serj selected works_2014-2016 Serj was born in May 1985 in Bergamo (Italy), where he studied painting at the local art school. In 2005 he moved to Rome, to attend the painting course of Gianfranco Notargiacomo at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, from which he graduated with the highest honors in 2009. For the last 8 years, he has participated and exhibited at several shows, both solo or collectives ones and worked in many different ways, from strictly visual to theoretical ones, from writing to sound, through a progressive methodological research, both formal and linguistic. Since 2015 he lives and works between Berlin and Rome, ‘‘ [...] I consider my work and the relative creative process as a game, where for game I intend the space of possibilities and rules that, as soon as they are formulated, are being questioned. In the creation of an artwork, the line between what could be called the “design phase” and the “construction phase” is impalpable. It hardly happens to me, to think of a work and then built it following a linear path. What I rather do is accumulate signs (whether sounds, leathers, metal rods, glass or various objects) and put them in relation with each other. Usually, this process is translated into a large accumulation, which is gradually distilled. In this constant game of variables, in which senses and signs are mixed constantly, the conditions that give life to the artwork are created. I always tend to use terms and shapes that have multiple readings and different senses: signs that are unstable. I use these few repeated signs to build what I call instruments “targeting the detachment” (di mira del distacco), artworks aiming to contain the gap that is the common denominator of all my works. It has always been essential for me not to rely upon one medium only. Stretching the possibilities of choice means allowing myself to focus on ideas and develop it, rather than force the medium to obtain uncertain results. I use sound, video, installation and painting to avoid creating useless virtuosity and – at the same time – to boost the aforementioned possibilities of sign. I also noticed that all of these marks move towards the same impressions. I usually try to conceive the work as a tool, as a machine. This does not necessarily imply the use of mechanical devices. I believe that every work of art, through history, can also be considered as machine, if you think about the machine as a device composed of parts able to do something. In my case, whenever I put together different materials, shapes, processes, and parts, it is quite inevitable to end up with machines capable to produce sense on their own. I find these self-generated possibilities very interesting. All these machine-artworks are designed to include the possibility of their own collapse, whether physical (of the structure itself) or purely theoretical. In the straight conception of my discipline, where I intend the artworks as retrospective projects, the collapse or denial of a work is none other than the propellant of the next one. In more than one case and in more than one way, I tried to define the problem related to the genesis of the work, and I observed how the work has the possibility of creating the model from which it is extracted itself. My works are creating hypotheses by and about themselves; therefore these hypotheses are not necessarily confirmable.’’ selected works_2014-2016 TRAP iron, copper, engraved glasses, 2016 installation view at “The Hawt Show”, an outdoor project by Galerie Rolando Anselmi, Borgo Colle Melone (FR) -
