Agribusiness: Europe and Beyond
Historically, Latin American institutional investors have become more sophisticated,

WESTON HILL Global Investments FORUM: Madrid
Q: In a landscape of volatile market conditions
and low returns in traditional assets and Hedge
Funds, Private Equity still appears to be a
strong alternative. Where do Family Offices see
opportunities nowadays?
JUAN GARRIDO
Managing Partner
Weston-Hill Capital
U.S.
Weston Hill manages investment vehicles in high-yield
financial assets. The Company’s main activities focus on
providing services for M & A,
restructuring, liquidation processes, acquisition and management of distressed debt
for its shareholders, customers and investors.
A: The weak growth in developed economies,
with forecasts for the U.S. around 2.5% and 1.8%
for the eurozone, is not enough to offset the
slowdown in emerging economies. Deleveraging
must continue in the developed world, with
inflation and interest rates very low, and too many
doubts that discourage investment.
Given this outlook, emerging economies must
also face China’s soft (or hard) landing, the
monetary normalization in US and falling prices
in commodities and the developing economies
must face the war in the Middle East, the migrant
crisis in Europe, etc.
In the old times, in this kind of situations, you
typically would invest in gold, US Treasuries or
cash but now interest rates on bank savings
accounts are close to zero, bonds are vulnerable
to rising central bank rates in the US and UK, and
the gold price has been for many years in a bear
market.
In this context, we are under the impression that
we are in a world with no safe havens left.
Of course the big question is where to invest and
of course gold, bonds and cash will remain as
potential safe haven investments in the future but
maybe, we should consider in those days other
alternative safe haven investments like real estate,
agriculture or timber.
Q: Where are the Real Estate Opportunities?
A: In terms of real estate we are seeing a lot of
opportunities in hotels, shopping centres, baskets
of apartments and mortgages loans.
Q: Where are the opportunities in terms of
Small/Mid Caps?
A: In terms of Small/Mid Caps we are seeing a lot
of opportunities, but we are focusing on the agro
business and in the dental chain sector in Spain.
