2016 Newsletter - Computer Olympiad
January 2016 TALENT SEARCH Participation in the Talent Search is open to all. For 2016 schools with adequate connectivity can take part online. Schools that lack internet access can use the pen-and-paper version of the same test which does not require the use of a computer at all. The 2016 Talent Search will be offered at four levels: • Junior: grades 7 and below • Senior: grade 10 and 11 • Intermediate: • Elite: grades 8 and 9 grades 12 and higher For the lower grades and for the grades 10 and 11 the Talent Search is an excellent opportunity to develop Computational Thinking. For the grade 9s it will help in subject choices for grade 10. For the grade 12s it will help with the choice of a career and further studies. Rewards: Certificates are awarded to the participants with above average scores. The names of top learners are forwarded to the Department of Science and Technology and to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation so that qualifying learners can be invited to Science Camps and can be considered for Allan Gray Scholarships. Talent Search dates for 2016: Monday 7 to Friday 11 March Register at www.olympiad.org.za APPLICATIONS OLYMPIAD 2015 PROVINCIAL WINNERS Name and position Grade School Eastern Cape 1 Dylan Warwick 12 Grey High, Port Elizabeth 2 Greg Harmse 12 Lilyfontein School, East London 2 Grant Oppelt 11 Alexander Road, Port Elizabeth 9 UFS Python Project, Bloemfontein 1 Isaac Gumbi 12 Afrikaanse Hoër Germiston 2 Marthinus Steyn 12 Florida High, Florida 3 Joshua Bruton 12 Curro Aurora, Johannesburg 1 Robert Wood 12 Michaelhouse, Balgowan 2 Steve Yuk 12 Domino Servite, Greytown 3 Jeremy Holden 12 St Barnabas School, Durban 12 CBC St Patricks, Kimberley Free State 1 Albert Dreyer Gauteng 2015 AO Winners and Runners-up 2015 FINAL ROUND WINNERS Runners-up Bronze Silver Gold Award and Name Grade School and Town KwaZulu-Natal Northern Cape Robert Wood 12 Michaelhouse, Balgowan M Fayaz Kimmie 12 Islamia College, Cape Town Western Cape Matthew Symon 12 Herzlia High, Cape Town 1 Jade Caldicott 12 Curro Mossel Bay Marc Domancie 12 Edgemead High, Cape Town 2 Matthew Symon 12 Herzlia High, Cape Town Greg Harmse 12 Lilyfontein School, East London 2 Roché Visser 12 President High, Cape Town Roché Visser 12 President High, Cape Town Joshua Bruton 12 Curro Aurora, Johannesburg Jade Caldicott 12 Curro Mossel Bay Albert Dreyer 9 UFS Python Project, Bloemfontein Isaac Gumbi 12 Afrikaanse Hoër Germiston Grant Oppelt 12 Alexander Road High, Port Elizabeth Marthinus Steyn 12 Florida High, Florida Pieter Theron 12 Worcester Gimnasium Dylan Warwick 12 Grey High, Port Elizabeth Steve (Juheon) Yuk 12 Domino Servite, Greytown 1 Kelly Anne Welham 2015 AO Gold Medallist Robert Wood (Michaelhouse) and Debbie Schafer (MEC for Education WC) A project of the Institute of IT Professionals South Africa (IITPSA).
