City makes U-turn on Canton angle parking
Many Canton residents not pleased by city’s angle parking review
BY MARY HELEN SPRECHER
NEWSROOM@BALTIMOREGUIDE.COM
After moving right up to the (angled) line,
Baltimore City is now taking a step back.
Following its announcement that the city
had preliminarily approved head-out angle
parking on certain streets in Canton, volunteers were set to begin carrying around petitions on blocks that would be affected by
changeovers.
Now, the Department of Transportation
has decided that it was perhaps not the best
idea after all.
According to a memo, the city would
“like to take a step back to make sure angled
parking in Canton is implemented in a strategic manner with an eye toward sustainable
green streets and a reduction in car use.”
Say what?
Basically, it means the city wants to study
other street design alternatives -- alternatives
they say will result in traffic calming and
more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly
streets.
Of course, the memo doesn’t really explain
what the city is going to do about Canton’s

Giving thanks: South Baltimore pastor celebrates 25 years as a minister
by MARY HELEN SPRECHER
NEWSROOM@baltimoreguide.com
When Pastor Elliott Robertson celebrates
25 years since his ordination as a minister,
he won’t be doing it alone. His entire flock
will celebrate with him. And in true Baltimore fashion, the flock will be dining at a
crab house.
Pastor Robertson, the guiding hand of
Martini Lutheran Church since 1997 and an
ordained minister since 1985, will celebrate
his milestone with a crab feast at Captain
James Landing on Saturday, July 17—and at
Martini, more formally, at a special service
on Sunday, July 18.
The Baltimore-born pastor was ordained
into the ministry after graduating with a
Master of Divinity Degree from Concordia Seminary in Ft Wayne, Indiana. Before
coming to Martini he served as assistant
pastor of Resurrection Lutheran Church in
Cary, N.C., and as pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chenango Bridge, N.Y..
But Baltimore, he said, always called him
back.
“I grew up near Herring Run, and it really
was a thrill to be able to come back here.
There aren’t many of us that get that blessing.”
He has returned to his rowhouse roots (“I
was born in one, and I grew up in one”) and
to the neighborhoods that he knew from his
youth.
He also finds it a joy to participate in the
lives of his congregation.
“At the church, we have seen a lot of people off to heaven, and we have seen a lot of
people join us. We realize we’ve been part
of a blessing in the lives of many, many people here. Eight years ago, our church started
a preschool. We saw that more people were
staying here to raise their children, rather
than moving away when they had children—
and we thought that this would be a way we
could contribute to the community.”
Robertson has a strong desire to serve the
greater church as well as his congregation. He has been instrumental in coordinating the Baltimore Servant event for several
years, bringing youth from around the Synod to work on various repair projects in city
neighborhoods and churches. Most recently,
the volunteers have been joining with Martini members to work on restoring the St.
Paul’s Cemetery, dedicated in 1854 in Druid
Hill Park (the Lutheran cemetery predates
the founding of the park).
He has also served as a circuit pastor
for Missouri Synod Lutheran Churches in

Over neighborhood objections, soup kitchen expansion hearing moves forward
by MARY HELEN SPRECHER
NEWSROOM@baltimoreguide.com
A city agency will hear plans for the expansion of the controversial Beans and Bread
homeless center, despite several community
associations’ attempts to postpone it.
The Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP) will hold
its hearing on July 13 as scheduled. The
Douglass Place Neighborhood Association
had asked CHAP to postpone the hearing
until a judge rules on the neighborhoods’ appeal of the city zoning board’s decision on
the expansion.
The St. Vincent DePaul Society, operators
of Beans and Bread, intends to double the
size of the center at Bond and Bank streets
in Fells Point and has suggested that the
expansion will keep people from lining up
around the block for meals, and that it will
not expand its clientele, merely improve services to them.
Douglass Place, through its president
Deirdre Hammer, says that it has heard that
line before.
The St. Vincent DePaul Society has had
troubled relations with neighboring com-

Baltimore, offering guidance to churches

outreach, supporting a Spanish-speaking
mission in another neighborhood
“I love being here and I love the neighborhood. South Baltimore -- it’s like a patchwork quilt. I wake up every day, and there
are different people to minister to.”
And, he adds, nothing, but nothing matches the thrill of being able to be a piece of that
quilt, and knowing that he’s home again.
“When I was returning home, coming
back here, I remember driving up Potee
street and looking out over the water — I
nearly wrecked a couple times while I was
driving because it was just so great to be
able to see that water again. The streets, the
houses, everything was the same.”

munities since it took over management
of Beans and Bread in 1986. Until then, it
had been a neighborhood soup kitchen with
many resident volunteers.
Three expansions later, the charity and
the surrounding neighborhoods are in court
over the fourth expansion.
“St. Vincent DePaul has never dealt directly and honestly with us,” says Hammer.
“The lines don’t go down the street anymore—they go around the block,” she adds.
At issue at the CHAP hearing is the entrance, which SVDP had moved around the
corner to Bank Street; CHAP told the society to move it back to Bond at a previous
meeting. CHAP also instructed the society
GAFFNEY’S

to keep the building line at least 12 feet from
neighboring buildings and to adjust the window and wall heights on the south side of the
property to assure privacy.
Hammer insists that the plans that SDVP
is set to show on July 13 are different from
the plans that were submitted to the Board of
Municipal and Zoning Appeals in September—the decision that is being appealed in
Circuit Court. (Guide, June 9). Besides, she
says, CHAP voted not to act until the Circuit
Court appeal was final.

Kathleen Kotarba, chief of CHAP, wrote
back that the agency had consulted with the
city Law Department and was advised to
proceed.
“More evidence that this thing is greased,”
says Hammer. She believes that the city
eased the way for the Beans and Bread expansion during former Mayor Sheila Dixon,
as a part of her 10-year plan to end homelessness in the city.
Kotarba did not return repeated calls asking for comment.

that many CCA members had accepted the
fact that the implementation of the new angle parking pattern would mean that certain
streets would have to be converted to oneway traffic patterns. Now, he adds, this isn’t
going to be the case.
“(The city has) asked us to do the North/
South streets only that are already one-way:
Lakewood, Kenwood and Potomac,” he
adds. “They want to do a more comprehensive study of Canton and talk to us about this
new concept called ‘Green Streets.’ We will
be all ears and I’m sure more than a little
perturbed at our next meeting with them.”
The meeting will be held on Thursday,
July 15, 6:30 p.m. at the Canton Community
Association office in the Broom Factory.
The meeting is open to the public.
The text of the memo from city planner
Mark R. Brown that went out last week on
the Canton list-serv, stated that the city’s
Department of Transportation “thinks it’s
best to hold off on any angle parking conversion which requires a traffic direction
change. This will accomplish two things; it
will buy us time to better plan more comprehensive street improvements as part
of the upcoming Canton Transportation/
Greening Plan, and it will reduce some of
the pushback surrounding such large-scale
parking/traffic changes.”
According to Brown, “the terms ‘green
streets’ and ‘sustainable streets’ are often used interchangeably. These are streets
which accommodate all users (walkers, bicyclists, transit, cars) equally, and often act
as outdoor living rooms instead of just a
conduit for automobiles.”

Inner Peace for the Inner Harbor!
Thornton’s Pub in Locust Point is a simple, unpretentious and comfortable corner
bar where the drinks are cold and generous and the service warm and inviting.
While many corner bars in gentrifying
neighborhoods have chased the trends and
become self-conscious “gastropubs” or
power-slamming frat boy bars—or both—
Thornton’s is content to be the neighborhood’s living room, the place to gather for
cold beer, hot food, the most current sports
on TV and the ability to catch up on the
neighborhood grapevine.
Thornton’s is an Irish pub, with Guinness
posters and flags scattered about, but Mr.
Boh takes pride of place on the bar mirror
and the food goes far beyond shepherd’s pie
and corned beef and cabbage. In fact we
saw neither on the menu when we visited
last week. On the other hand, shepherd’s pie
and CB&C are hardly summer fare.
But the summer garden soup was—it
was homemade, with plenty of vegetables
and cabbage floating in a steaming light
vegetable broth. The other soup of the day,
French onion soup, featured a very beefy
broth with sliced onion, rye croutons, and
the traditional cheesy top. A cup—actually
a generous portion served in a crock—of
soup will run you $4.95.
Thornton’s also serves a generous and
fresh spinach salad ($9.95) with hardboiled egg, bacon, and a sweet honeymustard vinaigrette on the side. The bluecheese dressing is perfect for this salad but
comes optional—you have to ask for it.
The YUMMY (yes, that’s the name of
the dish) sandwich ($7.95) is, in fact, appropriately named, a grillled, well-seasoned chicken breast with lettuce, lovely
ripe tomato, crisp bacon and provolone
served on a pretzel roll. The sandwich
comes with chips and a pickle, or you can
upgrade to fresh-cut fries or sweet-potato
fries for $2.
We decided to get a basket of sweetpotato fries ($4.95) to pass around the
table. They come with a sweet dipping
sauce laced with nutmeg and cinnamon;
it’s rather like dessert-in-a-basket.
Other dishes on the Friday specials list
were chicken fettucine Alfredo ($9.95),
sausage fettucine marinara ($9.95), and
a sandwich called “Chicken of the Sea,”
grilled chicken breast topped with a crabcake, provolone, and lettuce and served
on the pretzel bun ($13.95). Or you could
choose a soft-shell crab, crab fluff or fried
hard crab for $15.95-$16.95, served with

The Baltimore Guide is proud of its 83-year history of service to all its readers. However, due to increased demand
and space constraints, the Guide must change its Community Calendar policy. Effective July 14, 2010, the following
changes will go into effect. Notices for non-profit events that are open to the public, and which do not carry an admission or participation charge, will continue to be printed free of charge. However, for non-profit events that do charge
admission or a participation fee, the Guide will charge a nominal $20 fee for publication per week. These paid items
will be highlighted in the calendar and publication is guaranteed. There is a 50-word maximum for all material, and

Markakis again had himself a nice week,

his two starts and allowing only three runs
in 13.1 innings, plus had his best start of the

are tied for that honor. Considering seven
different pitchers have 10 wins or more,
three wins isn’t going to cut it (especially
when Yankee Andy Pettitte has 10 and is
NOT on the All Star team). Closer Alfredo
Simon has done a pretty nice job this year,
saving 10 games, but that total is only good
for 13th best in the AL.
So, that leaves us with Wiggy. On the year,
Wigginton is hitting only .246 but his 14 HR
and 43 RBI lead the team. Those numbers

AT THE MOVIES...
Ty Wigginton, come on down!! You’re the
latest player to benefit from the generosity of
Major League Baseball which must select at
least one player from every team to participate in the All Star Game.
Is Wiggy the most deserving Orange
Bird? Let’s take a look:
Nick Markakis leads the team with a respectable .307 average, but his paltry 4 HR
and 27 RBI wouldn’t give him the nod in an
already crowded American League outfield,
and the same can be said for Adam Jones,
who has been on fire of late. Phenom catcher
Matt Wieters is only hitting .236 on the season, and the AL already has Joe Mauer, Victor Martinez and John Buck.
When Luke Scott is on fire, he’s nearly
impossible to get out. Unfortunately for him
and the Orioles, those week - week and a
half streaks don’t make up for his monthly
disappearances.
Let’s take a look at their pitching staff,
shall we? Of the regular starters, Brian
Matusz has the lowest ERA at 4.56. Not an
All Star (at least not this year….). The team
high for wins is three. Five different Orioles
alone won’t get you on the All Star roster, but
when you combine those numbers with his
ability to play every position under the sun,
Baltimore now has their All Star.
So wear that American League uniform
proudly Ty, as we all know you will. Show
the rest of the baseball world what the Orioles are capable of!!
THE BALTIMORE GUIDE 13
hit a great pinch hit HR to help the Orioles
beat the Athletics, but as he rounded first
base he pulled his hamstring and is now on
the 15-day DL. Unfortunately, he was starting to heat up Luke Scott style, but now we
will have to wait until he heals.
Jeremy Guthrie, not so good.
Lasting only
four
innings
and giving up
six runs usually
lands you here,
as would giving up seven runs in only 1.2
IP, a la Frank Mata. And even though he is
the lone All-Star, Wigginton had a miserable week, hitting .042 on the week, going
1 for 24. Hopefully hanging out around
other All Stars will rub off on him and he
will catch fire soon.
That’s all for now! Hopefully everyone
enjoyed their holiday weekend!
P.S. - Mike Gonzalez…please take your
time coming back!!!!
