Whitesboro High School 6000 State Route 291 Marcy, NY 13403-3031 315.266.3200 http://www.wboro.org/ . Jeffrey Kuhn, Principal Mark Frye, Assistant Principal — Grades 11-12 Christopher O’Neil, Assistant Principal — Grades 9-10 Home of the Warriors January - February 2015 Home of the Warriors Communication - One of the Keys to Success In our ongoing effort to continually improve student achievement, communication is imperative. While the high school administration continually encourages all staff to communicate with parents through verbal and/or written communication, we invite parents to initiate conversations about their child with their child’s teachers. Whether there is a concern to discuss or the desire to ascertain what your child is learning in his/her classes, we encourage you to call or email the person most directly involved, your child’s teacher. Progress reports and report cards are important indicators as to how your child is performing in each class. However, we want to keep open the lines of communication in an ongoing effort to ensure that all students are successful in all subject areas. You do not need to wait until these reports are distributed. Communicate with your child’s teachers regularly to determine areas of success and weakness in order to help your child to continue his/her success or improve in a particular area. With the busy lives that we all lead today, it can be easy to miss a phone call or forget to send an email to obtain information on your child’s education. Nevertheless, it is evident that students have better attendance, fewer discipline issues, and achieve higher grades in school when parents are involved. In order to ensure that all of our students are successful, parental involvement is essential. How Much Sleep Do Students Need? Many U. S. students of all ages do not get enough sleep. About 85 percent of adolescents are reported to be mildly sleep deprived, and 10-40 percent may be significantly sleep deprived. (Dahl & Lewin, 2002) Several changes in adolescence contribute to sleep deprivation. First, adolescents wake up more easily during the night than younger children (Carskadon & Dement, 2000). Second, adolescents stay up late for sports, homework, and jobs. Third, adolescents easily shift to a “night-owl” pattern. From ages 3 to 17, children tend to get up at the same time, about 7 a.m., but adolescents stay up about two and one-half hours later than young children (Snell, Adam, & Duncan, 2007). then sleep excessively on weekends (Ohayon, Carskadon, Guilleminault, & Vitiello, 2004). When they go to bed later on weekends than on school nights, they experience a “jetlag” effect each week, and their school achievement may suffer. Research has shown that high school students who earn As or Bs tend to have a small discrepancy between school-night and weekend bedtimes. In contrast, students with a discrepancy of two hours or more are likely to earn lower grades (Wolfson & Carskadon, 1998). Given the evidence above, improving student’s sleep should be of great concern to educators. Indeed, it may be among the lowest-cost approaches to improving student learning. Adolescents often get less sleep on school nights and WHITESBORO HIGH SCHOOL “A Model of Excellence” NYSPHSAA & Section III Scholar Athletes Final Fall 2014 Rankings The NYSPHSAA and Section III released the fall NYS Scholar Athlete teams for the 2014 sport season.
