore neighbors who have supported our businesses for the past 20 years,” said Network President Janet LaBerge, owner of Pembroke-based Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap). For more information on how your family or company can help advance our pediatric programs by joining the Friends of Growing Families, please call Membership Services at (781) 624-4170 or e-mail friends@sshosp.org. I Panera Bread chooses South Shore Hospital as its Dough-Nation Partner Want to help our region’s largest charity while enjoying freshly baked items or a warm bowl of soup? Panera Bread has chosen South Shore Hospital as its South Shore Operation Dough-Nation partner. Participating cafés are located in the following communities: Braintree, Hingham Shipyard, Plymouth, Brockton (opening April 2011), and Raynham. Customers can donate at the counter through Panera Bread’s Community Breadbox cash box program. The Community Breadbox program assures that donations made at Panera Bread feed back into the community. A portion of cash donations made by customers in bakery-cafes may be matched by Panera. Contributions generated through the program have provided basic necessities for those in need, and have created special places and opportunities. If you would like to contribute to thier efforts to assist local non-profit organizations, please look for the Community Breadbox collection containers at participating Panera Bread locations supporting South Shore Hospital. The next time you are enjoying a delicious meal at Panera Bread, please remember to thank them on behalf of our patients. I FOUNDERS’ SOCIETY MEMBERS Fred & Nancy Tob ma n Fred & Nancy Tobman: Fred and Nancy Tobman have a lot in common – a love of the outdoors, traveling, enjoying their own backyard, and philanthropic giving. So it was only natural that when they were married on July 22, 2010, they asked that in lieu of gifts, family and friends instead make a charitable contribution to the South Shore Hospital Journey of Hope Campaign for cancer care. “We both felt strongly about this,” explained Fred of their decision. “It made us feel good and we were so thankful that our loved ones were able to join us in the spirit of giving at this most joyous time in our lives.” “ Support can be transformational and inspiring for everyone and gives donors a unique sense of ownership and intimacy with the mission of the cancer center. ” The Tobmans of Hull became South Shore Hospital Founders’ Society members – which honors supporters who donate $50,000 or more to the Journey of Hope Campaign – after attending the opening of South Shore Hospital’s new Cancer Center in October 2009. They were so impressed and happy that world-class cancer care was being made available to people living on the South Shore that they knew they wanted to become involved somehow. “I attended the opening of the cancer center and met some wonderful people who I could talk to about helping out,” said Fred. One of those he met was Gail Bork, South Shore Hospital Philanthropy Officer, who told Fred about the Founders’ Society and how it recognizes members as visionary leaders whose philanthropy and commitment help lead cancer care for the community into the future. “Becoming Founders’ Society members was a perfect fit for us,” he explained. “It was a continuation of what we had started at our wedding – a way to take the next step and do something even more significant to help people.” (L-R) South Shore Hospital Vice President of Nursing/CNO Timothy Quigley, RMHC of Eastern New England - Board Member Al Bennett, RMHC of ENE - Executive Director Karen McEachern, Joseph Napoli McDonald's Owner/Operator, and South Shore Hospital Pediatric Nurse Manager Judi Cullinane. Ronald McDonald House Charities Helps Renovate Pediatric Playroom When children are hospitalized it can be stressful for the entire family. In an effort to make our playroom on our inpatient pediatric unit friendlier for parents and siblings, we are revamping it. The room will include comfortable furniture, a sleeper sofa for additional family members who want to stay overnight, soothing lighting, a television, a game table, and children’s toys. The generosity of our friends at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Eastern New England has made all this possible with a $25,000 gift. Since it was organized in 1986, RMHC of Eastern New England has given to organizations and programs helping thousands of children and families throughout Eastern New England. Want to help little patients yourself? Please Join the Friends of Growing Families online at southshorehospital.org/friends or call (781) 624-4170. I At South Shore Hospital, Founders’ Society members set the pace for others to follow. Philanthropy plays a profound role in developing a community asset. Support can be transformational and inspiring for everyone and gives donors a unique sense of ownership and intimacy with our mission of healing, caring, and comforting. If you would like to join The Tobman’s in making a difference in advancing cancer care locally through the Journey of Hope, please visit our website at southshorehospital.org or contact Gail Bork at (781) 624-8194 or gail_bork@sshosp.org. I CARING is published by South Shore Hospital Charitable Foundation, which is dedicated to generating support for South Shore Hospital, South Shore VNA, and Hospice of the South Shore. Help support the Hospital’s mission of healing, caring, and comforting by calling Executive Director Kevin Courtney at (781) 624-8600 or visiting southshorehospital.org. CARING SPRING 2011 3 4 • • • • CARING SPRING 2011 Three Cohasset children sold cupcakes to help us fight cancer A busy Duxbury mother organized a road race to support our Cardiovascular Center A Braintree business encouraged employees to give back to the community by volunteering with us A Hingham couple put a bequest in their wills to assure that their legacy would help our mission of healing, caring, and comforting Giving online is easy. Just visit southshorehospital.org. Is Generosity One Key to Happiness? Every one of the people and organizations listed on the following pages gave their time and treasure to expand our mission of healing, caring, and comforting. They were joined by hundreds of thousands of others, from throughout the South Shore and beyond. Their total giving added up to more than $13 million — the most support in one year in South Shore Hospital history. We treat these precious gifts with great care. And, I can assure you that this support was put to great use and is making a difference for our patients each and every day. Why do they give? I am always surprised that, when I thank these philanthropists, a common response is, “The pleasure is all ours.” Amazingly, donors often thank me for what our caregivers have done for them and their families. It is humbling. And it makes me so proud of my colleagues, including medical staff and volunteers. Giving back has a kind of feel-good magic. Perhaps generosity supports happiness. It is my honor and privilege to be surrounded by so many people with a big heart and a caring spirit. If you want to be part of this caring and compassionate group, or if you want to help again, you can donate right away online at southshorehospital.org or by returning the postpaid envelope included in this newsletter. Thank you again for a wonderful year. I Richard H. Aubut President/CEO South Shore Hospital Richard H.
