Summer is here and I believe we can look back on this past year at the Woodbury Jewish Center
with much pride and satisfaction for the meaningful programs, classes, events and services that
transformed and elevated your spiritual lives. I look forward to your comments as my weekly blog
continues each Thursday, and I encourage you to attend our minyanim and Shabbat services
whenever you are available.
In response to your requests and suggestions, I am offering a series in my Jewish Film Institute
during July. I hope you will share with me these fascinating films from the United Kingdom. I want

“Generally regarded as Jack Rosenthal's masterpiece, Bar Mitzvah Boy follows the fears and trepidations of a young Jewish boy as he approaches his Bar Mitzvah. First broadcast in the BBC’s
landmark Play for Today slot, this feature-length comedy-drama was taken to the nation’s heart
more than any other screen portrait of Jewish life before or since (much to Rosenthal’s surprise).
Eliot Green (Jeremy Steyn) finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of caterers, guest lists, hairdressers and Torah study as Maria Charles’ endearingly fussy matriarch Rita prepares him for the
most important day of his life (no pressure!). Exhausted dad Victor (Bernard Spear) and elder sister Lesley (Adrienne Posta) take a more serene
approach, but Eliot’s about to experience an acute
case of cold feet. Affectionately satirising the rituals of Jewish community and debunking the myth of adulthood, Rosenthal’s witty time capsule of 1970s Britain is
still irresistible three decades on.

Suzie Gold is a 2004 British film starring American actress, Summer Phoenix. It is the directorial debut of Ric
Cantor. The film stars Summer Phoenix as the title character, in the role of a young Jewish woman living in
London with a sister who is about to marry a young Jewish man. Breaking with the ideas of her traditionally
orthodox family, Suzie falls in love with Darren (Leo Gregory), who happens not to be Jewish. She fears introducing him to her family because of their opposition to marrying outside of one's faith.

“A Jewish Londoner embarks on a journey to find himself after learning some shocking news about
his past in this eccentric British comedy. As the film begins, Leon (Mark Frankel) is already in a time
of transition, having quit his job for moral reasons and assumed a position in his mother's catering
firm. His life is thrown into even more disarray when a bizarre coincidence reveals the truth behind
his birth: not only was his birth the result of artificial insemination, but a lab mix-up means that his
real, biological father is a complete stranger. The confused Leon sets out to find his "real" dad, and
unexpectedly discovers that he is descended from a family of Yorkshire pig farmers. Co-directors
Vadim Jean and Gary Sinyor move their story in fits and starts, allowing room for countless digressions, from a torrid affair with a outrageous artist (Maryam d'Abo) to the accidental breeding of a rather unique pig. While the film proves uneven, fans of the quirkier varieties of British comedy should
find Leon the Pig Farmer's off-beat tone and taste for surrealistic details suitably entertaining”

THE CANTOR’S VOICE
On the evening of August 4th we begin to observe the holiday of Tisha B’Av, the 9th of
Av, commemorating the destruction of the Holy Temples in Jerusalem in 586 BCE
and 70 CE. We read the Book of Lamentations to a somber, soulful melody while
sitting on the floor by candlelight. Many customs of mourning are followed during the
observance of Tisha B’Av. Wherever Jews have lived in exile they have gathered to
pray on Tisha B’Av to mourn the loss of the Temples and to recite prayers of hope for
return and restoration of the Temple.
In Israel many people return to the Western Wall to read the Book of Lamentations at
the very site where the Temples stood. Out of much sorrow and destruction the incredible modern State of Israel was created.
I will be leading our congregation on an amazing trip to Israel this coming December break, beginning our journey in
breathtaking Jerusalem. We will have the opportunity to visit the Old City and I will lead a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service at
Robinson’s Arch and the Western Wall for all participants. We will visit the Kotel tunnels and see excavations done
where the Temples stood. We will see the revitalization of the Old City and Jewish quarter. We will visit David’s city,
Herodian, the
incredible Israel museum, the beautiful Chagall windows, exciting Tel Aviv, unique Mitzpe Rimon
and Masada, explore the Dead Sea and Negev regions, amazing Caesarea, Beersheva, sunny Eilat, participate in an
archaeological dig , a Red Sea cruise plus much more then return for Shabbat in Jerusalem before we return.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
This past month I was at Aleph consecration, Hey graduation, and a Shavuot
service honoring our high school graduates. All of these end of year events signify
that summer has finally arrived! Just as road crews are out fixing potholes, we at
the Woodbury Jewish Center are working hard to mend, build, and bond by offering some wonderful events over the next few months.
On Saturday, July 12th our Men’s Club will be throwing their annual summer BBQ.
It’s a fantastic, fun-filled evening with great friends, music, food, and drink. As they did last year,
congregants Adrianne and Eric Roth have graciously offered to host the event in their beautiful
backyard. It’s a party not to be missed! Please mark your calendar and join us.
On Monday, July 21 the Men’s Club is having a golf outing at Mill Pond Golf Course in Medford.
This year we are joining the Men’s Clubs of Midway and Plainview Jewish Centers. It should be a
great day (when is golfing on a Monday not great?). Foursomes are still available. Please contact
Men’s Club president Mark Minsky at: mgminsky@aol.com for both events.
A few Friday Shabbat services over the summer will be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Park in
Oyster Bay as we’ll be “Praying at the Bay”. It’s a unique and peaceful way to welcome the Shabbat. Check the Green sheets and this SHOFAR for dates.
In the fall, get your mats out because Sisterhood will be offering yoga classes on Thursday nights
and Friday mornings led by Sandy Schoenbart. All are welcome, watch the green sheet for upcoming details.
In my last Shofar article, I touched on how the WJC is a family: there to support one another in
times of need. As I wrote those words, I didn’t realize how personal it would become. You do not
always realize these things or appreciate them fully in good times. As you know, I recently lost my
father, and I want to thank my WJC family for all they have done to help and comfort me as I
mourn him. Thank you to Rabbi Adler and Cantor Cohen for being there for me in my time of
need. The outpouring of support of all kinds—but especially people just being with me—made me
grateful yet again for my second home, the Woodbury Jewish Center.
On Friday, May 16th we had a family Shabbat with dinner and a magician for the children. It was
a night full of young families meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. My gratitude goes
out to David and Lisa Sakhai for their generous sponsorship of this extremely successful evening.
I also wish to thank Adrianne Roth and Robin Schorr for all their help in orchestrating the details
that made this Shabbat so special.
This past June 6th and 7th, we had our first ever women’s Shabbat. A special thank you to Sharon
Konits for organizing this event. I look forward to the next one.

MEN’S CLUB NEWS
Hi Everyone,
Hope you are enjoying the summer. The Men’s Club has planned two events for
you this summer.
In a few nights, Saturday, July 12th we will be holding our second summer barbeque with dancing under the stars at the home of Adrianne and Eric Roth. If you
attended last summer, you know what a warm, friendly event that was. We
thank the Roths for opening their home once again. Ask your friends who attended last year’s event to describe what an amazing night it was with good friends,
an extensive, never ending barbeque, an open bar and a live DJ, all at a very
attractive price. We want you to come and enjoy a laid back night with your WJC friends. This is not a
fund raiser. As the rsvp date is coming up, if you want to have a fabulous evening, we must hear from you
soon. See the invitation on the cover of this Shofar.
A golf outing at the Mill Pond Golf Course (in Medford) will be held on Monday July 21st along with the
Men’s Clubs of Midway and Plainview Jewish Centers. This will be an initial endeavor to expand our local
community in a meaningful way. If golf is your thing, consider signing up. The cost, at $195, covers 18
holes of golf, lunch, driving range, a golf cart and dinner.

know by Harry Warren just goes on and on. Harry’s story, as presented by Bob Spiotto, was both entertaining and memorable. Many of us were singing along throughout the presentation.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS
July and August provide many of us with a quieter and slower pace of living. Our children
are in camp and we’re at the beach enjoying a best-selling novel. It is a time to rest and
reflect. We think about the achievements of our children during the past school year. Studies show that students succeed when teachers are creative and interesting, when classroom
lessons are exciting and fun, when a myriad of special events and programs outside the
classroom offer enriching hand-on experiences and when parents are committed and supportive. We have good reason to be proud of our religious school. Below are some of the
grade activities and special events that enhanced the classroom learning experience for our
students.
Children in kindergarten through grade 2 were joined by parents for Chanukah and Purim
Family Education Funshops. They made their own matza at the Matza Bakery program and
entertained the residents at Gurwin for Tu B’Shevat. In addition, they enjoyed attending
monthly Shabbat Family services and loved Pajama Day.
Specialty programs in the Alef grade included the Shofar Factory, which gave our third graders the chance to make a real shofar
from a ram’s horn. A week later, they sounded it on Rosh Hashanah. Their parents joined them for a Tefillah workshop, where
they received a copy of Cantor Cohen’s prayer CD. The highlight of their year was Consecration, when they presented a cantata of
songs and poems and were given their own siddur.
There were three special programs for our fourth graders. Early in the year, they participated in a Havdalah workshop where they
made a spice box and ceremonial candle used to bid the Sabbath farewell on Saturday evenings. Our Bet students enjoyed dressing in costumes and presenting an entertaining Bible play. Bet Shabbat, held in May, gave our students the opportunity to demonstrate to family and friends all the prayers they mastered in grades Alef and Bet.
Students in Gimel learned a lot at the Chanukah workshop, where they watched olives pressed into oil for the Chanukiah and
where they fashioned their own menorah. They loved acting in a play presented at a Family Congregation service and had a delicious time making challah with Adrianne Roth. Gimel Shabbat gave them the opportunity to help lead an adult Friday evening service in the sanctuary where they showed knowledge, skill and poise.
This past year, our Daled students participated in a Tefillin workshop and Mitzvah Project Orientation Breakfast. The projects chosen and reported on at the end of the year were thoughtful, creative and meaningful. Our sixth graders gave an incredible performance of their Passover play, which was part of the cultural experiences program for Pesach. Daled Shabbat was a joyous event
for the class when they led an adult Shabbat morning service in the sanctuary. Their Hebrew reading, knowledge of ritual and spirit
were praised by all.
For Hey students, in addition to studying the life cycle, the Holocaust, modern Israel and Jewish ethics, they visited the Holocaust
museum in Manhasset, met a survivor and attended a performance of the Holocaust play, “Voices from the Fires.” Graduation was
a memorable evening marking a minimum of five years of successful study.
Add to the above the following school-wide special events, programs and activities and we can “shep nachas” as a community.
Our students decorated the Sukkah, had Pizza-in-the-Hut, danced with the Torahs on Simchat Torah, enjoyed carnival games at
Chanukah and Purim celebrations, planted trees for Tu B’Shevat and had fun at the Lag B’Omer Field Day & Picnic. Many
students earned participation at Pizza-Movie Night, Pizza-BINGO Night, the Super Bowl party, Miniature Golf outing and Movie &
Dinner with the Principal event.
Every effort is made to give our children positive learning
experiences and to create lasting and joyful memories.
Tell your friends and neighbors about our Religious
School. Encourage them to arrange for their children to
become part of our school and for them to join the WJC
family of congregants.

TISHA B’AV
Monday evening, August 4th-Tuesday, August 5th
The most tragic day in the Jewish year is the Fast of the Ninth of Av (Tisha B’Av). This day of
fasting and mourning commemorates the destruction by the Babylonians of the First Temple in
Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. and of the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 C.E. The destruction
of the Temple, the religious center of the people, was not only a religious disaster; it also
marked the end of the First and Second Jewish Commonwealths respectively, and the exile of
most of the Jewish people from their land.
In subsequent centuries, Tisha B’Av became identified with still other tragic events in the life of
the Jewish people.

TISHA B’AV TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS
Tisha B’Av is a day of total fasting. As on Yom Kippur, eating or drinking anything from before
sundown on the eighth of Av till nightfall on the following day is forbidden.
The following mourning practices are in force on Tisha B'Av:






Not wearing regular leather shoes (footwear made from rubber, cloth, or non-leather
materials is permitted.)
Abstaining from bathing.
Abstaining from shaving.
Abstaining from sexual relations.
Abstaining from studying Torah, for such study gladdens the heart, as it is written “The
precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.” (Psalms 19:9). It is, however, permissible
to read or study such books as Lamentations, Job, selections of Jeremiah, and parts of the
Talmud that deal with the destruction of the Temple or with the laws of mourning.
In the synagogue following the evening services, the
Book of Lamentations (Megillat Aichah) is read in the
mournful chant traditionally associated with it.

Your rabbi wishes to guide and be of
assistance to you in your time of need.
In cases of serious illness or the death of a
loved one: Please call Rabbi Adler at 4969100 X 125 or at home, 509-9481
Please note that you must call the Rabbi
before finalizing funeral arrangements.
On Shabbat or Yom Tov, Rabbi Adler does
not use the telephone. Therefore, you can
convey information to him on these days at
the synagogue during service times, by
calling immediately after Shabbat or Yom
Tov.
The question has been asked “Can the
rabbi and/or cantor charge me for performing a funeral for my parent or sibling?”
The answer is “Yes” they can. Neither the
Rabbi nor the Cantor will charge for performing the Funeral of a member or a member’s
child. In this case a donation to the Discretionary Fund may be appropriate.
However the term “member” does not include
parents or sibling. Thus either is permitted to
charge a fee for officiating at or participating in
a funeral. While local Funeral homes, including Gutterman’s of Woodbury will include or
tell you at the time you make arrangements of
the clergy charge, please feel free to discuss it
with either Rabbi Adler or Cantor Cohen at the
time you make the arrangements with them.
