Kaapse Stories
P
rime Circle is a much loved
on the SA music scene and
left the country this past
week for an international
tour. In true style, they wanted to
go bigger and better and are touring Europe with U.S. hit rock band
3 Doors Down.
The American alternative rock
band is travelling with their Greatest Hits tour and best known for
their chart topper ‘Here Without
You’ - it hit no.1 on the US charts
in 2003. Nice feather in Prime Circle’s cap – they were handpicked to
be the support act for the European
leg of the 3 Doors Down tour that
includes stops in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Prime Circle won several
SAMAs at the recent ceremony for
their new album ‘Evidence’ and will
be back in SA soon – catch them
next time they’re in the Cape for a
cool rock experience.
Speaking of tours, do you remember the concerts at the 3 Arts
Theatre in Plumstead? I have fond
memories of seeing ZZ Top and
Skunk Anansie play there. I missed
the INXS concert (supported by the
Springbok Nude Girls) and didn’t
see Tevin Campbell either. I have
ART
Tevin Campbell
friends who fondly recall Tevin’s
two sell-out nights there with legions of fans singing along to his
hits ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and ‘Can We
Talk’. Good news for Tevin fans: he
is coming back to the Cape! Supported by Jimmy Nevis, Chad Saaiman and Emo Adams, Tevin Campbell will perform in Divos 2013 at
the Grand Arena, Grand West on
July 28.
Tevin was a huge star in the
1990s. After working with Quincy
Jones, Prince and featuring on the
soundtrack to ‘Boyz in the Hood’, he
released his album ‘T.E.V.I.N.’ which
saw phenomenal double-platinum
sales. Two years later he topped
charts again with ‘I’m Ready’. In
the 1990s most of us owned Tevin
Campbell music…mostly on a pirated cassette or a mixtape made by a
girlfriend…and you loved it regardless. But what on earth ever happened to Tevin Campbell? After his
second solo album he took a break
and eventually moved into the world
of TV and stage: He featured in ‘The
Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, ‘Moesha’
and appeared on the soundtrack of
‘A Goofy Movie’. Tevin eventually
cracked Broadway starring in the hit
musical ‘Hairspray’. Don’t miss him
in Divos 2013 at Grand West.
For the Jazz fans, make sure you
get your tickets for The Manhattan
Transfer. The American jazz group
will be in Cape Town for one night
only on September 3 at the Grand
Arena. They’ve been playing since
the late 1970s and have won four
Grammys in the categories of Best
Contemporary Jazz Album, Best
Jazz Fusion Performance, Best Pop
Performance by a Duo or Group
with Vocal and Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group.
This delightful musical revue
celebrates the joyful, resilient
spirit of the colourful people
who populate the city that lies
at the foot of Table Mountain.
Couched in the recent history
of the Cape, “Kaapse Stories”
deftly relates stories of Cape
Town and her people, their
struggles, victories and personalities, all with a hefty
dose of comedy.
