African Doctoral
Academy launched
Stellenbosch
University
(SU) launched its African Doctoral
Academy (ADA) in the Wallenberg
Research Centre on Wednesday 26
January.
The aim of the ADA is to
promote human development and
to counter the decline of graduate
scholarship in Africa by delivering first rate doctoral graduates,
especially in the humanities and
social sciences. The institution
aims to become the best of its kind
in Africa.
The Academy will support
doctoral students by providing
them with training courses in
theory, methodology and scholarship. The ADA also caters to staff
by offering courses on supervision
and the management of research
and postgraduate studies.
The Academy forms part of the
University’s HOPE project. The
ADA aims to bring about tangible
change within communities in
South Africa and the rest of the
continent by following a sciencefor-society approach.

STUDENTS STAND UP On Thursday 21 October 2010, students marched to Admin B to raise their concern regarding the affordability of higher education at all higher education institutions in South Africa, and especially
at Stellenbosch. When the crowd reached Admin B, prof Russel Botman, rector and vice-chancellor: Stellenbosch University, signed an agreement stating that the university will spend money more effectively, reduce
expenses and increase financial support for needy students.

Accommodation concerns
E
very year approximately 20
students are accepted to study
at Stellenbosch University (SU)
only to arrive on campus during the
registarion period to find that they do
not have university accommodation.
According to mr Pieter Kloppers,
director:
Centre
for
Student
Communities, the majority of these
students are first generation and black
students.
Cathy Wood, SRC member:
Transformation and First Generation
Students, estimates that this year
between 60 and 90 students found
themselves in this position.
Wood claims she was warned at
the end of 2010 that the university
would face this problem again during
the welcoming week in 2011. Wood
and her committee stepped in to help
students with a range of problems

Wood believes that the root of the
problem could lie with communication
as well as with the high expectations
of prospective students.
“A letter that prospective first years
receive for provisional university
admittance can often be misleading.”
She adds that first generation
students are students who do not have
parents that have studied at university
level.
“This would mean that they are not
as equipped with the relevant information,” Wood said.
Wood feels that the university is becoming more aware of this
problem.
“I think that there have been some
trial and error attempts to work on
these problems. There is some positive
feedback on successes.
“I do, however, believe that this
unique situation calls for even greater
study and understanding to improve
solutions,” Wood added.

Standards for welcoming programme ‘higher’
Seven incidents reported

S
even violations of the rules of
the Welcoming Programme
were reported during this past
welcoming week.
Mr Pieter Kloppers, director: Centre
for Student Communities, says he had
to have conversations with a number
of residences regarding the rules for
the Welcoming Week. These residences include Eendrag, Hippokrates
and Majuba.
Many residences have denied that
there were any problems during the
Welcoming Week.
Angus Byers, prim: Hippokrates,
admitted that there had been an
incident at Hippokrates, but that the
problem had been addressed and that
positive changes were in progress.
Similarly, André Basson, prim:
Majuba, said: “There was an isolated
incident where three students [...]
did not treat the first years according
to the values of Majuba or the university. It impeded the constructive
welcome that we as a house and a
HK wanted to give. The students will
be summoned before the university’s
central disciplinary committee that
will take the matter further.”
According to Kloppers, the reason
for the high number of reported
incidents is not a deterioration in the
treatment of first year students but
rather that the standards of monitors
and student leaders is higher than in
previous years.
“The HKs are prepared to cooperate with us. However, most of the
problems lie with senior students,”
Kloppers said.
Helet Botha, head monitor, claims
that there were a few residences
that took disciplinary action against
specific individuals themselves and
that the monitors were in no way
involved in the reporting of incidents.
In these cases, the incidents were
reported and dealt with by the HK and
the residence heads.
Lloyd Blake, deputy chair: SRC,
comments, “I, personally, feel that
many houses are eager to go in a new,
different direction, but that they are
simply unsure of the unknown which
they will encounter and the results
which may come of this change. The
houses have the full support of the university. All they need to do is take the
first step.”

Jade Bushby, De Wet se vriend,
beskryf haar as ’n pragtige persoon.
“Dit was altyd lekker om by haar
te wees. Sy was plat op die aarde,”
voeg hy by.
Bushby beskryf haar verder as
ontsteld was.

Volgens mnr Bertie Brandsen,
streeksbevelvoerder:
Stellenbosse
Brand- en Veiligheidsdienste, het die
brand vermoedelik in die dak begin,
maar die amptelike oorsaak is steeds
onbekend.
Die Wilcocks-gebou het die
Geskiedenisen
Sielkundedepartemente, sowel as die Nagraadse
en Internasionale Kantoor, gehuisves.
“Ons het hoofsaaklik dokumentasie,
navorsing en boeke verloor,” sê prof
Albert Grundlingh, hoof: Geskiedenisdepartement. Hy vertel dat baie
dosente boeke verloor het wat hulle
oor jare versamel het.
Prof Sandra Swart, dosent:
Geskiedenisdepartement, is tans besig
“Juis
in
die
Geskiedenisdepartement het sekere boeke ’n
sentimentele waarde en baie van
hierdie boeke is onvervangbaar,” het
prof Grundlingh gesê.
Brandsen skryf die ontstaan van
die brand aan ’n tekort aan brandmure
toe.
“[Wilcocks] is gebou voor die
nasionale bouregulasies van krag
gekom het. Die gebou het dus nie die
vereiste brandmure op ’n basis van
elke 300 vierkante meter gehad nie,”
voeg Brandsen by.
Daar is tans ’n versekeringsaak
onderweg om te bepaal hoe bestand
die Wilcocksgebou teen ’n brand was.
Daar word beraam dat herstelwerk
aan die gebou teen Oktober voltooi sal
wees.
“Die nuwe gebou gaan heeltemal
anders lyk,” het prof Grundlingh gesê.
Planne word beraam om die onderrigmedia terselfdertyd op te gradeer.
“Ons is baie tevrede met hoe
die universiteitsbestuur die situasie
hanteer het,” sê prof Grundlingh.
“Hulle het vinnig en effektief
gereageer met ’n goed-gekoördineerde plan om nuwe lokale aan ons
te verskaf.”
Hy noem ook dat ander kollegas
baie ondersteunend was.
Brandsen
meen
dat
sulke
gebeurtenisse in die toekoms vermy
kan word.
“Dit kan vermy word deur die
regte brandbestrydingstoerusting aan
elke gebou te voorsien en sodoende
te verseker dat [die geboue] te alle
tye aan die nasionale bouregulasies
voldoen,” noem Brandsen.
Prof Grundlingh sê dat studente
deur middel van kennisgewings
ingelig sal word waarheen hul klasse
verskuif.
Die Kruiskerk, Natuurweten
skappegebou en die Ou Hoofgebou is
van die geboue wat tydelik gebruik sal
word.

sy, saam met mnr Johan Kleynhans,
dienstebestuurder: Behuising, elke
tweede dag ’n LLL-huis besoek
om vas te stel watter probleme nog

In Oktober 2010 het dr Munita

’n Hoofstudent, wat verkies om
anoniem te bly, het bevestig dat
probleme vinniger aangespreek word
sedert Dunn aangestel is.

instandhouding en kommunikasiegapings,” voeg Maré by.

lewer nie,” voeg sy by.
Van der Merwe noem dat ’n

‘Aspiring solo adventurer’ undertakes two-month expedition
SU student cycles through SA for charity
WHEEL OF FORTUNE Daniel Vivier cycled 3 442 kilometres from the
northernmost to the southernmost part of South Africa. Photos: SUPPLIED
sarah otto
D
aniel Vivier, a second year BSc
Conservation Ecology student,
recently undertook a cycling
challenge through South Africa.
He is the first individual to cycle
unassisted from the northernmost
point of South Africa to the southernmost tip, and then to continue cycling
to Cape Town.
“I wanted to see and experience
as much of South Africa as I possibly
could. I wanted to challenge myself
to do something that no one has ever
done before,” he said.
“I am also an aspiring solo
adventurer. This was my first attempt
at a real expedition,” he adds.
Vivier started his expedition on
28 November 2010 at Beitbridge on
the Zimbabwean border. This is the
most northern point of South Africa.
From there, he travelled southwards,

mostly on nationals roads, and through
Swaziland, until he reached the most
southern part of South Africa, Cape
Agulhas.
From there, he continued along
the coast back to Cape Town where
he was welcomed back at the V&A
Waterfront on 17 January 2011.
“The whole trip took 169 hours
and covered 3 442 kilometres,” Vivier
said.
The trip also raised money for the
Give Me a Chance Foundation. This
foundation was started by Alluvia
Specialist Winery and Guest House and
funds the education of underprivileged
children
from
the
Kylemore
community in the Helshoogte Pass.
Vivier was not a cyclist before this
trip and, therefore, he had to change
his exercise regime.
“I just tried to get my muscles used
to the kind of strain they would receive
from long stretches of cycling, by
doing spinning classes twice a week
for two months,” he said.
“I also made sure that my cardiovascular fitness was at a reasonable
level so as not to make the transition
from normal life to cycling every day
so difficult,” he continues.
He said that the two highlights
of the trip “were starting off from
Beitbridge, with such a great adventure
awaiting me, and when I got to see my
family after forty days on the road.”
However, he mentions, it was
quite challenging to get back into his
cycling clothes every day knowing he
had to cycle more than 100 kilometres,
day after day.
“The start of the day was always
the worst, but from then on it was
great. Having fulfilled my desire to
complete this trip [gives me] a great
feeling of accomplishment.
“This challenge is only a stepping
stone to greater things and hopefully
I can push my limits a bit further each
time,” Vivier said.

Groen Roete
Probeer om nooit alleen te loop nie,
en loop vinnig. Maak gebruik van die
Groen Roete. Moet eerder nie in die
donker of in verlate areas stap nie.
Hou ’n flits, persoonlike alarm of
pepersproei byderhand. Pepersproei
is by die SR-kantoor of by die USBD
beskikbaar.
Pendeldiens
Sekuriteitsbeamptes kan studente
vergesel. Hierdie diens is tussen 20:00
en 05:00 gedurende die somermaande
beskikbaar.
Studente word daaraan herinner
om ook van die pendeldiens, wat saans
vanaf 22:00 beskikbaar is, gebruik te
maak.
By die kitsbank
As jy by die kitsbank geld trek,
maak seker daar is ’n toeloop van
mense. Bêre jou geld vóór jy van die
masjien weg beweeg.
Parkering
Parkeer jou voertuig in ’n goedbeligte area en so naby moontlik aan
jou werkplek of studeerarea. Vermy dit
om in afgesonderde areas te parkeer.
Koshuis/woonstel/huis
Moenie vreemdelinge toegang tot
jou koshuis gee nie. As hulle nie ’n
toegangskaart het nie, kan hulle nie
die koshuis betree nie.
Wanneer jy jou koshuiskamer of
woonstel verlaat, sluit die deur en
maak die vensters toe.
Voor jy in die aand gaan slaap,
kontroleer dat alle deure en vensters
toe en gesluit is. Sluit waardevolle
items, soos ’n beursie, in ’n kas toe.
Leer jou bure ken
Moenie groot bedrae kontant in
jou kamer hou nie. Belê in ’n goeie
hangslot. Kombinasie-slotte word die
meeste gedurende inbrake geteiken.
Op jou fiets
Moenie jou fiets in afgesonderde areas laat nie. Belê in ’n goeie
fietsslot.
stukkend geslaan.
Wees bedag op mense wat
doelloos naby jou koshuis of voertuig
ronddwaal.
Pasop vir jou drankie
Hoe meer alkohol jy inneem, hoe
minder is jy bewus van die omgewing
om jou.
Moenie drankies van vreemdelinge
aanvaar nie. Hou te alle tye wag oor
jou drankies.
Onthou om in ’n groep uit te
gaan. Besluit ook vooraf op ’n
aangewese bestuurder vir die
reis huis toe.
Rapporteer dit dadelik
Rapporteer enige verdagte persone
onmiddellik aan die USBD by 021 808
2330.
Wees bedag
As jy agtervolg word,
verander van rigting en skakel
onmiddellik die USBD of die
SAPD. Wees bewus van mense
buite die SS of biblioteek. As
jy onveilig voel, is die USBD
bereid om jou na jou voertuig te
vergesel. Dra altyd jou selfoon
by jou.
Hou jou handsak verkieslik
styf teen jou lyf vas. Moet egter
nie oortreders onnodig teësit
wanneer jou handsak gesteel
word nie.

Try the alternative
I
t’s summer time and students
rocked out in their best gear
at RAG. During the last day of
RAG, a few interesting trends were
spotted at De Bras.
Amongst the skulls and crossbones on T-shirts, Bianca prefers a
gun, ribbon and lace garter tattooed
around her thigh. She wears bright
orange nail polish in contrast to her
dark look.
Lezanne looks cool in her
crocheted dress and adds something
alternative with her antique leatherand-metal belt.
Luné purrs as we photograph her
embellished leopard ring, which
glares in the sun and sets the grunge
look alight.
Zinon laughs as he shows off his
lion tattoo. His hair is tied back with
a Rasta ribbon, matching the colours
in the tattoo’s flag. His friend Mark
has a tiny skull placed at the temple
of his blood red sunglasses, which
adds an alternative edge to a plain
pair of wayfarers.
Although camera-shy, the boys
loved the attention their outfits drew
from the giggling girls around them.
Other guys preferred long messy
hair, beards and the oh-so-cool
aviators, which add instant rock star
to anyone’s outfit.
Top alternative rock must-haves:
1. Old-school styled leather jacket
2. Boots (whether ankle, knee-high, army-style or lace -ups, they are a must)
3. Cardigans and layered jerseys
4.Tons of layered bracelets, necklaces and rings
5.Skinny jeans + leggings = jeggings (must-have for 2011)
6.White vests/wife-beaters and T-shirts that represent your unique interests
7.Scissors, pins, belts, patches, badges… Anything that adds individuality to your look!

Anything goes in this Modern Family
robert kaden
For the first time in four years,
the coveted Emmy for Outstanding
Comedy Series was not awarded to
the long-standing favourite 30 Rock,
but to the new series Modern Family.
The show is shot in the mockumentary
style and follows the lives of three
families.
Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) is a
middle-aged divorcé who recently
married a much younger and very
sexy Columbian woman named Gloria
(Sofía Vergara), and is helping her to
raise her son Manny (Rico Rodriguez).
Manny and Jay share a love-hate
relationship as stepfather and son.
Jay has two children from his
previous marriage. His daughter Claire
(Julie Bowen), the ideal housewife and
ultimate supermom, is married to Phil
Dunphy (Ty Burrell), the very “cool”
but nerdy father.
Jay’s son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler
Ferguson) and his partner Cameron
Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) are the proud
parents of an adopted Vietnamese
baby.
Modern Family’s greatest strength
is, in fact, the way in which it satirises
these everyday events and the intimate
details of family life.
Most
significantly,
however,
Modern Family shows us how we live
now and that – as the show’s tagline,
“One big (straight, gay, multi-cultural,
traditional) happy family”, suggests
– there are several different possible
takes on family life.

T

is the perfect end to an always
exciting week of Trollies,
Vensters and Vlotte. This year the lineup included a very diverse combination
of music, like Die Einstes, Foto na
Dans and Kurt Darren as well as
English bands like The Plastics, The
Rudimentals and Flash Republic.
Your band drew quite the crowd
today. How did you experience your
first gig in Stellenbosch?
Die Uwe
Die Uwe, a local Afrikaans rock
band, opened the show with a tight
and energetic set.
Although the crowd was just
starting to fill up, it didn’t stop them
from impressing audience members
with the amount of passion they pour
into their performance.
“It was amazing. What an awesome
crowd. And this is such a wicked town

from the audience for our first show
in Stellenbosch was just great. We
couldn’t have asked for anything better.
We definitely want to come back and

and party with you guys”.
How long have you been playing
together?

Swanepoel on bass guitar and Stephan
Rabie on drums.
As one of the Afrikaans bands to
perform today, how does it feel to
be sharing the stage with other big
Afrikaans acts like Kurt Darren?
Where do you get your name
from?
“Pretty cool. We’re proud to
be jamming alongside Kurt. He
definitely knows his market and his
professionalism is something to aspire
to. He really rocks his genre.”
Kurt Darren
This was a sentiment shared by
Kurt Darren who makes a regular
appearance at the Varsity Cup.
Three minutes into his line-up,
Kurt let loose with a definite crowd
favourite, “Kaptein”, that drew
everyone from the beer tents. He
stopped briefly to promise a young
supporter, “I’ll sing ‘Loslappie’ for
you now, my friend”, and continued to
twist, jump and head-bang away. This
is what he had to say about the events
of the day:
“Roan and I (Jacques) started
a band when we were still in high
school, which was fairly established
by the time we came to varsity. Wouter
was a classmate that we brought in to
take on the vocals.
Our new single, “In die Lig van
die Maan”, will be released soon and
we’re playing a gig with Joint State on
“It’s very random but it comes from
Lem Motlow who was Jack Daniel’s
cousin. We renamed it because noone would find our band when they
searched for “Lem Motlow”. They
would only find the person. We
actually re-launched the name today”.
Describe your experience playing

the new album, Oos, Wes, Tuis Bes,
but ‘Kaptein’ will always feature
along with other upbeat songs. I also
take into account what time of day my
performance is. I sing at noon – so
everyone is still fresh on their feet and
in the mood to dance”.
Is there a specific line-up you
prepared for the Stellenbosch crowd
today?
Do you find that the Afrikaans
students enjoy your songs more
or would this assumption be too
general?
“Yes definitely. Students are a
different crowd to sing to. They
obviously enjoy the party songs more.
I’ll be singing some new songs from

the genres of music, but the fact that
there are big names in both English
and Afrikaans.
The language policy at the
university is always a current issue
on campus, so it was really nice to
see Flash Republic collaborate with
Foto na Dans and have you play
“Afrikaans”.
“Thank you, we try to jump on
stage with them whenever we get the
chance. This was the perfect setting
to do that. We are also two bands that
are not afraid to cross that language
barrier. We all hang out together
and get on like a house on fire. And
our whole song was just really about
crossing that barrier and me saying
“Ek wil sing in Afrikaans, staan op en
dans!”
Lemolow
Lemolow is a band fairly new to the
game and consists of Emma de Goede
on vocals and piano, Gerrit Matthee
on guitar, Hamman Schoonwinkel on
You’re sharing the line-up with
some very big names in the industry:
Kurt Darren, Foto na Dans, Flash
Republic. Are you excited?
“We’re very excited to see Foto
na Dans and Flash Republic perform.
They influence our music a lot. Kurt
Darren was awesome. We never
expected to see him here and he really
rocked out. He definitely put on a
show”.
Flash Republic
Frontwoman of arguably the
biggest English band to grace the stage
Tamara Dey from Flash Republic
greeted the crowd with a very local,
“Aweh, julle is awesome,” before
blowing everyone away for 45 minutes
with a setlist that ranged from old and
well-known favourites like “Twister”
Goodluck
Like the band in Titanic, Goodluck
kept playing until the absolute final
end with a powerful yet short set.
The local authorities interrupted
their performance and they were forced
to stop only fifteen minutes into their
set-list because of noise restrictions,
thereby providing a controversial and
oddly memorable ending to the night.
The ATKV RAG festival 2011 was
everything one expected from this
always exciting event.
The sun was hot, the beer was cold
and whether you wanted to see Kurt
Darren going “Af Af Af” or listen to
Willem Welsyn rave about the festival
being “pretty awesome, even though
it’s very hot and I’m sweating like
a lesbian”, there was something for
everyone to enjoy.

Chaos on the Sun is besig om
Hulle

T
he Pixies, a band from Boston in the USA, consists of Black Francis (vocals, guitar), Joey
Santiago (guitar), Kim Deal (bass guitar, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). This alternative
rock band released a hit song in 1988 called “Where Is My Mind” that skyrocketed them to
stardom. Today, “Where Is My Mind” is still one of their most famous songs and featured on the
original soundtrack of Fightclub in 1999. Die Matie is giving you the chance to learn the basic chords
of this hit song.
1
1. To play an E chord: place index finger on D string
(fourth from top) on first fret, middle finger on B string
(second from top) on second fret and ring finger on G
string (third from top) also on second fret.
2
2. To play a C#m chord: Use index finger to barre
strings by placing it on fourth fret across all strings (to
bridge sound), place ring finger on G string on sixth
fret and pinky on D string (also on sixth fret).
3
3. To play a G# chord: Place index finger on fourth
fret, middle finger on A string (second from bottom) on
fifth fret, ring finger on G string (third from top) on sixth
fret and pinky on D string on sixth fret.
4. To play an A chord: Place index finger on G string
(third from top), middle finger on D string (fourth from
top) and ring finger on A string (second from bottom) –
all on second fret.

Anika Marais
Quentin Tarantino het reeds in 1994
met sy aweregse meesterstuk Pulp
Fiction (met John Travolta, Samuel L
Jackson en Uma Thurman) vorendag
gekom.
Hierdie film het kykers verras met
die innoverende en unieke manier
waarop ’n skynbaar eenvoudige storie
verwissel.
In plaas daarvan om ’n storielyn
te ontwikkel op die argetipes van die
tipe karakters wat ’n mens in Pulp
Fiction verwag – die bendebaas, die
huurmoordenaar, die verraaier en
natuurlik die damsel in distress –
verras hierdie film met skerpsinnige
dialoog. Net soos sy karakters is die
film self ook ’n vermenging van etlike
genres. Pulp Fiction kan voorwaar
beskou word as een van die eerste
werklike postmoderne films.
Die droë humor, absurde situasies
en bowenal uitstekende dialoog maak
hierdie film ’n moet-sien.
Burlesque-klub in Los Angeles besit.
As gevolg van finansiële probleme is
die toekoms van Burlesque onseker.
Alie (Christina Aguilera), ’n
kelnerin van ’n klein dorpie in Iowa,
beïndruk Tess met haar stem en blaas
nuwe lewe in dié klub se vertonings.
Burlesque is ’n interessante
kombinasie Chicago en Mamma
Mia. Dié musiekblyspel is seksueel
gewaagd, maar handhaaf deurgaans ’n
feel-good-atmosfeer.
Ten spyte van negatiewe resensies
wat die rondte doen, is die film
by vanjaar se Golden Globes vir
beste komedie of musiekblyspel
genomineer.
Diane Warren het met die goue
standbeeldjie weggestap toe haar “You
haven’t seen the last of me” as beste
oorspronklike lied aangewys is.
Burlesque lok beslis teenstrydige
opinies uit: Dit is ook genomineer
vir die jaarlikse Golden Raspberry
Awards (of die Razzies) wat as die
anti-Oscars beskryf word en aan die
jaar se swakste flieks toegeken word.

L
ike failing financial accounting, braaiing on weekends
(and during the week), buying enough Neelsie coffee
to power the Gautrain and enjoying series marathons,
driving while intoxicated has become one of Matieland’s
favourite pastimes.
Bored students seem to break the monotony of their
attempts at obtaining a degree by risking their own and others’
lives by drinking and driving.
Whether this is seen as the macho thing to do or whether
Stellenbosch students – part of the top 5% of the country’s
population in terms of education – simply exhibit the same
kind of half-witted reasoning as the rest of the population when
it comes to safety and alcohol, it is unsettling to remember that
drunk driving is a very real problem in South Africa.
More than 3 000 people were arrested for driving under
the influence on South African roads during the recent festive
season alone.
Coupled with the country’s abysmal road death record, this
should be enough reason for us to be more responsible when
braving local roads.
In an attempt to address the problem on campus, the SU
RAG committee has suggested that student perpetrators’
names be published on a board in the Neelsie. They have apparently taken their lead from a plan to name and shame drunk
drivers in KwaZulu-Natal.
While this certainly shows an eagerness to tackle one of
campus’s biggest problems, the legal ramifications may make
the project impracticable.
According to legal practitioners, naming offenders who
have already been found guilty is not a problem, but publishing the names of those who have simply been accused could
be a violation of the alleged offenders’ rights.

Veiliger met USBD in die rondte
Ek wil graag my dankbaarheid teenoor die
Universiteit Stellenbosch Beskermingsdienste
(USBD) uitspreek. Vandat ek in middel Januarie
Eerstens was daar nie vir my woonstel sleutels
nie. My woonstel vorm deel van een van die US se
studentehuise.
my én my woonstelmaat elk ’n bos sleutels gekry
Toe ek
uiteindelik by my woonstel aankom, lig my ontstoke
woonstelmaat my in dat daar boonop ’n inbreker in
ons woonstel was.
’n paar dae later my sleutels in my kar toegesluit.
my sleutels uit my motor gehaal.
Welgedaan, USBD! Ek voel veilig wetende dat
ek altyd op jul knoppie kan druk.
– ONGELUKSVOëL
Koshuiskos toe nié so goedkoop
Almal kla oor koshuiskos.
– was
NAAM:
Hoeveel administrasie is daarby betrokke om my
kaart weer by my ou koshuis te aktiveer en my op
die etestelsel te laai? Sal daar ’n stormloop studente
wees wat skielik by hul ou koshuise wil gaan eet en
die dag-tot-dag werking van Admin A sal versteur
indien dit bekostigbaar is? Waarom so baie betaal
Then there is also the very real possibility that students
would simply see this kind of practice as a challenge to see
who can drive the fastest while under the influence.
Despite the efforts of those who want to force students to
take responsibility for their actions, it would seem that things
can only change when SU students’ mindsets change.
Perhaps the national campaign to instill fear in the hearts
of those who take the consequences of driving under the
influence lightly, should be intensified on campuses around
the country.
A television advertisement, which used jailbirds to scare
potential drunk drivers into behaving responsibly, caused a
considerable degree of controversy last year.
Would students not be more willing to change their ways if
they were made aware of the fact that one remarkably stupid
act could have disastrous effects on their lives?

Lending a helping hand
I found myself playing the good Samaritan last
week during RAG. My friend and I were walking
to Springboks when a car pulled over and asked for
our help. The driver was screaming about his friend
losing a lot of blood and going into shock. He had
cut his leg against a sharp table and was bleeding
profusely from his knee. The knee bone was already
protruding.
My friend and I should never have got into the
car, but it was impossible to explain to these guys
how to get to Die Boord’s Medi-Clinic. The driver
was sobering up, but his driving was dreadful. We
were almost in three car accidents.
The nurses at Medi-Clinic were very helpful.
Although the injured guy was a nuisance demanding
stitches every two minutes, the head nurse managed
to calm him down, asking him about his family and
what he was studying.
You see the strangest things in the trauma unit.
One student had been hit near his eye by a flying
bottle, while another girl had been scratched by her
boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend.
Please remember your IDs and medical insurance
card when you party. A few students couldn’t be
helped until this was done. It also saves a lot of time
when filling in the forms. Also, try to know your
parents’ cell numbers off by heart or have them
written down somewhere. One student was so drunk
he dropped his phone on the way to hospital.

Facing my demons: A mid-life crisis at 21
Billy liar
L
et me start off
by welcoming
everyone back.
2011, New Year, all
that. Make it it a good
one.
At the start of this year
I reached life’s final, and
probably most revered, rite
of passage, namely
turning 21. The
final sign that you
have reached maturity, the
gates of life now open, the
roads laid out. Well, after
the celebrations had passed
and the year had moved on,
the shine of it slowly faded
away as with all birthdays.
Now, as far as I’m
concerned, this is probably
a good point at which to
turn around and take stock of
where you are in life, before
you reach your forties and
are sworn to do battle with
the “psychological” demon
(apparently more common
amongst men), known as the
mid-life crisis.
So to hell with it, I thought.
Have all the i’s been dotted and
the t’s crossed? Am I going where
I want to and am I the kind of guy
I would enjoy having a beer with?
Come on, let’s be honest. Despite every
thing you’ve heard, life isn’t a big bowl of
fun and sunshine and double rainbows.
It’s work and bills and screaming
children at your feet. Okay, granted,
the freedom and independence is pretty
rewarding.
Question is, are you geared for it? Are
you deserving of the spoils that this ritual
will grant you?
I’m probably not the first person to
»andHave

struggle with this dilemma, seeing as
everyone is slowly moving towards the
great beyond at their own steady pace.
Luckily there are people who have
made the transition from the classrooms of
university to the asphalt jungle, and some
did it quite well.
In my case, it turns out my parents
waltzed into the world, machete in hand,
ready to slay whatever life threw at them.
Therefore, they were the logical choice to
ask for advice.
Most people will agree: the father
figure in your life is wise beyond com-
“
parison – once you get him away from the
braai or Saturday rugby.
Mine gave me two pieces of advice
which made the future shrink down to a
controllable size. Firstly, he told me, “Son,
a man is not defined by the speeches he
makes or the clothes he wears, but rather
by the choices he makes in life.
“And if I may quote Kenny Rogers,
‘The secret to survival is knowing what to
throw away, and knowing what to keep’.”
Granted, I thought. Sure enough
you shape who you are by your choices
between right and wrong, hard work or
laziness.
But how do I keep head above water?
If I find myself in times of trouble, what
do I do?
And as wise as the old man is, he did
the following: He pushed a little bit of
paper in my hand. Hell, how’s that going
to help me?
As it turns out, on that piece of paper
was the information every guy or girl
needs to take on the world. It was a poem
by Rudyard Kipling, named “If”. (Give it
a read, it’ll be worth it.).
To quote my favourite passage: “If you
can keep your head, when all about you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you.
If you can meet with triumph and
disaster, and treat those two imposters just
the same [...] (then)Yours is the Earth and
everything that’s in it; And what’s more,
you’ll be a Man my son.”

Baby, you’re a firework
’n brandblusser loop, want kampus is erger as
daardie Katy Perry-musiekvideo.
vuurtjie brand. Die rokie is beslis hier op kampus,
want ons asem net roet in. Geboue is blykbaar
reg om vlam te vat. Just gonna to stand there and
watch me burn? But that’s alright, because I like
the way it hurts.
nou weer Hollands”: Die Kaap is nou Nederduits
Gereformeerd.
warming. Hulle is erger as ’n koei se metaangas.

David Higgs:
Flavour of
the Year
BY JO WESSELS
I
f you walk into any Exclusive
Books, Woolworths or newsstand
in 2011, you will be likely to
encounter a familiar local face, namely
that of David Higgs, executive chef
of Rust and Vrede Restaurant, who
is on the cover of this year’s Eat Out
Magazine.
And with good reason. At the most
recent Eat Out Awards, where South
Africa’s prestigious top ten restaurants
are announced, David managed an unprecedented hattrick by winning the
three main awards at the event.
He accepted the awards for Best
Restaurant, Best Service and Chef
of the Year, letting the focus fall on
Stellenbosch as the culinary capital of
SA.
One could easily think that a top
chef involved in fine dining might
be egotistic and unapproachable, but
David is a down-to-earth guy who
exhibits great wit. When asked about
doing an interview with Die Matie,
he joked, “I don’t think that’s such a
good idea. Then all the students will
recognise me when I’m drinking in
town.”
It’s a Saturday afternoon at the
Rust en Vrede Restaurant where we
sit down to find out more about the
culinary man of the moment.
David was born in Cape Town and
spent his early childhood in Walvis
Bay before returning to the Cape. His
training was obtained through the then
Cape Technicon.
A large part of his influence
comes from his experience working
at Stafford Quality Foods, a company

perience should be a full one, encompassing everything from food and
wine to ambience and service.
But the secret ingredient, according
to him? Relationships.
He always ensures that he greets
patrons personally on arrival, and
enquires about the wellbeing of the
regular guests, whom he knows by
name.
The restaurant has a very personal
and cosy atmosphere to it. In contrast
to many other restaurants, where every
thing happens behind closed doors and
executive chefs are often absent, Rust
en Vrede’s kitchen is open. Guests
can see every dish being prepared by
David’s own hands.
The openess of the kitchen also
allows David to observe and supervise
what’s happening on the restaurant
floor with the waiting staff and guests.
And if there’s a problem, you’ll be
sure to hear about it. Stern and strong
words will often be dealt out where
David sees fault, at volumes that aren’t
always synonymous with fine dining.
Think Gordon Ramsay. He explains
that with the enormous amount of
pressure in a restaurant, problems have
to be addressed immediately. There’s
no time to be coy about it.
The industry is indeed known for
its stressful nature, so I ask him what
he does to relax.
“I drink a lot,” he chuckles.
Other than that he is a great fan of
motorsports, and his KTM motorbike
is something very dear to him. He
also enjoys travelling to Namibia
and Botswana, but proudly calls
Stellenbosch home.
He explains that he particularly
enjoys the multifacetedness of the
Stellenbosch community. He sees a
wide variety of guests, and also enjoys
the interaction with students that are

dealing with a wide array of culinary
responsibilities, ranging from food
production to catering and teaching.
He highlights that it taught him a lot
about management, which he views as
an invaluable life skill.
It was also here where he worked
closely with his guru, Bill Stafford, for
seven years.
Thereafter David started his own
school in 2000 (The David Higgs
School of Good Cooking), followed by
his own catering company in 2001. A
third venture saw him running Leinster
Hall restaurant in Cape Town.
He then helped with the establishment of the restaurant and function
facilities at Meerendal Wine Estate
in Durbanville before setting up the
restaurant at Rust en Vrede, where
the first entrées were served on 10
November 2007.
Within the first year of operation,
the restaurant was nominated for the
Eat Out Top 10 Restaurants in SA,
where it placed 6th. Shortly afterwards it achieved a placing on the
San Pellegrino list of the top 100 restaurants in the world. Remarkable
achievements given the short time in
which the restaturant had been operational.
But asked about the awards he’s
received, David shrugs them off
modestly. “They’re really nice, but
there are no real individual accolades
in the industry. There’s no such thing
as the best chef. Everything is a team
effort.”
I ask him about his food philosophy, to which he replies, “I’m not a
helluva philosopher”
Something he can say he strongly
believes in is that the restaurant ex-
part of his waiting staff.
The diversity is also something
he sees and enjoys at De Akker – his
favourite hangout.
“I love that mix of age and professions. There really are no barriers. It’s
a really special place.” he says.
I’m curious to find out what he eats
when outside the restaurant.
“Shit,” he says with a straight face.
“McDonalds and pork pies.”
In true South African style,
he’s a big fan of braaiing, and is a
Braai4Heritage ambassador.
Does he believe that there’s truth in
the saying that the way to a person’s
heart is through their stomach? Does
cooking impress the ladies?
“Definitely. Chicks dig it,” he
laughs, knowingly.
So what would he recommend a
guy cook to make a girl swoon?
“Anything,” he answers. “I think
that girls basically enjoy the theatre of
seeing a man cook.”
Then, after a moment of consider
ation, he adds, smiling, “Just don’t
give her something she’s allergic to.
The last thing you want her doing is
swelling up!”
Is there any advice he can offer us
students on cooking? “Don’t overcomplicate flavours. Keep things simple.”
He adds, “Cooking is 10% skill and
90% common sense.”
He’s must be lying, I think to
myself. He’s definitely got much,
much more than 10%.

By elke TV-wedstryd sal daar
ook ’n groot skerm wees wat aan
Supersport se regstreekse uitsending
gekoppel gaan word. Só sal toeskouers
al die opwindende oomblikke wéér op
die skerm kan sien.
Waterbreuke sal vir die duur van die
Varsity Cup bekendstaan as strategiese
breuke, waartydens die afrigters op die
veld toegelaat gaan word.
Tukkies het, met behulp van
hul vennootskap met die Blou
Bulle, die bekende Heineken
Meyer as afrigter ingespan
Ná elkeen van hierdie breuke
sal daar vir drie minute met ’n
pienk bal gespeel word. Indien die
tuisspan in hierdie periode punte
sou aanteken, kan die betrokke span
se ondersteuners die volgende dag,
geklee in ondersteunersklere, ’n gratis
Carling Black Label saam met hul ete
by die plaaslike Spur geniet.
Soos in die verlede, sal daar by
elke wedstryd ’n Babe-that-Rocks
(’n skoonheid uit die ondersteuners)
aangewys word.
Daar gaan ook R2 500 prysgeld
per wedstryd aan die Fan-that-Rocks
gegee word. Ondersteuners met
unieke kleredrag sal ook in die skare
deur Pokkel, die Maties-gelukbringer,
uitgewys word.
Soos in 2010 gaan een speler per
span tydens wedstryde ’n pienk broek
dra. Vir die eerste wedstryd van die
toernooi sal die onderskeie kapteine
daarmee speel. Daarna sal die speler
van die wedstryd die pienk broek dra.
Spelers dra die pienk broek ten bate
van die Varsity Cup-Kankertrust vir
huidige en oudrugbyspelers wat met
kanker gediagnoseer word.
Deelnemende universiteite sal ook
soos in die verlede meeding om as
beste ondersteuner van hierdie trust
aangewys te word.
Kaartjies vir Varsity Cup is reeds
beskikbaar by die Rugby-kantoor in
die Danie Craven-stadion. Seisoenkaartjies op die oop-paviljoen is teen
R100 beskikbaar.
