A Gift That Brings Hope
How to Give Responsibly this Christmas
SALT, a local non-profit organisation located in Tableview, aims to uplift our community and help those who are unable to help themselves. This Christmas, they are
encouraging you to help them spread joy and take the stress off the shoulders of those in need. Here is how you can help this festive season.
EDUCATION
VULNERABLE WOMEN AND BABIES
SALT is bringing hope to families and students in need this Christmas through
their Gifts of Hope Initiative. Their target this year are students who are on their
educational programme, Finishing Strong. Through this programme, SALT assists
students from grade eight all the way through to grade 12. The aim is to support
the student to do well enough to be accepted into tertiary education.
Stationery packs in the beginning of each term is always a huge need. Basic
stationery that so many take for granted is such a massive challenge to single
parents living in poverty-stricken communities. Their students are motivated
and hand-selected by SALT to be part of the programme. To assist the student
holistically, SALT tries to take care of basic needs that could hinder their studies.
A disturbing statistic shows that over 23 000 babies that survive birth die before
they have lived a full year. SALT is involved with vulnerable babies on a daily basis
where basic needs such as formula, nappies and food are essential to keep the baby
from falling ill due to malnutrition and other poverty related illnesses.
Together with local clinics, hospitals and social workers, SALT does their best to
ensure that mothers are given every opportunity to take care of their babies.

Matthew Mole’s
Rise to Success
Purely Local caught up with popular
South African Artist Matthew Mole,
who became an overnight music
sensation from a hit on iTunes.
After the release of his album ‘The
Home We Built’ in 2013, Matthew is
becoming a household name in the
music industry and we couldn’t be
more proud of our local boy.
Purely Local: You have an interesting sound,
combining folk with electronic music. How did you
get to this combination?
Matthew Mole: Well, when I started writing music
I loved both genres, so I tried combining the two.
I wanted to try something different. My music
preferences always change, which causes me to find
different music inspiration and aspirations all the
time.
PL: What did it mean to you to be the opening act
to Carly Rae Jepsen at Grand West in Cape Town?
MM: It was huge. It’s an enormous honour to be the
support for the biggest international acts that come
over, so I was completely thrilled about it!
PL: Who are your influences in life and music?
MM: My wife and my family back in Cape Town, as
well as all of the life lessons that I am learning from
this career.
PL: What is your favourite song that you have
performed or recorded?
MM: Free and Untorn was super fun to record and
is also a great one to play live. It challenges me
quite a bit because I have started playing that song
live on drums alone. It’s always great to create new
challenges. When I play that song live, I play drums
and sing – something I have never done before. It’s
simple, but it’s new to me.
PL: If you could collaborate with any artist, who
would it be?
MM: Chris Martin. He’s such an amazing song writer.
PL: As part of our #PurposeJourney we would like to
know what your purpose in life is.
MM: I just love it when my music has a positive
impact on someone. I want to do whatever I can to
try to expose people to my songs, so that I can try
and impact their lives in a positive way.
PL: What’s next for you?
MM: I’m working very hard and finishing my second
album. A lot of work has gone into it so far and I’m
very excited about it. Next year will see a lot of
touring.

DIY
VIN D’EASEL
”Small Art for Big People.”
Launched this year, Vin d’Easel is a concept that arose from a local married
couple, Christine and Warren Bernard’s, love for photography, illustration and
art. They wanted to combine these elements to produce a tangible product to
share with the public. Basically small artworks perched on miniature easels;
their work has become quite popular.
When they came up with the name Vin d’Easel, they
wanted to create a title with a play on words. “When
you read the name out loud, it sounds like Vin Diesel,
obviously referencing the Hollywood actor. We wanted
to keep things lighthearted and humourous and
thought that the juxtaposed difference in size between
the product and the star, and the similarity to his name
would be quite funny. Also, ‘vin’ means ‘wine’ in French,
so that has to be a good thing,” laughs Warren. “Art is
something we feel should be accessible to everyone not only those who earn a huge paycheck. We wanted
to supply people with an affordable, aesthetically
pleasing product that didn’t need a massive space to
be displayed in. These products are small enough to
be placed on a work desk or side table for instance, so
that it can be viewed on a daily basis,” he says.
Purely Local: What inspired you to start your
YouTube channel?
Suzelle: My neighbour Hennie is amazing with
‘the computer stuff’, and helped me one day to put
together a video. I was just trying to have a bit of fun,
but it became an addiction.
PL: What has been your most challenging project
and why?
S: Definitely ‘How to Make a Bobotie in a Pumpkin’. I
even broke my oven while doing it.
On their website, they not only showcase their own
petite art works, but they also have a ‘featured artist’
where they give exposure to other artists. “We’ve
always believed in and encouraged the concept of
collaboration, so we felt that it would be great to
work with other like-minded artists to reach a greater
audience. Apart from the exposure, artists who are
featured also receive commission from each piece of
theirs that is sold,” explains Warren.
At the moment, they sell their products from their
website as well as at the newly established Big Bay
Market. They are in the process of approaching various
stores to stock their goods too. “We have just come up
with a range of new products, such as double-sided,
reversible artworks to suit your mood, as well as a few
others that are a secret for now. Customers can also
provide us with suggestions or their own art which
we then print and supply in the same format,” he says.

Suzelle is our own local internet
sensation from Somerset West who
started DIY videos that have gone
viral worldwide. Through creativity
and spontaneity, Suzelle decided to
start her video blog with her friend
Marianne and her neighbour Hennie,
not realising what success it would
draw. With blogs such as ‘How to
make a Braai Pie’ and ‘How to Iron
Without an Iron’, SuzelleDIY offers
good tips in a humorous way. We
chatted to Suzelle to get the ins and
outs of her busy lifestyle.
PL: What has been your proudest moment in your
career to date?
S: I was so excited when my Braai Pie video went
viral. It felt so good to be recognised for something
I am so passionate about doing.

Loki Rothman is a local singer and guitar virtuoso that
has been making waves in the South African music
industry over the past few years. An incredible, versatile
guitar player, Loki is well-known as Jack Parow’s talented
guitarist as well as for having been in the Top Six of SA’s
Got Talent Season One. We caught up with him to find
out more about him and his future plans.
Purely Local: When did you start playing guitar?
Loki Rothman: When I was 11 years old. I took my
grandfather’s guitar off the wall and just tried it
out.
PL: What is it like to work with Jack Parow, such a
well-known South African artist?
LR: It’s really cool. Before I started taking my guitar
playing seriously, I was very into hip hop. I was
listening to Eminem, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. It’s
funny how I ended up playing for a rap artist and
also opened for Eminem and Snoop Dogg when
they were in South Africa. I get to travel to places
I would have never seen on my own, even just in
South Africa, and we have crazy, fun times on the
road.
PL: What inspires your music and lyrics?
LR: The first album The Way Back was pretty much
inspired by events in my life from 2010 up until
2013. I also get inspired by other people’s stories, as
well as movies. For example, my new single Under
the Stars was inspired by some scenes from the
movie Life of Pi.
PL: Do you feel that your Syndactyly condition (the
condition of having some or all of the fingers or
toes wholly or partly united) prompted you to work
harder and prove to yourself and others that you
can do it?
LR: No, my parents never told me what really
happened. I never knew the full story up until the
age of 21, so it was never really a thing. To me
it was always a case of my fingers were webbed
together and it got separated at birth – as simple
as that. It was only later that I found out about all
the drama and 24 operations that I had to have.
PL: Did you always want to sing or did it just
happen gradually with your love for guitar playing?
LR: It just happened. I always asked other people
to perform with me and let them do the vocals, but
somewhere down the line I just started performing
solo and doing it myself.
PL: What big plans do you have for the future?
What can fans look forward to?
LR: I’m planning and working on some new material
and organising touring. The next step will be to
smash my The Way Back album into the Syndactyly
DVD/CD and hear the result. I think my sound has
varied quite a lot and I’ve proven to myself that I
can do a lot of different styles. I know now how it
should sound; it’s just a case of executing it.
PL: What makes this album different from the rest?
CH: This is a real solid band album. It has a strong
acoustic vibe to it and we also experimented with
other instruments such as banjos, etc. Every song is
our best work and it’s not mainstream as no techno
equipment was used – people need to believe our
sound.
PL: What have you been up to in the last couple of
years?
CH: We’ve still been touring, mostly in Europe. We
weren’t on a break, but more of a studio break.
Howie Combrink [drummer] and I have released solo
albums. Everything has been redone like our website
and social media pages so we got up to speed. There
is also a new energy in our band, which is great.
PL: What is Watershed’s biggest accomplishment to
date?
CH: Indigo Girl will always be our greatest
accomplishment. It was our first smash hit and it
really set the pace for us and helped us maintain a

Purely Local: Tell us about your latest album Watch
the Rain?
Craig Hinds: This is our fifth album. We did a Best of
album in 2010, so Watch the Rain is our first studio
album in seven years. It took us 18 months to get it
ready and perfect for release. It’s going back to our
roots and was fun to create.

PL: Do you find it difficult to listen back to some of
your more emotional songs?
LR: No, not at all. I think writing the songs would be
my way back to feeling okay again and also closing
the book on something.

PL: Do you have any advice for up-and-coming
artists or bands in South Africa?
CH: Don’t get caught up in the industry. It’s not
an easy industry, people fear it and try to fit
in and if you do that you will come last. Just
do your thing - just be you. Find a label that
believes in you and your work.
PL: Which artist or band (dead or alive) would
you love to collaborate with?
CH: Adam Duritz from Counting Crows. I think
he is the best lyricist out there.
PL: Any last words?
CH: Believe in what your purpose is. Enjoy every
day. Do the best you can do and just enjoy it.

Liezel van der Westhuizen, a well-known South African personality, is
known for her morning slot on the KFM Breakfast show, and her amazing
contribution to numerous charity organisations in South Africa. She has
built a name for herself in the entertainment industry through being a TV
and radio personality, inspiring many with her caring and friendly nature,
her drive for success and her zest for life. We caught up with her to find out
what life is like in the eyes of Liezel.
Purely Local: What is a typical day like in the life
of Liezel?
Liezel van der Westhuizen: Crazy, fun and
exciting. I am always on the run, starting with
early mornings on KFM Breakfast, and continuing
with photoshoots, voiceovers, filming movies
and travelling. Somewhere in between all this
mayhem, I find time to train too.
PL: You’ve been both a radio and TV presenter. Are
you more comfortable in front of the camera or
behind the microphone?
LvdW: I love both. I love the preparation that goes
into being on camera, for instance learning and
practicing lines, the make-up and the pampering
that gets you camera ready. On the other hand, I
enjoy the spontaneity of being on radio, it teaches
you to speak on demand and go with the flow.
PL: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
LvdW: I enjoy stand-up paddling in our beautiful
oceans, sitting down with a good book, and
walking my special little dog Leia (Dachshund
crossed with a Jack Russel), that I adopted from
the SPCA a few months ago. Leia is too precious,
and on days when I am very busy, I drop her off
at crèche, called The Woof Shack Doggie Daycare,
where she spends the day with her pooch pals.
PL: What does giving back mean to you and how
important is it in your life?
LvdW: I am fortunate to be able to be a part of so
many great projects that give back. I believe that
giving back doesn’t always need to involve money,
because many people can’t do that but, being able
to give your time is just as valuable. One project I
am currently assisting with is Velokhaya, a cycling
academy giving underprivileged children the
opportunity to take part in an after-school activity,
which builds their self-esteem and keeps them
out of trouble.
PL: What is your purpose in life? #PurposeJourney
LvdW: I live for giving back to organisations and
worthy causes, and if not for my current lifestyle,
that would be my main focus. With regards to
being in the media, my main purpose is to teach
people that it is okay to be different and that
being yourself is the best possible option.

Bureo turns derelict plastic fishing nets
into high-quality skateboard decks with plans to go global.
In today’s fast paced world, the amount of pollution that enters the
natural environment on a daily basis is highly concerning. Massive
amounts of plastic flood our oceans each year, and according to
the United Nations, old fishing nets account for more than 10% of
plastic pollution. With fishing being a global industry, this evergrowing issue leads to major degradation of our ocean's ecosystems.
Bureo is a new venture based in the United States and Chile. This
fresh, unique business opportunity was formed by three passionate
individuals that are focused on finding solutions for the growing
issue of ocean plastic pollution, whilst initiating social change. As
their first product, the team has created a 25-inch cruiser skateboard
deck made from recycled fishing nets. These innovative boards are manufactured in Chile through the
team’s initiative ‘Net Positiva’ - Chile’s first ever fishnet collection and
recycling program that is aimed at fighting the detrimental impacts of
discarded fishing nets. This outstanding initiative provides fishermen
with environmentally friendly disposal points, while Bureo receives
highly recyclable and durable raw materials. For each board produced,
riders help keep more than thirty square-feet of fishnet out of the
oceans, in support of Chilean fishing communities.
The name ‘Bureo’ originates from the native Chileans’ Mapuche
language, meaning ‘the waves’. Their mission as a company alludes
the comparison between how a wave originates from a disturbance
of wind along the ocean surface, to Bureo initiating change – a small
change in an ocean of plastic.

With their continuous drive to expand on their recycling programs and
make a difference, Bureo has recently launched ‘Push for Tomorrow’ a movement aimed at uniting the board riding culture, encouraging
riders of all crafts to take responsibility for the health of the ocean
in order to secure a cleaner tomorrow. Push for Tomorrow is a rally
for the younger generations, encouraging them to live a sustainable
life, support local clean-up and recycling efforts, create awareness
around the threats that are influencing our natural playgrounds, and
to be a part of the solution.
Bureo is determined to be innovative, and find solutions to utilise
the plastics. The next skateboard model in the pipeline is geared
for higher performance riders, and will tie in with surfers that are
looking to tune their skills on the sidewalks. Bureo boards represent
a positive solution to the negative issues that are impacting our
oceans, creating a unique category within the skate industry. Their
key focus is skateboards, but their new sunglass line for which they
have partnered with Karun eyewear in Chile, is a great example of
where they can take their programs.

Toni Enderli
How do you challenge yourself to become a
better person? You tackle your fears and leave
your comfort zone. Toni decided to attempt open
water swimming – and his goal was not a small
one. He even dedicates his open water swimming
career to helping people within his community,
encouraging him to reach his goals as it has a
bigger purpose. “To find happiness, fulfilment
and value in living, I will seek out and experience
all of the pleasures and joys that life has to offer.
My core values are not limitations restraining
me on the hedonistic quest for fun. Rather, they
provide a framework for identifying, pursuing and
achieving those pleasures that last the longest
and are the most satisfying. I believe that the
greatest joy of all is being worthy of the respect
and admiration of family, friends and business
associates,” says Toni Enderli.
He embarked on his open water swimming
journey in 2009. “The freedom, connection with
nature and pure challenge associated with it had
me right from the start – I was hooked. It has
become the catalyst for the rest of the challenges
I face. The drive I developed for swimming
seeped into all the other areas of my life – career,
family and personal goals. The way in which I
began to face these aspects was the way in which
I had learned to face my swimming challenges
– with passion, unwavering determination and
maximum positivity,” says Toni.
Swimming is about more than just the challenge
for him. He does it to show his family and friends
that anything is possible, in order to keep fit, and
he uses it as a tool to make a difference in the
community. “Open water swimming has taught
me that it does not matter how old or young or
you are, nothing is impossible and whatever you
put your mind to, you can achieve – if you want it
badly enough!” exclaims Toni.
Toni believes that the position or situation you
are in does not matter. As long as you never
give up and carry on moving forward, you will
eventually get through it – like any strong
current. You have to push your own boundaries
in order to grow and learn. To do that, you need
to keep asking questions and strive to grow on
a daily basis. “If you stay within your comfort
zone you will never grow or experience life at its
fullest. Open water swimming has taught me to
live and embrace the ‘moment’, and to be thankful
and humble for what I have,” he says.
One of his first swims was a real challenge. He had
to swim a mile in water that was three degrees (a
world first for the ice swimming association). His
goal with this challenging swim was to collect
blankets and food for the underprivileged. He
then swam a double Robben Island and a route
around Cape Point to raise funds for children with
terminal cancer. This led to more challenging
conquests including swimming the Straights of
Gibraltar to raise funds to teach underprivileged
children how to swim.
Swimming across the English Channel from
Dover to France was to be his biggest challenge
to date and, after two years of brutal training and
astronomical costs, the time had come to face
‘Summit H20’. Swimming the English Channel
was no small feat. He struggled through the
water that was a temperature of 13.5 degrees,
but a swarm of jelly fish and wayward currents
prevented him from finishing. “The death of a
fellow swimmer that day makes me thank God
that I swallowed my pride and accepted defeat,”
expresses Toni.
It was then time for him to face his nemesis

man who strives to help and inspire individuals in his
community. The Founder of Realtor of Excellence, he is a
business man but with a bigger purpose. He decided to go on
a journey to discover his ‘why’ in life. Realising that his family
comes first and that he must be a role model for his children,
he wanted to leave a legacy that will make a difference.

South African that has given up hope or is going
through a rough patch. To those people, I would
like to say: in the end, the billionaire gets buried
next to the street sweeper. We all end up as dust.
Life is short – try and have no regrets and strive
toward your dreams! In order to do this one
needs to have a strong sense of persistence – the
refusal to quit. It means looking into the face
of adversity, saying “I like my odds” and having
an unwillingness to step aside. To persist is to
believe in your cause and not allow yourself to
be distracted by anything.”
The fact that he finally looked his fear and failure
in the face and conquered it made him adamant
to share his experience and with it his inspiring
message with others. “Never ever give up! What
does not kill you makes you stronger. No matter
what you have gone through in your life or what
you are currently going through – you have the
opportunity to grow from it. Reflection is the key
to never making the same mistake again. These
words have helped me get through my toughest
times both personally and on a business level.”

SPICE4LIFE YOUTH ACADEMY
“Win or Lose, I will Always Do My Best.”
The youth is our future. What are we doing to help them fulfill their full
potential? SPICE4LIFE Youth Academy aims to nurture young talent and help
make a lasting difference in our community. We took a closer look at this
amazing initiative started by Michelle Korevaar, CEO of SPICE4LIFE, an online
lifestyle magazine that strives not only to entertain, but to empower and
make a difference through telling stories that count.
“I met Mandla Tyobidyasi in 2009, while serving as the Vice President for the
Cape Coast Chamber of Commerce, where I managed the outreach committee.
He had a wish to improve the lives and futures of the underprivileged youth in
the Dunoon area by playing soccer with them. As I worked with him, his passion,
commitment and intentions touched my heart and I knew this was the start of
something meaningful and special.” – Michelle Korevaar, CEO of SPICE4LIFE.
Michelle and Mandla have continued to build a relationship by sharing their
passion and supporting each other since then. They registered a non-profit
organisation with Mandla’s wife Mary-Ann, and on the children’s insistence
called it ‘SPICE4LIFE YOUTH ACADEMY’. Their overall mission was to show
love and support and to nurture children in whichever way they may need it,
assisting them to reach their full potential.
“It’s harder than a person realises. How do you go about nurturing children
when they don’t even know where their next meal is coming from?”
Their point of entry is through community leaders encouraging participation
in their soccer club and fun get-togethers. Through this they develop life
skills and are able to address social issues that are identified. They aim not
only to show them the joy in team sports, but also that they must live by the
motto “win or lose, I will always do my best”.
“When life beats you down, it’s attitude that helps you to keep getting up.
Teaching children a winning life culture, how to make better decisions,
recognise the importance of teamwork, and support each
other’s goals and dreams – that’s what counts.”
Nutrition, clothing and social issues are all addressed on a
need-to-need basis and priority goes to the cases where
children are compromised. However, the demand is becoming
bigger than they can cope with and they are desperate for
some support from the greater community.
“The concept to actually be involved and active, showing
support, care and interest, giving time, love, hope and positive
solutions into the children’s lives, means we need to have a
space where we can do that. I try to go in and spend time with
them as often as possible, Mandla is with groups of them every
day, but logistics are the biggest challenge. If we are lucky, we
get to use the community centre. Our soccer teams practice
on the sides of the N7. It makes my hair stand on end! We
have other places that have offered, but transport costs are a
nightmare and how can we warrant hundreds of Rands for that
cost when we have hungry kids?”
Working in collaboration with community leaders, initiatives
and volunteers is how they have made the past six years
transpire into a following of over 300 children who
consistently partake in the Youth Academy activities. Their first
step in the right direction was to use sport as a tool to connect
and interact with children from underprivileged communities.
Through this they can address grass root issues whilst still
allowing them to have fun and look at the positive side of life,
as a child should.
The opening point of contact and engagement is to congregate
and engage with children. It is an arena that they automatically
chose, as it is fun, healthy and teaches them life skills. It also
teaches them how to partake in team sports, motivate them
to win, accept loss, and provide a community with which they
can engage and address self-worth, identify and talent. It also
gives SPICE4LIFE the opportunity to identify problems that
need to be addressed and bring an overall productive and
winning spirit into the lives of these children who often grow
up in very morbid surroundings. It has allowed the organisation
to establish connections, trust and good memories with the
children. Letting each child – from very small through to the
18 year olds, know that they count and are cared for is very
important. Assistance with day-to-day survival through food
parcels, clothes and toiletries as well as an element of social
work is also often needed.
A team against all odds. Michelle who gets called “The White
Granny”, Mary-Ann who is a compassionate mother figure,
Mandla who is a strong leader and role model to the children,
with the extended assistance from community leaders and
volunteers, form a dynamic team that provide mentorship and
support that brings camaraderie, skill set and activities to the
children in the Dunoon community. Not only do SPICE4LIFE

aim to make a difference in the Dunoon community, but they
want to create a blueprint protocol that can be adopted by
other communities.
The youth academy has great potential – and not just for
children. It holds opportunities to also reach out to the
parents of these children. Michelle, Mandla and Mary-Ann all
work full days and the Youth Academy now needs to embrace
the demand by sourcing sponsorship and funding. Their hopes
are to open a Youth Development Centre which will assist
them to empower through Life Skills and Vocational Skills
Development offered by different volunteer guest visits. The
objective of this is to educate and empower disadvantaged
people who have the will to learn and create the possibility
of future employment or entrepreneurship. This gives average
people who want to make a difference an opportunity to
participate and be involved.

The SPICE4LIFE Youth Academy’s Soccer Club
has, since its inception, grown at a rapid pace and
now consists of a number of teams, ranging from
U9 to U19. They have fared exceptionally well,
is officially recognised as a football club, and all players are registered with SAFA (South African
Football Association) and take part in various leagues in and around Cape Town. Every child in the
Youth Academy, boy and girl alike, aspire to their teams partaking in these leagues.
In the last season, the U19’s won their local league, participated with over 500 teams in the Coca-Cola
Cup to make it to the final eight and now embark on a dream come true – the semi-pro SAB Castle Cup
league for the duration of summer. It’s almost unheard of that a bunch of kids with their circumstances
actually get to make it this far and have a semi-professional status compared to the other clubs in the
area. Thanks to donations, they have managed to get these kids some of the necessary kit, equipment,
transport, entrance fees and refreshments they need to enable them to practice and take part in this
amazing opportunity.
“It’s heartbreaking really, almost all of the kids have secondhand boots that aren’t even their right size,
we have a mix and match of outfits and no one locally would help us with a home field. The team is being
noticed by some industry gurus, putting us forward as the underdog favourites. In the meantime, we’re
praying for a miracle that someone out there sees the far-reaching value of this and helps us give this team
some dignity by covering some of the necessary costs. We would like to thank Nick Meyer, our volunteer Team
Manager, and his amazing network that have helped us get the necessary registration requirements in place
to get the team to kick off.”

Celebrating Operation Smile
Operations Smile was founded in 1982, when Doctor William (Bill)
P.Magee JR, a plastic surgeon, and his wife Kathleen (Kathy), a
nurse and clinical social worker, travelled to the Philippines with
a group of medical volunteers to repair children’s cleft lips and
palates. What they discovered was overwhelming. “People pushed
their babies at us and tugged at our sleeves with tears in their
eyes, begging us to help their children,” recalls Kathy. When they
were in Naga City, approximately 300 families arrived, hoping that
their children would be able to receive surgery. However, only
40 children could be treated. Upon departure, Dr. Magee and his
wife promised that they would return one day in order to fix more
children’s smiles.
Inspired by the change they made, they began soliciting donations
of surgical equipment and supplies from manufacturers, threw
themselves into grassroot fundraising and put together a volunteer
team of 18 doctors, nurses and technicians for their own medical
mission to the Philippines. Here they helped approximately 100
more patients, but again many were left hopeful yet disappointed.
It was then that they realised that their plan had to be expanded,
and Operation Smile was born.
Today the organisation in an international medical charity with a
global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers
from over 80 countries, and is helping to improve the health
and lives of children from over 60 countries. Together, 220,000
free surgical procedures for children and young adults born
with a cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformities have been
provided. In order to make a long-lasting impact, Operation Smile
trains doctors and local medical professionals in partner countries
so that they’re empowered to treat their local communities. They
also donate medical equipment and supplies and provide yearround medical treatment through their worldwide centres.
Operation Smile is a non-profit volunteer
medical organisation that provides free
reconstructive facial surgery. In just 45
minutes, a life is made beautiful. We took
a closer look at this amazing organisation
and everything they do to help change lives.
THEIR PURPOSE
Operation Smile dreams of a world where no child suffers from a
lack of access to safe surgery, but the unfortunate truth is that, for
too many children around the world, safe surgery is not an option.
The organisation believes that every child deserves exceptional
surgical care and that all children deserve to be treated as if they
were Operation Smile’s own children. This drives the organisation,
its volunteers and global network of medical professionals, who
donate thousands of hours towards the care of children around
the world each year. Each one of them is moved every day to make
a difference in the lives of children that they have never even met.

When baby Karli Pienaar was born, her parents Anerie and Willie,
were ecstatic. However, she was born with a facial deformity. Even
though Anerie loved her baby, she immediately felt that she had
given her husband a ‘broken’ baby. However, they wanted to find
a solution. Having exhausted all funds on post-operative care,
Anerie and Willie were determined to not give up. They spent
hours researching and understanding what a cleft lip and or cleft
palate entailed. They learnt how to feed baby Karli and to care
for her. Their search proved most fruitful when they came across
Operation Smile. By the time Karli was 19 days old, Anerie had
made contact with Operation Smile and Karli was placed on a
waiting list. On 13 September 2014, Karli received her surgery.
Aside from giving baby Karli a new smile, her whole family found
reason to smile. “We have not had it easy the past couple of years,
but we made it. Finally, things are looking up. We are not lucky, we
are blessed,” says Anerie.

A GREEN SHOPPER EXPERIENCE
Bayside Mall, located on the corner of West Coast (R27) road and Blaauwberg road,
has been paving the way for the future with their new sustainable approach to running the centre. One of the region’s biggest shopping malls, it is the go-to, nearby
centre for all your needs.
Their ‘Go Green’ campaign was started in 2013 and
is a R13 million project – an investment that aims
to reduce their carbon footprint. Although there
is no return, they hope to inspire other companies
and households to attempt to do the same –
whether it is on a small or large scale. One of the
first operations of its kind and magnitude in the
Southern Hemisphere, they currently have three
major projects:

The project’s aim is to switch to green technology in
order to operate the 45 000 square meter shopping
centre. The owners, Acucap Investments (Pty) Ltd,
invested R13.3 million in the project. The first
project to be completed was the harvesting of rain
water and this took about four months to complete.
Storm water runs from the centre’s roof and water
from the canal next to the centre is also collected.
It is then gathered in tanks that are strategically
placed throughout the centre. The main storage
tanks can hold up to 60 kilolitres of water, which
in turn provides the shopping centre with at least
three consecutive days of toilet flushing. Shoppers
might have noticed that the toilet water is slightly
discoloured, and this is because of this system.
The solar power system, a 500kW solar plant, was
next on the list and was the most labour intensive
as it required 20 workers for five months in order
to set up the solar panels on the roof. This first
required that the roof had to be strengthened in
order to support the hefty structure of the 2108
panels, roughly taking up the space of half a rugby
field.
The energy generated from these panels goes
into the centre’s electricity grid, providing ‘green
electricity’ for tenants and shoppers. An interesting
fact is that the energy generated is enough to run
a household for about 145 days, which proves its
effectiveness.
The most recent green system that was introduced
to Bayside Mall is the waste to energy project. This
project takes organic waste such as food waste from
the centre’s tenants and places it on a conveyor belt.
This belt goes through a macerator and is then
pushed into a digester, generating Biogas which
in turn is then converted into energy. This energy
equals about the amount of energy an electric car
would need to travel 3 000km.
The proof is in the pudding, as the solar and waste
to energy projects together can save the centre
approximately 2 710 units of electricity per day.
The centre is passionate about becoming more selfsufficient and reducing their waste to landfill. They
are excited about expanding their green systems.
Solar PV is set to drastically change to energy scene
in South Africa and centres like Bayside Mall will
pave the path for other companies to follow in their
footsteps.
A truly exciting initiative, it shows what a big difference
individuals and organisations can really make in order
to reduce our carbon footprint and ensure a better
future for generations to come. With electricity costs
ever on the rise, these projects encourage others to
adopt it and the future looks bright for a sustainable,
more responsible future.
The process does not stop there, however. The
cleaned storm water also goes to the centre’s
irrigation system to water the gardens.
The prediction is that the centre will save at least
R200 000 in the first year of operation.

Local married couple, Jaimi and husband Adrian Shields, moved to
Tableview from Durban just over a year ago, with the intention of
providing something special to Cape Town, but without knowing what
it would be.
The couple was inspired whilst walking on the beach past the Big Bay
Surf Lifesaving Club. They decided that Bloubergstrand needed its own
special market, and they were going to make it happen. The I Love Big
Bay Market was born and traders flocked to get a stall for the launch
of this exciting event.
The growing popularity of markets in Cape Town encouraged the couple
to add a different dynamic to the I Love Big Bay Market, launching it
as a monthly, mid-week, evening event, giving families a break from

Oh, Darling!
The town of Darling is an underrated, quaint gem on the Cape
West Coast. Many people think that it is too far away, and
although it does feel like a different world when you are there,
it is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town city centre. A weekend
away in Darling will rejuvenate your soul and you will be in awe
at everything in this cultural hub on the West Coast. We explored
this hidden gem of a town and everything it has to offer.
Even though each room is so indescribably lovely, you will
want to spend lots of time in the garden. With blossoming
bougainvilleas arching over a small table with chairs, a
crystal clear round pool, a circular seating area wrapped
around a boma fire, a long table with chandeliers – you will
feel like you are in heaven.
You can dine out in Darling, but ensure that you eat at
Maison de L’amour at least one night. You need to book and
confirm your chosen items on the menu in advance. We had a
three course meal that blew us away! Beautifully presented,
generous portions and indulgent, her dishes will haunt you
and make you crave it again. For our starter we had the
summer prawn salad. Crisp and flavourful, it was a good
choice for a first course. For our main meal, we went for the
fillet steak. Buttery soft steak on top of a bed of creamy mash
and topped with fresh asparagus, it was the epitome of fine
dining. Finishing it off with a sweet dessert, we were treated
to Hooligan’s Juice (Dom Pedro), chocolates and strawberries.
Dining by candlelight and red roses, it was the perfect
romantic dinner. Nina and her right-hand man Smiley made
the night run smooth and ensured that it was memorable.

what to buy – she is your ‘inside woman’ to Darling. Here are

Surfer Dude
In one of our previous issues, we spoke to a local photographer by the name “Justasurferdude” after discovering
his pictures on Instagram. When we interviewed him, he wanted to remain anonymous and rather let his
photos do the talking. We decided to catch up with him again to see where his photography has taken him and
if we could find out more about him. Over a cup of coffee he revealed to us that, since the last interview, he has
actually decided to wave his 9-5 job goodbye and focus instead on his true passion: adventure photography.
He has now made it his profession and admits there might be more benefit now in revealing his true identity…
His name is Manie van der Hoven and he
lives in Tableview. He takes beautiful, moody
photographs that captures a feeling instead
of just an event. His Instagram account,
@justasurferdude, is one that you simply have
to follow. “I have always had a passion for
photography, but I have only been taking photos
with a DSLR camera for the last four years. I
used to only take photos with my phone and
point-and-shoot cameras,” says Manie. “I have
now realised that I want to slow down my life,
reduce the amount of travelling that was part
of my job as the Environmental Manager for an
international oilfield company and spend more
time with my family and on the beach. I am
hoping to make a living out of something I love,
if that is possible?”
When it comes to the purpose behind his
photography, he wants to encourage people to
look beyond pretty pictures and to go outside
and experience the outdoor lifestyle themselves.
“I need to mention that I prefer not to take
‘posed’ photos, unless it is for a photo shoot as
requested by a client. Even when I do, I usually
get better shots in between the posing. I prefer
photos that are taken in the moment, it captures
the true atmosphere and reduces the element of
“acting” – impromptu action shots in a natural
setting.”
Something that is also important to Manie is
that a picture must focus on what you were
experiencing at the time instead of where
you were. “A picture of a picnic or a walk on
the beach with Table Mountain far in the
background speaks volumes more than just a
posed shot in front of a landmark that screams
“I was here, got the picture to prove it!” When
it comes to editing, he does not rely on filters.
“I feel offended when people ask me what filters
I use. I enhance my photos with basic photoediting software like most photographers do”, he
explains. “For my Instagram photos I sometimes

use filters, but then I often pair a fitting quote
with the image, focusing on the message rather
than the aesthetics of the scene”.
We have loved following Manie’s journey and

PL: Who do you look up to?
JvdS: My kitesurfing role model definitely has to be
Tom Bridge. He is a talented kiter and he’s only 14. I
really want to be like him one day.
PL: What does your training programme look like?
JvdS: In summer, my training programme is full. I kite
seven days a week if possible. I occasionally go down
to the local gym to strengthen my knees so that I don’t
get any injuries. In winter, my programme is a lot more
chilled.
PL: Why do you love living in Melkbosstrand?
JvdS: I love it because I have a passion for the ocean.
All my stress disappears when I hear or see the ocean.
It’s also really nice for me that I don’t have a long drive
if I feel like going for a kitesurf.

Do you remember that photo of the Table Mountain
sandcastle on the beach with Table Mountain in the
background? Manie was the artist behind the sandcastle
and his wife actually snapped the photo, not realising that
it will go viral on the internet. Manie says his wife keeps
reminding him that it was the 'non-photographer' in the
family whose photo went viral.
Purely Local: What inspired you to take up kitesurfing?
Jason van der Spuy: My dad inspired me because he is
also a kitesurfer, but my main inspiration to start was
Luke McGillewie. I met him when I was four years old,
and since that day I was really motivated to kitesurf.
He gave me advice on what to do and also trained me.
PL: Specific equipment you would recommend?
JvdS: I would recommend Liquid Force. Their kites are
really good and they’ve got a kite for anyone’s riding
style.
Purely Local spoke to Jason van
der Spuy, a 13-year-old kitesurfer
from Melkbosstrand. He started
kitesurfing at the young age of
seven years old. His love for kiting,
however, started at the age of
four years old already and has
only grown since then. He recently
took part in the Junior World
Championship in Spain. We found
out more about his future plans.
Did you know?
PL: Any advice for other kitesurfers?
JvdS: I would recommend that you must never be too
shy to ask for advice. It really helped me when I asked
someone to explain a trick or to show me what I’m
doing wrong. Also, never be scared to try new things
because if you never try it, it will never happen.
Already so passionate and talented at his young age,
Jason shows other youngsters that anything is possible
and you do not have to be a ‘grown up’ to reach your
dreams.

six Days of Non-Stop Fighting to Crown a True World Champion
rules that gives every fighter from all hand combat disciplines an
equal opportunity to obtain the most prestigious title to date, the
Last Fighter Standing World Champion,” says Darius Jakovchuk,
LFS Representative.
In addition to the thrilling Last Fighter Standing World
Championship, elite athletes who crave the chance to fight for
a prestigious LFS Regional title, fighters can take part in one of
the five regional championships. Each of these is an individual
stand-alone championship tournament, open only to those
residing within the designated region. The five regions are AsiaOceania, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and The Americas. Male
and female fighters from selected countries within these regions
will compete to accumulate points in their home country. The top
ranked individuals will be given the honour of representing their
country in the exhilarating battle for the title of Regional LFS
Champion. The 16 men and 16 women will take part in countryversus-country knockout rounds until only one warrior of each
gender stands triumphant.
The regional championships will deliver more of the whiteknuckle action, delivered up-close and personal from the
specialised hexagon ring, that has made adrenaline addicts out of
the LFS spectators. While the same time creating global exposure
and international opportunities for the fighters, boosting their
incomes and careers, and therefore adding to the development of
the martial arts globally.
Before flashy television stunts and
lengthy lists of complicated rules,
before fancy modern arenas and special
effects, there were fighters who met
each other on dirt floors and run down
barns, facing off with only their talent
and the sheer will to succeed in the
domination of the battle.
The Last Fighter Standing stands for patriotism, cultures of all
martial arts and combat sports, equality for men and women,
your fight, your destiny and showbiz entertainment. Last
Fighter Standing strives on highlighting the heritage and the
thousands of years of history that comes with each martial art

The programme for 2016 is to host a Last Fighter Standing
South African Championship that consists of five tournaments.
Four provincial elimination round tournaments will take place,

a build up to the SA Championship, then followed by the African
Championship that will incorporate the top 16 African countries.
What makes LFS different and better than the current platform
on the market are the following factors. The rules are designed
to suit all fighting styles and are aimed at increasing spectator
entertainment. There are three rounds, each being two minutes,
to create high impact fights. There is a 20-second limit on the
ground to promote more stand up action and deliver more
spectacular finishes. Only a foot sweep, knock down or a hip
throw is allowed as a take down rule. This allows more technique
to be displayed to bring the opponent down. Fighters have to start
action within ten seconds, this prevents fighters from wasting
time when winning on points. The hexagon-shaped ring with
ropes allows for better TV broadcast and spectator observation.
There is an elimination process rather than match making, which
allows for true potential to be identified and leaving fighters
to create their own destiny. There is a talent show element
in search of the greatest fighter of all time. Due to the many
countries and continents participating, there will be an element
of patriotism supporting the fighting heroes. LFS is country
versus country rather than fighter versus fighter. There are six
world championships with six weight divisions in six countries.
This is the first ever professional martial arts and combats sport
World Championship with 64 countries participating in this sixday event. There will also be a festival and health expo at the
shows in order to maximise entertainment value.
LFS is changing the face of fighting, showcasing mastery, taking
fighting back to its roots and empowering and identifying heritage.

GYMNASTICS ACADEMY
AND THEIR SUCCESS.
Located at Theo Marais Park, Mega Gymnastics
Academy (MGA) is one of the oldest, most
successful clubs in the Western Cape. It was
founded by Gloria Bender over 25 years
ago, and is currently run by her daughter,
veteran Springbok Lindsay Buckley. The initial
purpose of the academy was to create a family
environment where kids could break the wellknown gymnastic stereotypes, and become
involved in one of the greatest sports on Earth.
Originally operating out of Tableview Primary School, MGA
has gone on to become a first-rate club producing numerous
Western Province and South African gymnasts each year. Since
its endeavor to create champions, Lindsay and her passionate
team have created an environment that promotes learning,
whilst allowing these athletes to feel comfortable and at
home. Lindsay is in charge of the girls’ high performance
programme at a national level. With a successful year behind
them, MGA has five pre-junior gymnasts who were elected to
take part in the Western Cape Junior Olympic development
squad, where all five girls qualified to compete at the
National Championships held in Pretoria this October.
All girls placed in the Top 10, with Talia Papadakos achieving
a bronze medal in the individual all-around. In 2015, Mega
Gymnastics has qualified an outstanding total of three
gymnasts into the Region 5 international event which will
take place in December. Ben van Duivenbooden, Meghan
Pead and Eugenie Bezuidenhout have qualified for the South
African team which will be taking place in Namibia and
Zimbabwe.
Apart from the ladies’ department, Mega Gymnastics also
accommodates men. The men’s programme requires boys
to compete on six apparatuses and is coached by Warren
Buchanan who has been at the club for the past ten years.
The academy offers classes for all ages, ranging from four
years of age and up, including adult classes that are mostly
for ex-gymnasts, as well as for those who want to keep in
shape.
“Mega Gymnastics holds a special place in my heart. Through
all the bad times I have managed to keep the club going
and I will continue to make the parents and gymnasts proud,”
says Lindsay. These gymnasts train up to 20 hours per week
from the age of eight. It requires mass amounts of discipline,
passion and drive to be as dedicated as they are – something
that needs to be applauded. These dedicated Mega Gymnastic
‘champions’ are on a winning streak, and are determined to be
successful in all that they do.

parkrun is the new fitness trend in South Africa
and so it should be as it is fun, fast and you get
to see some of the most beautiful views in your
area. A five-kilometre running event, you can
take part every Saturday morning across several
countries.
parkrun is free of charge and, once runners are registered on the relevant
website, you get a unique athlete number along with your very own
identification barcode which tracks your time. These results are then
processed and uploaded onto the website by volunteers so that you
can analyse and track your progress. The concept was founded by Paul
Sinton-Hewitt in 2004 in the United Kingdom. It was first called the
UK Time Trials and was changed into parkrun in 2010. This timed run
now takes place every week in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand,
Poland, Russia, UK, Singapore, Czech Republic, United States, Italy, France
and South Africa.
The events are run by volunteers with numerous sponsorships so that
you can get the best experience. parkrun South Africa is sponsored by

Purely Local: What do you feel your purpose in life is? Corné Krige: I think finding one’s purpose in life is one of the most
difficult things to do. I do however feel that we have been placed on
earth to make a difference in others’ lives and not just live for yourself.
PL: Any advice on how others can find their purpose? CK: By actively pursuing the things in life that excite you, as well as by
serving others.
PL: What has playing rugby for South Africa taught you about team work and
being a role model for others? CK: Playing for South Africa has instilled a discipline in me that will
never fade. It has taught me that a person can’t be strong in all areas
of your life, and that you need to rely on others and trust them if you
want to achieve great things in life. In terms of role models, I sometimes
think it’s unfair to expect a 20-year-old sports man to be a role model
for a whole country. Most 20-year-olds just have fun and they don’t
have to worry about what people say or think. In South Africa, we expect
every sportsman to be a role model which is a bit unfair.
PL: Do you have any advice for those who aspire to play rugby for their
country? CK: Try to get a degree in something before or whilst you are playing
rugby, because it will help you play with the freedom that you do have
something else to fall back on if rugby doesn’t work out for you.
PL: What advice that you got from someone else really stayed with you and
would you like to share with us? CK: Chase the deal and not the money. The money will follow if you cut
the deal and add value.

of hosting a thrilling mountain bike experience. This year’s 2015 FNB Wines2Whales
MTB Events attracted 3900 excited riders from around the country! The annual MTB
Stage Race is under the directorship of Johan Kriegler, Michael Meyer, Hendrico

The prize purse for the 2015 FNB
W2W MTB Race was increased by
R31 500, taking the overall total to
a whopping R381 500. The overall
men’s and women’s teams took home
a prize purse of R65 000 after Stage
Three.
Runners up were awarded
R30 000, while the final team on the
podium won R17 500.
In the midst of fast paced riding, FNB
Wines2Whales MTB Events show great
support to locals and NGO’s by offering
complimentary entries to a select few. This
good deed allows everyone to join in on the
mountain biking fun! The FNB Wines2Whales
MTB Race is no light matter though. Riders
kicked off the Adventure on 30 October,
the Ride on 02 November and the Race
on 06 November, 2015 at the picturesque
Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset
West. Riders then had to cross through 13
wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains,
historic roads, nature conservation areas
(including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before
finishing within sight of the famous whales
of Hermanus. Overall, team RECM’s Erik
Kleinhans and James Reid claimed overall
victory in the men’s race. Robyn De Groot
and Jennie Stenerhag of Team Ascendis
Health claimed victory in the women’s
race in a well-deserved combined time of
09 hours 46 minutes 19 seconds. Lastly,
Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Carl Pasio of
Team Bigla claimed victory in the mixed team
category with a combined finishing time of 10
hours 07 minutes and 05 seconds.

Purely Local took a closer look
at Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre
located in Melkbosstrand.
Animals form a part of our
community and many of them
suffer, which is where Uitsig
comes in.
The idea behind Uitsig started in 2007, when
Denay Saunders (CEO) had enough of people
surrendering healthy dogs, the ‘throw away’ pet,
at the vet where she then worked as a veterinary
assistant. Denay asked if she could offer them a
place to stay as an alternative to euthanasia to
give them time to see if a new home could be
found. By 2009, Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre was
born as the demand became more than a parttime effort. Denay resigned from her position at
the vet and gave all her attention to the animals
that had come into her care.
It all started with passion. Denay has always
had an affinity with animals and felt the need
to uphold dogs’ ‘right to life’. As time went
on, people heard of the work that was being
done and suddenly lost and abandoned dogs
were being brought in, so the numbers grew
organically. Denay was also being called into
the surrounding impoverished areas to assist
with injured animals, and this was where she
witnessed so many unwanted animals who were
suffering purely through circumstances of birth.
Being a ‘pro-life’ organisation, Uitsig became
involved with mass sterilisation and educational
drives, recognising that, by removing the animal,
it would only mean that it would be replaced and
the cycle would continue. On Saturdays, Uitsig welcomes anyone who
would like to pop in and visit, where one can
interact with the animals – giving them much
needed personal attention, which ultimately
helps them to be more adoptable. From walking
the dogs, grooming the cats or running with the
huskies, there is always something that can be
done – even if it is just to say ‘hello’ as the moral
support gives them the strength to continue
what they are doing.
It is Uitsig’s dream to change the face of animal
welfare in South Africa today. They want to
help the public see that a rescue centre is not
necessarily a scary place where you will leave
with tears in your eyes, but recognise that the
animals in their care do much the same as any
family pet – they dig holes, chase butterflies and
sleep in the sun. The only difference is that they
have a bigger family. It is Uitsig’s drive and hope
that, in part, they will be able to find ways to help
themselves to become self-supportive to sustain
the centre and carry on.
Every time that they are approached by someone
who has an animal that needs their assistance,
due consideration is given. They mostly look
after cats, dogs, horses, pigs, rabbits, chickens,
cows and a they also have a goat. They don’t
determine the animals’ legibility by their current
address or status, but purely on whether they
can do justice in offering their help. Being one
of the largest Animal Welfare Organisations in
the Western Cape, they need to be sensible and
ensure that their numbers currently stay stagnate
and that the infrastructure of the organisation
can cope. Their only exception to the rule is
when an animal in need or trauma is brought in,
and they will ensure that animals are afforded
medical care or sanctuary wherever possible.
Whether it is rehabilitation or re-homing, they
have caring staff who are willing to spend hours
ensuring that animals are dealt with humanely.
Uitsig has just purchased their own ‘piece of
heaven’, 40 hectares of land in Melkbosstrand
where we are re-building their centre. It is a work
in progress and only when funds are available
will they be able to refurbish the existing camps
that have been cobbled together from materials
kindly donated. They would love to build a stateof-the-art sanctuary and offer every dog the
most comfortable accommodation.
Operational and medical costs are a constant and
the basics have to be covered. It is a continuing
cycle of caring, feeding and treating the animals,
and they must always come first. Being a
volunteer-driven organisation, Uitsig is fortunate
that they have a figure head who is ‘hands on’
with the animals and holds the leash tightly as
she is fiercely protective of all those in her care.

rain. It also means insect eggs
have hatched and have entered
your home or are fighting very
hard to do so. Fleas are the
most common pest to find in
your home. They love living on
your pets and especially in your
carpet. A female flea lays ten to
20 eggs per day and these eggs
hatch every three days. If you
don’t control it, you will have a
huge infestation problem. Here
are a few natural remedies to get
rid of fleas in your home.
SOAPY WATER FLEA TRAP
Drown the fleas in your very own homemade
trap. All you need is a shallow dish, warm water,
dish washing liquid and a night light. Fill your
shallow dish with warm soapy water and place
it in the problem area under the night light.

spray or dipping your pet in a vinegar bath, you

Purely Local: What are you planning to do to make a
difference in your community and school?
Francois van Schalkwyk: I am planning to build on what
has been laid down before by previous years and to ensure
that future generations will do the same. We hope to leave
sustainable systems behind, which will continue to serve
the school as well as the surrounding community long
after we are gone. I trust that fresh ideas and initiative will
come from the incredible prefects, as well as the school as a
whole, to keep the year exciting.
PL: What does your leadership position mean to you?
FvS: It means that I serve my school now, and that my own
interests come second. It is a great responsibility, but I
couldn’t have a better team. It is such a privilege.
PL: What do you think makes a good leader?
FvS: A good leader is someone that others follow and trust
completely without questioning why. It is the person who
locks the doors and switches off the lights, and it is the
person who gives others the opportunity to follow them in a
new direction, down a new path.
PL: What are you looking forward to most of all?
FvS: I’m looking forward to the growth that I know I will see
in people and in the school as a whole, as well as seeing
the next leaders of the school emerge over the next year.
I obviously also look forward to Derby Day 2016 against
Parklands College – it’s going to be a big one.

PL: How are you planning to make a difference as a head
pupil?
Catherine Bern: One of our main goals for this year is to
bridge the gap that is often evident between junior and
senior students. Instead of recreating the wheel, we want
to embody traditions that are already in place. We want to
leave at the end of our matric year, knowing that we have
left a sustainable structure behind for future years. I know
that we have a beyond capable team and I see really great
things happening this next year. PL: What are your plans for after school?
CB: Ever since I was seven years old, I have wanted to be
a doctor. I am planning to study an MBChB, after which I
would love to specialise in pediatrics or rural medicine.
After getting my degree, it is my ultimate dream to work as
a doctor without borders. PL: What does this position mean to you?
CB: This position means that the school is my number one
priority. It also means that I get to play a role in something
that I am really passionate about, which is leading the
school with a really amazing group of people. PL: What do you think makes a good leader?
CB: At our prefect camp during October, our prefect body
defined a leader as being ‘someone that thrives off the
success of others’ and ‘someone that people follow’. When
I think of what a good leader entails, the first word that
comes to mind is Servant-Leadership. Our Prefect Body
wants to embody the principles of servant leadership in
this upcoming year. To me, being a good leader requires you

CB: I am beyond excited to see our grade grow as leaders.
We are all so diverse in terms of what we are capable of, so
I’m excited to see where that leads us, especially during the
Derby Day period as it will be our last Derby Day as Elkanah
House students. In addition to this, Francois and I are going
with Amahle and Bonga, students from Inkwenkwezi High
School, to a leadership course in Grahamstown over the
December holidays. I am beyond excited to be going, as
I think there is a lot we can learn from each other. I am
also really looking forward to future collaborations with
Inkwenkwezi High School. LMI offers leadership and management courses to

PL: What difference do you feel you made this year?
Frances Litten: When we were elected, we sat down and
planned what we wanted for this year. Our goal was to
promote the trademark family unity of our school and to
inspire a chain of legends. As our slogan this year is “Above
and Beyond”, we took pride in going the extra mile and in
constantly thinking of new ideas and ways to give back to
the school and setting new standards. Furthermore, through
keeping busy we were also able to get more done. As a
Head Prefect, I tried to make the most of my position by
devoting myself to my prefect group, grade and school and
by applying our school’s motto “Carpe Diem” (seize the day)
into every facet of my year.
PL: What did this position mean to you?
FL: Elkanah House is situated in a community that is
expanding quicker than anyone could ever have imagined.
We are a school that gives back to the community in the
form of scholarships, awareness programmes and social
outreachs. As Head Girl, I have had the opportunity to work
closely with the Prefect in charge of Social Outreach, and
our team puts over a fifth of our students out into the
community every Friday. We have run mobile teaching
workshops at underprivileged school and assisted in
running the annual event of One Day Without Shoes at our
school. Resego [Head boy 2015] and I have also started a
new Outreach element. We got the idea when we were on a
trip to Kingswood College in Grahamstown for a Leadership
Conference last December. We decided to pair up with
Inkwenkwezi High School in Dunoon and have hosted joint
training and planning sessions with them.
PL: What do you think makes a good leader?
FL: Overall, the year has been a challenging but rewarding
one. It is incredible to win the trust of your school and to
serve them. The biggest challenge is juggling the demands
that accompany Matric, whilst still giving your everything to
Prefect events. Being a Head Prefect is in itself a challenge
as it takes a while for the school to realise that, instead
of viewing it as an elevated position, it is more accurately
defined as a case of elevated responsibility.
PL: What are your plans for next
year?
FL: I am very excited to attend
AFDA, the South African School
of Motion Picture Medium and
Live Performance, next year.
There I will be studying film
and live performance. Whilst
studying, my plan is to also find
a job to support myself. I am
proud of the South African film
and music industry and I would
like to be a part of it.

SA AWARD

tangible evidence for all of us that the journey we have travelled has been worth

It’s that time of year again, where we slowly
start packing away those woolly jerseys
and oversized coats and excitedly start
pulling out the denim shorts, floppy hats
and bohemian sundresses. Festival season
in Cape Town kicked off in October with its
most popular music festival event, Rocking
The Daisies – or as I like to call it, The
Coachella of Cape Town. From bindis to flash
tattoos to bringing back the bell-bottoms,
finding the perfect festival outfit means
giving your wardrobe some consideration.
Although it may seem as though tiny hotshorts and floral headbands are typical
festival uniform, what you really need is a
warm jacket (just to take the chill off) and a
good pair of sunnies. You also need a strong
sense of stamina for non-stop dancing on
your feet and walking for what feels like
days on end to the car and back. Consider
your festival wardrobe as a survival kit! The
comfier you are, the easier the experience.
Plan ahead, stick to just one outfit per day
that still complements itself in both warm
or cold weather, keep shoes to the minimal,
and buy a bottle of glitter in case you
leave your make-up behind – glitter does
wonders!
The swell of the seventies is definitely
making a comeback this festival season.
A couple of years ago, I would have never
caught myself dead in a pair of high waisted
bell-bottoms, now it seems to be all that
I’m buying! Multi-coloured hippy patterns
in hues of deep reds, purples and blues is
making its mark in all local vintage markets,
namely Raven Bohotique and Dreamland
that are held weekly at The Vintage
Experience. There’s no excuse not to rock a
good pair of bells at a festival when there
are just so many good pairs to choose from.
Match them up with a cute crop top and
a comfortable sling bag. Hair half up in a
bun with the rest left loose, decorate your
forehead with some bindis. I also like to use
the round pastel stickers that are sold at
China Town. If you’re into chokers like I am, a
plain black one with a cute pendant always
does the trick!

Kudzi Muradzi is a talented nail technician who has always had an artistic hand. Art
was her favourite subject and at the age of 16, she was accepted to do an art course
in Malaysia. Unfortunately, it was the wrong type of art – graphic design! After a lot
of soul searching she decided to take some time out and moved to be with her sister
in Melbourne, Australia. During her nine-month stay, she got exposed to a lot of
aesthetic experiences including an overindulgence in manicures with nail extensions,
eyelash extensions and massages. “During these experiences I realised that, if I had
an opportunity to study, this is what I wanted to do. I moved back to South Africa and
enrolled in a Diploma in aesthetics at the Beauty Therapy Institute,” says Kudzi.

need to know about trending nails and manicures.

Purely Local: When did you start working at
Sorbet and why do you enjoy working for this wellestablished brand?
Kudzi Muradzi: I started working at Sorbet fulltime in March 2015. During my induction with
the founder, he mentioned something that really
made me look at things very differently. He said
that we do not work for the bosses or owners
of the salon, but that our bosses should be the
guests that walk in on a day-to-day basis. If they
are happy then we are all happy. Working for
Sorbet is like being part of a community and I am
proud to be a part of it.
PL: What are some of the latest trends for nails this
season?
KM: Summer is all about bright, fluorescent
colours and flower nail art. When indecisive, bling
nail art or a bright statement nail never goes out
of fashion.
PL: What is the difference between Gel and Gelish
nails?
KM: Gel nails and Gelish are pretty much the
same, but with Gel nails one is able to build a
nail, repair or improve the appearance of ridges,
whereas Gelish or otherwise known as Gel polish,
is just pliable colour that dries instantly when
cured under a LED or UV lamp, so there is no
smudging or waiting for the polish to dry.
PL: When it comes to acrylic nails, what options can
one have?
KM: Amazingly, one can never run out of options.
The powder used nowadays comes in all shades,
and nail shapes are constantly being improved.
You can even put up to six different tip colours
on just one nail.
PL: What do you do to ensure you stay current with
the trends?
KM: Surprisingly, clients are well informed and
know what they want. Some clients bring in
photos of the nail art they want. I also get a lot of
inspiration from current fashion trends, runways,
Pinterest and from celebrities.
PL: What advice can you give aspiring youth who
want to venture into this field?
KM: I think there’s a stigma attached with working
in the beauty industry – people often associate
beauticians or aestheticians and nail technicians
with being less academic. However, that’s not the
case as an abundance of knowledge of anatomy
is needed to be in this industry. Follow your
dreams, get educated and never stop learning
because this industry is forever changing with
constant new research.
PL: What is the most fulfilling part of your job?
KM: The satisfaction on a client’s face when
they feel beautiful. It is so reassuring and such a
positive feeling.
PL: Are these types of nail applications harmful to
one’s nails?
KM: No, every type of nail preparation comes
with a safe removal method. Removal agents can
never be the same, therefore different product

There is an influx of people who are lactose intolerant these days,

Three Capetonian entrepreneurs decided to do something about this and

The brainchild of Elizabeth van Straaten, Sherriden Davidson and Judy Middup, NotMilk was launched
this year. Three generations of vegan women with a philosophy that is both ethical and healthconscious, they looked at presenting a product to replace traditional cow milk.
So what is it if ‘Not Milk’? Simply put, it is fresh, raw almond milk that is made with raw organic
activates (soaked), almonds and filtered water. Fresh Almond Milk is available all over the world, and
South Africa is slowly catching on to the fresh, healthy, raw trend. The trio saw a gap in the market for
fresh dairy-alternatives to milk and they chose to use almonds because they are the most nutritious
and delicious.
They also offer flavoured milks that contain only organic ingredients such as organic cocoa, organic
espresso, organic cinnamon, organic vanilla extract, organic Himalayan salt and organic coconut oil.
