SAAF Connection- October – December 2015
2015-2016 SAAF Board of Directors Honored to be Honored Miguel A. Cruz, President By Wendell Hicks, Executive Director Trish Kordas, 1st Vice President Photo by Scott Griessel, Creatista It’s not every day that local charitable nonprofits are recognized for all the hard work they do in the community. Honestly, very few of us are in this for accolades and acknowledgement. Most come to this line of work hoping to make a change or have a positive, long-lasting impact on our community and the world. We here at SAAF spend a great deal of time thinking about how to honor & recognize donors, collaborators, volunteers, & others to make them feel appreciated and assure them that their help is making a difference. That all said, it does feel nice to be on the receiving end of good news and SAAF has been lucky enough to be recognized not once, but twice, in the past 12 months by our local Chambers of Commerce. Wendell Hicks, Executive Director and Monique Vallery, Associate Director of Development at the 2015 Copper Cactus Awards Dinner. In December 2014, SAAF was invited to be a part of a special event held by the Tucson Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, & Transgender Chamber of Commerce. At the event, I accepted a beautiful piece of glass art, the President’s Award for Excellence. The award was given to SAAF in recognition of the support we offered Wingspan, formerly southern Arizona’s LGBT community center, when they were forced to close their doors earlier that year. Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation The Governing Board Juliet Yardy, 2nd Vice President Kathy Wells, Secretary/Treasurer Just last month, SAAF also received the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s Tucson Electric Power Charitable Non-Profit Business Copper Cactus Award. We were among some great nominated non-profits that night and I have to tell you how surprised I was to hear SAAF’s name called. Since this category is broken down into sub-categories based on the size of the organization’s operating budget, we were also pleased to be joined by Ben’s Bells, Handi-Dogs, and Aviva Children’s Services as other non-profit awardees. Mary Dorais Mimi Petro Alejandra Gerardo Arlette Stevens-Castaño Paul Guerrero Gwen Valentine Carla Johnson Mariah Weidner Emily Keidel Wendell Hicks, ex-officio These special recognitions are only possible because of people like you. There is nothing that SAAF accomplishes alone. Working with thousands of donors & volunteers, hundreds of community partners & collaborators, SAAF is able to do the work we do because of so many amazing people giving of their time, talent, and treasure. I’m the lucky one, accepting kudos on behalf of SAAF, but I know that I am accepting for legions who have been a part of this fight since the very beginning. At the end of the day, these awards are a testament to you and to everything we have been able to do, together, to change the landscape of stigma and shame in our community. I feel so proud to work for such an amazing organization and I hope you feel just as proud for the role you have played in getting us here. POSTHUMOUS HONORARY Board 375 S. Treasuring Our #MomentsThatMatter by Andrés Cano, Chair, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day-Tucson For the last 12 years, SAAF and close to a dozen community partners have come together to commemorate National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) on October 15th. If you want to share a photo of your #MomentsThatMatter, email us at nlaadtucson@gmail.com. The need to commemorate this day is great: in Pima County, 1 in 4 new cases of HIV come from Latino communities. Thursday, October 15th, 2015 I’m proud of our committee’s latest endeavor to prevent and treat HIV in southern Arizona’s Latino families. 5:30 p.m. Reception, hosted by COPE Community Services, Inc. We’re in the second year of our #MomentsThatMatter campaign, encouraging Latinos to reflect on their commitment to their loved ones and to take ownership of their health by getting tested and treated for HIV. Like most families, Latino families have lots of moments that matter: birthdays, graduations, quinceañeras- the list goes on. In the coming weeks, be on the lookout for these moments in our campaign’s bus benches and shelter displays, targeted advertisements in digital and print media, and listen in for our bilingual radio ads on Tejano 1600-AM and iHeartRadio.
