Male ballerinas pay tribute to greatest female parts
EVENTS see ● do ● experience Male ballerinas pay tribute to greatest female parts T he State St Petersburg Male Ballet Company, the well-known male ballet company from Russia, will be visiting Cape Town during the next week. The group will perform at the Artscape Theatre between until May 23 for five performances only. Under the leadership of Russian dancer and choreographer Valery Mikhailovsky, the company has made a name for itself performing a repertoire of famous female showpieces such as ‘La Sylphide’, ‘Raymonda’, ‘Paquita’ and ‘Giselle’ – all en pointe. They perform the most sophisticated contemporary male numbers, as well as the classical female roles, often with humor. Critics have claimed that the unusual success of the company is determined by their professionalism, their fresh interpretation of ballet art and courageous staging. The classical part of their programme consists of a pas de deux from ‘Esmeralda’, ‘Le Spectre de la Rose’, ‘Adagio’ from the ballet ‘Scheherazade’, as well as the ‘Ocean and Two Pearls’ pas de trios from ‘The Little Humpbacked Horse’. Their contemporary programme features ‘Dance of the Little Swans’, ‘Dance of the Members of the St. Petersburg Male Ballet Company in action Toreadors’, an Argentine Tango, ‘Habanera’ from ‘Carmen’ and ‘Bolero’ amongst others. The State St Petersburg Male Ballet has danced on the best stages of Russia, as well as worldrenowned theatres such as the New York Lincoln Centre, Tokyo, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, Amsterdam, Salzburg, Peking, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Jerusalem and Seoul. * Book at Computicket.
