This year marks the sixth year of Culture Days, a Canada-wide volunteer movement that raises the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. This is the third year organizations in Timmins are taking part in Culture Days with six activities on schedule for September 26th and 27. (Tea Ceremony requires pre-registration) All activities are FREE and drop-in. Saturday September 26 Pottery Throwing and Wheel Demonstrations: 8:00am to 12:00pm Organization: Wawaitin Clayworks Location: Mountjoy Independent Farmers’ Market, Centennial Hall (814 Park Avenue, Next to Mountjoy Arena) Visit Wawaitin Clayworks at the Mountjoy Independent Farmers’ Market for their second Culture Days demonstration. Learn the steps involved in turning a one-pound lump of clay into a finished cup or bowl. Feel free to ask questions, too! Finished pottery will also be available for purchase. Weaving/Spinning Demonstrations: 10:00am to 2:00pm Organization: Porcupine Handweavers and Spinners Guild Location: 272A Third Avenue (Upstairs) Join the Porcupine Handweavers and Spinners Guild for their third annual Culture Days Open House. See demonstrations on the various techniques of the art weaving and spinning. Japanese Tea Ceremony: 1:30pm to 4:00pm Organizations: Wawaitin Clayworks & Timmins Public Library Location: Timmins Public Library, 320 Second Avenue Learn about Raku pottery and take part in a Japanese Tea Ceremony at the Timmins Public Library. There will be a video demonstration of how Raku pottery is made by Wawaitin Clayworks, followed by the Tea Ceremony. This event is open to all ages! Space is limited; registration is required beforehand. Phone the library at 705-360-2623, ext. 8519 to sign-up. Sunday September 27 Sunday Open Studio: 12:00pm to 4:00pm Organization: Porcupine Art Club Location: Roy Nicholson Park (Intersection of Pine St. North and Eighth Avenue, Timmins) Join the Porcupine Art Club for their third year of participating in Culture Days! Visit the clubhouse between Noon and 4pm on September 27 to meet with local artists and try your hand at a collaborative painting on panels. What’s it Worth Timmins Coin and Currency Roadshow: 1:00pm to 4:00pm Organization: Timmins Coin Club Location: Timmins Public Library, 320 Second Avenue Do you have coins or paper money that have been inherited from family or acquired long ago and not sure their value? Drop in with them to the Timmins Library Sunday Sept 27 1 to 4 pm. Timmins Coin Club members with have a look at them and see if they are worth more than face value. We will not be certifying, or authenticating any coins or paper money. The four categories that the club will consider are: Canadian Coins, Canadian Paper Money, International Coins and Paper Money, Commemorative Coins and Medallions. Lunar Eclipse Viewing: Starts at 7:45pm (Weather Permitting) Organization: Science Timmins Astronomy Club Location: Beach at Gillies Lake (near playground) Join members of the Science Timmins Astronomy Club for st viewing the last total lunar eclipse until January 31 , 2018. Totality occurs at approximately 10:47pm. Dress appropriately and bring a chair. Washrooms available. Club members will provide water and snacking foods (veggie sticks, chips, etc.).
