YOUTH MINISTRY 101

Much of my hands-on youth ministry is working with volunteers in
churches that do not have a youth pastor. Those studly heroes of
the faith are rolling up their sleeves and getting elbow deep in the
lives of teenagers. When I show up, they’re almost desperate for
immediate practical help.
The questions they ask are generally not the questions being
answered at large youth ministry conferences, or in most youth
ministry books and videos. They want to know how to keep certain
kids from fighting, or how to handle squirrelly freshmen boys who
refuse to settle down, or what to do about those three kids who
just want to hang out in the parking lot and smoke.
Answering those questions is relatively easy. Those are “band-aid”
kinds of situations. The issues of doing ministry with teenagers
run far deeper than “band-aid” problems. What the youth
leaders I’m around really need is direction, skill training,
and hope.
That’s what we’re aiming for with this issue of Youth Leaders Only.
We’re calling the theme for this issue “Youth Ministry 101” – a
back-to-basics issue. We want to focus on the essentials for doing
youth ministry, and provide you with some articles and resources
that you can use yourself and with your ministry team. Check out
the articles, and you’ll see what I mean!
You’ll also notice some other pretty cool things about this YLO. For
one, we’re doing something that we’ve never done before: we are
including the not-even-available-anywhere new album
from Skillet! We are working directly with Skillet and their record
companies and it works like this – yo u are receiving the new album
on a download card which goes live on June 25, the day that the
album is released. There will be Bible studies and resources for all
the songs PLUS there will be an opportunity for your kids to get the
album early through your group. Talk about getting you the newest
and best in Christian music!
You’ve probably already spotted the gigantic Comparison Chart
that’s in the midd le of this magazine. (If you’re reading this and the
poster is gone, someone got to it before you, and it’s already
hanging on the youth room wall!) This Comparison Chart can be
your secret weapon in your efforts to get teenagers filling their
minds and hearts with godly music. Your young friends can easily
find Christian alternatives to the secular musicians that they like!
One of the basics of youth m inistry is outreach. We’ve partnered
with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to include the
special edition of their great new outreach DVD “Defining
Moments” which is a part of the nationwide outreach “My Hope
America” which will be Billy Graham’s last message and will be on
TV and all outlets in November.
This YLO is loaded with amazing music and youth group resources
from some Christian music’s best: Audio Adrenaline (with Kevin
Max), Building 429, Hawk Nelson, Salvador, The Afters, and
Delirious?’ Martin Smith (Modern Worship article and chord charts.)
Our hope and prayer is that this YLO is a blessing to you and your
team. The articles, music, lead sheets, huge Comparison Chart,
music-based Bible studies, reTunes, and Thematic Listing of the
songs are just waiting for you to use them for God’s glory. Go for it!

Resource Book
Sure, at first glance you notice how great it looks—very current, very
stylish. Go ahead—flip through this book a bit. Notice the helpful
design? Did you catch the organizational details? The more you look
at this book, the more you will appreciate the functionality that has
been built into it. Here is a quick tour…

If you’re like most of us, you keep
your YLO (Youth Leaders Only) books
stored on a bookshelf. When you want
to search for a song or video that deals
with a certain topic, slide each book
out a couple of inches and read the
themes and featured articles for each
issue. Cool!
The Index
Take a look at the index or “table of
contents”—notice the colored bars?
They represent sections in the book
and they clue you in on which albums /
Bible Studies are “Main,”“Mild,”or “Hot.”
You will notice in the Bible Studies

Finding good Christian music isn’t hard,
but coming up with ways to use it in
your ministry with teenagers takes time,
talent, and energy. Real-world youth
leaders write the Bible Studies; the
sessions are field-te sted and proven
effective with real-world teenagers.
Thematic Listing
Not every song on every CD has a
Bible Study written for it. That doesn’t
mean you can’t use those other songs
in your ministry with students.
Modern Worship Section
In this section you’ll find encouraging
and enlightening resources to help you
develop your youth’s worship ministry.

“I am
convinced
that
impact
happens
person-toperson.”
As a fifteen-year veteran of student ministry, I’ll
admit that I love the big events. I love planning
them with my team and working out the details.
I love the excitement of seeing a ton of students
having a blast – in church. I love the crazy games,
the loud music, and the free t-shirts. Throw in a
Christian band and I’m in heaven.
However, in recent years there’s been a movement to shift away from the big events, and
“programming” has become a dirty word. Youth
pastors have been told to abandon the program
and “just hang out with kids.” When you talk with
youth workers, it does not take long before the
conversation turns to the “program vs.
relationship” debate.
Before we go and split the church over this
philosophy of ministry (don’t laugh, it’s been split
over far less important issues), let’s agree that both
sides of this conversation have valid points. We
have all seen the benefits of the big event, and I
believe there will always be a place for them. But,
I am convinced that impact happens person-toperson. So here are a few things I do to make
an impact.
1. Get Out of the Office
I have two offices at my church – I have the
“official office” which is really just a cubicle right
outside my Senior Pastor’s office, and I also have
a “secret office” which is in our student ministry
area. Truthfully, I love my “secret office.” I can
listen to Thousand Foot Krutch as loud as I want,
search YouTube for the latest viral video, and even
catch the latest episode of Duck Dynasty, all while
getting my work done.
But as cool as my secret office is and as funny as
it may be to watch Uncle Si’s crazy shenanigans,
the truth is – before long, I want out. I want to be
at the school helping out with the Bible Club, or
eating lunch with students, or just hanging out. I
want to live life with them. And I can’t do that
when I’m in my office all the time.
2. Unplug
If you’ve been in student ministry for more than
fifteen minutes, someone has “encouraged” you to
unplug. We all know that students are on Twitter,
Instagram, and Facebook – well, some

homeschoolers are still on Facebook. (Just
kidding, I love both homeschoolers and
Facebook!) But, we need real human interaction
and so do our students. We need to sit down
knee-to-knee and eye-to-eye with them. Buy them
a coffee, milkshake, or smoothie and put the
phone away. You’ll be surprised how much better
you’ll get to know them!
3. Know the Calendar
Here in the north we have “snow days.” I love
snow days because they provide me with an
excellent opportunity to grab some students and
do something fun. But if I know the calendar, I can
be even more intentional when students have a
day off from school. Let’s be honest – we know
they already forgot what you spoke about last
Wednesday. So use those off days to create
memories that will last a lifetime.
4. Plan Better
Sometimes I’m not as prepared as I should be.
(That’s probably not a big surprise, since I just
admitted to watching Duck Dynasty in my office!)
I can’t tell you how many Sunday mornings roll
around and I’m adding that last-minute video to
the media presentation or making copies of
permission slips instead of engaging students as
they walk into the room. Instead of having the time
to ask them how their week was – and REALLY
listen, I’m running around doing tasks that should
have been done during the week.
I know I need to do a better job organizing my
week. I know I need to use my office time to
plan and prepare. I know that when I am better
prepared, real ministry can happen. And when real
ministry happens, impact happens.
Back in November my family and I went back to
Pennsylvania for a friend’s wedding. On our way
home to Ohio we stopped and visited our “home
church.” I was the youth pastor at First Baptist
Church in Milton, PA for five years and we are still
very close with the people there. After church we
went out for lunch with some of the “students”
who are now adults. We laughed for over two
hours retelling stories and reliving memories.

There is a lot to love about youth ministry. As
one who has traveled over three decades of
shepherding teenagers, there are still many parts
I enjoy leading and doing. (Okay, I still don’t like
fundraising!) There is the adventure of trying new
events, the thrill of teaching kids how to
snowboard, or taking them to a ballgame for the
first time. I love the latitude we are given to try out
different teaching styles and I experience the joy
(because it is not always happiness) of walking
with teenagers in their unpredictable world. If I
were to leave youth ministry today there would be
plenty I would miss. The list above and more are
all things I enjoy as a hands-on participant. It’s
great to ride the whirlwind and have an impact on
the direction at the same time.
Youth ministry is not about me as the leader, it’s
not about the cool volunteers I recruit, it’s not
about the fantastic events I run, or the “dig-deep”
teaching times I lead. It is about how I and the
other leaders help the students develop as
capable young people who walk with God all the
days of their lives. This requires more of them in
the “spotlight” and less of me. It is admitting my
role is to be God’s servant. My job is to re-focus
the “spotlight” and be sure the stage is set for
youth to grow in their relationship with God and be
trained in using their gifts/talents to share the good
news of hope we find in Christ.
How do we offer an environment where youth are
empowered to live out their faith in a meaningful
and effective way? Thinking through my own
ministry experience and the many other youth
leaders with whom I have worked, here are six
ways I offer:

Walk With Them
Back in the days when we were all trying to
adapt ministry to Generation X, I was sitting
around the table with a group of youth pastors.
Many were talking about worship experiences of
candles, paintings, turning down the lights, being
contemplative and more as a way to connect.
Finally one of the youth leaders said, “Hmmm –
I just kinda’ think we should be in the lives of the
kids.” The next sound I heard was “crickets.” Years
from now our youth will most remember when we
ate with them and how we traveled with them
through the ups and downs of adolescence. Our
care for them in this way opens the door to
understanding their identity in Christ.
Let Them Lead
Giving students leadership looks great in books
and on a strategic plan. Actually implementing
this can be another story. I have found leadership
often happens best in the midst of spontaneity.
A teenager will raise an idea or offer a twist on
something I had already planned. Their motivation
and passion for it is evident and I let them run.
This calls for flexibility on my part and the ability to
allow for failure/success as a part of the process.
Program With Purpose
If I program only with me in mind or what I think
works best, I have short-circuited the opportunity
to let youth and families be a part of the process
for holistic growth in the life of the teenager. It
takes time, tons of input, and understanding of
the culture in your church/community to build a
structure where youth feel empowered to be and
do as God has created them.

Train For Life
Our best youth ministry is one where we are
thinking well beyond the present years and
equipping with the big picture in mind. Teaching
our teenagers to put Christ at the center of their
lives is key. Helping them to value the Word of
God as the source for their understanding and
wisdom of God and life gives them an anchor for
the turbulent young adult years when everything
is questioned.
Affirm With Honesty
We live in a generation of entitlement. Youth are
affirmed for almost everything they do. Last place
teams get trophies. All this has cheapened the
value of genuine affirmation. It is important for
us to offer teenagers specific and authentic
affirmation helpful to the awareness of their true
strengths. In turn, they will learn best how they can
most effectively contribute to the greater kingdom
of God.
Connect Them with the Church Family
Studies continue to show the potential of youth
walking with God after high school graduation
increases when they have been integrated well into
the total life of the congregation. It is here they can
mentor and be mentored within the faith in the mix
of all generations. This better positions them to
use their gifts/talents wherever they may go.
There is a lot to love about youth ministry. May
we love most the opportunities to find ourselves
behind the “spotlight” and watching our youth
launch well into the life God has given them.

seven ways to connect
FEATURE

Establishing solid relationships with
students in your ministry is one of the
most essential pillars needed for a
ministry that goes beyond the walls
of a church and into a deeper
foundation for discipleship. These
relationships take more than one or
two “group nights” a week to build;
they require an intentional mindset
and a willing heart. Here are seven
simple ways to connect with your
students outside of scheduled
ministry programs. When you
connect with them outside of the
church building, they will feel valued,
validated, and loved.
1. Attend a sports event, a school
play, a band performance, etc. in
which your student/students
participate. Unfortunately, many
students don’t get any support from
the people who are closest to them,
including parents. Your small act of
showing up tells the student that
he/she is worth your time.
2. Remember their birthdays and
show recognition through a phone
call or card. I know how daunting
remembering each one can be,
especially when some of us can’t
even remember what day of the week
it is! Make it easy on yourself - when
a student fills out a welcome card,
make sure their birthday is listed, and
then enter it as soon as possible in
your phone calendar, office calendar,
etc. Have a dry erase calendar board
on the wall of the youth room and
have students put their upcoming
events (including birthdays) on that
month. This will help you keep better
track of the students’ activities (see
number 1) and special days.
3. Take them out for lunch. I know
budgets are slim and money is tight,
but that’s a two-way street. Some
students haven’t splurged on a
greasy, cheeseburger for quite some
time. So treat them! It’s a great way
to have casual conversation in a nonthreatening environment. This lets
students know they’re worth more
to you than your money. (Note:
Although intentions are pure,
remember that society looks at
the interactions between older
men/women and minors. Be above
reproach; only have one-on-ones
with students of the same sex.
You can always bring lunch to the
students’ schools and interact in
small groups all while achieving the
same goal.)
4. Encourage students through little
notes, postcards, texts, etc. Students
are surrounded by put-downs,

criticism, and verbal abuse at
school, home, and/or just walking
in a store. Bullying is at an all-time
high, and depression in youth is
rising. Counteract the disease by
encouraging students at every
opportunity. Postcards and letters
make great “trophies” that students
often put in their binder covers. A
little encouragement goes a long
way with students. Show them
how valuable they are through
your words.
students, but the reality is that
students want to see that you have
flaws and are working on them, that
sometimes you don’t always respond
the way you should, that you yourself
are growing in Christ, just as they
are. This doesn’t mean you divulge
things that you share with your
accountability partner; it just means
that it’s okay to be real and open
about some of the flaws you struggle
with. This flips the script and lets
students know YOU trust THEM.
5. Provide ways for students to show
off their talents. Noticing that Jenny
and Angelica are creative geniuses
could spark a craft day or art gallery
showcase. Hearing Matthew’s guitar
skills may bring a day of guitar
lessons or even a youth band in
which he helps other students find
their musical abilities. Have a writer
in your group? Ask them to write an
article about the latest youth trip;
better yet, add a student who loves
photography and you can get a youth
newsletter up and running. Whatever
the case may be, provide
opportunities for students to shine
with their God-given talents.
7. Be available. Plain and simple.
Students have curveballs thrown at
them left and right. When they trust
you enough to reach out, reach right
back! Return phone calls in a timely
manner, text back when you can, and
answer your phone. (You need to
have time for your family and for
yourself. So if your office hours are
9am-5pm, be available.) What
students often need most is just for
someone to listen. Be the one to
step up and listen up.
Don’t feel pressured to implement all
of these at once. Tackle them one by
one and enjoy the ride!
6. Be real. Need I say anymore? If
we’re honest with ourselves, we try
to paint ourselves in the best light for

It’s game time. You’re prepared, and
now you’re up. It’s Wednesday night
and as you begin speaking, you see
on the students’ faces varying levels
of interest. Some look as if they are
hanging on your every word, but
many look as if they are barely
hanging in there at all! Why? You
are a great person – energetic and
surprisingly good-looking! What is
the problem? Are the students the
problem? Or could the problem be
your aim?

Aim?
Doug Fields (yes, THE Doug Fields)
explains the various categories he
uses to examine the levels of spiritual
commitment that students bring to
youth ministry: community, crowd,
congregation, committed, and core.
He used the picture of a target to
show that our goal was the spiritual
growth of students from one
category to the next. The picture of
a target and its concentric circles
gave us the picture of growth,
represented by the movement from
the outside circle to the next circle
inward, until you arrived at the center.
Those “Core” students, in the center
of the circle, would then move
outward to serve other students,
beginning with the “Community”
students in the outer circle.
This visual demonstration is a
reminder to me that the ministry
structures we plan should have a
target. Here are a few tips for
targeting ministry toward both
sinners AND saints – and everything
in between.
READY
First ask, “Who?” Consider your
audience. Who comes to which
event? At my church, our team
began to realize that “Crowd”
students were coming to special
events, “Congregation” students
were coming on Wednesday nights,
“Committed” students were coming
on Sunday mornings, and “Core”
students were coming on Sunday
nights. There were plenty of
exceptions to this. However, when
you examine who is coming to what,
you will begin to identify trends
which can lead to better strategies.
AIM
Next ask, “Why?” This question is
the quickest arrow toward the
purpose for your event or program.
Ask this of the whole team, not
merely of the big dog, because
everyone needs to be on the same
page as to that purpose. As you

identify the purpose, you can then
evaluate whether or not the purpose
is being served. Remember two
things: first, purposeless events need
to be scrapped; second, be all things
to all people at all events. Even as
you find the primary purpose of an
event, you want to be able to invite a
student to ANYTHING you do. You
will need to include in some way
various elements in your event that
benefit each of the various levels.
FIRE
Finally ask, “What?” As you plan, this
is the largest step in the process.
There are many, many details in this
step, and this step takes the longest
time. You must examine the details of
your planning to verify that they are
lined up as straight as an arrow with
the “Who?” and the “Why?” Is what
you are doing actually aimed at the
wrong group of students? Are
“Crowd” students receptive to deeply
inductive Bible study? Do “Core”
students want more than silly games
every week? As you plan, remember
to plan for spiritual growth to happen
one level at a time. Growth is slow.
Be patient. Plan for this entire journey
to aim at slowly hitting closer to the
target, one level at a time.
Most of us skip straight to the WHAT.
However, when you match your
WHAT with your WHY because of
your WHO, you can better aim, and
hopefully better hit your intended
target. (For the record, I did not
just say that shooting students
with actual arrows is a funny
icebreaker game!)
I have begun to think a great deal
about my ministry planning and aims.
God recently brought a foster child, a
teenager, into our home, and we are
thrilled. But this new daughter will be
dragged along with me to every
church event we will ever attend,
and I do not want her to hate the
things that were not really planned
for her! Likewise, I know some of our
“core” students find some of our
programming shallow. So let us hit
our targets by aiming before we fire!

Allow me to open a window to my soul for a moment. I am tired. Really, really
tired. I live in Guatemala City serving youth leaders throughout Central
America and the Caribbean who work with high-risk youth in very hard
places. My colleagues and I have been thinking long and hard about what
spiritual formation looks like for youth leaders serving gang incarcerated
youth, street youth, and teens from families living in extreme poverty. We talk
a lot about trying to figure out what the Jesuits meant by exploring
“spirituality on the run.” The Jesuits, deeply engaged in the world, serve with
“one foot raised” to the extent that they can stay deeply engaged with what is
unfolding around them.
As I sat down this morning in the midst of a few days for writing and
reflection, I had a direction I was prepared to go, thinking about the youth
workers in the networks that we serve who work tirelessly with young people
drowning in violence and unrelenting poverty. I thought I knew the direction I
was planning to go when I got up this morning, but now my gaze has shifted.
I am sitting on a bench in the Parque Central (Central Park) of Antigua,
Guatemala. It is one of the most beautiful “parque centrals” in all of Latin
America. Here I become attentive to the contrast between the restlessness of
my soul against the backdrop of the beauty and sweetness of the park. A
majestic fountain lies at the center of the park and around it all activity in the
park revolves. European and U.S. tourists mingle with indigenous women
selling their “cosas tipicas” and smiling shoeshine boys offering their
services. There are lovers peering into each other’s eyes while children run
and jump around the fountain with the gentle breeze glistening their little
faces with mist from the fountain spray. Now a small army of teenagers in
their colorful, coordinated uniforms pass through the park with electricity in
their step on the way to school. This morning, at this moment, all is well with
the world in Parque Central.
Why do I seldom find these kinds of “sweet, sacred, centering times” in my
life? Why have I figured out so intricately the “running” part of Jesuit
spirituality, but have so poorly lived out the, dare I admit, “spirituality” part?
The answer is not found in the idea of a momentary escape from the rigors of
youth ministry (“quiet time”) where one settles into a quiet bench in a park

centered by a stationary fountain whose hidden pumps spout recycled water
up into the sky. No, my prayers for my youth ministry friends in the trenches
this morning are rooted in the idea of a spirituality on the run that see’s the
world as a “parque central” with the life giving fountain of God’s presence in
all places at all times. St. Bonaventure (1221-1274) said God is “within all
things but not enclosed; outside all things, but not excluded; above all things,
but not aloof; below all things, but not debased.” Bonaventure spoke of God
as one “whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.”
Now that is quite a sacred, sweet, and safe “park” to live in. Bonaventure
seemed to see the whole world as the Parque Central that I find myself sitting
in right now!
What would it look like if I could actually learn to live out the implications of
that theological premise that I profoundly believe to be true? What does this
mean for the youth workers I serve who need a spirituality that can sustain
them in the midst of insurmountable pain and hardship? W. H. Auden
animates my work when he writes, “I know nothing, except what everyone
knows – if there when Grace dances, I should dance.” Grace is always
dancing, often most artfully in the very place my friends serving young people
and their families currently find themselves.
The late missiologist and theologian Orlando Costas wrote, “With Jesus there
came a fundamental shift in the location of salvation: the center was moved
to the periphery… The fact that Jesus wrought salvation outside the Holy City
does not mean that we have now a new salvific center, but rather a
permanent, moving center in the periphery of life.”
Maybe that is what spirituality on the run for youth ministry looks like. A
beautiful fountain in a portable “parque central” that moves wherever I go,
if only I cultivate the awareness to live into it. That’s about as “Youth Ministry
101” as one can get. For now, at least, I am content to sit here on this bench
in the sweet sacred moment of this particular parque central and pray for
my friends who are pouring out their lives for young people in very hard
places and circumstances. I pray that they might dance today in the mist
of the great Fountain of Life, “whose center is everywhere and whose
circumference is nowhere.”

What impact did your youth groups have on you guys?
I was raised going to youth group ever since I was a kid. Youth
work had a huge impact on my life. My greatest experiences
with God as a youth and teenager were either at Wednesday
church meetings, conferences, or summer church camp. My
wife and I were also the youth leaders at my church for a year
because we so passionately believe in the power of G od moving
through teenagers.
You guys have such a vast youth fan base – why do
you feel that using your music to reach youth is
so important?
Music is so important in young people’s lives; many times it’s
something that young people first learn to define themselves by.
It can determine the clothes they wear, how they express
themselves, and the kinds of people they hang out with. Music,
in my opinion, is one of the most powerful forces in a young
person’s life.
John and Korey, you have kids of your own – do you
make sure they’re plugged into a youth ministry?
Actually, since we tour so constantly, they don’t have the luxury
of being too involved in most “normal” activities! However, they
have relationships with church leaders and friends in our church.
They love being home to go to church and worship to gether.
Also, my father-in-law pastors our church, and Korey’s four
siblings are all married and all leaders in the church as well! So
my kids have 13 cousins who all go to the same church and all
worship together. Therefore, they are pretty involved with
relationships in the life of the church even though they are not

physically present very often. Lastly, my kids have an
understanding that Skillet is out ministering on the road, and
they get to be a part of the work of God in that way.
Your new single “Sick Of It” is referenced as an anthem
for youth to make a change. What is the overall
message you want this album to relay to youth?
I want to relay that even though this world is violent and
tragedies happen every day, there is still hope in God . God gives
us strength to rise above the pain of this world by giving us a
purpose that is greater than earthly life. Therefore, all of us have
a voice that needs to be heard to help bring that faith and life to
others. God wants to use YOU in his great plan. Rise up and
be counted!
From your experience with touring – meeting and
reaching youth around the world – what advice would
you give youth leaders to better reach today’s youth?
Most youth leaders I meet are all saying the same thing: we need
to listen to what our kids are going through. It’s a different world
now than it was when I was a teenager. It is all changing so fast.
Young people want to be heard and understood. I also think it’s
really important that we are genuine and REAL to young people.
As youth leaders in your own way, how do youth
influence your music and the topics that come through
the lyrics?
I try to write songs about the things I see and feel on a day-today basis. It’s important to notice what people are going through
if you want to make a difference and speak hope to someone. So

I enjoy talking to fans and reading their tweets and emails,
because doing so gives me an idea of what they need to hear
and how to help.
What is the best way to utilize your music in
youth ministry?
I love it when I meet people who became fans of ours because a
youthworker played Skillet for them! I think it’s great for youth
workers to know that young people are going to listen to music,
and like it or not, many times that music will help define them.
Therefore, having a good hold on relevant Christian music
is important.
Also, taking the time to understand what the bands are talking
about and how it applies to real life today is important. I don’t
know how many people (parents, mainly) have been offended by
our song “Monster” because it “seemed dark.” When the song
was explained to them—that we are all born sinful into this world
and need to be redeemed, and there is war between the flesh
and the spirit—they seem to realize that it’s just a new way to
explain original sin and our need to be transformed. In a way, it’s
the gospel message.
All that to say, any way you can think of to get Christian
songs across to young people and explain the he art behind it is
very powerful.

HOA: Audio Adrenaline

Audio Adrenaline is back! Scott Osterbind from interlínc caught up with
founding member Will McGinniss as he shared about the new Kings & Queens
album, the Hands & Feet Project (HAFP), and the addition of some well-known
members to the band.
After years of successful tours and albums, Audio Adrenaline
closed the curtain back in 2007. What circumstances lead to that
tough decisi on?
Mark (Stuart) was becoming handicapped with a vocal disorder and all of us
agreed we needed to shut it down and let him see if there was any way for him
to recover. The only way was to give him plenty of time and remove the
pressure that he felt to keep it going for the rest of the band. All of us were and
still are brothers and dear friends, and it was very hard for all of us.
The Hands & Feet Proj ect has always been near and dear to the
band’s purpose. How were you guys able to invest even more to
this cause after the band called it quits?
HAFP at that point became front and center, especially in the lives of Mark and
myself. This was our legacy, what we were most proud of. We didn’t have the
band anymore to bring awareness to the work, so we dug in and created ways
for us to keep it up and runn ing and growing as God saw fit. Not traveling
anymore allowed us to really focus on HAFP and many other areas of our life like family, church, small group, community work, etc.
What lead up to Audio Adrenaline’s decision to make music again?
First off, it was a complete surprise but definitely how God works. Looking
back, God knew that we needed to take a break. He needed to get our
attention and want ed for us to be fed spiritually. Reconnecting with my family
and church was a lifesaver. So the last five years have ended up being much
like a sabbatical for me; I’m not the same person I was. God was equipping
me and growing my faith, preparing me for a new season.
It started with conversations with the Newsboys’ manager, Wes Campbell. He
would see Mark and I around town and ask if we would ever cons ider getting
the band back together. We would answer, “We would love to, but Mark’s
voice hasn’t gotten any better” and he would always say, “Well, I’m praying for
you.” Wes would end the conversations with, “…you have to know, the fans
out there really miss you guys.” In February 2012 the conversation with Wes
changed a bit, and this time he asked if we would consider getting the band
back together, bu t with a new lead singer, and that singer should be Kevin Max
from DC Talk. We had a good laugh and then he said, “No, I’m serious!” Mark
and I both didn’t really feel it at first, but after many conversations with Wes
and eventually Kevin, God began to reveal more of His plan.

You see, just to go back out on tour and make music again without a purpose
wasn’t enough, but that is when the conversation c hanged to, “How can we
do this in a way that will bring awareness to the orphan crisis in Haiti and our
work at HAFP?” It was then that things began to click for me and my family,
and everyone really. So HAFP is connected to this “Audio A 2.0” at deep
levels; net proceeds go back to HAFP with every record sold. Mark could still
be involved, but from the HAFP side and in a writing and Executive Producer
type role, and the rest of us would go out and tell the story from the stage.
God is a creative author and writes these amazing chapters into your life.
Kevin Max of DC Talk is not the only Christian music veteran to
join forces with Audio Adrenaline. What other greats have joined
the roster?
Along with Kevin, we have Jared Byers (Bleach, Relient K) on drums, Dave
Gazharian (Superchick) on guitars, and Jason Walker (solo artist/writer from
Nashville) on keys and vocals. It’s a world-class band and everyone has
knitted their hearts together for the common vision, making amazing music
and propping up HAFP and the orphans of Haiti.
The title track “Kings& Queens” paints the picture of what the
Hands & Feet project is all about. The music video shows the true
beauty of Haiti and its children. Why was it so important to have
them be a part of it?
These kids were not props in the video; but rather, we had the actual children
from both of our sites in Haiti at HAFP. We know their stories and what God
has saved them from. They have captured our hearts and we can’t help but tell
everyone about these dear souls who the world has tried to rob so much. But
now because they have been adopted into a family at HA FP, they can start to
reach their God-given design. This song and the new Audio A are for them.
How is the song “Believer” a defining anthem for
Audio Adrenaline?
Audio A has never been afraid of their faith or the label “Christian Band.” We
wear that name proudly and want to boldly head back out on the road. We
take our stage and platform very seriously and want to continue using it to
help HAFP and to encourage and uplift other believers. This song is a
statement of our continued belief in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Is this a “one off” record for you?
Not at all. We want to be faithful with what God has entrusted to us. So we are
going to be out there doing what Audio A has always been about: the least of
these, the widow, the poor, the underdog, the downcast – and be examples of
Christ to t he people we come into contact with.

Building 429’s new album We Won’t Be Shaken.
Frontman Jason Roy took time out from tour
rehearsals to share more about this encouraging
new release.

are trying to achieve with their new album.
How did a pl aque on your Manager’s desk
help define We Won’t Be Shaken?
The plaque said “What would you attempt if knew
you could never fail?” I saw that and realized that
we had never really fully embraced the opportunity
to completely create a record with a fearless
mentality. This record was our best attempt to
make an artistically and spiritually fearless record,
while still maintaining the focus on delivering w hat
our fans have come to know us for. I think when
people hear songs like “Bonfire” and “Revolution,”
they’ll hear that fearlessness in the band.
How has Building 429 lived the We
Won’t Be Shaken message when faced
with difficulty?
Many times we wanted to quit and go home.
Honestly, we got to the place of literally asking the
Lord to make it clear if we were or were not
supposed to carry on. That’s a sc ary place, but we
persevered and felt that God made it clear that He
wasn’t done with this thing. When you clearly see
God’s hand at work, the fear tends to fade away.
Building 429’s music has no apologies for
its direct message to the church, but how
do you also hope to reach non-believers?
That’s a great question; we are unapologetically
Christian guys who write songs about what we
believe in. Years ago when we started, people were
burning thei r mainstream CD’s at youth
conventions – now youth pastors are playing
Mumford and Sons and Katy Perry as walk-in
music for their weekly meetings. Just copying
mainstream artists doesn’t work anymore. They
know you’re a rip off. We’ve always believed that
you have to earn the right to share what you
believe, and so we have decided to walk our own
path and trust that the songs God gives us are not
just rele vant to the culture, but hopefully AHEAD of
culture as well.
How have you been able to reach your
audience and impact their lives?
We’ve now had six records over a span of ten
years. That means a lot of songs have permeated
the marketplace. That makes for unbelievable
stories and interactions at “Meet and Greets” and
online interaction. Most of the time it’s “Where I
Belong” or “We Won’t be Shaken” that G od has
allowed to impact peoples’ lives, but
occasionally you get “Always,” “Glory

Defined,” or something way off the charts like “No
One Else Knows.” It means the world to us and it
keeps us focused.
One of my standout favorite songs on
the new album is “Blameless.” I can’t get
over how important the message of this
song is. Can you share more about this
song of redemption?
That song was written with m y father in mind. He’s
an awesome man who carries a mountain of
burdens from his past. One day I started thinking,
what does my dad need to hear? Maybe that your
past is not meant to be your burden, it’s just your
testimony. Maybe it’s simpler. Maybe it’s just that
you are “Blameless.” He loves that song!
There is no doubt that Building 429 has a huge
calling not only as a band, but also as followers of
Ch rist. What are some ways youth groups can be
praying for you?
We believe that God has called us to LEAD. So, this
next season is going to come with some serious
responsibility and with some sizable challenges.
We would ask that people pray that we will
continue to walk confidently and boldly into
whatever doors He may open. Pray for our wives,
our children, and above all that God would use us
to lead the lost to Himself.

Objective
Students will be encouraged to accept
their call to imitate Christ and to love
the people God places in their path.
Warm Up
Separate the students into groups of
three or four. Invite each group to create a brief skit. Their skits must do one
thing: show what “love” is. After giving
the groups sufficient time to create the
skits, invite them to perform their skits
in front of everyone.
Transition
Say, “Our world views ‘love’ in many
different ways. We have just seen
some of those ways enacted. Love is
a HUGE part of life. We are created
to love and to be loved. If you watch
television, listen to popular music, or
go see a movie, you will realize that
we long to experience love. Scripture
gives us a very concise definition of
love. The band The Afters help to
introduce us to what love is according
to God. Let’s listen to their song, ‘What
We’re Here For.’”

Hand out the Student Guides. As students listen to the song, have them
write down the images of love that
are presented by the song. When the
song finishes, have students write
down the definition of love presented
by this song.
Transition
Say, “The Afters define love in a way
that is very consistent with Scripture:
imitating Christ by laying it all down
just as He did. In short, God is love!
We are called to imitate God. We are
called to love. We are here so that we
can share love with others. When we
feel useless, we can rest in the fact
that God created us to love and calls
us to love. Let’s take a look at 1 John
and discover our calling to love.”

Bible Study
1 John is a letter that was written
to a congregation torn by disagreement. This conflict caused John
great sorrow. It also caused him to
challenge the people of this congregation toward a proper understanding of the Gospel and toward living
out the Gospel in a way consistent
with Christ. Thus, John challenged
the congregation to live lives of love
inspired by the very act that Christ
offers for all people in love—the act
of sacrifice on the cross. After giving
this background information, lead
the students in reading 1 John 4:721. Then challenge the students to
answer the following questions found
on their Student Guide.
•What is the mark in our lives that
declares that we know God?
•What is our inspiration for expressing
true love?
•How do you think God’s love is made
complete in us?
•According to this passage, how do
we show our love for God?
•What does this passage say regarding our purpose in life? What are we
made for?
•What are some tangible ways that
you can show the love of God?
Wrap Up
Students should now write one
action statement that they will take
in response to the call to reflect
Christ’s love toward one another.
This could be a basic as, “Be on the
lookout for people to whom I can
show sacrificial love” or as complex as naming a specific person
to whom they need to show God’s

Objective
Students will learn that they need to
let go of what they think makes them
“Christian” in order to be a real Christ
follower.
Warm Up
Before your meeting, print enough
pictures of famous people so there is
one for each student. As the students
come in, pin on their backs the face of
a famous person. The students then
go around the room asking others
questions about their new identity. The
questions can only be answered with
“Yes” or “No.”
Transition
After everyone has “discovered” who
they are, discuss:
•How did you feel when you didn’t
know who you were?
•How did you react when you could
only get “yes” or “no” answers?
•How did you feel when you found out
who your identity was?
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides and
explain that you’re going to play the
song “Kill the Elephants” by Alert312.
As they listen, have them write on their
Student Guide what or who they think
are the elephants. Play the song a
couple of times.
Transition
Have students share what elephants
this song brought to their minds. Ask,
“What do you think the phrase ‘kill the
elephants’ is talking about?” If you
have a board or chart paper, list their
ideas for all to see.
Bible Study
Matthew 23:1-5 – Who were the
“elephants”? (Teachers of the Law
and the Pharisees.) How did He call
them out? (They don’t practice what
they preach; they burden everyone
with rules, but they don’t do anything
themselves; and they do everything for
people to see.)
Matthew 23:25-28 – Who were the
“elephants”? (Teachers of the Law,
Pharisees, hypocrites.) How did He
call them out? (They look good on the
outside, but their insides are dirty; they
look beautiful, but they are really just a
bag of dead bones; they appear righteous, but on the inside they are full on
hypocrisy and wickedness.)
Wrap Up
Say, “Wow, Jesus was not playing around in how He felt about
‘elephants’! So, does how He felt then
have anything to do with us today?
Sure it does. Have you ever seen anyone in the church that has been hypocritical? Have you ever been hypocritical or judgmental? You know it is not
our place to judge or be sin managers.
The Bible says in Philippians 2:12b,
‘continue to work out your salvation
with fear and trembling.’ As we keep
our eyes focused on God and follow Christ, we will not become those
‘elephants’ – we will be true children of
God.” Close in prayer.
Matthew 7:1-5 – Who were the

How did He call us out? (Don’t judge;
take care of yourself before you call
out someone else.)
Say something like, “There are lots of
‘elephants’ in our world, in our country,

them dress like a homeless person
and stand outside your church asking for money.)

Confidence; In Christ
Objective
Students will be encouraged to place
their confidence and trust fully in
Jesus Christ.
Warm Up
Start by blindfolding a volunteer
without telling him or her why. Once
the blindfold is secured, hand the
volunteer a book and explain that for
the next two minutes he or she is to
tell the group what the book is about.
When the time is up, have someone
else come up to describe the book
without a blindfold.
Transition
Ask: “What was the difference
between the two? Who was more
confident in their answer? Why?”
Explain that this is a picture of what
many Christians experience. They
start off the day feeling confident in
their faith and how they will interact
with the world. However, before long
their confidence wanes a bit. The
world is hostile to the things of God.
In addition, Christians have their own
struggles. We feel as though we are
walking through life with a blindfold
on trying to figure out how the story
is unfolding. The truth is God has not
led us blindly, but rather He has purposefully led the way, through Christ,
so we can be confident in who we
are and what He has done for us.
With this understanding, nothing will
shake us.
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides. Tell the
students you are going to play the
song twice. Ask them to listen carefully
and write down words or phrases that
jump out at them. Then have them
write down what in the song encourages them to place their confidence
and trust fully in Jesus Christ.
Transition
Discuss:
•What are some of the things you
wrote down?
•What is encouraging about the song?
Explain that the Bible gives a powerful picture about what God does
for our daily lives. This is important
because it helps us keep the blindfold off our eyes so that we can
clearly see our role each day. We
might feel out of place, but God has
not left us alone in this world.
Bible Study
Ask a couple of volunteers to read
1 Peter 2:9-12 aloud. Talk through
these questions:
•What does this text show us about our
relationship to God? (God has chosen us and loves us. We have been
brought out of darkness into light)
•What does this text tell us about how
we are to live in the world? (Avoid
sinful desires; live good lives so that
accusations can’t stand up.)
•How does this point to the importance of trust and confidence in
Jesus Christ? (In Him we are able to
go from darkness to light because He
is the light of the world.)

Have students write a sin they are
dealing with on a piece of toilet paper!
Have them stick it in their pocket for

them if they are nervous or if it bothers
them to have their sin just sitting there
in their pocket – where it could fall out
and someone else could see it?

Objective
Students will realize that mirrors
reflect their outer appearance but
do not reflect all of who God made
them to be.
Warm Up
Get a handheld mirror and put some
chairs in a circle. Tell the students to
make a face in the mirror and then
pass the mirror to the next person.
That person then mimics the face
of that person – without laughing or
breaking up. Give each student about
two seconds to accomplish this. If they
pause or laugh, they are out.
Transition
Discuss:
•If you had a magic mirror, what would
you want it to tell you about yourself?
•How do people let mirrors be the final
judge of who they are?
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides. Play
“Tell Me Mirror” by I Am Empire. The
song focuses on a guy in a Christian
band who is asking himself hard
questions. You can sense that the
person singing does not see himself
as worthy to sing but, in the end,
finds the hope to carry on.
Bible Study
Moses was called by God to set
Israel, God’s chosen people, free
from slavery and Pharaoh’s hand.
The image God saw and the image
Moses saw were different. God
saw in Moses the perfect candidate
for this important task. Moses saw
himself as a wreck and offered many
excuses why he should not be chosen. Familiarize yourself with Exodus
2-4 before teaching.
Exodus 4:1 – The first excuse Moses
offered was, “What if they do not
believe me?” Have you ever looked
in the mirror and lacked confidence?
Moses needed confidence to handle
the task and God supplied him with
a staff that became a snake. Today,
you may fear that if you talk to your
friends about God and His desire to
set them free, they will think you are
crazy; but God is still equipping us.
The Bible says we have a powerful
weapon in our testimony (Revelation
12:11) of what God has already done
in our lives. Look in the mirror; you’re
not the same person!
had an answer. God identified Aaron
as the guy to do the speaking (Exodus 4:14-17). The good news is you
never have to go out alone. Jesus
said (John 16:12-15) that God would
give His Holy Spirit to guide you into
all the truth and would give you the
words to say when it was time to

Faith
Objective
Students will understand that only a
little bit of faith is needed to do great
and mighty things.
Warm Up
You will need a willing volunteer, a
metal folding chair, and a blindfold
for this activity. Place a metal chair in
the middle of the room and have your
volunteer sit in it. Then, have him or
her stand up. Blindfold the volunteer.
Rattle the chair as if you were moving it around, but don’t actually move
it. Tell the volunteer to have a seat
again without using his or her hands
or anything to feel around for the chair.
Discuss with the group why the person
was apprehensive about sitting down
when they couldn’t see the chair even
though they knew that it would support them.
Transition
Explain that William James, an American philosopher, once said, “Faith isn’t
faith until it’s all you are holding on to.”
It is only when we let go of control and
allow God to take over that our faith
does remarkable things.
The Song
“Only a Mountain” explains just how far
a little faith can take you. It also offers
encouragement that we don’t have to
run from our fears; rather, with God
we can meet our fears head on and
conquer them all. Play the song. As
students listen, have them write down
lyrics that relate to them. (You may
want to print the lyrics out for them
as well.)
Transition
Discuss with the students the lyrics
they wrote down and why they relate
to them. Then say, “Jason faced many
obstacles and fears when he went
on American Idol. It is not easy to go
on reality television and live out your
faith in front of millions of people. In
the same way, it is also very difficult to
daily live out your Christian walk when
the obstacles in front of you seem far
too big to climb.”
Bible Study
Have students read the verses in this
section. As they read each passage,
have the students write the answers to
the questions under Fear Not, Have
Faith on the Student Guide.

Matthew 17:14-21 – Jesus was called
to heal a man’s son who was possessed by a demon. The man had
brought his son to the disciples, but
they were unable to heal him. When
Jesus cast the demon out, the disciples asked Him why they had failed.
Jesus simply replied that their lack of
faith had prevented it. In this case, it
wasn’t a lack of belief, but more a lack
of crediting the proper source of their
power: God. Too often we look at our
obstacles and try to conquer them by
our own power and faith in ourselves
instead of turning to our faith in God
and allowing Him to work. When we
trust in Him, we can move mountains:
•What mountains are you currently
trying to climb by yourself?
•How can you allow God to help you
scale that mountain in your life?
Faith in ourselves instead of faith in
God is not the only reason we fail
to climb our mountains. Fear often
causes us to run from our problems or
to try to find a way around them.
2 Timothy 1:5-7 – Timothy was facing
many mountains of his own. Emperor
Nero was actively persecuting Christians. Many people in the Ephesian
church resented Timothy’s leadership,
and false teachers were attacking his
ministry. Paul, however, encouraged
Timothy and reminded him that God
did not give us a spirit of fear. Fear is
one of many tools that Satan uses to
prevent us from following God’s will.
•Describe a time when you let fear
lead you away from where God
wanted you.
•What fears are keeping you from
pursuing God’s will for your life?
•How can you overcome those fears
and climb your mountains?
Wrap Up
Say, “You may be asking, ‘So what?
Why should I deal with my fears and
my mountains? After all, I’m only one
person.’ Facing these mountains can
be nothing short of intimidating. We
often feel that we are alone in our
struggles and we are afraid of what
facing these obstacles might cost
us. But you can be assured that God
has a plan for you and His plan may
involve using you to bring someone to
Christ. By relying on God and having
faith in Him to pull you through, you
never need to run from your mountains.
You can tell them to move or even fall.”
As you pray with your students, have
them write down one “mountain” they
are going to take on in the coming
days and weeks. Pray for their guidance and their faith to trust in God to
take care of them during their climb.

Jesus’ ministry and learn that He was
more than just a man and therefore
deserving to be the One they follow.
Warm Up
Indian Chief (or the Rhythm Game) –
Everyone is in a circle. One person
closes his or her eyes or steps out of
the room. The leader chooses a secret
leader – the Indian Chief. Be sure to
choose quietly so the “guesser” can’t
hear you. The Indian Chief begins an
action such as snapping fingers, patting
the tummy, or slapping knees, and
everyone in the circle imitates the Chief.
The guesser returns and tries to figure
out who the Indian Chief is within three
guesses. As the guesser looks around,
the secret leader should change the
action without being detected.
Transition
Discuss: For those who had to guess
who the Indian Chief was, what made
it easier or harder to figure it out? For
those were in on the secret, what was
the main thing that you had to do to
keep the leader’s secret identity?
The Song
Hand out the Student Guides and
say, “We’re going to talk about what
being a follower of Christ means, and
to start us off, we’re going to listen to
‘Jesus of Nazareth’ by Martin Smith.
As we listen to this song, you’ll
hear references to multiple Biblical
accounts concerning Jesus and His
interaction with people. Use your
handout to write down some of the
characters that are referred to.” Play
the song.
Transition
Ask: What characters were referred to
in this song? (Angels at Jesus’ birth,
Joseph, blind man, Pharisees, Mary
Magdalene, demons) Which part of the
song stood out to you most? Why?
Bible Study
Say, “Let’s take a look at a few
different Scripture passages to learn
more about who Jesus is and some
of the reactions people had toward
Him.” Break students up into groups
of 2-3 and have each group look
up one or two of these passages:
Matthew 4:18-22; Mark 5:1-12;
Matthew 16:24-25; Luke 23:32-43;
Luke 19:1-10; Luke 2:8-15. Have
them answer the following questions
about their passage(s):
•What is Jesus’ role in this passage?
•What is the response of the main
person or people to Jesus?
When they’re finished working, ask
them to give a brief explanation
of their passage and answer the
questions. For groups with more than
one passage, have them share just
one passage to begin with, and then,
after each group has shared, come
back to them to share the second
passage. After each group has
shared, take a look at the following
passages together:
James 2:18-20 – Say, “According
to this passage, it’s not just about
believing that God exists. James says
the even the demons believe that.
The real questions are, ‘Who is God?’
and ‘Who is Jesus?’ What will your
response be to both?”
Look up John 6:60-69 and, going
around the room, have each
student read a verse until all the
verses are read.
Wrap Up
Close by saying, “Jesus is our
source of purpose. We see from
the responses of these different
characters in the Bible that they
chose to follow Christ – not
because they were forced to, but
because they recognized who He
was. We started off with the Indian
Chief game as a way of learning
to follow someone’s lead. God
has sent His Son Jesus Christ to
show us how to follow Him. It’s not
always easy, but it’s the only source
of eternal life. Being a follower of
Jesus is a serious commitment and
will involve sacrifice. I promise you,
though, it is well worth it as Christ
has come to set us free from sin.”
Close in prayer.
Say, “What Jesus teaches us is
sometimes very hard to do because
we are naturally sinful people. In this
passage we see that many people
who claimed to be followers of Jesus
decided it was too hard and they
chose to go their own way. I love

Warm Up
Distribute the Student Guide. Encourage the students to work in pairs on
the I’ll Love You If… section, and
then bring the group back together
once the exercise is completed.
Transition
Discuss:
•What is the difference between conditional and unconditional love?
•What percentage of the world do you
guess practices unconditional love
versus conditional love?
•Why is it easier to love conditionally?
•Why is it so easy to limit God’s love?
Say, “As people limited by sin, we
find it much easier to think about love
only in the way the world defines it. As
a result, we start putting our trust in
people, things, and circumstances. In
this lesson we are going to explore the
unimaginable and unconditional love
of God. We will discover the character
of this love and how we can let it be
our hope and strength in an unfair and
uncertain world.”

Let your group know the song being
played today is by a group called
Salvador. Explain that this song was
originally a big radio hit and was
most likely written with a person in
mind. Salvador puts this song in a
new light and lets it speak of God’s
love. Encourage your students to
complete the God Loves Us exercise while they listen to “Higher
Love.”

•What are some of the ways you
heard God’s love described?
•What is the most difficult part of
God’s love for you to understand?
•What is the most difficult part of
God’s love for many of your friends or
people in general to understand?

Say, “Grasping the full extent of God’s
love is very difficult. We too easily
try to compare it with our own love.
Even in the best of examples the
comparison will fall short. He is God
and we are not. The Bible offers us
many insights into God’s amazing love.
Today we will examine one of these.
Paul describes the character of God’s
love in his prayer for the people of
Ephesus. In this passage we will gain a
better understanding of that love.”
Bible Study
Guide your youth in opening their
Bibles to Ephesians 3:14-21. Give
the students a reasonable amount of
time to work on the Deep and Wide
exercise and then come back together.
Work through each of the questions
and ask students to share their discoveries. Follow up the exercise with
these questions:
•What is the importance of the Holy
Spirit’s power in understanding the
love of God?
•What is God able to do according to
verses 20-21?
•Why does this give us great hope?
Wrap Up
Say something like, “The songwriter
says, ‘Things look so bad everywhere,
in this whole world, what is fair? We
walk blind, we try to see, falling behind
in what could be.’ God’s love takes us
to a higher level and reminds us we
can have hope in the midst of difficulties. We can trust Him.”
Direct your students to the Q&A section. When they have completed this
solo exercise, offer a prayer that commissions them to further understand
God’s indescribable love and to share
that love with others.

Invite your group to share some about
their friends. Ask them about some of
the best things their friends have done
for them, and about how they have

people in our lives who were once
friends but are no longer. Somehow
these friendships were broken. What
happened in some of your relationships?” You can really help your group
by sharing a story or two of your own
broken friendships.

We often think that our relationship with God is like those with our
friends; that it ebbs and flows over
time. Sometimes we feel close, other
times we feel distant, and sometimes
the relationship is completely broken.

we have done something so bad

Bible Study
The chorus repeats, “You’re never too far
gone.” Let’s take some time to look at
some stories from the Bible that might
help us better understand this phrase.
David – He is often held up as one of
the great heroes of our faith. With faith
he fought the giant and became king
of Israel. David was a man after God’s
own heart, and many would say that
God was his friend. But David also
had some difficult times in his life. One
had to do with the wife of one of his
soldiers. Ask your students if they can
recount this story to you; if not, do so
yourself. It is found in 2 Samuel 11.
•What were the consequences of what
he did? (2 Samuel 12:1-14 – the
child died and David was rebuked by
the prophet Nathan)
•What happened to the relationship after
this event? (It was restored. His sins
were forgiven, and God continued to
bless him. Remember Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise to David that
a king will always sit on the throne.)
Peter – He was one of the disciples,
and was quick to say what was on his
mind and act on it. Yet his relationship with Jesus was strained just after
Jesus was arrested. Ask your group if
they remember the story and can tell it
to you; if not, do so yourself. Use the
story from John 18:15-18, 25-27.
•What in this story might have
caused a rift between Peter and
Jesus? (He three times denied ever
knowing Him.)
•What might have caused a rift
between Saul (Paul) and God? (He
persecuted the early church. He
approved of the stoning of Stephen.
He arrested Christians and dragged
them from their homes, etc.)
•Were there any consequences? (This
could be a very interesting point of
discussion, but be sure to key in on
the reality that God intervened in his
life to turn him around.)
•What happened to their relationship
after this? (This is truly one of the
shocking points in the Bible; Saul
– the very man who was trying to
destroy the church – became one of
the greatest growers of it.)

world they want to change by taking a
stand for justice.
Warm Up
I’m Sick Of… – For this activity, you
will need butcher/poster paper (preferably white or tan) or a whiteboard
and a handful of markers/dry erase
markers. Say something like, “We
live in a pretty messed up world.
There are some things that I wish just
didn’t exist such as bullying, abuse,
and low self-esteem. I’m just sick
of these kinds of things. What I want
you guys to do is think about some
things that you’re sick of seeing
around you. Be serious; it’s important
that this isn’t taken lightly. Then, I
want you to grab a marker and write
out what you’re sick of. It can be a
word or a phrase. Either way, just
write it down.” Play some music (not
the “Sick of It” song) while students
write down their responses. If students seem stumped, write down
something that you think of to help
the process. Keep going until you
have many responses.
Transition
Discuss how we can overlook a lot of
the responses on the board because
they are so common. Ask students
to explain some of the ‘sick of’
responses. For example, “I’m sick of
Anxiety because it has been affecting my daily routine” could be a
response. Always give an example to
lead students into further, deeper discussion. Then let students know that
Skillet’s song “Sick of It” is exactly
what they are feeling towards the
responses they’ve come up with.
The Song
The song “Sick of It” by Skillet is their
first released single from their newest
album, Rise. The song is an anthem
against mediocrity, against worldly
things, and against standing by while
allowing those things to continue.
Play the song and have students fill
out the Lingering Lyrics section on
their handouts.
Transition
Spend time in discussion over
some of the lyrics that stood out to
some of the students. Ask them to
describe how the song made them
feel – angry, happy, pumped up, etc.
Discuss what students think the
message of the song is overall.

Say something like, “We often stand by
and allow ourselves to accept what
the world has to offer. However, we
aren’t called to be worldly; we’re called
to be holy.” Pass out Bibles. Have student volunteers read the verses aloud,
and have the students fill out the Student
Guide section called The Word Says.
Romans 12:2 – Do not conform
to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your
mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God’s will is—His good,
pleasing and perfect will.
Isaiah 1:17 – Learn to do right. Seek
justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up
the cause of the fatherless. Plead the
case of the widow.
Discuss with students what these two
verses mean.
•Do they go hand in hand? If yes, how
and why?
•Why are we called to not conform to
this world?
•What is justice?
•Why do we need to stick up for people who are being oppressed
by others?
Mention that if we want change, it has
to start with us.
Wrap Up
Christians are called to be set apart
from this world. We need to stand
up to the things we’re sick of – the
things that are not right, not good,
not true. Have students take a
moment to look at the responses
that were written down on the
whiteboard/sheet. Have students
complete the Take A Stand section
on their Student Guide and challenge
them to stand up against worldly
acts, thoughts, ideals, etc. Pray and
end with students either erasing
the whiteboard or crossing out the
words/phrases on the butcher/poster
paper as a symbolic statement to
take a stand against the things
they’re sick of.

Read Job 1:1-5. Here are some questions to ask the students:

Read Job 1:13-19 and discuss:
•Did all of Job’s wealth truly make him
secure against the storms of life?
•Is there anything that we can do to
prevent tragedy from happening?
•Knowing that things go wrong in life,
how can you be ready to respond
when difficulties come?
Read Job 1:19-22. Ask:
•In those verses, we see that Job
didn’t charge God with wrongdoing,
but how often do we blame God
when things go wrong in our lives?
Wrap Up
Explain that Job was able to remain
faithful through the trials because of
his faith. Job understood that God was
the only firm foundation in his life. As a
result of his faithfulness, God restored
him, his family, and his wealth. No
matter what happens in our lives, God
wants us to remain faithful.
Keeping that in mind, we refer to
Hebrews 11:6 – “And without faith it is
impossible to please Him, for whoever
would draw near to God must believe
that He exists and that He rewards
those who seek Him.”
Close in prayer.
Read through the lyrics of the song to
create some discussion.
•What do you define as a “blessing”?
•(If the answer is something material) Does that mean people who
have very little or nothing at all are
not blessed?
•Can material possessions provide
security?
•Can material possessions keep us

As 2010 began, I had no idea I would write another
song or make another record again. I felt deep down
I wanted to but I wasn’t sure if I had anything to say.
Writers block is usually associated with isolation;
you withdraw from community, people, normal life,
and you quickly find you have nothing to say.
But
life with God is the opposite. It’s impossible to have
nothing to say because He is always speaking and
the world is always speaking about God – through
word, conversation, creation, media, friends, tragedy, kids dancing, and even silence.
Because God is alive, there will always be a
brand new conversation to be had everyday. He’s
our friend and so He wants to talk. If you always
remain plugged into a local church, a “God” conversation or miracle is always ongoing and so
songs are never far away. You can hear God’s
voice anytime, anywhere and in any way because
He always wants to speak into our present with
something eternal.
The songs on these EP’s are my prayers really,
conversations with the Almighty. “Back to the
Start,” “Take Me,” “I’m All I Can Bring,” “Catch
Every Teardrop,” and so on. Just conversations
with God, my friend, knowing that He knows and
always astounded at how kind He can be.
I’m very proud of the team that has helped me
put this music together; we have all benefited
from being in each other’s lives and I will never
forget how they threw themselves into the
unknown. I think of Jonny Bird and I hear his guitar sounding great through the studio monitors
and see his face light up, or Sarah Bird singing
one of her first times in the studio and feeling like
we’d seen a glimpse into her future. Jake Isaac
bringing loops to help a white boy groove. Josh
and Ben playing with guts and abandon – and all
the time I’m recalling my children dancing in and
out of the studio while Anna made her amazing
mocha frappuccinos for us all.
I’m glad of the title, God’s Great Dance Floor. It’s
time for me to learn to dance again. I’m a terrible
dancer and if I am at a party with Anna I would
rather sit at the side with all the blokes and talk
about cars. But there’s freedom in letting go. I’m
done with holding it all together, being respectable.
I’d rather be like King David now, ready to jump
for joy because someone saved my life, because
Jesus dared to believe in me, because He saw
something in me He loved.
Church has become too boring again, preferring to
pursue “perfection” or “excellence” than celebrate
our faith with the passion and excitement that kids
have. We have to continually find ways of sucking
out the “religion” from our meetings and ourselves.
Church must be the home for the homeless, the
broken, the joyful, the grateful, and the saved.
When we have this we will stop noticing that the
band was off key or the heating was broken or that
we didn’t get to sing our favorite song. “Excellence”
is overrated; I’d rather have passion any day.
So if you do one thing this year, open your heart,
move your feet a little, and be more childlike. We
will only ever feel alive when we are alive in Him.

Returning to Christ
Teaching Point:
Guarding your heart is so important, especially
concerning relationships.
Teaching Point:
Return to your first love.
Opening Questions:
Have you “loved and lost?” Do you think it’s better to “have loved and lost than to never have
loved at all?”
Discussion:
Relationships are all about intimacy. Think of “intimacy” as “into me see.” The keys to intimacy are
honesty and attentiveness. Bruno Mars hits on
this in his lyric, “I should have bought you flowers
and held your hand
, Should have gave you all my
hours when I had the chance,
Take you to every
party cause all you wanted to do was dance.”
Knowing someone well enough to know what fills
their hearts and then putting yourself aside, or
laying down your life, to do those things for them,
or to simply spend time focused on them (attentive to their needs) is the point.
The enemies of intimate relationship are also spelled
out in Bruno’s lyrics. “My pride, my ego, my needs,
and my selfish ways, caused a good strong woman
like you to walk out my life.” Pride is more than being
boastful, sometimes it manifests itself in an attitude
that you have everything all together and are doing
everything perfectly. It takes humility to open yourself
to honest transparent communication from which
your friend or significant other will be able to see your
faults and imperfections. You can only be as intimate
as you are honest with the other person.
You may not have anyone that you feel safe enough to
be honest and transparent with. The amazing truth is
that Jesus laid down his life for you—died on a cross
just so he could be intimate with you. Jesus loves you
deeply and greatly and wants to know all of you – the
good, the bad, and the not so pretty. This relationship,
too, has to be maintained. We need to be present and
attentive to Jesus on a regular basis. In Revelation
2 a church is called out for this very situation. Jesus
praises the church for doing a lot of good things, persevering and enduring for His name’s sake, but, He
holds one thing against them – “You have left your first
love. Therefore remember from where you have fallen,
repent, and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am
coming to you and will remove your lamp-stand out of
its place — unless you repent.”
Conclusion:
Have you fallen out of intimate relationship with
Jesus? You simply need to fall in love again, and
do those things you did when you first fell in love.
Obviously you will not give Jesus flowers, but He
will hold your hand and dance with you!
Opening Question:
How does the World entice you to stray away
from your faith? What causes you to follow the
World? Have you ever strayed from Christ only to
wish that you were back in His arms?
Discussion:
We are often deceived by the World’s lies. The
World tell us that in order to be accepted we need
to look a certain way, wear certain clothes, go to
certain parties, and act certain ways with our boyfriends or girlfriends. The World masks these lies
with peer pressure, bright lights, or even the promise of possessions or popularity. The problem with
sin is it’s pretty, it’s inviting, and it looks like a lot
of fun. If sin looked ugly and if sin told you what
it would cost you in the end, avoiding sin would
be a lot easier. That is why resisting the World’s
temptation is so hard.
We fall for the world’s lies a lot more than we
want to admit. The lights and the glamour is not
always what it’s cracked up to be. This song by
Darius Rucker tells of a musician who followed the
glamour of the lights and the allure of the big cities, only to become penniless and wishing that he
could come home to the ones he loved.
Luke 15:11-24 tells a very similar story. Most
people know the parable as “The Prodigal Son.”
Jesus told about a man’s son who asked for his
inheritance from his father, only to go out and
blow it all on the vices of the World. Just like us,
the World lied to the prodigal son and left him with
nothing. However, there was redemption for the
prodigal son as he began the long road back to
his home with his dad. The son expected to be
one of his father’s servants – but instead, a great
feast was prepared in honor of his return. The
father welcomed him back with open arms and
celebrated his son’s return.
Conclusion:
In what ways are you like the prodigal son?
How can you turn your life around and begin
living for Christ again? What are some of the
things you need to give up in order to return
to a Christ-like life?
Opening Questions:
Why don’t many relationships last very long in
middle school, high school, and even college? What
type of damage is caused by people giving their
hearts away so easily? How many girls/guys do you
know that are labeled as “players” at your school? Is
that something you would want to be labeled?
Discussion:
Demi Lovato’s song “Heart Attack” has an
interesting take on how we should guard our
hearts. At one point, she says that “when I don’t
care, I can play ’em like a Ken doll” –referencing
that she has no problem playing with other’s
emotions, but when it comes to her, she doesn’t
want to get heartbroken. However, she talks
about not wanting to fall in love because she
thinks she might have a “heart attack” (broken
heart.) Relationships are so dysfunctional today
because, many times, we view them like a game;
this causes pain to those involved, and sets up
an unhealthy view of relationships.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.” Why is guarding our heart so important, according to this verse?
Demi’s song states that she puts her defenses up
because she doesn’t want to fall in love –however,
she’s fighting the desire to impress this guy by
painting her nails, wearing high heels, and doing her
hair up. If we examine why she doesn’t want to fall
in love, listeners are conflicted with the impression
that she enjoys playing heart games with others and
feels that since the tables have turned and her heart
might get played, she is hesitant. Again, this view
of “hurt or get hurt” seems to be the only options;
however, we must strive to put our heart, as well as
others’hearts in the proper place of protection.
Conclusion:
We can get so caught up in playing games with
people’s hearts that we forget that our hearts are
too valuable to give away easily. We must strive
to protect them from emotional and spiritual harm.
Along with guarding our own hearts, we must realize that we have no right to attack others’hearts
in the process. If everything we do flows from our
heart, what kind of impact do we want to make
on other people; positive or negative? The answer
shows a person’s character. Pray that you guard
your heart while respecting others’.

Sometimes we have these things, these relationships,
which are just straight madness. This is something
that we all deal with, whether they are really crazy
or just a little bit of madness. It’s unfortunate that in
this world that we have to deal with these things –but
because we do, we should learn how to handle them.
What does the Bible say about these relationships
–not just with people, but also with items or activities?
Colossians 3:5 reads, “Put to death, therefore,
whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual
immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed,
which is idolatry.” What does that mean for those
relationships –hat we should kill everyone we have
a “mad” relationship with? No, not at all, but it
does mean that we should seriously consider what
relationships we should have. For those “mad”
items and activities though, we do NEED to put
those things to death and get rid of them!
Philippians 4:8 reads, “Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is
admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—
think about such things.” Yes, this verse is talking
about filling our minds with these things, but what
if we look at it from a relationship standpoint? Fill
your relationships with whatever is true, noble, right,
pure, lovely, admirable, and anything excellent
or praiseworthy. Relationships look a lot different
then, don’t they? This also can relate directly to our
relationships with material items and the activities
we have in our lives—put to death any “mad”
relationships that have to do with the earthly nature,
and then fill your relationships with whatever is true,
noble, right, etc! Get it?!
Conclusion:
Lets think again: What relationships do we have that
are “madness?” These relationships can be not just
with people, but items and activities as well! In the
end, that begs the question, what relationships do
you need to get rid of? Though doing so won’t be
painless or fun, it is something that we need to do!
