THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

My dear parishioners,
Have you noticed how healthy is the vegetable garden by the back door of the rectory?! The
plants are lush and green and full of promise. Delightful tomato sandwiches and delicious salads are not
too far away. I have a confession to make though. I didn’t plant it or am I watering it. A wonderful man
with a deep knowledge of horticulture, Pierrot Zogby has put all the labor and time into it. Pierrot was
once the chief grounds keeper of the American embassy in Beruit, Lebanon. He and his wife, Sonja come
to morning Mass here at St. Roch’s very frequently. He lives in Dudley in the apartment complex for the
elderly and doesn’t have sufficient space for a garden; so I happily offered the space here.
Why am I telling you all of this? Well I have learned a good lesson watching Pierrot these
past few weeks. The lesson is patience and persistence. The Scriptures tell us that farmers have to have
patience. His persistence has been admirable. It all has to do with the recent infestation of mice. You see
the garden you are looking at now is the third garden that he had to plant. The fence that has been so carefully arranged around the tender young plants can keep out larger predators, but was of no use when it
came to the mice living in the wall at the back of the garden. Doug has set traps that have eliminated fourteen of them so far.
Persistence against attacks is a deep lesson we all need to take to heart, and under attack we are.
The way of life based on the Gospel is going to be opposed. We are finishing another Fortnight for Freedom this week on Independence Day, July 4th. The freedom to practice our religion in all of its fullness is
being questioned and it is so important that we don’t let it erode away. The persistence that is necessary
for living the commitment to marriage is also a great challenge at this time. Marriage requires not just one,
but many re-commitments.
Let us keep our relationship with Jesus our priority and He will strengthen us to be persistent. I
hope that you will take advantage of the fine publications that are at the doors of the church. Perhaps the
leisure of summer will give you more opportunity for reading something that will inspire you.

RED SOX RAFFLE
Thanks to the generosity of one of our
parishioners, we are able to offer two
tickets to the July 6th Red Sox game vs.
the Texas Rangers (7:10 PM start).
These are fabulous seats. They are in the
EMC Club 3, Row 4, seats 5 & 6. The EMC Club is
located behind home plate and elevated to offer an
excellent view of the field. The tickets include reserved
parking and the package has a value
of $750!

Adult Education and Enrichment is
always a priority at St Roch’s Religious
Education Office. This Summer from July
through August we will begin a course in
Ecclesiology. (For enrichment or catechist
certification)
Question: "What is Ecclesiology?"
Answer: Ecclesiology is the study of the chur ch. The
word Ecclesiology comes from two Greek words meaning "assembly" and "word" - combining to mean "the
study of the church." The church is the assembly of believers who belong to God. Ecclesiology is crucial to understand God's purpose for believers in the world today.

What is the church? Many people today
understand the church to be a building.
This is not the biblical understanding of
church. The root meaning of “church”
is not that of a building, but of people.

What is the purpose of the church? Accor ding to
Scripture, the purpose and activities of the church should
be: (1) teaching Biblical doctrine, (2) providing a place
of fellowship for believers, (3) observing the Lord’s supper, and (4) praying.
God saw that seniors never get enough exercise.
In His Wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys
and other things thus doing more walking. And God
looked down and saw that it was good.
Then God saw there was another need. In His Wisdom
He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop
things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch.
And God looked down and saw that it was good.
Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more
exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good.
So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down
more, remember it's God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.
Well, it is the purpose St. Roch to do our best in each of
these four activities. So, let’s begin with the study of
church. Those preparing towards certification will be
able to complete this course requirement this summer.

The Office of Religious Education will be closed from
July 1st - 10th for vacation. The actual (online) course
will begin July 11th.

Yes, we ladies of St Roch claim our
birthright as joy-filled daughters of God,
and we had so much joy together last
week that we are already planning the
next Tea. Some volunteers have already
come forward planning what they will do, the menu,
and the ambiance. Tables of six can be reserved by

Film Festival for the
Grownups.
Our First Movie, The War Room, was
a great success, with laughter and tears.
We decided to set the last Tuesday of the month
aside to show movies in room 1 of the parish center
at 10:00 AM.
The next film is July 26th TBA. Bring your own snacks
and friends. Everyone is invited.

Volleyball Games
Jesus, the Divine Mercy
St Roch’s Volleyball Team played
on June 27 vs. St. Mary’s of Jefferson,
where the team showed great improvement from the previous week winning
the first game 21-17.
Our team consisted of Maria Romanelli, Cindy Gasiewski, Madison Boulay, Joe Fusco, Rebecca Jalbert,
Dalton Bodreau, and Chloe Zastrow with all showing great teamwork and hustle driving all over the
court.
We lost the second game 21-19 and the third 15-12.
Come see us. We play vs. St. Rose of Lima at 6:00 PM
on July 6 at St. Christopher’s in Worcester.
Practices on Thursday evenings at 6:00 PM at
Green Briar. Youth from grade 7 - graduating seniors

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Act like a beggar who does not back away when he
gets more alms [than he asked for], but offers
thanks the more fervently. You too should not back
away and say that you are not worthy of receiving
greater graces when I give them to you. I know you
are unworthy, but rejoice all the more and take as
many treasures from My Heart as you can carry,
for then you will please Me more. And I will tell you
one more thing: Take these graces not only for
yourself, but also for others; that is, encourage the
souls with whom you come in contact to trust in My
infinite mercy. Oh, how I love those souls who have
complete confidence in Me. (294)”
What a great image we are shown here. Beggars we
are truly, and beggars we need to remain. How we
love to say we are not worthy of the graces that G*d
himself showers upon us. But in this denial something is lost; the statement in itself is not complete.
He knows we are not worthy and yet He still chooses
to give us his most abundant mercy. We must be
willing to reach out and take it. From this abundant
source of wealth we then need to share it with our
family of beggars. Imagine the holy people throughout history and how they shared with us what was
given to their open hands. Graces given to one is not
his or her’s alone, it must be shared. Some souls are
hardened, they refuse to reach out and take what is
freely offered. It is our responsibility to stoop lower
to beg more and offer what we have been given to
these hardened ones. All should be fed even those
closed to his ways. Some will refuse even our best
efforts but we can say we tried and we will always
pray for them.
