December 2015 Supplement
MVRHS Parent Newsletter MVRHS Special Edition December 2015 Here are the stories that I wasn’t able to include in the Nov/Dec Newsletter along with another bit of the Portfolio Day story… this time I’ve included the photo that was meant to go with it and given proper credit to Elsbeth Todd for both the story and for organizing the trip. Jenn Estabrook Remodel the Bottle Art Competition Prompts Lexus Eco Challenge Entry This past month, the MVironment Club organized a recycled plastic bottle art competition to raise awareness regarding the issues related to single-use plastic water bottles. As part of this competition, one of the organizers, Casey McAndrews, also presented information to Justine’s DeOliveira’s AP Spanish Class, and the class entered a class project in the competition. We had a wonderful response, and listed on the next page are the winners chosen by representatives from Vineyard Conservation Society, the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group, and Biodiversity Works. In addition, we are advocating for Water Bottle Refill Stations to be mounted within our schools as part of our current water fountain systems. We believe that Vineyard Conservation Society is going to fund our first station, and we are in discussion with them now about logistics. So the awareness project may have a wonderful outcome of having the lasting effect of a Refill Station for our school. The team working on the project (pictured above) included Casey McAndrews, Zach Bresnick, Connor Downing, Lucy Ulyatt, and Sarah Thomas. The group has entered the action-based project in the Lexus Eco Challenge. Be sure to come visit the chemistry class hallway to see the awareness display! Thank you to Anna Cotton, Justine DeOliveira, and Jason Neago for working with me to provide these opportunities to our students! Natalie Munn, Science Teacher (See the next page for photos and a list of the winners.) The October Challenge was to create a hanging light that best illuminated a piece of art. Students were given 45 minutes to create the light using a piece of PVC with hooks as a starting structure. The groups then had to wire and mount LED lights onto the PVC in such a way as to maximize the light on the art when the device was suspended from the ceiling. Four light sensors were embedded in the art. Students then hung their lighting devices, and the light picked up by the four sensors was added. The winners were determined by identifying the group with the highest total light value. Thank you to Anna Cotton (Alt Ed Science), Dana Munn (Science), Michael Lavers (Math), and Chris Connors (Art) for working with me as a team to plan and provide these opportunities.
