The Slayton Arboretum 2016 PROGRAMS HILLSDALE COLLEGE • HILLSDALE, MICHIGAN Message from the Director Witch Hazel Restoration HELLO FROM HILLSDALE COLLEGE CAMPUS! The unseasonably warm winter has the Arb staff eager to begin another season of programs and events. Please mark your calendars for the Arb’s upcoming events. In particular, please note the earlier date for the Annual Plant Sale Fundraiser. We know that frost can be problematic in early May; however, this was the best date given scheduling conflicts in the spring. We look forward to seeing you there! This has been another special year for Slayton Arboretum. We began to pursue the goals outlined in the new ten-year Master Plan, and with the assistance of dedicated Hillsdale College students, we made outstanding progress in restoring the witch-hazel collection. You will enjoy reading Laurie’s update, as she directed volunteers and students from her Environmental Stewardship class in clearing invasive honeysuckle to prepare the area for new plantings this spring. The photo collage below shows an impressive transformation, and I am grateful to both Laurie and Richard for their leadership in teaching students how to proceed properly with a restoration project. The young men of Delta Tau Delta fraternity volunteered their efforts in helping to clean and maintain the waterfall hillside. Laurie’s students also helped to replant some shrubs that were lost in last year’s harsh winter. Visitors arrive daily, and their first stop is often at the base of the waterfall to enjoy the views. We continue to work through protocols for seasonal maintenance to keep this area pristine, and we welcome any additional support to cover these costs. As always, thank you for your continued patronage of Slayton Arboretum and the neighboring Children’s Garden. We had some of the most generous end-of-year gifts in recent history, and the Arb staff and I are so thankful for your generosity in supporting the mission of Slayton Arboretum. THIS PAST YEAR AT THE ARBORETUM was an exciting one, as we started restoring the witch hazel collection. The collection, started with a donation from Hillsdale High School Friends of the Arboretum, dates back to 1950. It is located along a path winding from the lower level of the Arboretum to the top of the ridge behind McIntyre Residence. Over the summer, we removed invasive and overgrown shrubs and trees that were blocking the growth of the witch hazels. During the fall semester, students in a new Environmental Stewardship seminar did research and planning for the restoration. These students, along with members of the Conservation Club, worked to set the project in motion by testing the soil, mapping the site, transplanting seedlings, removing invasive honeysuckle shrubs, surveying signs of deer movement through the area, and building a compost pile to provide tailor-made soil amendments. Several varieties of trees and shrubs were planted, including three new witch hazel specimens, a fothergilla shrub, and a sweetgum tree.Additional plantings are planned to complement the witch hazels and provide year-round interest. Future projects include construction of a rain garden to buffer the hillside from runoff from the service road, creation of a database of plantings and their progress, and efforts to contain and control invasive species and deer browsing. We are offering a tour of this newly restored area on September 24—please join us then to see and hear about the ongoing development of this Slayton Arboretum gem. I’ve been blogging about the Stewardship class and the restoration at lpinkmountain. blogspot.com. Gratitude and thanks to the volunteers and donors who made this project possible! Best wishes, Best wishes as we welcome the signs of spring, Ranessa L.
