HO’ALOHA MAUI’S wit NEWS Autumn/Fall 2015 women in touch SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF MAUI October - November NO MORE! Club members went purple to take a stand against domestic violence in October during DVAM - Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Soroptimists kicked off the month with presentation by fellow club member Sheila Kelley, from the County Committee on the Status of Women. Sheila talked about the Domestic Violence Expo “A Day of Hope & Healing” held on October 10th at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center to help the community learn about domestic abuse and the resources that are available locally. WOMEN HELPING WOMEN Women Helping Women (WHW), Maui’s local domestic violence shelter, and their Executive Director and Maui Soroptimist Stacey Moniz, launched into their busiest time of year: DVAM. On October 3rd and 29th, WHW, with help from Whaler’s Village and University of Hawaii - Maui College (UHMC), hosted two “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” events to raise money for WHW and bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence. The event on October 29th concluded with an emotional domestic violence candlelight vigil to honor missing victims and those who lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. Other events to benefit WHW that happened during DVAM included: a fun run on October 10th, an art-for-a-cause fundraiser on the same day at Tamara Catz Boutique, and a wine pairing benefit at Montage on October 20th. DVAM CONTINUED Maui Soroptimists partnered with WHW, the Association of University Women, and the County Committee on the Status of Women on October 17th at UHMC for an amazing Human Trafficking Conference with special Oahu guest speaker, Kathryn Xian, Executive Director of the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery (PASS). Kathryn discussed some strategies on identifying and combating human trafficking on a local level. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! At a new member induction luncheon on November 7th at Bistro Casanova, the club welcomed four new Soroptimists: Lisa Rodrigues, Melissa Fisher, Monique Yamashita, and Rae Seki. Their club sponsors were Carolyn Johnson and Stacey Moniz. Welcome and congratulations to all!
