Wests Dragons 42-18 and have set a CARFL record of winning six
premierships in a row.

This report provides an update of current waste management projects.
SUMMARY

Operational

Toolbox meetings are held with waste management facility staff every Tuesday and
Thursday.
Recycling
Total Waste: Total waste collected at the Regional Waste Management Facility (RWMF) for
August 2015 was 2246.94 tonnes (Table 1 and Figure 1). The total waste collected over the
benchmark year (2014/2015) was 2803.67 tonnes.
Total Recycled: Total recycled material for mid-August 2015 period was 123.88 tonnes
compared to 132.42 for 2014/2015 period (Table 1 & Figure 2). Figure 1 compares recycled
material for each month. The accumulated material recycled is 154 tonnes (Figure 3).
Percentage Recycled: Total percentage of materials recycled for the month of August was
5.51%. The percentage recycled material for August 2014 was 4.72% (Table 2).

The Rediscovery Shop income for August 2015 was $11,657.00 in comparison with August

Items in the Rediscovery are recorded from three different streams:
1. Drop-off zone items include anything dropped off directly off at the Rediscovery Centre.
2. Building materials salvaged from landfill
3. Household goods salvaged from landfill
In August 2015 the original total stock intake at the shop was 12.9 tonnes, with 10.12 tonnes
coming from the Drop-off zone, 0.98 tons from “Building materials” (salvaged), and 1.8
tonnes from “Household Goods” (salvaged). Third grade stock (low grade) of 0.3 tonnes of
stock was subsequently returned to the landfill, making the final amount of second hand
goods recycled through the Rediscovery Centre 12.6 tonnes.

Waste News and Other Events
The work crew from Department Corrections collect recyclable from the stock pile (e.g.
wood pallets, bricks, metal sheet and decanted mattresses in total 6.16 tons.
Free disposal of computers and televisions is available to the public on the first Saturday of
each month. The next e waste free drop off day will be on Saturday the 3th October 2015.
The 10c cash for wine and spirit bottles recycling operates at the RWMF each Saturday in
total 17,835.00 bottles were collected in August 2015.

This report provides an update on environmental projects.
Waste Management
•
Submitted an expression of Interest for Australian Packaging Covenant Grant round,
which provides funding for projects that recycle packaging materials. The grant
proposal is for sorting equipment and a sorting area comprising a small Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF). The sorting equipment would enable Council to increase their
recycling rates, providing there is adequate collection of recycling materials through the
RWMF.
The EOI budget was $707,500 with a 30% Council contribution required.
The EOI was successful and a full application will be submitted.

KITES (Kids in Town Engaged in School) tour of RWMF
Energy
•
Library lighting changeover of 314 fluoro lights to energy-efficient LEDs set to be
complete by November.
•
Solar PV on Rediscovery Centre project is underway. 30kW panels will be installed by
November. Panels will generate up to 54,750kWh energy each year, supplying the
majority of energy use through the main energy meter.
Green Army
• Attended Dept Environment information session on Green Army Round 4 and One
•
Million Trees Grant Round 2
Met with Service Provider, CoAct for the Todd River Revitalisation Green Army Project
and finalised plant species list and locations for planting.
Other
•
Hosted stall at the desertSMART Ecofair with information on waste and recycling. The
stall was successful and over the day ancM50 people visited our stall.

Held stall at Todd Mall Night Markets to promote recycling
•
Organising Great Northern Clean Up for 20th September
