COMPETITION
WHAT THE HECK IS
Lomography began with an innocent encounter in the early 1990’s when
students in Vienna, Austria, stumbled upon the Lomo Kompakt Automat: a
small, enigmatic Russian camera, perfected by the USSR Minister of Defense
and Industry and his comrade, the Director of the LOMORussian Arms and
Optical Factory.
Being students, they shot from the hip, upside down, and sometimes even by
looking through the viewfinder. They were astounded with the mindblowing photos
that it produced. The colours were vibrant, with deep saturation and vignettes that
framed the shot, it was like nothing they had seen before. Upon returning home,
friends wanted their own Lomo LC-A, igniting a new style of artistic experimental
photography that we now know as Lomography.
Pictures are what Lomography is all about. Nothing compares to the feeling of visually
diving into a pool of shining, new, sweet-smelling lomographs. My pictures, your pictures,
pictures of the world, pictures of fleeting moments, secret passions, boring, brou-ha, left toes,

blurred nothings. Simply everything. Lomography collects, treasures and presents all of this.

Take the scenic route over Chapman’s Peak
to the fishing village of Kalk Bay. Life seems
to slow down a lot in here. The narrow roads are filled with
antique stores, second-hand bookshops, art galleries, delis
and restaurants.
18:00
Sundowners at Polana is a must. It is part of
the Harbour House family of restaurants in the
heart of the Kalk Bay harbour. The cocktail bar is literally on the
rocks so you enjoy drinks and tapas at sea level. If the sea is a little
tempestuous, the waves actually crash against the windows.
If you are on the Atlantic Coast, watch the sun set from the
vantage point of any of the cafes and bars along the Camp’s Bay and
Clifton main roads.

Grab an ice-cream at Sirocco and take a stroll
around the harbour. I enjoy watching the
fishermen as they bring in their catch and display it all along the
harbour’s edge. The wrinkly fishmongers are eccentric, and often
amuse visitors by feeding the fat seals with scraps of fish.
19:30
I can never get enough of the Kalk Bay Theatre.
The creative people here transformed a beautiful
old church into a gorgeous little theatre and they work around the
clock to put on only the best performances. I recommend their
dinner and theater package.
If night is about to fall and you find yourself along the Atlantic
Ocean’s coastline, dinner and a show at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on
the Bay is a must. This gem is in Camps Bay and a lovely place to
enjoy sundowners and a bite before watching a show.

ROCK ART
HOT SPOTS
..........................................................................................
Askari Game Lodge and Spa // www.askarilodge.co.za
Only one hour from Johannesburg, this upmarket lodge has
a well-preserved collection of San Bushmen rock paintings
as well as a large array of ox wagons, carts and other animal
drawn vehicles from the 1800’s. Guided bush walks take
guests through areas where many rock art sites can be found.
Bushmans Kloof // www.bushmanskloof.co.za
The luxury suites are created to blend inconspicuously
into the textures and colours of the gorgeous Cederberg.
Bushmans Kloof is the custodian of over 130 rock art sites.
They are serious about the environment and virtually grow
all their own food on the property. This is the ultimate
luxurious and cultural weekend getaway.
Sanbona Wildlife Reserve // www.sanbona.com
Five-star accommodation surrounded by ancient volcanic
mountains and endless vistas. There are 7 recorded rock
art sites throughout Sanbona Wildlife Reserve dating back
to more than 3500 years. Game drives and a bird watching
paradise.
Kaggakamma // www.kaggakamma.co.za
My ultimate stargazing getaway. The ancient Cederberg
Mountains is home to this little peace pod. The area was
once home to the Bushmen. Today many of their ancient
cave paintings are still clearly visible on the rocks. Here you
will find spectacular scenery and phenomenal night skies,
where the Milky Way, billions of stars, planets, satellites and
shooting stars may be seen by the naked eye.

crowd, but the popular LA VIRUTA
welcomes novices. Around 200 people
pack it out on Fridays and Saturdays, so
go about 3:30am, yes really. I love the
electrotango nights, which seem surreal
within the elegant 1930’s ballroom.
Every time I go to Bar Lo De Roberto,
I head on to the hip, LA CATEDRAL, to
continue the alternative tango experience.
It’s a beautiful old factory, with Tuesdays
the most popular with first-timers.
Another cool place is LA MALDITA
in San Telmo. It has good dancers, a cool
crowd and an unforgettable live band called
Orquesta Típica El Afronte. It’s a fantastic
place to hear bandoneonistas.
If you enter the red door of EL BESO,
you’ll fall in love with the serious side of
tango. The standard is higher than many
clubs as it belongs to one of the city’s best
tango schools, the age range is more mixed
and the men are less on the pull.
To watch Buenos Aires’ classiest and
best dancers, head to Palermo’s old-world,
traditional SALON CANNING. It can
be boring if you’re not top notch and feel
slightly like a bad wedding reception,
however it is incredible to see how the
other half live.

Whereas it’s easy to fake a salsa step and
still look natural at dancing, you can’t do
it with tango. You can’t even fake the more
simple caminada walking step and as for
the gancho leg hook? Forget about it. You
need lessons.
You must not leave Buenos Aires
without treading on well-heeled latino
tootsies, whether in a formal class, at a late
night tango underground milonga (tango
dance hall) or in an intercambio (exchange)
with a tall, dark aficionado. However, be
aware it’s not just about mastering the
steps, but the etiquette too.
I’ve still to master the intertwined
legs. For now I stick to attempting to
share oxygen with an Argentine so hot
I’m constantly calculating how to contort
to take a photo of him, whilst dancing,
without him noticing.
For an informal intro into the world,
I love San Telmo’s Plaza Dorrego on a
Sunday for its outdoor LA MILONGA DEL
INDIO. After stallholders have packed up
the Artisan Fair, the colourful string of
lights come on and it’s tango o’clock. This
spot is great for perving the scene, without
having to participate. Common sight, 70year old men dancing with young tourists,
not as seedy as it sounds.

magine more than a thousand
kilometres of slopes, situated along
one of the planet’s most spectacular
set of mountains, the Dolomites. Then
think about elegant resorts with steaming
open-air hot pools surrounded by shiny
blankets of snow. Try to picture cosy
candlelit restaurants, permeated by the
fragrance of local wood, which serve
expertly prepared traditional dishes
and local award-winning wines.
Now you have a good idea of
what to expect from a holiday in Val
Gardena.
Surrounded by impressive peaks, this
valley stretches for about 25km along
the Isarco River, in the north-eastern
part of Italy. Val Gardena’s excellent
slopes and breathtaking natural wonders
have attracted enthusiastic skiers and
mountain lovers since the beginning
of the twentieth century. However, this
land is known for more than just its
extraordinary landscape. Val Gardena is
also the cradle of the very ancient Ladino
culture, still very strong in many aspects
of the valleys inhabitants’ life such as
the spoken language, the art of wood
carving - a fundamental income for the
local economy - and the gastronomy,
for sure one of the valley’s most popular
attractions. The best culinary destinations
are often complimented by elegant
accommodation facilities and stylish
wellness centers so you get the best out of
your ski holiday.

FIVE FASHION TIPS
2
1 34 5
If showing off huge
brands is not chic
anymore in everyday
life, this is even truer on
the slopes. Should you
be a brand baby, and
you find the temptation
irresistible, try to keep
labels for your after-ski
outfits.
Black and white is always
a winner and the best
choice if you are not
comfortable with mixing
and matching colours.
If you are feeling a bit
more adventurous, you
can play around with
combinations of blue
and red, or red, black and
white.
Since 2011, all children
under 14 must wear a
ski-helmet. This new
rule was quickly adapted
to include all skiers and
the ski-helmet is now
a fundamental piece of
your ski style.
If you have lovely long
hair, it is stylish to wear
it in either a ponytail low
in the neck, or in a soft
plait.
In the evening, even
if you have booked a
fine-dining restaurant,
leave your long black
sparkling dress and
high-heels at home. A
creamy cashmere sweater
over a pair of dark jeans
will be elegant enough,
especially when your
outfit is complimented by
a classy necklace.

delicious food to have the perfect picnic.
THE SPOT
There are many different types of picnics. For a romantic interlude, think of a secluded
spot, or one in a botanical garden under an oak tree. These kinds of picnics should always
have finger foods like strawberries, dainty sandwiches, and macaroons.
For a successful family picnic, go somewhere that the kids can amuse themselves, either with a jungle
gym, or plenty of grass to roll around in. Celebratory picnics need a sunset to toast to, so head to the top
of a mountain, or perch on a rock on the beach.
THE BASKET
The perfect picnic should include rustic bread made for tearing apart with your hands, a gooey cheese,
delicate cold meats, and bright bursts of fresh fruit. Stock your basket with picnic treats from gourmet
delis, and you can’t go wrong. The goods are often pre-packed which will help if it’s a spontaneous picnic.
Whether you go the traditional route with a hand wovenbasket and crockery and cutlery, or if you
simply take a backpack filled with paper plates, you’ll need to make sure all your items are wrapped and
sealed correctly to avoid having a mess instead of a picnic. Get creative with the packing, for example tie
bits of ribbon or twine around the items, and wrap items like bread in colourful paper.

THE PERFECT
The Moveable Feast:
A Picnic Cookbook for
All Seasons
by Vicky Bittner and Denise McMurry
Al fresco recipes for all seasons and
reasons; this book waxes on spring and
wanes on winter with menus to match.
There are elegant ideas for both kids and
adults, from delicious seasonal food to
packing and storing tricks. This joyful book
was written by two friends who bonded
over marching ants and dappled sunlight
when their husbands were in Iraq.
Picnics
by Hilary Heminway and
Alex Heminway
This is the wild child of picnic books.
Turning their noses up at the conventional,
the authors take their picnicking passion
to a boat on a lake, snowshoeing in
the woods, a rodeo tailgate, and even
horseback riding, among many others.
