2011 ANNUAL REPORT Planning for the Future in an Ever Changing World MISSION STATEMENT “Empowering people with disabilities to explore and experience endless possibilities” ORGANIZATIONAL PHILOSOPHY •POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT - individual growth, challenging, rewarding •PERSONAL WORTH - value each individual •SHARED COMMITMENT - trust, sense of belonging, mutual support •COMMUNICATION - mutual sharing of meaningful information •LEADERSHIP - provision of vision, guidance and direction •ACCOUNTABILITY - keep commitments, joint solutions THANKS FOR BELIEVING IN VIP! Dear Friends, VIP Services, Inc. is indebted to the many friends, supporters, family members, business partners and staff members whose efforts have allowed this organization to survive and thrive since our inception in 1970. Our existence has been a clear example of the great contribution that a caring community can achieve in expanding the horizons of people with disabilities. Recognizing that we have come a very long way from those first eight clients in the basement of an old factory, we know that we still have much to do and that the challenges will continue to be great. As an organization we remain committed to our mission of empowering people with disabilities to explore and experience endless possibilities. We believe that everyone who desires the opportunity to work in the community should be able to achieve that dream and we are committed to providing the supports and services that will assist in that effort. We also believe that people need to be afforded a wide array of options wherever they may fall on the ability continuum. The meaningful employment undertaken in the VIP Services Kikkoman Employment & Training Center provides a very real sense of purpose and value to those who work there. Our Day Programs help individuals facing multiple and significant challenges with defining what constitutes quality of living in their individual circumstances and making it become a reality. With your ongoing involvement and support, we look forward to continuing to push the envelope of accomplishment with and for all of the very important people we serve. Best regards, Edward C. Scaro President Cynthia D. Simonsen Executive Director The 2011 Annual Meeting, held on December 13, 2011, afforded an opportunity to welcome new Board members Don Buchert, Mark Stinebrink, Cherie Ackman and Kathy Garske and pay tribute to departing members Donna Neshek and Terri Jambor. Pictured from left are Executive Director Cindy Simonsen, Donna Neshek, Beth Shodeen, Ed Scaro, Don Buchert, Bill Nelson, Mark Stinebrink, Dr. Carol Prchal, Bob Putnam, Cherie Ackman, John English, Kathy Garske, Terri Jambor and John Nanna. Members not pictured include Deb Alder, Cheri Brost, Bob Fettig, Melita Grunow and Don Vandello. 2 2011: A STR With the economy dictating talk of budget cutting and seeds of programmatic changes already in the air, the several months beginning in 2010 to develop a new three year strategic plan. The 2011-2013 Strategi the strategies that were designed to meet these goals in this annual report. GOAL #1: “PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT CHOICES FOR EVERY PERSON WHO WANTS TO WORK” In an effort to expand vocational learning tools, VIP Services initiated its new Career Central program in 2011. Career Central is designed to assist job seekers in understanding how to use all available resources in searching for jobs, learning how to prepare both paper and on-line applications, training for how to present yourself in an interview and understanding the expectations that come along with actually getting a job. In keeping with the VIP Services philosophy, new challenges were introduced to workers at the Kikkoman Employment & Training Center, including the addition of interesting new projects such as the one shown here involving the assembly of watering system components for Edstrom Industries, Inc. 3 Throughout 2011 VIP Services clients continued to work successfully in a wide variety of community employment settings. Paul Perry, pictured here, was honored as an Individual Achievement Honoree for his work at Integra. In another exciting new development, long time participants in the production shop began participating in exploration visits to see firsthand what is involved in working in the community. These excursions have proven to be very helpful in enabling clients to envision different kinds of occupational futures for themselves. RATEGIC YEAR ere was never a more appropriate time for strategic thinking and the Board and staff of VIP Services worked hard for c Plan was adopted at the April 2011 Board meeting and we are pleased to share our key outcome goals and some of GOAL #2: “ESTABLISH NEW PROGRAMS TO MEET EMERGING NEEDS OF CURRENT & NEW CLIENTS” A variety of new marketing materials were developed to help potential clients better understand the range of program options available to them. With the implementation of Family Care, VIP’s transportation services have significantly expanded in the number of daily transports that the agency provides to non-client Family Care referrals. The importance of maximizing the use of VIP Services vehicles to meet community needs and raise agency revenues is a natural fit. Daily Living Skills offers training that plays an important role in the lives of many clients. An individualized program plan is designed to fit the specific needs of each client. One of the most important aspects of the program involves helping clients learn to use existing resources in the community including learning to use new kinds of technology to assist clients in their communications with the community or using existing resources to help monitor health. Staff member Dana Kelnhofer and VIP Services Ambassadors brought back important information to share with others from the 2011 Self Determination Conference put on by the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities in November. Ambassadors have taken on an instrumental lead role in helping other clients to work toward self determination. 4 2011: A STRATEGIC In an era of economic challenge, the VIP Services Board of Directors recognized the importance of both diversifying and increasing non-public funding. The clients and families served by VIP Services programs continued to benefit from this diversified approach and we are pleased to recognize the many generous groups, organizations, businesses and individuals who came together to ensure the agency’s economic viability in this 2011 Annual Report. GOAL #3: “DIVERSIFY AND INCREASE NON-PUBLIC FUNDING” Platinum and Community Champions included generous companies like Brunk Industries, Inc., generous individuals like William C. Wiswell and Bob & Maryellen Fettig and groups like the Kikkoman Foods Foundation, Inc. Additional support from entities like the Shodeen Family Foundation as well as the Alliant Energy Foundation and the Elkhorn Fund of the Southern Wisconsin Community Foundation combined to make a truly significant impact in 2011. Community partnerships with organizations like the United Way of Walworth County, several generous local chapters of the Knights of Columbus, the Walworth County Tavern League, the Pleasant Lakers Snowmobile Club, the Walworth/Fontana Rotary Club, St. Benedict Church and the Elkhorn Lions Club provided important support for a broad spectrum of agency programs. The Elkhorn Kiwanis Club sponsored the formation of the VIP Aktion Club and, in addition to their support and partnership with Aktion Club members, also sponsored the year’s most colorful event, the annual Halloween Dance. The Geneva National Foundation continued to play a major role in the life of VIP Services in 2011 by hosting the Lifelong Empowerment Golf Outing (LEO) and Push, Walk Ride (PWR) events in June. Funds generated by the LEO were instrumental in the success of the VIP Capital Campaign as well as in supporting important operating initiatives. The PWR added an important and fun element that allowed the participating agencies to generate additional funds for themselves. 5 VIP Services clients and community members set a record in funds raised for the 2011 VIP Bowl-a-thon. This mid-winter event has become a favorite way to help VIP Services while having a great time. The Ultimate Indoor Tailgate Party has also become a much anticipated fall event, thanks to the participation of loyal sponsors and dedicated football fans. C YEAR - CONTINUED 2011 was a watershed year for the VIP Services volunteer program. With continued growth in the number of volunteers, new activities and experience became possible for clients. Over 2,641 hours of volunteer service in 2011 set a new record for the agency and allowed us to continue to host enrichment activities like computer labs, after work Discovery classes, special outings and activities, and fundraising events. In addition, many new volunteers were willing to participate on a regular weekly basis to help individual clients in Day Programs. GOAL #4: “ENLIST VOLUNTEER EXPERTISE TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE PROGRAMMING” Volunteers have made a significant difference at VIP Services and with the addition of a new part-time Volunteer Coordinator in 2011 to provide additional support, the program is expected to continue to add many new and exciting dimensions in the future. VIP Services was privileged to have had the volunteer services of Jack Scherer in 2011. Scherer, who has now gone on to attend the University of Wisconsin Medical School, left behind a program of fitness activities that provide daily benefits for an increasing number of clients. Ambassador coaches were the vanguard of the new VIP volunteer program and continue to challenge and support the growth and development of the clients with whom they work. Coach Donna Neshek has forged a powerful alliance with ambassador Amanda Giacomelli. VIP Aktion Club members received invaluable support from Elkhorn Kiwanians at the 2011 Pancake Breakfast. Aktion Club members used the funds raised by the Breakfast to make their own grants to a number of children’s programs in the area. The Aktion Club also partnered with the Elkhorn Kiwanis Club on Peanut Day to raise funds for Agape House. 6 2011 FINANCIAL HIGHLIG BALANCE SHEET ASSETS Current Assets: Cash & Cash Equivalents Building Fund Reserve Pledges Receivable Accounts Receivable Inventories Prepaid Expenses Total Current Assets Property, Plant & Equipment Net TOTAL ASSETS 2011 2010 $ 540,159 74,183 46,840 526,138 228,325 25,878 $ 1,441,523 $ 291,862 27,133 76,280 576,278 224,638 24,618 $ 1,220,809 $ 4,183,100 $ 4,274,074 $ 5,624,623 $ 5,494,883 $ $ LIABILITIES Current Liabilities: Accounts Payable Accrued Expenses Total Current Liabilities Total Long Term Liabilities TOTAL LIABILITIES NET ASSETS Restricted Funds Building Fund Reserve Unrestricted Funds TOTAL NET ASSETS TOTAL LIABILITIES & NET ASSETS $ 44,796 311,035 355,831 $ 22,330 296,378 318,708 $ 0 $ 0 $ 355,831 $ 318,708 $ 352,567 121,023 4,795,202 $ 294,658 103,413 4,778,104 $ 5,268,792 $ 5,176,175 $ 5,624,623 $ 5,494,883 STATEMENT OF REVENUES AND EXPENSES REVENUES Program Service Fees Sales & Other Program Fees General Contributions Total Operating Revenue EXPENSES Wages & Benefits General Operating Program Supplies & COGS Occupancy Vehicles & Equipment Total Operating Expenses EXCESS OF OPERATING REVENUES OVER OPERATING EXPENSES BUILDING FUND Contributions TOTAL EXCESS OPERATING FUNDS & BUILDING FUND CONTRIBUTIONS 7 2011 2010 $ 2,316,928 2,856,167 239,636 $ 5,412,731 $ 2,541,071 2,900,615 302,571 $ 5,744,257 $ 3,450,655 138,978 1,278,121 242,555 299,353 $ 5,409,662 $ 3,345,920 127,813 1,468,256 250,923 245,544 $ 5,438,456 $ 3,609 $ $ 17,610 $ 33,936 $ 20,679 $ 339,737 305,801 GHTS AND DEMOGRAPHICS FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES General & Administration 8% Community Employment Services 21% DEMOGRAPHICS BY COMMUNITY Fundraising 1% Day Services 14% Burlington / Lyons .............................. 5% Community Support Services 5% Delavan / Darien .............................. 21% East Troy ............................................ 7% Elkhorn ............................................. 22% Fontana / Sharon / Walworth .......... 10% Lake Geneva / Genoa City Center-Based Vocational Services 43% Pell Lake / Williams Bay.................. 21% Whitewater ....................................... 11% Transportation 8% Other ................................................... 3% OPERATIONAL REVENUES BY SOURCE Private Sector Contributions 4% VIP Services Business Generated Revenues 53% Program Service Fees 43% CLIENTS BY AGE RANGE Under 21 7% 56 & Over 25% 22 - 40 32% PROGRAM STATISTICS Case Management Prevocational 17% Exploration & Training Day 32% Programs 16% Competitive Job Placement 16% 41 - 55 36% Job Readiness Services 12% Supported Employment 7% TYPES OF DISABILITIES SERVED CLIENTS BY GENDER Male 59% Female 41% 36% Developmental Disability 23% Mental Illness 14% Physical Disability 5% Sensory Disability 2% Traumatic Brain Injury 20% Other 8 COMMUNITY BUSINESS SOLUTIONS 2011 Corporate Business Partners • American Business Technologies, Lake Geneva • Axel Color USA, Janesville • Badger Press, Inc., Fort Atkinson • Demco, Inc., Madison • Edstrom Industries, Inc., Waterford • Elkhorn Area School District, Elkhorn • Everbrite, LLC, Elkhorn • Haase-Lockwood & Associates, Elkhorn • Huntsman Polyurethanes, Ringwood, IL Business Partner of the Year, Prop Shaft Supply, Inc. Volunteer Exchange Site of the Year, Lakeland Animal Shelter The Lakeland Animal Shelter partners with VIP Services Day Programs in allowing Day Programs clients the opportunity to give back to the community. Every week a group of 3 to 4 client volunteers and a staff member travel to the shelter where they do a variety of tasks to support the care of the animals housed there. Outings at various local and regional destinations expand the horizons of Day Programs clients as well as help them to practice and develop important social skills. Community outings designed to promote social interaction and community integration are an important part of VIP Services’ Day Programs. Outings include a wide range of sites where clients have the opportunity to be exposed to new experiences and information as well as to practice and develop important social skills. Understanding the elements involved in the “garden to table” process has been a real benefit for Day Programs clients who not only grow vegetables in VIP’s donated raised bed garden, but are involved in the harvesting, preparing, cooking and eating the results. The creation of “Tinman George” to help scare away the birds was a special project in 2011. 11 Practical everyday tasks like cooking, cleaning, baking, creating decorations and sewing are important parts of the Day Programs curriculum. Donations have made a small sewing center possible. Life Skills Central also includes a Daily Living Skills program that allows clients to master new basic skills strategies for living independently. Clients meet with staff to review what it will take to enhance their achievement of personal independence and safety and individualized strategies are developed to help them reach their desired outcomes. 2011 SOCIAL HIGHLIGHTS Interacting with the Public in Community Employment Annual Recognition Dinner February 10th Push-Walk-Ride June 26th Client Mardi Gras Dance March 4th Bowl-a-thon March 12th Volunteer Recognition Reception October 13th Halloween Dance October 13th Ultimate Indoor Tailgate Party November 20th Lifelong Empowerment Open June 27th Holiday Party December 9th 12 2011 ANNUAL VIP Services wishes to thank the many philanthropic individuals, corporations, civic organizations and charitable foundations whose gifts, grants, tributes and memorials helped to support the important programs offered in our 2011 program year.
