Dear Chamber Member:
Summer is finally here and that means the City of Westland is buzzing with excitement! Last month we celebrated our 50th anniversary as a city with a day-long celebration that was well attended and enjoyed by our many guests. We still have even
more in store this summer to celebrate this epic milestone.
On Friday, June 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the Westland Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an upscale social event called "Dine on the Vine". The event
will feature wine tasting and food pairing in the beautiful gallery and portico area
of Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd. It will be a strolling night that
encourages networking. This year’s major sponsor is Dr. Amanda Apfelblat of
Michigan Chiropractic and the event will be catered by Westland’s Jonna’s Market.
Admission is $30 and tickets can be purchased at the door or the Westland Chamber
of Commerce. Proceeds from the event will go to the Food Pantry of St. John’s
Episcopal Church.
On Thursday, June 16th we will be hosting a family friendly Kick Off to Summer
Splash Bash at Central City Park. The event starts at 5:00 p.m. with free hot dogs,
snacks, water and giveaways. There will also be kids safety activities and you can
check out the latest police and fire equipment. Admission to the very popular H20
Zone will also be free. At 7:00 p.m. attendees will be treated to a special outdoor
showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Westland's premier annual event, Blues, Brews and BBQ is quickly
approaching and will take place on August 4th and 5th. As in years
past, thousands will be treated to some of the Detroit Blues Society’s
most popular acts, amazing barbeque and a wide variety of Michigan’s most popular micro-brews. This year marks a special milestone
as Westland celebrates 50 years as a city. In commemoration of this
momentous event, this year’s Blues, Brews and Barbeque will be
bigger and better than ever before with Westland’s own American
Idol and country music star Josh Gracin headlining the event and
a historic firework celebration on saturday evening. Proceeds
from this event are donated back to area non-profits and community
groups who volunteer to help plan, organize and operate the event.
To date, over $150,000 has been donated to these local organizations.
As you determine what your annual community outreach activities
and sponsorships will be, we humbly as that you consider becoming
a part of this fun and charitable event. As a sponsor, your business
will be promoted in a comprehensive marketing strategy that will be
featured on radio, TV and creative print advertisements and signage
before and during the event.
Westland is home to countless talented and qualified individuals
who may be seeking new employment. If your business is looking
to tap into this talent pool, please consider sharing your job openings
on our Westland Works page on the city’s website. Simply contact
my office with the description of the position and we will be sure to
post it.
Now that the weather has finally warmed for the season, many of
you will be dusting off those golf shoes. Every week we feature Monday Madness at the Westland Golf Course. It is a lunch and a 9-hole
game special. You can always find out more by visiting our website
at www.cityofwestland.com or calling the golf course at (734) 7216660.
In a special partnership with the Westland Chamber of Commerce,
the All American Farmers and Artisans Market is back for the season
and will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. every Thursday in the new, beautiful
Farmer's Marketplace, located in Central City Park. This is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their farm fresh
produce directly to the public.
I encourage you to stay connected with us and abreast of what is
going on in Westland. Visit our website regularly and check out our
calendar of events. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter and always
feel free to contact my office if I can ever be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
William R. Wild, Mayor

Bruises the Bard!
It is funny! Its kooky! And sometimes bawdy.
Building from a witty start to a raucous, hilarious ending, The Complete Works of William
Shakespeare (Abridged) offers a joyful sendup of all the plays of the most well-known
playwright in the English language. Playing on
the recognition that the audience knows of
some of the plays and assuming that the language may have often been difficult to engage
with for many, this play overcomes the bombastic in the Bard by ridiculing some of the
most famous characters and stories in literature.
The first half runs through 36 of Shakespeare’s plays, at about 2 minutes a play. The
second half is the funniest production of Hamlet you are ever likely to see. The actors provide one of the most energetic and
comic stage performances possible. And they involve the audience in ways that give a new dimension to the concept of audience
participation. While you may associate the works of William Shakespeare with a certain degree of class, formality, and sophistication, this play refreshingly and unsurprisingly does not. Director Len Fisher hammers away at the tongue-in-cheek
material, creating a fun, coarse and mostly silly show. In it, the actors move at a frenetic pace, relaying the gist of each play
by any means necessary. Stuffed animals, interpretive dance, and outright irreverence are just a few zany examples. The performances go from outright wacky to farcical. The Capulets and Montagues duke it out in a cat fight, Othello is portrayed in
a hip hop rap, and Macbeth is complete with kilts, golf clubs, and heavy drinking. Those with a wry sense of humor will enjoy
the sarcasm, contemporary references, as well as the in-your-face banter that defines this show.
Originally written for a three person cast, Fisher has cast 10 actors in an attempt to ad dimension to the production. “ We
have a significant number of costume changes and an overabundance of props,” explain Fisher. “The script keeps everyone
busy and keeps the audience guessing about what’s next,” he added.
The play opens May 27 and runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for three weekends. Inspire Theatre is located in the Westland
Center For the Arts on Warren Rd in Westland. Tickets are available at inspiretheatre.ticketleap.com. More information can
be found at inspiretheatre.com or by calling 734-751-7057.
