Celebrate the Chapter’s
66th Anniversary at Charter Night!
Special weekend also includes a picnic
The Alexandria Jaycees have been helping the community for
66 years, and it’s time to celebrate! Join us on Friday, May
12, for the Charter Night banquet and Sunday, May 13,
for the chapter picnic to celebrate the founding of our great
group. Spend your Friday and Saturday with us and still have
time for Mom on Mother’s Day!
The special weekend begins with a “Springtime Under the
Stars” banquet and awards ceremony at Charter Night,
from 7:30 p.m. until midnight in the Windsor Room of the
Embassy Suites Hotel, 1900 Diagonal Road in Old Town
Alexandria (across from the King Street Metro and where
Café Calliope used to be). The fun starts with a half-hour
social followed by a buffet dinner at 8 p.m. and then an
awards presentation to honor the latest Life Members of
the Alexandria Jaycees. We have purposely shortened the
program so there will be more time for dancing afterward
with music by a DJ. There will be a cash bar throughout the
night, and we’ll also have door prizes.
Paid parking is available under the hotel and there is street
parking around the facility. There is a nice balcony for
smokers and those that enjoy the outdoors. The event is
black tie optional. Discounted rooms are available to those
wishing to stay for the evening. The room is located where
the old Cafe Calliope restaurant used to be. Tickets are $42
per Jaycee member and $45 per guest, and you may pay at
the door.
The next day, Saturday the 13th, join us again for a Jaycee
family picnic. Bring the kids, spouse, significant other or
just yourself to Fort Hunt Park for a picnic with the Jaycees.
There’s even plenty of space to play games or play with
your dog. Fort Hunt Park is located South of Old Town
Alexandria on the George Washington Parkway-Jaycees are
in Spot C3. Take the exit for Fort Hunt Park and follow
the signs for the Jaycee Picnic. There will be hamburgers,
hotdogs and drinks. Please bring your favorite dish as this
is a potluck Picnic. The picnic starts at noon and goes to 6
p.m.

These five outstanding City employees and our special
honoree were recognized on April 20th at the Alexandria
Jaycees’ annual community appreciation night for their
outstanding work and dedication to improving the lives of
the citizens of Alexandria.
A humongous thank you (!) to Sarah Salomon, Stacy
Hickman, and Alicia Auerswald for their help in organizing
and planning for this event; to Patty Lee for taking pictures;
to our bartenders Larry Radford, Mike McCollum, and
Rod Williams; to Kathleen Short and Renee Baynard for
registering our guests; as well as the folks who stayed behind
to become our de facto event clean up crew. A big thanks to
James of the Campagna Center Staff for his unfailing good
will and assistance. Finally, thank you to Goodway Graphics
for providing the program books. If we’ve left anyone off of
this list, we truly apologize — it was a hectic night in a new
location, and we could not have done it without your help.

President’s Message
The merry month of May. Summer is on the way.
Summer =Fun and we have a list of events to help add more
fun to your summer.
The big announcement this month is that there is a new
location for the monthly meetings. The May 22nd meeting
will be at the
House of Klaus 715 King Street
in Old Town Alexandria above Bistro Europa. House of
Klaus has happy hour specials, parking is street parking.
The meetings start promptly at 7:30 pm. Hope to see
everyone at our new meeting location.

Huge Kudos to Amy Tenhouse, Robyn Martin,
Sarah Salomon, Alicia Auerswald and Patty Lee
for all their hard work to make Community
Appreciation Night a huge success. The honorees
couldn’t thank us enough for a wonderful evening.
Mayor Euille had some interesting stories about his
time in Jaycees and how important the Jaycees are to the
community in Alexandria. I’m disappointed more of you
didn’t take the time to attend CAN and get to meet our
honorees.
The JCI mission statement is:
“To contribute to the advancement of the global community
by providing the opportunity for young people to develop the
leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and
fellowship necessary to create positive change.”
This whole newsletter is full of opportunities; you just need
to make the time and effort to seize those opportunities. We
have a hard working group of people providing events and
projects to get you involved. These folks need help to make
these events successful. Your attendance, ideas and help
are needed to make our chapter better. I hope to add your
names to the thank you list and for you to help our chapter
grow into the future.
More kudos to the CD team for a successful Trifecta
weekend. The Jaycees helped a lot of people in Alexandria
in April. I hope everyone enjoyed the Real Estate Seminar
Jennifer Haskins put together. She did a great job and put on
an informative seminar.

Silpada Fundraiser
The Alexandria Jaycees are doing a fundraiser for Camp
Virginia by selling Silpada. Silpada is a sterling silver jewelry
line. 20% of all the retail sales of Silpada items will be
donated to Camp Virginia. They’ll be a Silpada display at the

Saturday & Sunday, June 10 & 11
Alexandria and Fairfax Jaycees join together to form Team
Angels of Hope.
Currently, over one million people get cancer each year.
Nearly half of all men and a little over one third of all
women in the United States will
develop cancer during their lifetimes.
Working with the American Cancer
Society is one of the most powerful
ways you can help to fight this
devastating disease.
Relay for Life is a fun-filled overnight
event designed to celebrate
survivorship and raise money for
the research and programs of your
American Cancer Society. During
our event in June, teams of people
will gather at the George Mason
University track to take turns
walking or running laps through the night. Each team tries
to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
We are still looking for people to join us on team Angels
of Hope to help us fight this disease. If you ever had a
loved one or friend affected by cancer, please think about
joining us. You know how much the money raised can help.

soon. While it may seem like there is still plenty of time
before the event, we

help raise the money

The first stop on the tour is at the Spring Boards to be held
in Fredericksburg. The Spring Boards will be held on May
19 – 21. The registration form can be found on the Virginia
Jaycees website at
www.va-jaycees.org. It is not too late to sign up! The theme
to it is “Back to Old School”. Fredericksburg will be in
charge of the training compared
to the past when the State was in
charge of the training. So come on
down to check out the changes!
Also at the Spring Boards, the
Outstanding Young Virginia
Awards will be given out at the
Saturday night banquet,
which will be followed
by a dance. The board
meeting at Fredericksburg
in May is the closest
meeting to Alexandria this
year and is not that far down I-95
so please consider attending the
event! It should be a lot of fun! Hope to see you there!
The next stop on the tour is at the Virginia’s capitol, the
City of Richmond, where the Richmond, Chesterfield and
Tuckahoe Jaycees sponsor Project W.A.R.M throughout
the year providing firewood that help provide heat for lowincome families each Saturday morning starting at
9:00 am. Contact Fred Clark for more information at

Also while in the Richmond area, the Tuckahoe Jaycees are
looking for volunteers to help sell beer at the NASCAR
races, Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6. The shifts to work
are Friday, 12 pm – 7 pm, Friday, 6 pm to close, Saturday,
12 pm – 6 and Saturday, 5 pm – close. The shift that they
need the most help on is the Friday is the 12–7 shift. If you
decide to help, please give Christine Hopkins a call at
804-874-1976. You will need to give your full name, phone
number, driver’s license number, date of birth and what shift
you want to work.
Moving down from the Richmond area and into the Norfolk
area, the Norfolk Jaycees will be having their annual

cook-out on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:00 pm at the Fred Huette
Center in Norfolk.
Just bring your favorite side dish to share. Please RSVP to

The Peninsula Jaycees will be having their monthly Soup
Kitchen on Sunday, May 21 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
at 8:00 am. Contact Kristy Turnage at KrissyT@cox.net for

Back in Fredericksburg, on Thursday, June 1 is the Herbie
Embrey Golf Tournament. This golf tournament benefits
the Hospice Support Care. The tournament will be held at
Augustine’s Golf Club in Stafford. 1:00 pm is the check-in
time with a 2:00 pm tee time. Contact Jen Adkins for more

Moving closer to home on the tour, the Vienna Jaycees
Farmers’ Market will start in May on Saturday, May 6 from
8 am – noon. The Farmers’ Market is held at the parking lot
behind Town Hall, 127 Center Street, S., Vienna, VA. The
market runs each Saturday throughout the spring and into
the fall.

While staying on in Vienna, Vienna-Reston Restaurant
of the Month or otherwise known as VRROOM
will be held on Thursday, May 18 at Noodles and

rescheduled from the original April 8 to June. Please watch
the list-serve and newsletter for more information on this
fun-filled event.
Financial Article
The Arlington Jaycees will be working at the Monte Carlo
Night on Friday, May 12 from 6:00 pm – 12:00 am at
Top of the Town, 1400 North 14th Street, Arlington. All
proceeds from Monte Carlo Night support RPJ Housing,
which help support development of affordable rental housing
and volunteer home repairs for low-income families in the
area. Enjoy casino games, music, food, drinks and door
prizes. Volunteers working a couple of hours at the Monte
Carlo Night will get free entrance to the event because the
normal price of tickets would normally be $50.00. Contact

Make your reservations now for the Annual Oceanfront
Jaycees White Water Rafting Trip on the New River in West
Virginia. The Oceanfront Jaycees are taking reservations now
for the June 10–12 trip in West Virginia. There is a limited
space on this trip and spots go fast. The early deadline to
sign-up for the trip is May 1st with the cost of the trip is
$120. After May 1st, the cost of the trip will rise. Check out

Oceanfront will also be having a Memorial Day BBQ at 2:00
pm. The cook will be serving BBQ ribs, burgers, and brats.
Summer is here. Financial portfolio high gear time.
Financial events are a great way to meet new people and
learn a few new skills. We need everyone’s help this year
to raise funds for both the chapter and for Camp Virginia
Jaycee. Donate a few hours to your favorite financial
project or two.

July 22–23The 31st Annual Scottish Games
We need volunteers to sell tickets, take tickets
and direct traffic. We need to fill 90 shifts.
All monies from this fundraiser go towards
purchasing trees for the Annual Christmas
Sales, which funds the Holiday Shopping Tour.

Anytime you can spare to help with any of these financial
events is appreciated. We run these projects to finance the
chapter, send Campers to Camp Virginia Jaycee and to help
others in the community. If you have a financial idea or
project you would like to run or pass on. Please let me know.
TIPS training is available the 3rd Thursday of every month at
the Budweiser Building in Washington, DC, located at 2815
V Street off New York Ave and Blandesberg from 6 - 9 pm. You
must call and RSVP to Brenda or Janey at 410-224-2391. The
training is FREE.

Weekend was a resounding
success! You were busy!
• We restored a family
house with Rebuilding
Together Alexandria
(formerly Christmas in
April) Saturday morning.
• We raised money for the
Northern Virginia AIDS
Ministry while having
a blast at an outdoor
dinner in Old Town followed by a swinging party
at the Torpedo Factory Saturday evening (and into
Sunday morning).
• We ate great food and helped the Carpenter’s
Shelter raise money at their Cook-Off event at the
Birchmere on Sunday afternoon.
We were successful and we couldn’t have pulled it off
without you. Because of YOU the Alexandria Jaycees showed
our community that:

Red Cross Waterfront Festival
Join the Alexandria Chapter of the American Red Cross as it
hosts the 25th annual Waterfront Festival. This year, the Festival
will be held on the weekend of June 17 and 18 at Oronoco Bay
State Park in Old
Town Alexandria.

• 8:30 - 10:30 pm (Beer Tent 3)
Anyone who has not received the Red Cross Alcohol Awareness
Training or MCI Tips Training needs to attend a special training
class on Tuesday, June 6, at Red Cross Headquarters. We will
provide more information to those individuals prior to training
class.

Help the Hungry
Join us at the ALIVE! last Saturday food distribution.
ALIVE! generously provides needy families in Alexandria
with supplemental food and produce to help them get
through the month.
The Jaycees, along with other community groups, help to
sort, bag, and distribute donated food and produce. Local
food banks, grocery stores and individuals donate food and
produce to ALIVE! This is such a worthwhile project—the
recipient families certainly appreciate your time and efforts!
So, wake up a little early on May 27th to help us make a
difference in Alexandria.
The ALIVE! Last Saturday Food Distribution runs from 8:30
a.m. to 12 noon at the Cora Kelly Recreation Center at 3600
Commonwealth Ave, Alexandria. If you plan to participate
or want more information, please contact Sarah Saloman at

Second Annual Alexandria
Police Foundation BBQ
The Alexandria Police Foundation (APF) is looking
for volunteers for its annual BBQ to raise money to
assist the Alexandria police. The APF, a nonprofit
charitable organization, works with the Alexandria
Police Department leadership, with the endorsement
of City government, to provide resources to support
such police initiatives as scholarship grants to police
officers and purchase of medical insurance for retired
K-9 police dogs.
The BBQ will be held Sunday, May 21st at the home
of Shawn and Cassie McLaughlin in Alexandria.
Volunteers are needed for two shifts:
• 9:00 am – 12 noon Set up
• 1:00 pm – 5 pm Registration and clean up

CD portfolio meetings are at 7:30 PM on the third
Tuesday of every month at the Panera Bread on Duke
Street in the Alexandria Commons Shopping Center.
