A Catholic College Preparatory School Annual Report 2009-2010 The St. Mary’s Ryken Fund Your gifts help The students of today Prepare to be the leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for investing in the students of St. Mary’s Ryken. From the President Dear Friends, There is no question that families make a sacrifice to send their students to Catholic school. And, there is no doubt of the powerful legacy of Catholic education in Southern Maryland and the contribution so many of our graduates have made in their communities. It is exciting as an educator to be working and helping to form the next generation of leaders. As I begin my 25th year of service to St. Mary’s Ryken, I am proud to be part of a Catholic community whose students take their gifts and achieve the extraordinary. The graduating class of 2010 demonstrated that a Xaverian, Catholic school community understands the commitment to serving their brothers and sisters. These students performed over 14,000 hours of service. Their academic successes led the class to receive almost $9 million in scholarships to the distinguished universities and colleges to which they were accepted. It is by working together as a Catholic community that our students are able to achieve these successes. The gifts and support you have provided to the St. Mary’s Ryken Fund and to the school’s endowments have helped us maintain a balanced budget, while growing our programs and enhancing the experience that all students receive on their journey of faith and academic growth. But, your gifts are only a part of what we need. Just like our students, I encourage you to offer your time. Become an active member of the St. Mary’s Ryken community by volunteering. A description of volunteer opportunities is posted on our website at www.smrhs.org/volunteer. As we begin this 30th year of St. Mary’s Ryken together, let us ask God to bestow His blessing on our school community. Sincerely, Mary Joy Hurlburt President Annual Report Fiscal Year 2010 Table of Contents 2 Gold Diplomas 3 Board of Directors 4 Advancement Office 6 Honor Roll of Donors begins 7-8 St. Francis Xavier Society 8 Memorial Gifts 12 SMR STEM 100 News 14 Class of 2010 Accolades 16 Scholarships & Endowments 18 Honor Roll continues 24 Alumni Giving by Class 27-28 Class Notes, In Memoriam Editor & Designer Denise Krumenacker Photography Candid Color Photography Anita Drury ’84 Taylor Gregg Jimmy Hurlburt ’93 LifeTouch Joan Stevens Carol Zenthoefer St. Mary’s Ryken Mission Statement St. Mary’s Ryken is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high school operated under the Xaverian Brothers’ sponsorship, committed to academic excellence and to individualized student growth in faith, moral probity, physical health, social demeanor and responsible citizenship. Edward Driscoll 2009-2010 Annual Report 3 Office of Advancement Dear Friends, Looking back over 2010, I can’t find enough words to describe the pride I have for this amazing school. Our faculty and our community are top notch. Every day, through their drive and determination, young men and women develop into the future leaders of our families, our churches and our communities. • Mark Ragland ’10 won a spot at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in California after winning at the county and regional levels. • Mason Short, Class of 2011, won the individual title in the WCAC golf championship. • The SMR Mock Trial team made it to the Final Four of the Maryland State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition in Annapolis. • The boys’ basketball team broke three school records and placed in the WCAC quarterfinals. • Joan Stevens received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching from the Archdiocese of Washington (ADW). These successes were a direct result of your support and others like you in the community. Your support to the St. Mary’s Ryken Fund was instrumental in providing need-based and merit-based scholarships, in ensuring our faculty received continuing education opportunities, and in creating special academic programs such as STEM, X-PAX and the Ryken Program. The success of our students and our school is a team effort. This Annual Report celebrates our team including our donors who make these successes possible. The Advancement Office, along with the students, faculty and administration, wish to express our gratitude to all of you who have joined this team. With the guidance of our Board of Directors, each day we make strides toward our vision of being one of the best Catholic, collegepreparatory schools on the East Coast. With each gift, large or small, we are leading the way. Please know that SMR is a most worthy recipient of your philanthropy, and that your gifts have been invested wisely and stewarded properly. As we set out on the 2011 school year, we face many challenges and many rewards. Yet, we find comfort knowing that we have been blessed with an incredible team of faculty and administrators, enthusiastic students, and caring alumni, parents and friends to help us lead the way to another successful year.
