Heavy Issue 64 - ScotsGay Magazine
Scotland’s premier magazine for lesbians, gay men. bisexuals and friends ScotsGay 80/- Heavy • Issue 64 • £1 where sold INSIDE THIS ISSUE: SCENE AROUND in EDINBURGH, GLASGOW, DUNDEE and ABERDEEN Garry Otton says GAYS CAN NO LONGER WAR WITH RELIGIONISTS Lots of Pride Scotia photies PLUS: INTERNATIONAL NEWS REVIEWS and FULL LISTINGS 06> 9 770135 705958 2 OF GNOMES AND CLOSETS There's been much amusement here at ScotsGay Towers over the hoax Scottish Executive press release which contained a coming out message from Malcolm Chisholm, the Communities Minister, in which he claimed that he was “gay and in love”. Would that it were true - we could do with some more out and proud politicians at the top of the pile - fuck knows, there are enough of the closeted variety. Anyway, the media and political fallout was predictable: this was treated as a slur on a respectably married family man and Police and IT experts are still running around like headless chickens trying to catch the evil person responsible. Some years ago, I took not inconsiderable flack for outing an MP although I was merely reporting a public meeting where a list of gay MPs had been read out. The MP, now retired, was not a happy man and indignantly wrote to me about the upset it had caused him and his wife. Recently, Ilearned that, prior to their marriage, his wife had perjured herself at the trial of a well known gay activist charged with public naughtiness where a gullible Court believed her tale that she was his girlfriend and ScotsGay News had stopped and the sun came out. At this stage people started to enjoy themselves. After the barbeque many of the group headed into Galashiels for afternoon tea/wine, followed by a fun night out in the town. The lesson for next year: hire a marquee. Borders Outing The sixth annual Borders LGBT barbeque was another washout! Sat 4th Jun dawned bright, but by 1 pm the rain had started. A lesson from last years event was to get at least one barbeque lit and burning well. This was achieved in the now traditional way by using locally gathered dampish kindling. By the time we had savoured such treats as Cumbrian pork satay and Glaswegian nan bread, the rain WaterAid Munro Challenge ScotsGay Editorial Editorial that he couldn't possibly be a player of the Pink Oboe. Good on her! I wish them both a happy retirement together - if their marriage is a sham, it's not really any of our business. If the fluidity of human sexuality has caused their boundaries to shift, then even better - it's always nice to see people being happy together. Things have moved on quite a bit since then and it is a surprise to many that getting it wrong about somebody's sexuality should be such a big deal. If the hoax release had related to Mr Chisholm's (as far as I am aware non-existent) collection of garden The Gay Outdoor Club fielded a team of five people in the WaterAid Munro Challenge on Sat 11th Jun. gnomes, would there have been such a stushie? It's all very silly On the other hand, if a national newspaper were to describe me as heterosexual, I would be deeply hurt and have no alternative than to lodge an immediate action for defamation seeking large damages for the ruination of my life. One's principles should never stand in the way of Free Money! John Hein E-mail: editorial@scotsgay.co.uk everyone who contributed towards the success of this event. Old Pooves The team along with five GOC supporters climbed A' Chailleach (3051ft), Carn Sgulain (3018ft) and Carn Dearg (3100ft), to the north of Newtonmore. The group were blessed with dry weather, sunny spells and a cooling breeze: perfect hillwalking conditions. The target hill, Carn Sgulain, was reached at 1236 pm. After a hard walk, the party even had the energy to enjoy a ceilidh in the evening. WaterAid achieved its target of getting teams on the summits of all the 284 mountains over 3000 feet high in Britain and Ireland. The charity hopes to have raised over £300,000, which will be used to provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene education to needy people in Africa and Asia. Overall the GOC team raised £470: together with a giftaid rebate (£130) this should provide 40 people with a lifetime’s supply of safe water. A big thank you to Caffmos, the Mature Gentleman's Club, has recently become active in Scotland (our pic is of their April meeting). It's an organisation focusing on the older, more mature gay gentleman and his many admirers, be they young or old. In addition to a regular newsletter, contacts list and diary of events and social gatherings, Caffmos has an online community (http://caffmoscommunity.com/) which is not just another dating site but offers a platform for older gay men and their admirers to find support and form new contacts and friendship. For more information, see the Caffmos listing at the back of the magazine. 3 Whether you are buying or selling a house, need a Will drawn up, Investment Advice or are bereaved and need help winding up an estate and want a gay solicitor to do the work, call Donald Reid. 19 Torphichen Street, Edinburgh, EH3 8HX Tel: 0131-228 2828 Fax: 0131-228 2861 E-mail: dr@vmh.co.uk Web Address: http://www.vmh.co.uk/ RISE THE capsule for improved male sexual performance that WON’T let you down For LONGER and HARDER erections 100% Herbal 100% Safe 1000’s of satisfied customers worldwide £4.00 per capsule £17.50 for 5 capsules £30.00 for 10 capsules ORDER NOW for immediate despatch Tel: 01255 507966 Order lines open: 11am – 8pm Weekdays 9am – 12pm Saturdays These hours not convenient? The civil partnership agreement will be followed by a ceremony and reception for family and friends. Evening entertainment from 19:30 for the great and the good and quite a few not so good and really evil will be at the same venue. The theme for the celebration will be “FODS” (Friends of Dorothy) Alec & Frank T: 01592 655392 Email: alecd@blueyonder.co.uk IN SICKNESS and in HEALTH By Roger Burg Why enter a civil partnership? Lots of reasons. But this is only concerned about wills, pensions, Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. If you are not civil partners, and your partner dies, you can loose out seriously, losing pension and savings, and possibly losing your home. That’s why married couples are exempted from these taxes and that’s why civil partners are too. Any state benefits you receive may be reduced. For instance when a couple on state pension gets hitched, they will get only the joint pension, a loss of nearly a quarter, and other government departments have not yet worked out how benefits will be affected. But that’s another matter. Why is failing health so critical? When one partner is in failing health, the other partner soon becomes worn out physically and emotionally with the constant burden of care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They won’t have the time or energy to investigate civil partnership. Their minds will be on other things. While you are reading this, rack your brains to think of partners who really need civil partnership and may miss out, for health reasons. They are the couples we easily forget when they disappear from our social life. They certainly won’t know about Scotland’s procedure for partners who are seriously ill and not likely to recover. Registrars can’t help You can phone your local Registrar’s Office - just use directory enquiries and ask. But at the time of writing (July 2005) they are unsure how their duties will apply to civil partners or what they need to be telling us now. They are not expecting any instructions until late summer. (Weddings are often booked up six months to a year in advance, and one of those weddings might be using the slot that is really needed by an elderly same-sex couple.) So why trust this article? Don’t. I’ve read the Act, questioned the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and got several responses from them, the Scottish Executive (SE) and from other knowledgeable legal authorities. Experts differ, and it’s a complicated area. So this is the best information that most of us are likely to get hold of. But please ask your MSP and a lawyer. Now. Don’t leave it. Start by contacting your local Registrar now A couple where one is frail or otherwise likely to die, needs to tell the Registrar well in advance. If you turn up at the Registrar’s office at Midnight on Dec 5th (the earliest day you can give notice) because your partner has suddenly taken a turn for the worse the Registrar will not have time to take the necessary steps, and, may not be in the office anyway. But the Registrar General for Scotland can invoke Section 91 of the Act and dispense with the 15 day ‘waiting period’. The registration can take place ‘on the same day’ and ‘within a matter of hours’ just as happens for marriage. So you can get hitched on Dec 5th if you desperately need to. The Registrar will need ‘the certificate of a registered medical practitioner’ to support claims of ill health, so get a doctor’s appointment well in advance. Normally the certificate would be expected to have been issued a couple of days before, but in some parts of the country it can take weeks to get your doctor to call. The doctor may not consider civil partnership to be a medical emergency, and the locum may not be well informed on the finer points of the Civil Partnership Act 2004. (The doctor’s certificate is valid for up to three months when the registrar registers the couple in hospital, and there is no better guideline for invoking the special procedure at the time of writing.) The doctor’s certificate must state that the sick partner understands the nature and purport of civil partnership. The partner who makes the application must show that there is no legal impediment to you forming a civil partnership with each other, and that there is sufficient reason to grant a licence for the partnership to be formed. The application must be in writing. (Quite separately from this, the waiting period may be reduced where there are exceptional circumstances. These need not be related to health at all. This is at the discretion of the Registrar General and there will be Regulations about this.) There are four specific problems that may apply, and you need to ask your local Registrar about them now: 1) If the health of a partner is failing, ask to reserve an early date, preferably 21st Dec (the first possible date to register under normal circumstances). Registrars can not take applications to form a civil partnership until Dec 5th. But they can leave time from Dec 5th to register couples who will have a pressing need, of which failing health is common. Ask the Registrar now to take your personal circumstances into account when taking Dec bookings for (e.g.) marriages. (Same-sex couples have not had legal or civil recognition for their partnerships for 350 years. Heterosexual couples have not had to wait so long!) 2) If one prospective civil partner is in failing health, and has a medical certificate to say that they should not be moved from (e.g.) the hospital, the Registrar may go to the hospital to register the couple. Consider asking whether they have enough staff to attend local hospitals, hospices or other locations to register you personally, bearing in mind that there may be several such couples in their district. 3) If one prospective civil partner is seriously ill the Registrar may shorten the 15 day waiting period (which could bring the earliest registration date from 21st Dec to 5th Dec). But Dec 5th could place a sudden and urgent demand on their resources. The Scottish Executive is confident that it has the staff and experience to cope with this demand, so let them know if you think you may need this provision. 4) In some cases, one partner may be suffering from problems that increasingly impair their ability to communicate. For instance, someone who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease or Parkinson’s disease may think clearly, communicate fairly well on good days but not on bad days - and the bad days increase. The Registrar will claim that he or she has to be satisfied that the partner intends to enter a civil partnership and understands what they are doing. In case the date of your registration is a bad day, write to the Registrar now, and ask that the Registrar keeps your letter as sufficient evidence of your understanding and intent - and request an undertaking that they will do this. If they will not, ask whether the Registrar will accept signed statements from friends who know you that your intent has been consistent. Ask whether a doctor’s letter would be sufficient. Would your oath, sworn in front of a JP or Notary Public, be sufficient? Alternatively ask if you will need to come to the Registrar’s office on a good day in advance, so the Registrar can be confident of your intent. Will the Registrar be able to come to you, in advance? If you or your partner has difficulty communicating, the answers to these questions are critical to you. So get the answers in writing, and send copies of inadequate answers to your MSP to clarify with the SE. For Scotland, section 86 of the Act says that to be eligible to register, a person must be capable of understanding the nature of civil partnership and consenting to it, so being capable of signing or making a mark is not in itself sufficient. A Registrar might refuse registration if they believed that, at the time of intended registration, one person was not capable of understanding and consenting - under the Scots legislation they would not be eligible to register. You will not necessarily get answers to the questions above, but it is important that MSPs are being asked, and passing the questions back to the SE. You might ask that if your Registrar is uncertain of the answers, they refer your questions to the Office of the Registrar General for Scotland. Having other friends to work with you would help, and the local papers and radio might be interested in you as they were interested in prospective civil partners generally at earlier stages of the legislation. If you get some public attention you are more likely to get the attention you need. If you have been a couple for a long time or if you were campaigning for civil partnerships, especially if you have been campaigning for many years, this could add weight to any letter that you write. Different from marriage? No, there are no special deals for gay couples that married couples don’t get. But same-sex couples have been denied the opportunity of a legal union and its financial benefits until now, and for some, it will be too late. Mixed-sex couples have had hundreds of years to get married and they generally don’t need to bother about the special provisions, although they are available to mixed-sex couples. Gay couples need to be told. That’s why these same opportunities are so important to gay couples in 2005. Wills Finally and separately, in Scotland, your will is not ‘revoked’ when you form a civil partnership, but it is wise to put something in your will if you expect to be getting hitched. If your health is failing this is more important. The Succession (Scotland) Act 1964 will apply to civil partnership as it applies to marriage. It may take time for your solicitor to get up to speed, for you to update your wishes, to get an appointment, and to approve or amend the solicitor’s first draft. So this is something to get started on as soon as possible. I’m single - what’s it got to do with me? You need to think, hard, now, about the couples you may have forgotten, the people who are sick or just elderly and infirm. Some have fallen out of gay life. These are the people who are looking after their partners, often worn out, and too busy or too exhausted to think about the taxes that are about to hit them when their partner dies, what will happen to their partner’s pension, and the complexities of writing wills. If you do a little thinking for them now, the survivor could be saved unnecessary hardship or real poverty. Pride in Aberdeen has come and gone and despite the cool temperatures, it attracted a reasonable sized crowd to Duthie Park. Each year the organisation has become more slick and it is becoming an established event in the Aberdeen calendar. It was good to see a mixed crowd there and the entertainment and alcohol flowed freely throughout the day. It has to be a unique event in Scotland as nowhere else has provided a single focus for the LGBT community where everyone can meet and enjoy the atmosphere. A big thanks must go to all those involved in making the day a success and to all those that thought it wasn’t what you wanted I’m sure the demand for volunteers to organise next year’s event will happen very soon. Mark Thomson would like to thank Bar Indigo for providing the buffet at the Phace Grampian awards on Thu 2nd Jun. He would also like to thank everyone who attended and collected their awards. One of the topics discussed at the Conference at the Edge in Aberdeen a couple of months back was the lack of LGBT people taking part in sport. How many of you know an out LGBT sportsperson in your favourite sport? Not many I expect. But how many of you actually take part in sport in Aberdeen as part of a club or organisation? A questionnaire was distributed at Pride asking people what sports they took part in. A meeting at the Phace offices recently discussed the results of these questionnaires with a view to forming a sports club in Aberdeen. A wide range of responses came back covering everything from team and individual sports to mainstream and extreme. We are in the process of compiling a list of all the sports available locally and where they are held. It would also be good to obar dheadhainn have people’s names against these sports that would be willing to act as point of contact for other LGBT people who wish to join in. Half the battle of getting new people to take up a sport is having someone there who can introduce them to the sport and get them started. As a start, it was decided to hold two social events. The first was due to be a be a Midnight swim at Stonehaven Outdoor Pool on Wed 6th Jul. The second is a hill walk at Bennachie on Sun 10th Jul, meeting either at the Phace offices on Waverley Place at 10.15am or at the Bennachie Visitor Centre (Essons Car Park) at 11am. There is no charge for the walk but a contribution towards petrol may be requested if you are getting a lift. Please bring suitable clothing, food and drink with you. Please contact Phace for details. If you take part in sport and would like to help others join in or if you are interested in seeing an LGBT sports club started in Aberdeen please contact the Phace Office on 0845 241 2151 or E-mail markt@phacescotland.org Robert Gordon’s University LGBT Society is looking to recruit new members and committee and have recently updated their website. Over the summer, the society is forming a brand new committee for next year. Everything the current society has will be at your disposal including the support of the Student Association and the rest of the committee. It’s a great opportunity to turn things round and it’ll be great fun as well. In an effort to improve the current service provided and identify the policing needs of the LGBT community a survey has been produced. The purpose of this survey is three fold. First, to establish the community’s perception of Grampian Police in terms of service provision. Secondly, to identify how they can build on their current links with the community and develop those to improve effective twoway communication. Finally, to provide the community with information on the current work Grampian Police is undertaking and the services they provide that are of specific importance to the LGBT community. The survey is available from the Phace Office in Aberdeen and also from Constable Joan Morrison at Grampian Police Community Partnership Department on Aberdeen (01224) 709976 or E-mail: joan.morrison@grampian.pnn.poli ce.uk. If you have ever had to deal with the police for LGBT issues or felt too afraid to contact the police then it is worth filling in a copy of this survey. Included with the survey is an information sheet on the work done by Grampian Police for the LGBT community and I will cover what they already do in next month’s article. And what a nice day with all those police and stewards, “Yes, Sir”! The Midsummer Carnival was in Queens Park the day after (how I suffer for all of you, cruising a park!). Barrd in the park, Botanics this time, are doing Romeo an 8 glaschu scene Juliet (let’s hope this warm spell lasts) so a wee picnic, or pic’n’mix if that’s your bag, with a big box of hankies - tears and snotters a’m tellin’ ye! Butterfly is a new bar in the west of the city (3a Park Terrace, overlooking Kelvingrove Park, near the Youth Hostel) open from the 5th of Jul, it will serve food and have karaoke. The bar is semi-subterranean, in a beautiful setting, opening hours are 8am till 11pm, so coffee and ‘Baileys cheese cake!’ To the pubs! Sad news first: Sun night in the Merchant Pride will never be the same after the departure of my beloved Angelo. Yes, he did a ‘Russel’, Oz will never be the same! Hope you enjoyed your trip pet and I, for one, am glad you’re back. Burly is still going strong. The ‘tattoo night’ was a great success and all power too the ‘portal technicians’ (door staff) who were a joy at the Arches, the more topless men with body illustrations the better, I say! Next time it’s leather, ‘bicker babies’ and ‘scooter scallies’, I wonder if my cycling shorts count! (Do so have a mountain bike!). So, if you like a bit of, uniform, real men and guys that appreciate them then pop along (details on the Venues page). The Waterloo (our oldest and most used of watering holes!) is open again, or is it closing, or going (sorry for the bad language kiddies) STRAIGHT!! As soon as I get a straight answer, I will pass it on. The Revolver Bar has had a ‘face lift’! Well, some scatter pillows and some purple drapes! DJs Michelle and Neil, are doing turn about on Sat nights, techno and soul. We still have the ‘net trani thingi’, that I still can’t work, so I have to ask that nice bar person to change it for me (I’m sure they’re all used to this as an excuse to ‘chat them up’ by now!) Mamas & Papas please! On a different note! Has anyone ever popped into the 13th Note in King Street? Veggie food, ‘saggers’, ‘gig girls’ and ‘band boys’! I knew that all the hot talent was hiding somewhere but who knew! Bands with names like ‘Lucerna’, ‘Dead Fly Buchowski’, ‘Stigma’ and ‘Injuns’. ‘STIGMA’ may not be everyone’s ‘cup of green tea’ but they are GORGEOUS, as are many who eat, drink and play there. Close enough to the Tron, as well as the Merchant Pride, it offers a different type of scene (couples and those looking to be in a relationship that lasts longer than the song that the DJ has just played for the umpteenth time!). Yes, I bit the bullet that is the new improved Bennetts! Girls on Top and all the old ‘favourites’ are back with a vengeance! Its still a little ‘thin on the ground’ most nights, but who said the ‘tribe’ were the sharpest tools in the box! Once word gets round it’s bound to fill up again. Pink is still running and you can still get tickets from the LGBT Centre Café. Cube is still pulling in its ‘younger’ crowd on Mon and Tue, don’t they have school or uni or jobs too get up for! Last, but not least, the AGM took place for the LGBT Centre, or did it? Postponed due to something or other. Anyway, the new board is as follows; George Butler, Eric Kay, Brenda O’Neil, Paul Barton, Gordon Pike and Brenda Colvin. Something was said of the Centre’s future and I will have more information, about that, after the next members’ meeting. Well, that’s all I have heard, seen, been told and had screamed at me, for this month anyway! Until our next merry meeting, this witch must fly! Criz E-mail: criz@drink.demon.co.uk 10 ing various musicals and performances on the screen all skillfully brought together throughout the night by DJ Ross. Look out for up coming events as the guys develop this idea! Ross has also been back at the Dundee University Students Union with “Does your mother know” in June. I’m not sure if it was a one off night, so keep your eyes peeled for the possibility of future nights. Apologies for anybody who went out looking for the ShowBar based on last month's article. Turns out the bar isn’t actually open again as I thought, but the night involving the showing of various musicals has been resurrected and takes place in Brooklyn’s Bar. Also happening in the bar is the usual mix of good offers, karaoke and the quiz night with some great prizes. Out also has a good mix of nights and offers on, look out for details in the bar and club. I’m keeping an eye on how things develop in Aberdeen as they look to set up an LGBT sports club (full details in the gorgeous Duncan’s Aberdeen article), and keep an open mind about how it might work out if brought to Dundee. Time for a quick tour once again of the LGBT scene in Dundee. Diversitay are expanding upon their monthly ice-breaker night by also holding a quiz! They will still be meeting on the third Wed of the month - next one being the 20th Jul - at Braes on Perth Road. Now however they have the use of the downstairs function room (down the stairs just to the right of the entrance), to create a completely safe, discreet area for those coming out for the first time, looking to meet friends or just out for some fun. First prize is £50 cash. This is also a great chance to meet the Diversitay team, discuss what you would like to see for the future of the Dundee scene or indeed to volunteer and contribute to the good work carried out by this organisation. The switchboard is now back to operating weekly, Monday nights 7-10pm on Dundee (01382) 202620. Over the next month, Charlie’s Bar will be a Charlie and Ian less zone as holiday season for the pair approaches. Joyce will once again be taking the helm, with the help of the usual suspects Gary and James! The next quiz night was due for Tue the 5th July, a £100 first prize and various other prizes and novelties up for grabs. There will also be the disco on Fri and Sat nights, 8pm to Midnight. This now includes a combination of music and video cover- dùn eideann edinburgh scene We were graced with fantastic weather on the day of the Pride Scotia March which was led by Edinburgh's Lord Provost, Lesley Hinds. In comparison with the march two years previously not only was the weather fantastic but the crowd was almost trippled. Everone had a fantastic time and full support was given by the local police. The march finished in Albany Street and participants descended on the Blue Moon or Sala for a nibble and drink. A big massive thank you to the staff for coping with such a large number of hungry people. For those brave enough to start drinking mid afternoon, floods of folk headed up to the Street, Habana and Planet Out. All three bars had various drinks promos on throughout the day and were filled to capacity - so much so that people could hardly reach the bars which resulted in the newsagent on London Road running special promos on carry out drinks! And the streets were full with folk sitting around having an impromptu picnic. All good fun, but not to the taste of the Glasshouse Hotel who won't have made any friends in the gay community for their attitude in trying to reclaim the street in front of their overpriced establishment. A big pat on the back to Habana regular Kitty who put on a fantastic Beach Party at the Hallion. The Health and Community Fair in eGo proved to be very popular with boys and girls of all ages. There were lots of stalls and amongst local organisations, only Gay Men's Health was really notable for its absence! Speaking of local organisations, the LGBT Centre for Health e and Wellbeing will be running an LGBT Active programme over the next few months with various activities including An Introduction to Reiki, Drumming and various Art Workshops. For more information: http://www.lgbthealth.org.uk/ Anyway, enough about all that. How about all you tourists over for the summer? And, before I go any further, the LGBT businesses in Edinburgh are NOT looking for any more staff. Fancy a nibble or a bite to eat while you sit outside people watching? Why not try a snack from The Street where the kitchen is run by http://www.thedevilskitchen.co.uk / (By the way, a happy 40th birthday to Lou). Another place which may prove interesting in the comestibles department is the Holyrood Tavern which has re-opened under its old landlord Mark. Food will apparently be entirely vegetarian! The real ale there opens up an interesting little alternative circuit for beer drinkers as a welcome stop between the Regent and the Auld Hoose. Also in the changing hands department has been The Commplex where the new owners' desire to spruce up has caused the cancellation of dates for Velvet and Burly. I hear that the place will re-open in time for Burly's next gig on Sat 23rd Jul but, by then, it will have changed its name to the Mariners Club. I hear rumours that Planet Out, The Street and Habana will have extended opening hours over the summer - or at very least during the Festival. Planet Out has had a few pots of paint applied to the walls and is looking much fresher for it. They've also started serving teas and coffees for the caffeine addicts amongst you. Miss Cilla Slack is now a resident DJ (well, somebody had to give her a home) on the top deck at CC Blooms. But, at weekends, DJ Blondie is your host with all the best in Dance Music downstairs. Please don't forget that CC's is Edinburgh's own gay night club open 7 days a week! Entry is free and drink prices are as reasonable as anywhere else on the scene. Feeling stressed by this column? Wee Alan E-mail: weealan@drink.demon.co.uk 11 Garry Otton says GAYS CAN NO LONGER WAR WITH RELIGIONISTS “In one of the most illiberal measures attempted even by this prescriptive Government… anyone who challenges the tenets of religious faith could risk criminal prosecution… (Up to seven years imprisonment). Once this measure is law, Ministers will come under pressure to act any time a religious group feels affronted… Rather than creating new legislation to censor what people think, isn’t the answer to abolish the seldom used blasphemy laws and rely on the existing rules banning offences against public order – which protect people whatever their religion? For if free speech means anything, it means freedom to criticise, to challenge and even to mock. If religions are strong they have nothing to fear from open debate”. The Daily Mail. Be they the politicised religionists who dragged Gay News to the courts – (Do not blaspheme)! – or those who pasted homophobic posters on every billboard they could find in Scotland – (Keep the Clause)! Gays have been at war with religionists for years. Can we chide such groups for being generous providers of media rent-a-gobs; accuse them of spluttering quotes backing an iffy moral conservatism on matters sexual, or name those who hijack the media for their own 12 pernicious ends? Will it be easier to challenge those who promote female genital mutilation, physical chastisement, forced marriage or child abuse in the name of religion? I remain sceptical! I don’t like selfcensorship, but hey! Like a gay priest mincing up the aisle in a loose-fitting frock, a few beads and a sensible smoking handbag, we have to conform! And that means, for now, being nice to religionists. (Not that I wasn’t already to those precious few who put their heart before the ballot box). This month The Scottish Daily Mail found a new friend: The Kirk’s new Moderator, the Not Very Knee-jerking Rev David Lacy. Praise Be! The Church of Scotland unfairly estimated by anti-Church propagandists to be extinct within 50 years - has a new mouthpiece. Lacy wants politicians to back policies promoting marriage. OK! So let’s give it a makeover. First off, congratulations to Martin Reijns and Karen Watts who were married in Scotland’s first humanist wedding ceremony. Some people were bound to find change a bit difficult. Take The Sunday Times Scotland, which exposed the level of dignity they wanted to attach to the ceremony with a condescending: “Zoo hosts UK’s first humanist marriage”. Gays too will be marrying by the end of year. (Not in the UK. Civil Partnership is NOT Marriage. Ed.) Where is the Church now to stop us doing to marriage what TV style gurus, Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister have done to the spread of laminated mahogany-effect, flatpack wardrobes? Come on Kearney and O’Brien, we can’t hear you in Motherwell! Get out of The Herald and into The Scottish AdTrader! The Church of Scotland’s Rev Lacy swooned with admiration of the Caths, praising them in The Sunday Herald for having been “more coherent” than his Church in their moral positions. (I know, weren’t they just fab the way the handled the repeal of Clause 28)? The Kirk’s Lacy agrees “absolutely” with those who say the Executive mustn’t grant same-sex couples equal rights in adoption law. Praise the Lord! He said he was convinced only a man and a woman could bring up children. The Very Lovely Lacy added: “It is a traditional Christian doctrine and I hold to it. I don’t know if God has blessed any other way”. Calling on all the old stereotypes, he added that the idea of a “loving, faithful and not promiscuous” gay couple adopting children was “one point of view” he understood, but did not accept. “The other point of view is that it takes a male and female in the same loving relationship, that the child needs both to be properly grown”. And this is based on…. What? Old Moore’s Almanac? Doctor Culpepper? Something Elvis said? Lacy didn’t say. It wasn’t in the Bible, but then, it wouldn’t be… These days such ‘truths’ are found spilling out of Christian bookshops. Bless them! And Praise be! I repeat… Lacy said he looked forward to giving his opinion on controversial issues, so we can look out for him in our Scottish newspapers and other media that thankfully support me in thinking that it’s vitally important to trumpet the opinion of a religionist whenever they report on issues that affect gays. One of the most right-wing Moderators in years, Lacy thinks openly gay ministers would “rip” the Church apart. Indeed we would and must resist the temptation to try on their frocks. Our place is on our knees, in the pews, begging for forgiveness and a good thrashing when we deserve it. I’m pleased the Kirk has at last found someone to turn back the clock to an age when Britain was proud to colour the world pink and we sorted out our problems over a nice cup tea. “Shame on the Rev Lacy, and shame on the Kirk for electing this latter-day witchhunter to his present office”, cried a very naïve Roz Paterson through Your Voice in The Scottish Socialist Voice. Get a grip, girl! There has never been a law that has ever stopped kids having a gay mum or dad because no one had ever thought of anything to stop a gay person being a mum or dad, or a mum or dad being gay. That was before the Church and media found it all “gravely immoral”. In Scotland, the law is being tweaked to allow not just gays, but unmarried couples to adopt instead of the messy business of just one adopting and the other seeking a residence order. The Caths and Kirks are both using the media to guide us to the decision that children are best brought up within marriage. Heterosexual marriage. Former Scottish Daily Mail reporter, Hamish MacDonell gasped in The Scotsman: “Shake-up may open door for gay couples to adopt”. He reported it as a “radical overhaul of Scotland’s adoption laws” which was “expected to pave the way for gay couples to adopt”. Ian Smith also echoed down the cavern of The Scottish Daily Mail with a “radical shake-up” that was going to spark a “moral backlash across Scotland”. Few reports went without warning how such moves would spark protests from the Church and Mr MacDonell’s report was no exception. “Such a move is expected to trigger a furious reaction from some church groups, who claim children have the right to be brought up within a stable married life”. Cardinal Keith O’Brien, commander of the Scottish Catholics told the eagerly awaiting press and The Scottish Daily Mail that these Executive proposals were “contrary to the common good”. Good man. Praise be! He added: “Support for such proposals would distort the understanding of the family, cause harm to children and promote the status of homosexual relationships. The small number of homosexual couples living together and the instability of homosexual relationships make the arguments about increasing the number of potential adoptive parents unrealistic”. In a revealing insight on how Catholics might treat young gays in their schools, he added: “Where homosexual adoption has been allowed, news coverage has revealed that potential parents who refuse to support homosexual relationships are being classed as unsuitable to adopt”. O’Brien has also claimed that gays adopting children was in open contradiction to a principle, recognised in the UN Convention on the rights of the child, (although the rights of people of a middle sex are clearly not recognised in Catholic schools – which is right, of course, isn’t it)? Sorry, I don’t want to offend, but in fairness to Deputy Education Minister Euan Robson, who is responsible for the issue, he had already declared that the emphasis would remain on heterosexual families, which supports the idea that gay families are somehow second-rate. The group recommending an update of Scotland’s adoption laws have insisted that unmarried couples would have to prove an enduring family relationship with a rigorous examination of their relationship to ensure it provided stability for the child and to explore in depth their parenting abilities. Efforts would be made to ensure that all decisions were to be made in the best interests of the child. Such ‘permanence orders’ were to be a cornerstone of the proposal to allow gay couples to adopt. Heterosexual married couples like Fred and Rosemary West or Victoria Climbie’s mother, Marie Kouao and her boyfriend Carl Manning would, of course, be exempt from such scrutiny by way of their sexual status. The Scottish Daily Mail featured a shocking quote from Glasgow West End style queen, Justin Ryan who confessed: “I’d love to give a home to a disadvantaged kid who’s had a bad start in life”. Catholic top dog, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, who was in a far better position to judge what would be best for the kiddies, was able to see through Mr Ryan’s shallow reasoning and told Scotland on Sunday: “Sadly, demands for parental rights for homosexual partners are more to do with fulfilling their wish for status rather than meeting needs of children”. The Church dashed into the nearest second-hand Christian bookstore to open the 1978 study, ‘Homo-sexualities: A Study of Diversity Among Men and Women’. The study, nowhere near as old as the Church and already out of date was not as helpful as the Church’s long-term plan to denigrate gay relationships. The message was clear: Straights are good people who live as committed married couples and gays are intrinsically evil and hopelessly promiscuous. The Scottish Daily Mail opened a hole at the bottom of the page for Norman Wells, director of Family and Youth Concern who pointed out that “research evidence overwhelmingly confirms that the two-parent family consisting of a father and mother who are committed to each other for life provides children with the best start in life”. I’m not going to go to the trouble of questioning his theory because he found it in a good Christian bookshop, but might I suggest we wait until gays are able to marry and officially adopt before the Family and Youth Concern releases any more ‘truths’? Wells added: “We need to stop treating our most vulnerable children as guinea-pigs and abandon what is, at the end of the day, a ideology rather than a policy with a proven track record for which there is firm empirical evidence”. With opinions that soothe people with roses up their arbours and kid-locks on their garden gates, Wells insisted: “Fathers and mothers complement each other and, together, they are able to offer a richness of care that will not be found in any other setting. It is grossly irresponsible to deprive needy children of what is best for them”. Without a gay to turn to, Scotland on Sunday was forced to turn to columnist Fiona Leith to lend us some support, but it wasn’t all plain sailing. On celebrity interior designers, Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan’s confessed hopes on raising kids, she added bleakly: “…Frankly, having seen what they do to people’s homes – hammering some golden lamé lettering over a double bed to spell out ‘utopia’ – I dread to think what aesthetic taste some poor wee pup of theirs would end up with”. I’m pleased The Herald always ensures religionists have a voice in Scotland. They need to be heard. The Herald rattles out stories from religionist sources on an almost daily basis. In a recent edition of one paper I counted four reports about religion. The first, by Raymond Duncan, was an interesting piece about some breakaway branch of the Wee Frees who claimed the media was promoting blasphemy. Two further stories were supported by comments from religion-friendly spokespeople; there was also a bishop’s obituary, an opinion piece, a reader’s letter and a picture of two anoraks standing outside the Church of Scotland assembly. They had reason to be sour-faced, standing in the cold, wrapped in something that looked like it was pulled out of a jumble sale with their eyes closed. One was in a black, nylon quilted jacket that looked like it had been filled with floor insulation, while his partner shivered in an interesting square-patterned, grey woollen cardi and matching nylon tie. They were ScotsGay media monitor holding banners addressed to the Kirk’s new right-wing Moderator: “Lacy – should gays minister in C of S? Bible says no”. Something else I couldn’t find in the Bible. But I did find something nicer for religionists to wear when they protest outside churches in the new Grattan’s catalogue. And what about something from Clone Zone to compliment those homophobic banners, as there’s nothing like waving things like that in the air to tell everybody you’re really gay! A fortnight later and readers were bowled over by another amazing report in The Herald from Cameron Simpson on a new theory that suggested Jesus might’ve died the same way as people in Shettleston: Deep Vein Thrombosis! Now isn’t that amazing? In the face of the Scottish media’s uncomfortable relationship with sexual morality, Nick Mayhew has released ‘Bare Britain’, a guidebook on the best places to strip off. A full page in The Daily Mail was a magnificent coup for the publishers of Mayhew’s book who were braver than Clintons; the greetings cards firm who recently baulked at releasing a set of gay greeting cards in Scotland. In The Sunday Times Scotland, “a fully clothed Adrian Turpin” was forced to “investigate” why Scottish beaches got such “rave reviews”. Unfortunately, he was not so interested in how a polluted, litter-strewn beach like Stevenston, nestling in front of a former ammunitions factory, spoke volumes on Scottish attitudes to nudity and focused instead on the crabbit opinion of Scottish Daily Mail columnist, John MacLeod. A sexually repressed son of a minister of the ‘Free Church’, MacLeod’s comments were comical if not sad. Asked what the reaction of a typical minister would be to a nudist invasion of the west coast, he scoffed: “Horror, pity and disgust I should imagine… It is difficult to think of a nudist invasion without an awful lot of hilarity. The horizontal rain. The icy chill of the Atlantic. Bumpy, wobbly flesh. Unspeakable…” He launched himself into a tirade of Biblical references, hinting at the wonderful imaginative and colour- ful nature of such a large section of the people on Harris: “After the Fall of Man, one of the very first things in the new order was clothing. First fig leaves, then animal skins”. Clutching a large beach towel round him he verbally struggled to remove his smalls: “The fact is we are meant to be clothed… The English language suggests that. ‘Stripped’, ‘naked’, ‘nude’ are all synonyms for diminished. The whole point of clothing is that it’s a social discipline. To put it crudely, it’s there to cover signs of sexual arousal. Men and women, boys and girls, naked together is an affront on many levels. The naturist thing is an assault on decency. There is something very aggressive about it”. Not at all, on the contrary, there is something very Scottish about being in the scud. Far from satisfying Mr MacLeod’s preferences for swimming cossies, as Mayhew pointed out, like so many of his contemporaries, Rob Roy MacGregor preferred to sunbathe on the banks of Loch Voil in the altogether. And, oh dear! Has Mr MacLeod so quickly forgotten that homoerotic piece he once wrote for The Herald about the youth that flicked a few of his switches whilst cutting the grass? E-mail: garry@scottishmediamonitor.com Read the papers, post your comments or search for material at the SCOTTISH MEDIA MONITOR website: http://www.scottishmediamonitor.com CUT IT OUT… Bitching Tory, Gerald Warner in Scotland on Sunday: “The post-devolution Scottish Tory party has chosen to miss every bus – literally, when it allowed Brian Souter to hijack the Keep the Clause campaign…” Columnist Gerald Warner in Scotland on Sunday: “Aids has its origins in acts of personal irresponsibility”. 13 edinburgh PR ID ES C It was a lovely summer day. The sun shone and the birds sang in the trees. O TI A After the Happy Walk, folk got rat-arsed in the pubs and streets around Edinburgh's Gay Village and/or wandered round the Health and Community Fair in eGo before heading off in the evening to Ocean Pride down in Leith. And a very few even made their way to Reggie Dwight's over-rated gig at Easter Road. The vote in the Congress of Deputies was 187 to 147 with four abstentions. The Senate had rejected the bill, but it is the Congress that has final say. Gay couples were allowed to begin the process of getting married on 3rd Jul, when the law change was published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado. Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated at Madrid’s gay-pride parade on 2nd Jul. “Today, Spanish society is responding to a group of people who for years have been humiliated, whose rights have been ignored, their dignity offended, their identity denied and their freedom restricted”, said Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero ... “Today Spanish society grants them the respect they deserve, recognises their rights, restores their dignity, affirms their identity and restores their liberty. “We are not the first [country to do this] but I am sure we will not be the last”, he said. “After us will come many other countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality. “[This is] a small change in wording that means an immense change in the lives of thousands of citizens. We are not legislating, ladies and gentlemen, for people who are far away and unknown to us. We are expanding opportunities for the happiness of our neighbours, our work colleagues, our friends, our relatives. “It is true that [gays] are only a minority but their triumph is a triumph for everybody. ... Their victory makes us all better, makes our society better.” Gay campaigners were elated. “Finally, gays and lesbians are no longer second-class citizens”, said the Spanish COLEGAS Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals. “We pridefully see ourselves as citizens of this great nation that is Spain where liberty and equality have triumphed at last. “Gays and lesbians are now going to take a well-deserved rest after these past several months of suffering being viewed as strange animals — and having ourselves and our families observed under a magnifying glass”, the group said. The European Region of the International Lesbian and Gay Association called the law’s passage a blow to the Roman Catholic Church. “Spain proved that it is a modern and outward-looking society and there is no reason or justification for discriminating against LGBT people”, said 17 Executive Director Patricia Prendiville. “It has also proved that even strong Roman Catholic roots and heritage is not a barrier for building an inclusive and equal society. We believe the Spanish marriage victory will have a significant positive impact in other European countries where religious arguments are used to oppose the legal recognition for same-sex partners.” Canadian lawmakers OK same-sex marriage Following rowdy debate, Canada’s House of Commons voted 158 to 133 on 28th Jun to legalise full same-sex marriage nationwide. Courts already had forced legalisation of same-sex marriage in nine of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories — everywhere but Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Prince Edward Island. The measure now moves to the Senate, where it faces quick and easy passage. “[This] is about the Charter of Rights”, said Prime Minister Paul Martin. “In a nation of minorities, it is important that you don’t cherry-pick rights. A right is a right.” “It’s about the right to love,” gay Bloc Québécois MP Réal Ménard told The New York Times. “When you are in love, things are different, and everyone is entitled to that.” Czech parliament gives preliminary approval to partner bill The Czech Republic’s Chamber of Deputies has passed a same-sex registered-partnership bill on first reading and sent it to a committee, the Prague Daily Monitor reported. The measure grants limited rights in areas such as health information and support payments. Civil unions would be registered and dissolved at the birth registry. Ruling extends German partner benefits Berlin’s Administrative Court has ruled that people united under Germany’s same-sex partnership law are entitled to each other’s pension when one of them dies. Pride around the planet About 500 people marched in the first large-scale gay-pride parade in Athens, Greece. “The only way to safeguard our rights is for everyone to understand that homosexuality is a reality and that people should not behave as if we don’t exist”, marcher Maria Gouma told The Scotsman newspaper. About 300,000 people turned out for pride in Paris. The procession snaked from the Montparnasse train station to the Bastille. The parade was so massive that some marchers waited hours to step off from the Left Bank starting point. About 250 people marched in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, “dressed in gaudy, revealing clothes”, said Rediff.com. Police made no effort to halt the parade even though homosexuality is illegal. “We want to tell the world we exist”, said Teesta, a 27year-old student. More than 125,000 people turned out for Toronto’s 25th parade — including Police Chief Bill Blair. According to CTV.ca, “The parade showcased everything from bronzed, scantily-clad dancers gyrating on floats to pounding dance music to the more sedate groups, like Grandparents for Gays and Lesbians.” Mayor David Miller told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: “To me, it sums up so much of what Toronto is about. Everyone’s welcome here, everyone’s respected. We’re very proud we’re the place where same-sex marriage, the first one [in Canada], was performed.” Panama saw its first gay-pride parade June 25. About 70 people marched, with at least an equal number walking along on the sidewalks, out of view of media cameras. Six newspapers, five radio stations, two TV stations and numerous Web sites covered the parade. “For being our first-ever march, that was quite a turnout — definitely beyond what we were expecting”, said Javier Rodríguez of the New Men and Women Association of Panama, which organised the parade. “This, for me, is the first time that I’ve been able to gauge an actual ‘gay community’ in Panama”, Rodríguez said. “All these years, everyone’s been talking about such a community. To me, it had never existed until now. ... This is the first time that the different actors — from the clubs to the boutique to the bathhouse to the bars to the Web sites — have responded to the call of one actor, our group, and joined efforts to make something, anything, happen!” Pride marchers stabbed in Jerusalem An ultra-Orthodox man stabbed three marchers during Jerusalem’s fourth gay-pride parade on 30th Jun, the Jerusalem Post reported. The attack occurred at Ben Yehuda and Hahistradrut streets. A woman was stabbed in the arm; a man was stabbed in the arm, hand and chest; and a third marcher received a minor injury. All three were taken to Bikur Holim Hospital. Two were treated and released. Adam David Russo was moved to Shaare Zedek Medical Center where he is recovering from deep gashes to his arm, the back of his hand and his chest. “They tried to murder me because I’m gay”, Russo told the Haaretz newspaper. “In the ambulance I thought I wouldn’t dare set foot again in Jerusalem. Now I’ve calmed down, but I still think I won’t go downtown alone. On the other hand, now I view my community activism almost as a mission, so I want to stand out.” Yishai Schlissel, 30, was arrested for the attack and police say othersmay have been involved. Separately, police arrested 13 religious Jews who tried to block the march. More than 1,000 people demonstrated against the parade — throwing bottles of urine and bags of faeces at the marchers, the Post said. Mayor Uri Lupolianski had tried to prevent the parade, which drew about 10,000 marchers, but he was thwarted by the Jerusalem District Court. Gay activists blamed Lupolianski’s “incitement” for the violence. Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz agreed, saying, “The heads of the Jerusalem municipality should self-reflect on their contribution to the incitement leading up to today’s violence.” Muslims disrupt transvestite pageant About 10 members of Indonesia’s Islamic Defenders’ Front barged into a Jakarta nightclub during the recent Miss Transvestite pageant. They left after 20 minutes, when pageant organisers agreed to wrap up the contest earlier than planned. “We were all traumatised. They said we were immoral, but God created us this way”, organiser Megi Megawati told the AP. Venezuelans stage kiss-in at Supreme Court Gay activists staged a kiss-in outside Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice in Caracas on 14 Jun, demanding marriage rights for same-sex couples. Dozens of people took part in the protest, chanting, “We’re Venezuelans, too” and “Marriages now, no more fucking around.” “We had to repeat the protest 10 times because every 15 minutes another journalist showed up”, said Santiago Farías from the gay group Affirmative Union. 18 FilmScotsGay FILMS to KNOW ABOUT by Malcolm Epstein Growing up gay in this world is a big enough problem. It is a far bigger one to have the body of a man, but have an intense obsession to be female. "BEAUTIFUL BOXER" is based on the true story of a boy in Thailand who gained fame as a transvestite kickboxer only to save the money for his sex change operation. It opens early in August and will make many of us realise in comparison our lives are hardly a problem at all. Early September brings the best boxing film ever made "CINDERELLAMAN" (tbc) in which Russell Crowe is in a true story of the thirties about the fighter, James L Braddock. In the American depression years millions had a very hard time and Braddock, whose boxing career had not been exceptional, was reduced to begging to feed his wife and three children. Dire necessity makes him return to the ring to face the heavyweight champ of the world, Max Baer, who has already killed two men in the ring. There have been objections in America as the scripts depict Baer as an all time villain when, in fact, he supported the families of the two men who lost their lives to him. The sensitivity Russell Crowe shows in this film is ten times more impressive than the tough roles he has played in the past. For many years there has been enough publicity about such brain damage that happens to professional boxers they can go into comas for months and finally emerge to sit in wheelchairs for the rest of time. That is why I am horrified to hear of fathers who encourage their sons into boxing. I was amazed a few years ago to meet a bricklayer who made sparetime cash in bareknuckle boxing. As it is not legal tickets are not printed and halls are hired for six bouts as, it seems, there are vast numbers who delight in seeing oceans of blood run. Jamie Bell, unforgettable as Billy Elliot, is almost grown up in two new titles. The best of these is "DEAR WENDY" (15) set in an American mining town in which Jamie rejects 19 mine working to be a shop assistant. But coming across a handgun one day he decides to explore an empty mineshaft one night for target practise. He becomes such a good shot he admits to a friend his new hobby. Before long he is taking several shop assistants down at night who develop a new confidence with their newly acquired guns the more they practise. It is three quarters of an imaginative film. But the Danish director Thomas Vinterberg and writer Lars Von Trier change Jamie's commonsense personality to make him persuade his friends into a shootout with authority. Maybe they ran out of ideas. Jamie's other new movie on release now is "UNDERTOW" (15). After his mother dies his father, Dermot Mulroney, goes west to run a farm which is backbreaking as a ten year old fragile brother can do little work. Dermot's problem brother, Josh Lucas, tracks them down after years in prison as he knows their father left Dermot a box of gold coins. A nightmare fight develops in which Dermot is murdered. The boys witness all and flee across country knowing if caught their uncle will murder them too. Both films prove Jamie is an efficient actor whose maturing looks will appeal to many. Late in July "THE SKELETON KEY" (tbc) is set in the swamplands backwoods of New Orleans where Kate Hudson gets a job nursing a dying patient, John Hurt. It rains much of the time bringing the swamp waters closer to the decaying mansion. Slowly Kate begins to accept John's wife, Gena Rowlands, is willing his death with voodoo. The atmosphere is skilfully maintained to make me wonder what the truth could be. "DARK WATER" (15) is a horror movie less skilfully contrived in which Jennifer Connolly is estranged from her husband, Dougray Scott, and battling over the custody of their young daughter. She takes her to live in a rundown block of flats where water leaks from above and ominous sounds haunt them. The daughter keeps talking to an imaginary friend and the script implies Jennifer's husband is paying to have her tormented. The main disappointment is that Dougray Scott is one British actor with the charisma to be a world star and is wasted in a secondary role here. I don't know if he is not ambitious enough or lucky enough to get the right parts in the right pictures. It helps to be obsessed with the female form to appreciate the French "SECRET THINGS". A brilliant nude dancer in a Paris nightclub forms a bond with the barmaid there and, incongruously, they get jobs as secretaries for the same company manouvering and manipulating the men there to claw their way to the top. Shot with style and taste it could keep you intrigued. "LOS DEBUTANTES" (18) is much more humble fare from Chile in which girls strip in a nightclub massaging cream over their bodies. A gangster atmosphere is combined with luxury houses and limousines which almost makes up for a trip to Chile. The comedy "WEDDING CRASHERS" (15) shows how confirmed bachelors Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan have devised the perfect way to meet girls until the unplanned happens and they get emotionally involved. Shot with a big budget and amusing script it will please many. CURRENT RELEASES Any Steven Spielberg film is worth scrutiny and "WAR OF THE WORLDS" (12a) has Tom Cruise and the most expensive special effects ever put onscreen. He plays an inadequate father who only sees his ten year old daughter and 17 year old son on rare weekends when they stay with him and they happen to be there when a crisis hits this planet. How he tries to protect them is worth your money. It will be one of the hits of the year. "A LOT LIKE LOVE" (12a) tells how Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet meet on a flight, instantly fancy each other, and grab hold. Location keeps them apart, but they get together every few years to calm animal desires. My favourite scene is at a Hollywood party as Ashton knows his teenage sister is fixated with Eminem and, to infuriate her, phones to say "I just met him here and he has been running his hand over my legs." "13 CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING" (15) is an economical curiousity with intermixed storylines showing how people regret their actions and make amends. Principally of interest for Matthew McConaughey showing if the part interests him he doesn't just make big budget movies. "INSIDE DEEP THROAT" (18) shows how a $25,000 sex movie became a $600 million phenomenom. Made over 30 years ago "Deep Throat" changed the American censorship laws and originated a vast sex industry. DVD WORLD In the sixties Andy Warhol picked up a spectacular young man in New York City, Joe Dallesandro, who was on the game and became so obsessed he told him he would make him a movie star. Although Andy was wealthy he chose to employ an amateur to write and direct films for him. "Flesh", "Trash" and "Heat" from 1968 to 1972 gave the impression the dialogue was thought up on the set. However, Joe's charisma is strong throughout. He is playing a hustler (which we call escorts here), a drug addict and simply a guy on the make with women and men. The advantage of this Tartan collectors box set is they are fully uncut for the first time and the Dallesandro body is very pleasing to study although the frontal nudes don't have the expertise our Mike Arlen would have brought to them. "THE PAUL MORRISSEY COLLECTION" is worth seeing for Joe's incredible sex appeal. Parasol Peccadillo have chosen to import "SUGAR" from Canada about the sexual awakening of an 18 year old guy. Speeding on his skateboard he happens to notice the best looking guy in Toronto who is happy to bring him out of his shell. You will either be impressed or irritated by the amateur edge of this type of film. But you are likely to fancy either of the two guys. One of the most amazing films I never saw on release is "DOT THE I" that has the most plot twists in the history of cinema. There is a dinner party of girls at a Paris restaurant and the manager announces to everyone this is a hen party and as one of them will soon be married it is a French tradition she can choose to kiss any man of her choice there tonight. The man she chooses and the kiss are so memorable it changes her life. This DVD is so recommendable I will never forget the name of the new writer/director Matthew Parkhill. A TV series earlier this year "The Lost World Of Mitchell And Kenyon" featured black and white movies shot between 1900 and 1913 that had been lovingly restored by the British Film Institute after being found in a Blackburn basement in a barrel. Its popularity made them issue it in DVD. Vast numbers of people were so fascinated in our ancestors they have now issued "ELECTRIC EDWARDIANS". As there were no cinemas in those days films of local people were shown in town halls on the evening they were shot. The latest one has a Birmingham university procession on degree day in 1901. I have replayed it many times and freezeframed it when faces appeared whom I would love to have met on a time trip. It proves that at any age there were incredible men, and women who had taken their degrees in this procession, whom we would have been grateful to meet. The BFI have also issued a unique 1929 German movie "PEOPLE ON SUNDAY", a silent about unknowns in Berlin which is an engrossing view of life 75 years ago. It is made by names who later found fame in Hollywood like Billy Wilder and Fred Zimmerman. I was enthralled watching Berliners before Hitler came to power. Call Scotland’s own chat & date service.
